Lot 1 A GWR Brass Gangers Key from the Swimbridge-Barnstaple Victoria Rd Section, 5_", inscribed "POSSESSION OF THIS KEY AUTHORISES GANGER TO OCCUPY THE LINE BETWEEN SWIMBRIDGE-BARNSTAPLE STATION", Ex Taunton-Barnstaple route, closed on the 3rd October 1966. - Sold for £560 Lot 2 A Great Central Railway Bridgeplate "GCR, 12", Ex Woodford Halse-Banbury Route, 14"x12", "target" shape, very old white on blue paintwork. - Sold for £110 Lot 3 A Signal Finial of Crucifom Pattern, with flat square base & large spike, circular cut out on each face. Not a company we have been able to identify, but certainly British Main Line. - Sold for £50 Lot 4 An LT station direction sign "EALING BROADWAY STN", a double sided plate featuring the LT Target with text on blue bar & a large decorative red arrow bisecting the target with a grey surround, 26"x10_", designed to fit to a Telegraph post, within an alloy frame, a superb design presented in a wooden surround, excellent condition with edge chips on one side only. - Sold for £980 Lot 5 A Small LBSCR/SR Signal Box Block Bell of split case design, with makers plate on front "WR SYKES, INTERLOCKING SIGNAL Co LTD, RAILWAY SIGNAL & TELEGRAPH ENGINEERS WORKS LONDON & GLASGOW", a standard pattern Sykes brass plunger is mounted on the front of case & with chrome bell on top with tapper to strike bell externally, an unusual example used at Eridge box on the Oxted-Polegate Line near the junction with the Uckfield & Lewes route, lovely ex signal box condition. - Sold for £90 Lot 6 A BR(S) dark green Station Sign "TRAINS TO PRESTON PARK, BRIGHTON (arrow to left), HAYWARDS HEATH, EAST CROYDON LONDON (arrow to right)", 48"x18", (f/f), Ex Burgess Hill Station on the Brighton Main Line. Excellent condition. - Sold for £1150 Lot 7 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "SECOND CLASS, M TO Z, ALSO LEEDS, LIVERPOOL, LLANDUDNO", (f/f), 18" x 12", two small face chips, one on a letter and one inside the "O", and one minor blemish, usual edge chipping. An unusual wording relating to postal operations and originating from Bangor or Holyhead. Significantly, this is a BR sign rather than Post Office. - Sold for £190 Lot 8 A BR(Sc) light blue enamel doorplate "TICKETS", (f/f), good colour & shine, screw holes perfect, usual edge chips & one rim chip bottom left. - Sold for £230 Lot 9 A Cast Iron Notice "GNR (I), NOTICE TRESPASSERS ON THE LINE WILL BE PROSECUTED", at 8"x 5_" one of the smallest such notices, from The Great Northern Rly of Ireland, excellent original condition. - Sold for £70 Lot 10 A rectangular Viaduct Plate "L&NWR 134", with double border, 15_"x 11_", primered long ago, the back pitted, the front excellent with good definition to characters & a little pitting to outer border only. - Sold for £85 Lot 11 An LBSCR Oil Funnel, for filling lamps etc, conical shape with large embossed oval brass plate "LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY COMPANY" & the company initials stamped below, also a steel plate "SHOREHAM", Ex Brighton-Worthing route, the brass plate is of the type used on the company's handlamps. - Sold for £160 Lot 12 A GWR Gangers Trolley Instrument, with trafolite plate "CEMMES ROAD-TALERDDIG". 12" x 17", 13" high. Polished wooden top and base, red painted steel body. The instrument front has two "handles", brass plunger and circular needle indicator. Ex Cambrian Railway, Shewsbury- Machynlleth route, excellent condition. - Sold for £290 Lot 13 A BR(Sc) light blue enamel Doorplate "LADIES WAITING ROOM", virtually mint with only one minor flake loss around top centre fixing hole, a double line plate with "Ladies" on top line. - Sold for £200 Lot 14 A Finger Board "LEAMINGTON SPA, BANBURY, OXFORD, READING, REDHILL, ASHFORD, CANTERBURY, RAMSGATE, DUMPTON PARK, BROADSTAIRS, MARGATE", double sided with feathered arrow, 49" x 8", original chocolate and cream paintwork with green beading at top and base indicating an SR destination, ex Birmingham Snow Hill, excellent condition. - Sold for £400 Lot 15 A BR(M) maroon enamel station direction sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS (in totem emblem), NUNEATON ABBEY STREET STATION (arrow)", (f/f), 28"x 13", one face chip on arrow & rim & edge chips all matched in, at left side a 2" strip has been damaged by fixing & two screwholes drilled. An Ex Midland Rly Station on the Birmingham-Leicester route, closed on the 4th March 1968, it never had Totems. - Sold for £250 Lot 16 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "MICHELDEVER", (f/f), ex LSWR Basingstoke-Southampton Main Line, the first station south west of Worting Junction, a bit of mottling but still good colour, one small chip over "D" matched in, not offered before at auction. - Sold for £2200 Lot 17 An LNER Cast Iron Notice "CAUTION, BEWARE OF THE TRAINS, LNER 0.161", partly cleaned, 20"x14", with rounded corners, company initials lower left & casting number lower right. - Sold for £110 Lot 18 A BR(S) enamel doorplate "MOTORMEN", (f/f), black on white, lower case lettering, generally excellent with only a few tiny rim edge blemishes & similar at two screw holes, a traditional enamel sign from the early 1960s, 18_" x 3 5/8. - Sold for £70 Lot 19 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 9194, NB LOCO CO 1920" from a NBR Class A/ LNER N15 Class 0-6-2T built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22286, in March 1920, NBR No 9108. It retained this number under the LNER until renumbered 9194 in 1946, becoming BR 69194. It spent its later years at Parkhead from where it was withdrawn in October 1960 and was cut up the following month at Cowlairs Works Brass oval 9"x 5", lovely ex loco condition. - Sold for £100 Lot 20 A Cast Iron Notice "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NOTICE, NO UNAUTHORISED PERSON ALLOWED IN THIS BOX, BY ORDER", front probably repainted, cream on brown long ago, back untouched & with casting number "U75-" in recess, 11"x 8_". - Sold for £130 Lot 21 A (GWR) brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "1506" from a 1500 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon and one of four of the Class of only ten engines allocated new to Newport Pill in September 1949 for shunting in the Docks. It moved later to nearby Ebbw Junction and finally Old Oak Common where it was used on empty stock duties in and out of Paddington and from where it was withdrawn in December 1963. It was cut up at Wards, Briton Ferry the following May, face repainted long ago, back in ex loco condition. - Sold for £1500 Lot 22 A SHEDPLATE "53E", (Cudworth 1949-51, later Goole 1956-60), the front repainted & back in original condition. - Sold for £280 Lot 23 A BR(M) maroon enamel station direction sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS (in totem) HARROW & WEALDSTONE STATION (arrow)", 28"x13", good colour & shine, a West Coast Main Line Station between Wembley Central & Watford Junction. Edge chips & one minor repair on the white arrow. - Sold for £600 Lot 24 A London Brighton & South Coast Railway Clothes Brush, displaying the company initials in white bristles among the black ones, 14_" long, wooden handle & bristles excellent. - Sold for £45 Lot 25 An Enamel Bus Timetable Heading "UNITED COUNTIES", white