Lot 1 A BR(S) light green Enamel Doorplate "MOTORMEN", (f/f), excellent colour & shine & retaining the brass spacers in the screw holes, one minute flake to lower right hole & very small rim chips lower left & top right, away from face. - Sold for £580

Lot 2 A Great Western Railway Pre-Grouping Copper Top Three Aspect Handlamp, with interior fittings, (copper topped vessel, stamped "GWR"), oval brass numberplate "15256". The case stamped "GWR Swindon SF", brass bezel, excellent condition, though lacks red glass. - Sold for £170

Lot 3 An Enamel Notice "GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY, THE BOOKING OFFICE WINDOWS WILL BE OPENED FOR THE ISSUE OF TICKETS 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE ADVERTISED TIME OF DEPARTURE OF EACH TRAIN, Passengers Are Requested To Examine Their Tickets & Change Before Leaving The Booking Window", white on dark blue, 11" square, excellent condition, one tiny face chip (not on lettering) & minor edge chips, excellent colour & shine, ex Brightlingsea Station, Essex. - Sold for £800

Lot 4 A Platform Lamp, LNWR/LMS Pattern with label at top front "SWANSEA VICTORIA", a square vessel & brass burner inside (no glass chimney) & large reflector on back of case, overall 14" x 28", inc copper chimney & handle, 10" deep. The station was the Terminus of the LNWR route from Shrewsbury via Central Wales & closed on the 15th June 1964. Excellent other than left side, plain glass which is cracked. - Sold for £500

Lot 5 An LBSCR Wagon or Coach Plate "LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY, 9574, To Carry 10 TONS", oval cast iron, 15" x 9_", generally original condition with just the numbers repainted long ago, one of the largest & most impressive plates of its type. - Sold for £210

Lot 6 A Shedplate "10A", (Springs Branch 1948-58 then Carnforth 1963-68), front repainted. - Sold for £70

Lot 7 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 2831, DARLINGTON WORKS, 1931", from the LNER B17 Class 4-6-0 "SERLBY HALL" built at Darlington in May 1931, LNER No 2831. It was renumbered 1631 in 1946 becoming BR No 61631. Its main BR sheds were Cambridge and Ipswich with brief stays in between at March and Stratford. It was withdrawn from Ipswich in April 1959 and cut up at Doncaster Works the following month. The actual hall is near Retford in Nottinghamshire, brass oval, 9" x 5", lightly cleaned. - Sold for £1150

Lot 8 A Webb & Thompson Large Single Line Train Staff "CHARD-ILMINSTER", Ex GWR Taunton-Chard Branch which left the main line at Creech Junction & joined the LSWR branch from Chard Junction. The GW Route Closed to Passengers on the 10th September 1962 & Freight on 6th July 1964. - Sold for £1000

Lot 9 An Enamel Advertising Sign "ASSOCIATED MOTORWAYS, Regular Services, Day & Night, Express Coach Services,..Book Here...Head Office, Coach Station, Cheltenham Spa", 20" x 30". The sign features a classic coach of the period & map of the country, showing routes & towns served, with a similar coach at top, a colourful sign in red, green, black, blue & white, excellent condition with good colour & shine, minor chips at two base screwholes. - Sold for £320

Lot 10 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "DIDSBURY", (f/f), Ex Midland Rly Manchester-Derby Main Line between Chorlton-cum-Hardy & Heaton Mersey. Closed on 2nd Jan 1967, excellent colour & shine with one face chip on top line & the usual rim chips, a rare Totem offered once before at Auction in 1992. - Sold for £1100

Lot 11 A Single Line Key Token, "MALLAIG JCT-SPEAN BRIDGE", (brass). The final section of the N.B.R. West Highland Line, running through The "Great Glen". - Sold for £150

Lot 12 A small Carriage Roof Board "DUNS/RESTON", original black on white paintwork, 32_" x 3_", edge chips to paint neatly touched in. Ex NBR, St Boswells-Reston Jct route between the Waverley Route & East Coast Main Line. The central section of line was completely closed in 1948 leaving the Duns-Reston section, passenger services continued until 10th Sept 1951 & freight until 1966. - Sold for £150