on green, 16"x 4_", edge & screw hole chips just into lettering, good colour & shine. - Sold for £25 Lot 26 A Square Brass Single Line Tablet "LIMAVADY-LIMAVADY JUNC", Ex Belfast & Northern Counties/LMS. NCC, Limavady to Dungiven branch, Closed to passengers in 1933 & freight in 1950, 3_" square, a lovely old tablet with prominent lettering. - Sold for £170 Lot 27 An Enamel Advertising Sign "LYONS TEA", white on blue with orange edging to letters, orange/white border, 35_"x 11", a couple of neat corner repairs & edge chips similarily treated, a good example. - Sold for £160 Lot 28 A BR(W) chocolate & cream Totem Sign "STARCROSS", (f/f), Ex GWR Exeter St Davids-Newton Abbot Section of the Devon Main Line, a picturesque location on the Exe Estuary with Brunel's Atmospheric Railway Pump House by the station & the (GWR) Exmouth Ferry, accessed from the down platform. Excellent colour & shine, rust spots on edge repainted black, only offered once previously at a local Devon Auction. - Sold for £3000 Lot 29 A small Carriage Roof Board "KENTISH TOWN/EAST HAM", black on white, 28"x3_", original condition with a little wear on the word "East". - Sold for £70 Lot 30 A GWR 1947 Double Line Block Instrument with Line Clear/Normal/Train on Line indications in red/green/white, Commutator below with flaps at side "Train at Signal" & "Clearing Point Fouled", good original condition. - Sold for £110 Lot 31 A GWR enamel Lamp Tablet "CARREGHOFA HALT", white on black, 17_"x 3", with top flange, the halt was situated on the Llanyfyllin Branch of the Cambrian Railway & was the first stop after leaving the Gobowen-Welshpool route at Llanymynech. The Halt opened on the 11th April 1938 (at which time this sign was fitted) & closed on 18th Jan 1965, the section of line past Carreghofa was built by the Potteries Shrewsbury & North Wales Rly as their Nantmawr branch. Excellent condition with good shine & a few minor edge chips at base. - Sold for £420 Lot 32 A Single Line Key Token "SWIMBRIDGE-SOUTH MOLTON", Ex GWR Taunton-Barnstaple Line, closed on the 3rd October 1966, some original blue paint. - Sold for £440 Lot 33 A Signal Box Telephone with small brass plate on front "CALLINGTON", excellent condition with polished brass bell & fittings, bakelite combined mouth & ear piece, ivorine plate "Listen Before Ringing Code" & button, Ex Bere Alston Signal Box, Junction for Callington Branch Closed on the 7th Nov 1966. - Sold for £95 Lot 34 A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Cast Iron Gate Notice, with full company title & containing the usual references to shutting gates & Forty Shilling fine, as well as the request to look both up & down the line before crossing, 23_"x 20_", repainted white on red, back undercoated. - Sold for £110 Lot 35 A Carriage Print from the original LNER Series "FOUNTAINS ABBEY from an original etching by Frank Mason R.I.", a superb view of the Famous Abbey, River & distant hills, situated west of Ripon, the print is complete with its titled mount. - Sold for £320 Lot 36 A BR(S) light green Enamel Doorplate "CYCLES", (f/f), minor rim edge chips only, but surface scratches at left end. - Sold for £230 Lot 37 An enamel Advertising Sign "REDGATE TABLE WATERS SOLD HERE, ENJOYED THE YEAR ROUND SINCE 1878", red & white on blue & featuring a picture of a red gate, (the company's symbol), 32"x11", excellent colour & shine & two small edge chips. - Sold for £170 Lot 38 A small London & North Western Railway Silver Plated Jug, with waisted body "L&NWR Co" & Britannia coat of arms on side, 31/8" high, excellent condition & shine & a most unusual design. - Sold for £140 Lot 39 A SHEDPLATE "55H", (Leeds Neville Hill 1960-73). Original untouched condition with grimy paintwork. - Sold for £100 Lot 40 A Brass Cased Pressure Gauge, the original face marked "GWR, SWINDON" & indicating 0-100, 4" diameter with circular horizontal base plate below & mounted on bracket, a very attractive example well presented, though a hairline crack at edge of glass. - Sold for £60 Lot 41 A BR(NE) tangerine Totem Sign "WEST HARTLEPOOL", (f/f), Ex NER Stockton-Sunderland-Newcastle "Coast" route, excellent colour & shine, with just a little light rusting to the flange in places. - Sold for £2900 Lot 42 A Single Line Miniature Staff, Railway Signalling Company "WITHAM-CRESSING" engraved on brass head, Ex GER Witham-Bishops Stortford route, most of which closed in 1952, leaving the Braintree-Witham branch on which this staff was used. - Sold for £320 Lot 43 An LMS Target Sign "HALLATON", Ex GN & LNWR Joint Line, 48" long with original yellow background & black lettering & border. The first station North of Market Harborough on the route north to Melton Mowbray & Nottingham, Closed on the 7th December 1953. - Sold for £720 Lot 44 An LMS Locomotive Department bronze award shield, "LONDON MIDLAND AND SCOTTISH RAILWAY, SEVENTH PLACE FOR SUCCESS IN REDUCING ENGINE CASUALTIES" featuring Engine 6200 cast in relief with coat of arms, brass panels each side listing "Winners 1935 Accrington, 1936 Bescot, 1937 Motherwell, 1938 Carnforth, 1947 Plaistow, 1948 Bank Hall". The award of the shield was suspended during the War & ceased at Nationalization. The shield is mounted on modern wooden backboard, a superb item. - Sold for £100 Lot 45 A Great Northern Railway Platform Lamp with "LEADENHAM" on engraved white china plates on two faces, solid copper body with corner decorations & complete with glazing & interior reservoir, burner & glass chimney & frog to fix to post, the station closed on 1st November 1965 & was on the Lincoln-Barkeston route, a superb example. The square glass "Floor" panel requires replacing. - Sold for £420 Lot 46 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "FOR TRAINS TO SOUTHPORT", (f/f), 36" x 18", a little mottling in places, otherwise a good example, originating from a Liverpool-Southport or Wiggan-Southport line station. - Sold for £320 Lot 47 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "VAUXHALL & DUDDESTON", (f/f). Ex LNWR Birmingham-Lichfield Line & the first stop out of New Street, good colour & shine with one minute blemish on lower white line. - Sold for £900 Lot 48 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "LIMAVADY Jct-BELLARENA", (alloy), stamped serif lettering, Ex LMS. NCC Coleraine-Londonderry Waterside route. - Sold for £50 Lot 49 An LMS Solid Copper Signal Lamp case with ribbed bullseye lens & backlight, brass hinge, catch & oval brass plate "LMS RAILWAY" on top. Ex LMS.NCC, where it was used on a ground signal at Londonderry Waterside, 15" high, 71/8" diameter. - Sold for £55 Lot 50 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "2889" from a GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon and allocated new to Cardiff Canton in March 1938. It was still there ten years later and its later sheds were Severn Tunnel Junction, Canton again, Banbury and Didcot from where it was withdrawn in April 1963. It was cut up two months later at Swindon Works, front repainted long ago. - Sold for £325 Lot 51 A Single Line "One Engine in Steam", Train Staff, "PORTLAND-EASTON", cylindrical steel with key token end & oval handle, the section shown on 5_" brass plates on each side, overall 14_" long, used on the branch from Weymouth & the final section on the Isle of Portland, A GWR & LSWR Joint Line, Closed on 3rd of March 1952 & remaining for freight until 1965. - Sold for £680 Lot 52 A Southern Railway Tender Plate "WATER 4500 GALLONS", rectangular cast iron, 4_"x 3_", as attatched to Maunsell & Bullied Locomotives, Ex Loco condition. - Sold for £45 Lot 53 A Railway Signalling Company Single Line Key Token for the section from Coleraine to Portrush, cylindrical steel with rings & brass circular head prominently engraved "CE-PH", a long section key used when Portstewart Box was swiched out. - Sold for £40 Lot 54 A BR(W) quad royal poster "SWITCH TO BLUE PULLMAN, TOP COMFORT IN TRAIN TRAVEL, BRITISH RAIL", featuring a dramatic colour photographic view of the train in Sonning Cutting, excellent condition, light folds & one edge mark at top. - Sold for £100 Lot 55 A SHEDPLATE "81A", (Old Oak Common 1949-73), the front possibly repainted & back in lovely ex loco condition. - Sold for £160 Lot 56 A Brass Signal Box Plunger with ivorine plate "BARNSTAPLE OCCUPATION RELEASE KEY", from Filleigh Signal Box on the Taunton - Barnstaple line, closed 3rd October 1966, an old plate yellowed with age. - Sold for £100 Lot 57 A GNSR enamel trespass notice, "GREAT NORTH OF SCOTLAND RAILWAYS, NOTICE AS TO TRESPASS (ten lines of text) ABERDEEN, 1st Oct 1909, T.S.MACKINTOSH, SECRETARY". The company name is given in full three times in the text & unusually the sign's lettering is in Italic Script, 24"x 18", brown on white with some well matched repairs, "Falkirk Iron Co" Makers name at base. - Sold for £80 Lot 58 An Irish Wagon Registration Plate "REGISTERED BY THE GNR(I) TO CARRY 14 TONS, 1922, 196", standard pattern, lugs intact, repainted, also the matching owners plate "Owners Shell Mex & BP Ltd, London WC2, No 1534", rectangular, angled corners, 9"x 5_", repainted. (2) - Sold for £160 Lot 59 A GWR Brass Signal Box Shelf Plate "DAWLISH WARREN BOX", 4_" x 1_", a lovely old plate, well polished, from Dawlish Box on the famous sea wall between Exeter & Newton Abbot. - Sold for £220 Lot 60 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "PETROCKSTOW-HATHERLEIGH", solid brass, Ex SR Torrington-Halwill route (North Devon & Cornwall Junction Rly), opened in 1925 & after a life of only forty years closed on the 1st March 1965. - Sold for £800 Lot 61 An alloy SHEDPLATE "84A", as used on Laira's allocation of diesels between 1963 and 1973. Repainted over original paint. - Sold for £95 Lot 62 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "MOTHERWELL", (f/f), An Ex Caledonian Railway Station on the West Coast Main Line, a major junction between Carstairs & Glasgow Central, still served by most Expresses on the route, excellent colour & shine. - Sold for £1000 Lot 63 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "73048" from a BR Standard Class 5, 4-6-0 built at Derby in 1953 and allocated new to Millhouses. Its later sheds were Chester, Willesden, Bletchley, Nuneaton, Banbury and Bolton from where it was withdrawn in October 1967. It was cut up at Cashmores, Newport the following January, numbers possibly repainted but generally ex loco condition. - Sold for £500 Lot 64 A Framed War Tribute "NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE RAILWAY ROLL OF HONOUR, EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1916", listing Employees of the N.S.R. with the colours, list of Staff from the Traffic, Electrical, Railway Engineers, Accountants, Loco Carriage & Wagon Stores Depts, with decorative multicoloured surround featuring Scenes of Battle, Warships, NSR Express & Coats of Arms, Royal Arms, European Flags & side columns draped with oak leaves, original frame, overall 23_"x27". A Magnificent item produced during the War, as opposed th the usual Post War Tributes to the Dead, (This is the second of a pair of these NSR Rolls of Honour which were discovered in Staffordshire recently, the first was sold in our October Sale). - Sold for £150 Lot 65 A Southern Guards Pocket Watch by "Lanco", the back clearly marked "SR 3841" in serif lettering, Swiss Made with Fifteen Jewels, original dial with second hand, Roman Numerals 1-12 & Arabic Numerals 13-24, in excellent condition & full working order. - Sold for £160 Lot 66 A Midland Railway Brass Signal Lever Plate "POINTS DOWN LOOP & THROUGH CONNECTION", 4" x 5". - Sold for £20 Lot 67 A GWR Sign from the "TREGENNA CASTLE HOTEL" at St Ives, "TO ROOMS 94, 97 TO 70, 16", polished wood with cast letters, chamfered edge & scalloped corners, 18"x 9", branded "GWR" on the back. - Sold for £0 Lot 68 A Locomotive Worksplate "L&NER, 8956, DONCASTER WORKS 1926", from a LNER Class J50/3 0-6-0T, a post-grouping development of a GNR Gresley design, built at Doncaster in September 1926, works No 1653, LNER 622. It was renumbered 8956 in 1946, becoming BR 68956. It was allocated new to Eastfield for shunting at Sighthill and Cadder Yards, remaining there all its working life until withdrawn in September 1960, and was cut up the same month at nearby Cowlairs Works. Brass oval 9"x5", background repainted red long ago, lettering, beading & back all untouched. - Sold for £200 Lot 69 A BR(Sc) double royal poster "EDINBURGH, The Scott Monument See Britain By Train", by Claude Buckle, a dramatic view of the Gardens below Princes Street with the city's Georgian buildings beyond, minor edge wear & slight damage to the word "Scottish" in the small printing details at base. - Sold for £130 Lot 70 A GWR Lamp Glass "MAIDENHEAD", raised blue lettering on frosted background, 15"x 3_", as fitted to the top of a platform lamp, Ex Paddington-Reading Main Line & Junction for the Marlow & High Wycombe branches. - Sold for £130 Lot 71 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "ALDRINGTON HALT", (f/f), with "Halt" in lower panel, Ex LB&SCR Brighton-Portsmouth route between Hove & Portslade, just east of Dyke Junction, the Halt opened in 1905 as Dyke Junction Halt and was renamed in 1932. Excellent colour & shine with two tiny repairs just into green at base, unnoticeable & a few flange chips neatly painted in. - Sold for £680 Lot 72 A Carriage Print "HALESWORTH, SUFFOLK, from a watercolour by F.W.Baldwin", from the LNER Post War Series, a very scarce print of the town, little changed today other than the presence of road traffic. - Sold for £340 Lot 73 A GWR Lamp Glass "TWYFORD", black engraved lettering on white china/glass plate, 15"x 3_", as fitted in the top of a platform lamp, Ex Paddington-Reading Main Line. - Sold for £80 Lot 74 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "41319" from a (LMS) Class 2, 2-6-2T built at Crewe in 1952. A Southern Region allocated engine, it spent time on the Eastern Section at Ramsgate, Three Bridges and Tunbridge Wells West before moving in July 1959 to Eastleigh where it remained for almost eight years before a final brief stay at Nine Elms from where it was withdrawn in July 1967. It was stored at Weymouth shed for seven months before being cut up at Kings, Norwich in April 1968, totally ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £760 Lot 75 A builders plate "ROBERT C KEEN, MAKERS, NORTH STOKE, OXON", cast iron rectangle 13"x2_", original unrestored condition. - Sold for £20 Lot 76 A