Lot 13 A Somerset & Dorset Railway Signal Finial, of cruciform pattern on square base, the square base of the upper section seated at 45 degrees giving a diamond shape. This example was removed from Midsomer Norton. Unrestored with original white/red paint, overall 28" high. A distinctive pattern of finial, resembling the LSWR style but with solid cruciform and decoration below. - Sold for £380

Lot 14 A GWR Brass Signal Lever Plate "31, Disc For No 30...." This huge plate lists a further forty three numbers, an impressive 27" x 25/8", with four brackets to rear, the largest example we have seen. - Sold for £600

Lot 15 A Promotional Model of a High Speed Train, comprising Class 43 Power Car & part of first coach, in original BR 1970s livery, 45" long, mounted on wooden base. These models were displayed in the windows of Travel Agents & Travel Centres to promote the new trains, wooden construction and painted to a high standard. - Sold for £110

Lot 16 A Pair of McKenzie & Holland, NER Lever Plates, (a) "11, No 2 CROSSOVER", (b) "23, MAIN UP SIGNAL", both attractively shaped with scalloped corners & wax infill, the lever numbers on raised portion at top. (2) - Sold for £95

Lot 17 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1930, QUEENS PARK WORKS, No 24046", from GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT No 7758 which was allocated new to Tyseley in December 1930 and remained there until moving in April 1957 to Duffryn Yard from where it was withdrawn in June 1960. After periods in store at Swindon Works and Barry Docks, it was cut up at Woodhams, Barry by February 1962. Brass diamond, 15" x 6_". Ex loco condition & retaining brass fixings in top & bottom hole, the top of the right hand point blunted. - Sold for £180

Lot 18 A GNR Drawing Office Planimeter, for the precise measurement of distances on plans. The side is engraved "GNR, ENGINEERS OFFICE, PETERBOROUGH", brass & bone construction & contained in its original felt lined box. Excellent condition with just the cloth hinge of the box repaired. - Sold for £65

Lot 19 A Carriage Print "THREE SISTERS, GLENCOE, ARGYLE, (The Property Of The National Trust For Scotland), From a Water Colour by Frank Sherwin, R.I.", a dramatic West Highland view with the old road to Fort William in the foreground. - Sold for £200

Lot 20 A Small Midland Railway Conical Oil Can with spout, the company initials embossed on side in decorative script lettering, 5_" base diameter, 5" high, lightly cleaned. - Sold for £90

Lot 21 An LMS Enamel Station Direction Sign "TO GW RAILWAY STATION", black on yellow, double sided, 18" x 5", with screw holes at one end, top hole chipped & surface scratches on one side, the other excellent, both with good colour & shine. Being much smaller than usual, this example is from a location where GW & LMS Stations were adjacent or connected & where it was not necessary to leave railway property to transfer. Although there are various possibilities the likely contenders are Gloucester Eastgate, Lydney Junction or Highbridge (S&D JR), the latter being known to have had yellow enamel lamp tablets of the same colour scheme & therefore the most likely location. - Sold for £500

Lot 24 An Early "AA" Enamel Sign, "AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION, OTTERY ST MARY, Sidmouth 6, Seaton 11 _, London 155, Safety First (AA emblem)", diameter 30", face chips matched in, in places, but a generally good example for its age. The sign originates from the East Devon town not far from Sidmouth Junction on the LSWR Route to Exeter. - Sold for £240

Lot 25 A Carriage Roof Board, "PADDINGTON-TENBY-PEMBROKE DOCK", cream on maroon, original paintwork, 132" long. - Sold for £420

Lot 26 A Midland Railway Brass Signal Lever Plate "SIGNAL FROM CAMMELL LAIRDS", the reverse side reads "SIGNAL 2nd DOWN GOODS TO No 1 SHUNTING LINE", 4" x 5". - Sold for £85

Lot 27 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "63656" from a 2-8-0 built for the Ministry of Munitions to Robinson's GCR design by Kitson & Co in 1918, Works No 5203, ROD No 1617. It was shipped to France when new but returned to the UK in 1919 whereupon it was loaned to the GWR, becoming GWR No 3068. It was withdrawn from GWR service in 1922 and placed in store at Beachley near Chepstow. After the Grouping it was purchased by the LNER, becoming LNER Class O4/3 No 6363. It was renumbered 3656 in 1946, becoming BR No 63656. Its later sheds included Langwith Junction, Barnsley, Mexborough and Staveley GC from where it was withdrawn in December 1962. After a lengthy period in store at Staveley, it was cut up at Doncaster Works in February 1964. The plate has possibly been repainted long ago & has a little burn damage inside right bolt hole. - Sold for £620