SHEDPLATE "31B", (March 1949-63), repainted on front long ago & with ER casting code visable on front lower left. - Sold for £110 Lot 77 A Southern Railway Target Sign "WESTERHAM", the Terminus of the Ex SECR Branch line from Dunton Green on the main line to Hastings, usual edge chipping otherwise a good example. A great rarity being offered only once before and notable for Westerham being the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Ben Dorain in the background & the West Highland Way to the fore, one of the finest posters of the last forty years. - Sold for £180 Lot 94 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 63444 ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH 1920" from a NER Class T2, LNER Class Q6, 0-8-0 built by Armstrong Whitworth in August 1920, Works No 35, NER No 2287. It retained this number under the LNER until renumbered 3444 in 1947, becoming BR 63444. It spent its later years at Borough Gardens, Blaydon and finally Sunderland from where it was withdrawn in May 1965. It was cut up two months later at M Baum, Cleveland Dockyard, Middlesbrough, brass oval 9"x 5", with number on brass strip "3444" clearly visable under strip, the plate is cleaned but not painted. - Sold for £280 Lot 95 A Small SR Three Aspect Handlamp, used on THE LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY at Pilton Yard, by cleaner E.J. Heale, together with various letters to Mr Heale (SR and one Lynton and Barnstaple Rly letterhead) concerning employment, leave, transfers, etc. together with their envelopes, some refer to Pilton Yard (L&B) where Mr Heale worked. The lamp is a good 3-aspect example with SR stamped on burner and body. A brass "E" (Eastleigh) plate on top with all fittings (except reflector and back catch). A design unique to the company, black on brown paintwork, probably of railway origin. - Sold for £150 Lot 110 A Tyers No 6 Rectangular Single Line Tablet "DERRY-LISAHALLY", covering the section from the Admiralty Base at Lisahally (to which captured U.Boats were escorted in WWII) into Londonderry Waterside. - Sold for £50 Lot 111 A GWR Carriage Compartment Footstool, upholstered with the "bowl of flowers" pattern moquette used in carriages. The side is marked "RETURN TO TORQUAY" and the underside branded "GWR & BR(W)". Also GWR "Return to Torquay" visible in shadow and a BR "Torquay" label. Folding leg removed from one side. An unusual item used by invalids returning from the resort. 28" x 21". - Sold for £180 Lot 112 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "42537" from a LMS Class 4 2-6-4T built at Derby in 1935, LMS No 2537, the first of the final group of Stanier 2-cylinder engines within this large class. A long serving Southport engine in BR days, it was withdrawn from there in September 1962 and then stored at its home shed until May 1963. It was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge the following month. Repainted. - Sold for £560 Lot 113 A Locomotive Worksplate "No 1040 GORTON 1952" from BR Class 76 electric locomotive 26033/ 76033 which entered traffic at Gorton in January 1952 and was withdrawn from Reddish in July 1981. It was cut up at Coopers Metals, Brightside in March 1983". Engraved brass oval, 12"x6_", face polished, BR loco blue paint all around rim. - Sold for £1100 Lot 114 A Single Line Key Token, "HARLECH-BARMOUTH SOUTH", alloy, original yellow paintwork, a coastal section on The Cambrian Railways, Dovey Jct-Pwllheli route. - Sold for £320 Lot 115 A Cambrian Railways Signal Box Block Bell with its original brass plate "CARNO" mounted on top, a large rectangular case with dovetail joints in light oak, in original condition. The decorative rectangular body is of cast iron construction though produced in a shape & style to imitate wood, it is varnished brown & "combed" to create a wood effect, two brass bowls are mounted on top with a raised indicator "Balance Scales" with two arrows & a brass embossed plate on the front "H.Pooley & Son Contractors L.M.S.R. 8127", case 22_"x 10" & 8" high, an unusual & interesting item, requires a little cleaning. - Sold for £70 Lot 119 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "EMSWORTH", (f/f), Ex LBSCR, Portsmouth-Brighton route between Chichester & Havant, excellent colour & shine, a rare example not previously offered at auction. - Sold for £850 Lot 120 A locomotive worksplate "SIR W.G.ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & CO (ENGINEERS) LTD NO 1337, 1936, SCOTSWOOD WORKS NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE", from a LMS Class 5, 4-6-0 No 5282/ 45282. Its later sheds included Crewe North, Workington, Holyhead, Llandudno Junction, Chester, Springs Branch and Edge Hill from where it was withdrawn in May 1968. After a period in store at Heaton Mersey shed, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh in October 1968. Brass rectangle 8_"x 5", bolt holes intact, though cracks to top two, ex loco condition. - Sold for £120 Lot 121 A North Staffordshire Railway silver director's pass with full company title and coat of arms. Garter decoration on one side, on the other "Free Pass" with the company's knot emblem in the centre and engraved "Thomas William Harris No. 48". Complete with top ring to attach to watch chain. The pass has obviously been used over time but all lettering and detail is clearly defined. - Sold for £300 Lot 122 A SHEDPLATE "32A", (Norwich 1949-62), appears unrestored, but characters may have been repainted long ago. - Sold for £110 Lot 123 An Industrial Locomotive Cabside Plate "N.C.B. SM AREA, No 24, 1969", from an 0-6-0 DH, built by Hunslet in 1969, works No. 6690. It went new to Coventry Colliery and is believed to have spent all of its working life there until the Colliery closed. Alloy rectangle, 24_" x 9", ex loco condition with original red & black paintwork. - Sold for £90 Lot 124 A Southern Railway Carriage Print "NEAR BLETCHINGLEY, SURREY, a View from The Castle Hill, by Donald Maxwell", from the original SR series issued in 1936. Its later sheds were Treherbert, Abercynon, Cathays again and finally Merthyr from where it was withdrawn in June 1963. After a period in store at Merthyr, it was cut up at Hayes, Bridgend in May 1964. The station was between Ollerton & Warsop on the route from Chesterfield (Market Place) to Dukeries Junction and Lincoln. Edwinstowe closed on 2nd Jan 1956. The lamp glass has a central crack & damage at left end, the lamp requires reglazing, the case is sound & retains its makers plate "Lamp Manufacturing Co, Sole Owners of Ridsdales Railway Lamps, Leonard St, City Rd, London" (embossed brass), solid copper body & cast corner decorations, door hinges require re-fixing, a lovely old lamp well worth restoring. - Sold for £400 Lot 166 A shedplate "16D", (Mansfield 1948-55), (Annesley 1958-63) and (Nottingham 1963-65). Repainted over original paintwork. - Sold for £55 Lot 167 A tenderplate "GNR(I) 104 B2 MAKERS 1910 DUNDALK" from the first Class B2 2500 gallons tender, 5' 3" gauge, most likely coupled new to a Great Northern Railway of Ireland Class PP 4-4-0. Oval brass, 9"x5", unrestored, the company has removed the letter "I" long ago & obviously during the loco's service. - Sold for £140 Lot 168 A static model of a GWR 1400 Class 0-4-2T, approximately 5_" gauge, 36" long and 14" tall, mainly of plastic and well detailed including cab fittings and "1439" cabside numberplates. Mounted on wooden track and base. - Sold for £320 Lot 169 A GWR cast iron CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "GWR 385" from a Taff Vale Railway "A" Class 0-6-2T designed by John Cameron, his first design for the Company, and built by Hawthorn Leslie in 1920, works no 3400, Taff Vale No 165, one of a Class intended primarily for passenger work. After the TVR amalgamated with the GWR in 1922, it was renumbered 385 with the GWR initials above to show it was an absorbed engine. It was shedded at Merthyr in 1922 and later at Pontypool Road with final brief stays at Aberdare, Abercynon, Cardiff East Dock, Treherbert and finally Cardiff Cathays from where it was withdrawn in April 1957. Ex loco paintwork, the back repainted with loco details. - Sold for £3400 Lot 170 A Playing Board for an early Railway Game, comprising four hinged sections & coloured map of routes from "Euston LNWR" "St Pancras MR" & "Kings Cross GNR" to "Waverley Stn", shows intermediate stations on each route & distances for play, most stations appear to be the obvious choices but some are obscure & of interest eg Carlton, Reston Jct, Trent Jct, Longtown, Dalkeith, Tebay Jct, Symington. It kept its NER number at the grouping, was renumbered 5815 by the LNER in 1946 and became BR 65815 in 1948. It spent its final years at South Blyth and North Blyth from where it was withdrawn in November 1966. It was cut at Thomsons, Stockton-on-Tees in March 1967. - Sold for £660 Lot 181 A TENDERPLATE "BR5 353 1951" from a 5000 gallon tender coupled to a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 No 77283 built by North British Locomotive Co in 1944, Works No 24954. It saw war service in Belgium from new, returned to the UK in February 1947 when it was loaned to the LNER and was purchased by BR in December 1948 becoming No 90352. BR(W) 1960, excellent condition, rolled with light folds. - Sold for £370 Lot 192 A BR Enamel Warning Notice "BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION, NOTICE, THE MERCHANT SHIPPING, DANGEROUS GOODS RULES, 1952.....Apply to this FERRY SERVICE....", red on white, 20"x 18", the sign was used at Ryde Pier Head. - Sold for £85 Lot 193 A locomotive worksplate "LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY NO 1930 BUILT DARLINGTON 1944" from the Thompson Class A2/1 4-6-2 "HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN" originally numbered 3696, renumbered 507 in 1946, becoming BR 60507. It was allocated new to Darlington in May 1944 and quickly moved on to Heaton and Kings Cross later the same year. In December 1949 it was transferred to the Scottish Region and spent all its remaining years north of the border mainly at Haymarket but with brief spells at Aberdeen Ferryhill and St Margarets from where it was withdrawn in December 1960. It was cut up at Doncaster Works the following month. Fully engraved brass oval 13"x7 9/16", face lightly polished, otherwise original condition with well tarnished back, bearing No "507" & the usual marks. It was cut up by V Berry at BR Thornton in February 1987. 8"x 6", the loco's main worksplate, chromed brass, Ex loco condition with loco paint. - Sold for £620 Lot 201 A Locomotive Worksplate "No 2125 DARLINGTON 1950" from (LMS) Class 4, 2-6-0 No 43083. Its later sheds were New England and Boston from where it was withdrawn in December 1963. After a period in store at Colwick shed, it was cut up at Looms, Spondon by May 1964. Engraved brass, 12_"x6_", face lightly polished, back original condition. - Sold for £0 Lot 202 A London & South Western Railway Guards Whistle, "The Acme Thunderer" on top & "L&SWR" on lip in serif lettering, the underside marked "Hudsons Patent". - Sold for £90 Lot 203 A SHEDPLATE "8F", (Springs Branch, 1958-67). At the right base, a brass cancel button with brass surround, overall 30" high, the decorative location plate refers to the route through Kelvinbridge & Crow Road North West of Queen Street Station, a magnificent example. - Sold for £750 Lot 207 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "SHERBORNE", (f/f), ex LSWR West of England Main Line between Templecombe and Yeovil Junction. One face chip over "E" and three edge chips (two just into green), excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £1200 Lot 208 A County Donegal Railway Joint Committee Detonator Canister with brass plate "C.D.R.J.C" on side & stamped "ENGINE No 11", 8" high. No. 11 was a 4-4-4T, built 1901 and named "HERCULES" and was withdrawn in 1933. The CDR also acquired a diesel which had been built in 1929 for the Clougher Valley line which became CDR No. 11. It was named "PHOENIX". The can is in excellent original condition. - Sold for £80 Lot 209 A Great Southern & Western Railway coat of arms transfer, on framed board, overall 16_"x19", mounted long ago & still bearing a picture framers label & phone number "Shepherds Bush, 4833". - Sold for £80 Lot 210 A Solid Brass Single Line Staff "OLD BUCKLEY-NORTHROP HALL", of hexagonal shape, 16" long, probably designed to fit a staff & ticket box, Ex Great Central Railway, Buckley Junction-Connahs Quay route, the route lost its passenger service in 1895, when bypassed by the New WMCQ line via Harwarden but was retained for freight to Northrop Hall Goods & Knowle Lane Works at Buckley, use ceased in 1965, a lovely old example with prominent engraving. - Sold for £380 Lot 211 A small pattern NER cast iron trespass notice "NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, NOTICE Any Person Found Trespassing On This Railway Will Be Liable To A Penalty Of Forty Shillings, Which Will Be Strictly Enforced, R.F.Dunnell, Secretary", 27"x17" with original orange paintwork & Secretary name added on a separate plate. These small trespass notices are by comparison infinitely rarer than the large & heavy NER examples that often turn up. Numbers repainted long ago & old BR weld between the "0" & the "4", otherwise original condition. - Sold for £550 Lot 218 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "NO UNAUTHORISED PERSON IS ALLOWED TO USE OR INTERFERE WITH THIS LIFT......etc" (nine lines of text), 18"x 10", chips to three corners & one minor chip on face away from lettering; also similar sign "SEASON TICKETS" maroon enamel, painted lettering, 12_"x5_", one corner chip, both ex Harrow & Wealdstone. (2) - Sold for £85 Lot 219 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "GARVE", (h/f), Ex Highland Railway, Kyle of Lochalsh line, situated between Lochluichart & Achterneed, from the station the line climbs at 1 in 50 both east & west to Raven Rock & Corriemeille Summits, good colour, minor edge chips (one just into blue) & some loss of shine due to the station's wild location. - Sold for £750 Lot 220 A NAMEPLATE "WOOLSTON GRANGE" from the GWR 6800 "Grange" Class 4-6-0 No 6858 built at Swindon and allocated new in December 1937 to Tyseley where it spent most of its working life apart from spells in the late 1950s and 1960s at Shrewsbury, Laira, Oxford and Oxley with the odd month or two elsewhere. It was withdrawn in October 1965 from Tyseley and stored there for three months before being cut up at Cohens, Kingsbury in February 1966. The actual Grange is at Winchcombe in Gloucestershire. The front of the plate has been professionally restored long ago. Its BR sheds were Darlington and West Auckland from where it was withdrawn in November 1960. It was cut up at Darlington Works the same month after a working life of over 73 years, brass oval 9"x5", front repainted. - Sold for £260 Lot 225 A Carriage Print "STOKESAY CASTLE, NEAR LUDLOW, SHROPSHIRE, from a water colour by Frank Sherwin", from the Western Region Series issued in 1954, a quaint view of the historic buildings near to the Central Wales Junction on the Shrewsbury-Hereford Line. - Sold for £70 Lot 226 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRUSH TRACTION, ENGLAND No 288 1961" from BR Type 2 A1A-A1A Class 31 No D5687/ 31259 which was allocated new to Darnall in February 1961 and withdrawn from Tinsley in March 1989. It was cut up at V Berry, Leicester in April 1990, oval alloy 9_"x6_", cleaned, but with plenty of traces of original loco paint. - Sold for £180 Lot 227 A LONDON & BRIGHTON RAILWAY Policeman's Truncheon, with the full "1837" coat of arms with crown at top, the makers name "Parker, Holborn" at the end of the banded handle, excellent for age, part of the word Railway worn away otherwise the company name & date etc clear & displaying the usual knocks from day to day use. - Sold for £600 Lot 228 A BR(S) Enamel station sign "LADIES", in the experimental pink colour, 24"x18", face chips & one edge chip well away from lettering, otherwise good colour & shine. - Sold for £50 Lot 229 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 4986 DARLINGTON WORKS 1941" from a LNER J39 Class 0-6-0 which entered traffic in July 1941 as LNER No 3096. It was renumbered 4986 in 1946 and became BR 64986. Its later sheds were St Margarets, Dalry Road and Thornton Junction from where it was withdrawn in December 1962. The Colliery and engine were taken over by the National Coal Board on 1 January 1947 under Area 4 (Aberdare) of its No 7 Division. A great rarity as the company was absorbed by the Cambrian Railway in 1864. - Sold for £170 Lot 292 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "BARNSTAPLE TOWN-POTTINGTON", (brass/steel), Ex LSWR Barnstaple Junction -Ilfracombe route, this short section on the bank of the River Taw runs from the Town Station by the end of the single track river bridge to Pottington Box, where the route became double track, the route closed on the 5th Oct 1970. A lovely old tablet with hand cut lettering. After eight months in store at Southall it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in March 1964, repainted long ago. - Sold for £370 Lot 299 A group of GWR Badges & Paychecks, (a-c) GWR chromed coat of arms badges, one large & two small, believed to be police collar badges; Paychecks (d) GWR Loco W'hampton, (e) Loco Carr, GWR, both brass, pear shape, (f) GWR Signal Dept, Pay Cheque, square copper, (g) GWR Loco Dept, rectangular brass, all with raised lettering, (h) "GWR, CT", square base metal with angled corners, stamped lettering. (8) - Sold for £160 Lot 300 A NAMEPLATE "LADY GODIVA", an impressive 62" long, incorporating its building date "Built Crewe July 1903" and its "F.W. Webb's System" appendage, from a LNWR "Alfred the Great" Class 4-4-0 compound, one of the last batch to be built and one of only seven of the Class of 40 not rebuilt as 2-cylinder simples and which were thus entitled to retain the appendage to the end. It was cut up in December 1922. This is one of only four nameplates known to survive with the appendage present (the others are both sides of No. 1974 "Howe" and one side of No. 1944 "Victoria and Albert"). Change at Eaglescliffe For Stockton & West Hartlepool", 33"x18", double sided white on black, Ex Darlington Bank Top. - Sold for £290 Lot 312 A Diesel Locomotive Nameplate "LYTHAM ST ANNES", a wooden plate carried by BR Class 45 No D60/ 45022 built by BR Crewe and allocated new to Derby in February 1962. It was withdrawn from Tinsley in July 1987 when it went into Departmental Stock as 97409. This plate was fitted after BR had removed the original alloy nameplates. It was purchased from Collector's Corner at Euston in the late 1980s. The plate measured 55" x 6", the back marked "This plate is the property of P.R. Hodgkiss, Tinsley, TMD. In the event of this loco being withdrawn please return". In the actual event British Rail removed the plate from the locomotive when it was withdrawn and sold it along with many other diesel plates. It shows clear signs of being carried for a significant period prior to the locomotive's withdrawal. - Sold for £360 Lot 313 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "63698" from a GCR Robinson Class 8K, LNER O4 Class, 2-8-0 built by Kitson & Co in 1912, works no 4899, GCR/LNER No 6191. It was renumbered 3538 in 1946 and 3698 in 1947, becoming BR 63698. Its later sheds included Immingham, Mexborough and Doncaster from where it withdrawn in December 1962. In the lower panel, there is a repair & distortion at left end & a chip repair lower right, a rare example offered only once at auction fourteen years ago. - Sold for £1200 Lot 318 A GWR cast iron CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "GWR 31" from a Rhymney Railway R Class 0-6-2T designed by Hurry Riches and built by Robert Stephenson & Co in 1907, works no 3289, Rhymney No 2, one of a Class of 15 engines designed for working the heaviest coal and iron ore traffic. After the Rhymney amalgamated with the GWR in 1922, it was numbered 31 and was rebuilt in 1929 at Caerphilly Works with a GWR taper boiler. In RR days it was shedded at Cardiff Docks and later at the new GWR shed at Cardiff East Dock. Its final shed was Radyr from where it was withdrawn in March 1951 and it was cut up at Swindon the following October. This is the lowest numbered GWR cabside to appear in auction and the first number below 40. A delightful two figure number with company initials above, indicating an absorbed loco & the beading stamped with loco details. Much original paintwork, back repainted and marked with loco details. - Sold for £3300 Lot 319 A NAMEPLATE "SADDLEBACK" from a BR Class 60 No 60048 built by Brush and allocated new to Toton in June 1991. It was named when built after the mountain in Cumbria, near Keswick, and the nameplates were removed in September 1997. The plate is accompanied by its sale certificate from EWS. 45_"x9_", original paintwork & nice crusty back. - Sold for £2600 Lot 320 An early station direction sign "METROPOLITAN RAILY. STATION" with pointing finger. White on dark blue, double sided 26"x 6", one side has edge chipping & a face chip, the other is damaged, makers name at right base "IC.EC 61 Farringdon Road E.C". - Sold for £500 Lot 321 A French CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "SNCF 231,D,230" from an ex PLM Class 231-D 4-cylinder compound 4-6-2 express passenger engine built by Schneider in 1925, Works No 4243, PLM No 230. It retained its number on the formation of the SNCF in 1927 and was scrapped in 1955. 19_" x 12" including raised portion at top, background repainted maroon, characters and back untouched. The plate is of heavy grey alloy construction. - Sold for £140 Lot 322 A Directors Pass "EASTERN COUNTIES RAILWAY, FREE PASS, NOT TRANSFERABLE/WILLIAM FENTON ESQ", ivory rectangle 2"x1", the company became part of the Great Eastern Railway in 1862, so an early & unusual example of great historical interest. - Sold for £520 Lot 323 A GWR cast iron CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "4602" from a 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon and allocated new to Ludlow in October 1941. Its later sheds were Shrewsbury, Chester, Stourbridge Junction and finally Oxley from where it was withdrawn in November 1964. It was cut up three months later at Cashmores, Great Bridge. Very old paintwork, gold on black with black back, probably repainted long ago. - Sold for £520 Lot 324 A WORKSPLATE "Manufactured at Crewe 1989 BREL" from a BR 25kv Class 91 Bo-Bo electric locomotive, a class of 31 engines built between 1988 and 1991 but only 91010 was built in 1989. It was modified in 1965 (to a Class 29) and its short working life came to an end when based at Eastfield in October 1971. It was cut up just over a year later at BREL Glasgow. Alloy diamond 14"x6_" in ex loco condition with BR Loco green paint, back marked "6103". - Sold for £400 Lot 329 A Locomotive Worksplate "LMS BUILT 1925 CREWE". The back still bears its delivery label "WH Smith & Son, To The Station Master...Station. - Sold for £290 Lot 334 A NAMEPLATE "OLTON HALL" from the GWR 4900 "Hall" Class 4-6-0 No 5972 built at Swindon and allocated new to Neath in April 1937. Its later sheds included Cardiff Canton, Carmarthen, Laira, Tyseley, Oxley, Truro, Penzance, Severn Tunnel Junction, Neath again, Goodwick and finally Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn in December 1963. After four months in store at Cardiff East Dock, it was moved to Woodham Brothers, Barry Docks, from where it was acquired for preservation and its restoration was complete by July 1985. In recent times it has earned considerable fame by playing a starring role in the series of "Harry Potter" films where it hauls the school special known as the Hogwarts Express. The series of books by J.K. Rowling (on which the films are faithfully based) have been a world-wide phenomenon. The actual Hall is in Solihull, 4 miles south-east of Birmingham, and is now a pub, the Olton Tavern. A lovely GWR plate in original condition from a loco with a fascinating modern history. - Sold for £6700 Lot 335 A Smokebox Numberplate "5972" Ex GWR Hall Class 4-6-0 "OLTON HALL" (see previous lot), ex loco condition (in the Harry Potter films refered to above, the locomotive is seen on numerous occasions carrying a 5972 smokebox numberplate). This LSWR Hampshire Branch Closed to Passengers on the 8th June 1953, with freight ceasing in 1969. The branch was regularly used by Royal Trains. - Sold for £220 Lot 338 A Newcastle Tramway Cast Iron Finial, as used on the top of the posts carrying the electric wires, 18" high with large ball & ring around lower part of spike, light green original paintwork. - Sold for £120 Lot 339 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "76081" from a BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0 built at Horwich and allocated new to Lower Darwen in February 1957 for working local passenger and freight duties and also holiday specials to Blackpool. It remained at Lower Darwen for most of its short working life with final stays at Sutton Oak in December and Springs Branch (Wigan) from where it was withdrawn in July 1967. After four months in store at Springs Branch, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in 1967. A neat weld between "0 & 8" & paint matched to the rest of the ex loco front, back repainted. - Sold for £400 Lot 340 A Great Western Railway fully titled Cast Iron Trespass Notice of pre-grouping style, 30"x 21" with text in attractive serif lettering, the front has been cleaned & attractively repainted. - Sold for £85 Lot 341 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Key Tablet "SNETTISHAM-HEACHAM", (brass/steel), Ex GER Kings Lynn-Hunstanton Line, closed on the 5th May 1969. - Sold for £210 Lot 342 A Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1955 SWINDON". The face showing "Train On Line/Line Blocked/Line Clear" positions & 2-6. with rotating needle above tapper & commutator. A crescent shaped aperture with brass surround indicates "Trains On & Permissive Line Clear & Trains Off", the case stamped "LYR" in several places, lacks brass side catches, otherwise excellent. - Sold for £420 Lot 350 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 65741 DARLINGTON WORKS 1904" from a NER Class P2, LNER J26 Class, 0-6-0 built at Darlington Works in October 1904, NER No 1057. It retained this number under the LNER until renumbered 5741 in 1946, becoming BR 65741. It spent its final years at Newport and then at the new Thornaby shed, from where it was withdrawn in October 1961. It was cut up at Darlington Works two months later. Cast iron oval, 9"x 5", front repainted white on red. - Sold for £0 Lot 351 A Midland & Great Northern Joint Rly, Platform Lamp Case "WEYBOURNE", Ex Cromer-Melton Constable route, closed 6th April 1964, the station name is on a frosted glass panel with raised blue glass lettering, the body is of steel construction with a copper roof & chimney, unrestored with some rusting & dents to copper roof, overall 23" high & complete with glass (no interior). - Sold for £260 Lot 352 A GWR Mirror in good quality mahogany polished frame with gilt inner bands, original backing, branded with company initials, 17"x 21" overall excellent with some "blooming" on mirror due to age. - Sold for £50 Lot 353 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "4252" from a GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon and allocated new to Swansea East Dock in March 1917. Its later sheds were Neath, Llantrisant, Ebbw Junction, Aberdare and finally Neath again from where it was withdrawn in September 1963. After a period in store at Neath, it was cut up at Hayes, Bridgend in June 1964. The front repainted, the back untouched, ex loco condition. - Sold for £310 Lot 354 A Belfast & Northern Counties/LMS. NCC wooden cased Semaphore Signal Repeater with distant signal arm on brass post with decorative finial, 8_"x4_", from Greensland Cabin where it indicated No 48 facing points at Bleach Green Junction, controlling trains for the Larne & Londonderry Lines. - Sold for £95 Lot 355 An LMS Dining Car Attendants Uniform, comprising jacket with six "LMS DINING CAR SERVICE" flat nickel buttons & two further buttons on a clip to fasten jacket, thick silver decorative wire braid around collar, lapels & cuff & "Attendant" embroidered in silver braid on each lapel, also matching trousers with blue piping. This magnificent uniform was worn by a Mr Jesson of Rugby who worked for the LMS Dining Car Service in the 1920/1930s. It is accompanied by copies of photographs of Jesson & other staff working the Cars & also The Royal Train, including a shot of staff in tin hats. The finest uniform we have seen with good history & provenence. (We sold the first of this pair of uniforms in our October sale) - Sold for £160 Lot 356 A WORKSPLATE "London & North Eastern Railway 3579 Built Doncaster 1914" from a GNR Class J22, LNER J6 Class 0-6-0, Doncaster Works No 1439, GNR No 579. It became LNER 3579 in 1926, was renumbered 4228 in 1946 and became BR 64228 in 1949. It finished its days at New England from where it was withdrawn in August 1959 and was cut up immediately at Doncaster Works. Brass oval, 9"x 5", with number strip, background repainted red long ago, brass lightly polished, back untouched and with "3579" stamped in back. - Sold for £220 Lot 357 A BR Platform Ticket Machine, to issue paper tickets from roll, rectangular, with angled top & base & orange Paintwork. The machine incorporates an illuminated sign "Platform Tickets", Manufactured by Automatic Associates, complete with key, brass fittings around coin slot and plate "Insert 3 x 2p coins". The machine dates from the early 1950s. 36"x13", 10" deep. - Sold for £90 Lot 358 A GWR Wooden Cased Track Circuit Indicator with pivoting red banner showing "Track Occupied/Clear", positions, an old ivorine plate above "Up Goods Loop, in rear of starting", lovely ex box condition. - Sold for £460 Lot 359 A French CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "2-S.N.C.F.232.S.001" from a SNCF standard gauge Class 232 4-cylinder compound 4-6-4 express passenger engine built by SACM in 1941, Works No 7760, rebuilt in 1953 and withdrawn in 1963. One of a class of only four very powerful express passenger engines built experimentally and curtailed by the 2nd WW, so a rare plate. Cast in a heavy metal alloy, 18_"x8_", the surround with fixing holes removed or else designed to slot in. In BR days it was at Patricroft for many years before moving to Midland main line duties in 1959 at Derby and then Burton-on-Trent from where it was withdrawn in December 1963. Front repainted black long ago, back in good original condition. - Sold for £7400 Lot 363 A Great Western Railway Pocket Watch, by "Record", the back engraved GWR.O.1563, with Fifteen Jewels & Swiss Made, the face & movement bear the makers name, working order, with second hand, Roman numerals & with BR 1984 receipt. - Sold for £180 Lot 364 An LMS Target Sign "PENKRIDGE", Ex LNWR Wolverhampton-Stafford Main Line, repainted white on maroon long ago, 48" long. - Sold for £300 Lot 365 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "47432" from a LMS "Jinty" Class 3F 0-6-0T built by Hunslet in 1926, Works No 1516, LMS No 16515, and renumbered 7432 in 1934. Its later sheds included Grimesthorpe, Brunswick, Cricklewood and Willesden from where it was withdrawn in August 1965. It was cut up at Birds, Bridgend the following February. The Station was opened by the Southern in 1930, excellent colour & shine with just minor surface marks. - Sold for £250 Lot 370 A nameplate "INTERNATIONAL YOUTH YEAR 1985" and its matching circular badge from BR Class 37 No 37191, named at Glasgow Central Station on 21 January 1985 by Fiona Cameron, Chairman of the Scottish Committee of International Youth Year, to mark BR's support for the Youth Year. The nameplates were removed ten months later. The nameplate 56_" x 175/8" with red background, ex loco paintwork, the badge 10" diameter featuring a group of three heads surrounded by the olive leaf emblem of the United Nations. The set is accompanied by a framed colour photograph of the loco, at Tulloch on the West Highland Line, a route which it frequently worked. - Sold for £1000 Lot 371 A GWR Locomotive Cab Notice "CAUTION, DO NOT LOOK OVER OR PASS ALONG THE SIDE OF THIS CAB, WHEN NEAR BRIDGES, TUNNELS, LOADGAUGES OR COAL STAGES, JAN 1909", 11_"X7 3/8", rectangular with curved corners, ex loco condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 372 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 61437 DARLINGTON WORKS 1923" from a (NER) Raven Class S3 LNER B16 Class 4-6-0 built at Darlington in January 1923 as LNER No 2366. It was renumbered 1437 in 1946 and spent almost all its BR days at York before moving to Hull Dairycoates from where it was withdrawn in June 1964. It then made the short journey to Drapers yard to be cut up the following October. Brass oval 9"x5", background repainted black, the back in ex loco condition. - Sold for £200 Lot 373 A Great Western Railway untitled Cast Iron Notice "NOTICE THIS ACCOMMODATION BRIDGE, MUST NOT BE USED BY ANY VEHICLE WITH A TOTAL WEIGHT, INCLUDING LOAD EXCEEDING SIX TONS", 21_"x 20", original chocolate & cream paintwork, the sign has the unique GWR pattern border similar in style to that on the Private Path & Road Notices. - Sold for £250 Lot 374 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRUSH TRACTION NO 710 1964" from the prototype BR Bo-Bo No 10800 built by the North British Locomotive Co in July 1950, Works No 26413, and allocated new to Willesden. It was withdrawn in August 1959 and went to the Brush Works at Loughborough in 1961 for conversion to a mobile test bed. The work was completed in 1964 and the loco named "HAWK" at the time this worksplate was fitted. This use continued until 1968 and the locomotive was cut up in 1972 except the bogies, which survived until 1976, and the engine, which may still survive at the Brush factory. Oval alloy, 9_"x 5_". Front painted black, lettering white, probably ex loco paint. It was L&Y no 596 and LMS no 11446. In its later years it was famous as one of the Crewe Works shunters and survived as such until withdrawn in February 1962 after a total working life of 81 years. Each cast iron, faces painted red, backs lightly cleaned, from a Romanian State Rlys (CFR) 2-10-0, of German design, 292 engines were built between 1946 & 1969 by Resita & Malaxa, they were mixed traffic locos used all over the system & particularly in the mountainous Carpathian Area. It was renumbered 920 in 1946, becoming BR 60920. A Scottish Region engine, its later sheds were Dundee Tay Bridge, Haymarket and St Margarets from where it was withdrawn in October 1962. It was then stored at Bathgate shed until August 1963 and cut up the following month at Cowlairs Works, superb ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £560 Lot 452 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "CATTERICK CAMP JCT-CATTERICK CAMP" (fibre), ex NER Richmond branch where a short branch ran from Catterick to the Military Camp. - Sold for £220 Lot 453 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "90291" from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built by North British Locomotive Co in 1944, Works No 25289, WD No 77419. It was loaned to the LNER from new, then to the GWR, recalled by the WD at the end of 1944 and loaned again to the LNER in 1947. It was purchased by BR in 1948 becoming 90291. Its later sheds were Newton Heath and Rose Grove from where it was withdrawn in February 1965. It was cut up three months later at Cashmores, Great Bridge. It then moved to Oxford and finally Didcot from where it was withdrawn in March 1965. It was cut up at Swindon Works the following month. No E591, handed over to the SAR in January 1963, was the first main-line electric engine constructed in South Africa. It then spent another ten years at Severn Tunnel Junction with a final stay at Banbury from where it was withdrawn in May 1964. It was cut up at Cohens, Kettering by the following October.