Lot 28 A Cast Iron Notice "MID & GN JOINT RAILWAY, NOTICE, TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED", 19" x 12", the front repainted, this is the smaller GNR pattern sign. - Sold for £150

Lot 29 A GWR Enamel Notice "Great Western Railway, Notice, Steam Rollers, Traction Engines, Motor Lorries & Similar Vehicles Are Strictly Prohibited From Passing Over The Plate Of This Cart Weighbridge.....James Milne, Gen Manager Paddington Station, London", 10" x 14", two small face chips one on "O" of Notice the other above the word "Steam" & similar at top left hole, otherwise excellent example. - Sold for £320

Lot 30 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "OKEHAMPTON", (f/f), ex LSWR Exeter-Plymouth Main Line, the station on the edge of Dartmoor was the junction for the Bude & Padstow lines, it closed to passengers on the 5th January 1972. Excellent colour & shine one tiny edge chip matched in at top left & a few minor rim chips. - Sold for £3500

Lot 31 A Webb & Thompson Large Single Line Staff "FRONGOCH - ARENIG", steel with brass rings & cast name plates, tube a little bent, Ex GWR Bala Junction-Blaenau Festiniog Branch, most of the route Closed to Passengers on the 4th January 1960 & Goods thirteen months later, leaving a short branch to Bala for several years & Freight to Trawsfynedd via the connection from the Conway Valley Line. - Sold for £400

Lot 32 A Shedplate "64A", (St Margarets 1949-67), the Scottish Region's biggest shed with an allocation well in excess of 200 locos in its prime, front repainted. - Sold for £100

Lot 33 A Pair of Enamel Traction Engine Registration Plates, (a) "WEST SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL, LOCOMOTIVES ACT 1898, NUMBER OF LICENSE 296, GRANTED JUNE 14TH 1920", circular 8" diameter, black on white, excellent condition, good colour & shine, with just minor edge chips, (b) "COUNTY COUNCIL OF ESSEX, REGISTERED NO 727, LOCOMOTIVES ACT 1898", white on blue, loss of shine, edge chips & wear to face. (2) - Sold for £300

Lot 34 A London Brighton & South Coast Rly Tyers Two Plunger Semaphore Absolute Block Instrument, the left side of the case has a bakelite plunger with a brass plate above "PUSH TO RELEASE COMMUTATOR", below the bottom plunger is a Tyers Makers Plate (Electroplated), excellent condition with both signal arms moving freely. - Sold for £820

Lot 35 A London & South Western Railway Pocket Watch, the back of the case engraved "LSWR, 2560, PASSENGER" in attractive serif lettering (clear but worn from day to day use), movement manufactured by American Waltham Watch Co, Serial no 13145441. - Sold for £210

Lot 36 A Great Central Railway Signal Box Nameboard "EAST LEAKE", ex Nottingham Victoria-Leicester Central section of the London Extension, the station closed on the 5th May 1969, cast letters on wood with beading, 91" x 9 _", black letters probably repainted. - Sold for £250

Lot 37 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "2289" from a GWR 2251 Class 0-6-0 built at Swindon and allocated new to Banbury in January 1936. Its later sheds included Didcot, Machynlleth, Oxford, Shrewsbury, Gloucester, Worcester and finally back to Banbury from where it was withdrawn in May 1964. It was cut up three months later at Cashmores, Great Bridge. The front repainted. - Sold for £850

Lot 38 A Locomotive Worksplate "L.M.S, BUILT CREWE 1930", from a LMS Class 4 "Crab" 2-6-0, LMS No 13161, which was renumbered 2861 in 1934 and became BR No 42861. A long time Wakefield engine, it moved late on to the Scottish Region, first at Hurlford and then Ayr from where it was withdrawn in July 1966. After a period in store at Ayr, it was cut up at Arnott Young, West of Scotland Shipbreaking Co, Troon between February and October 1967. Brass oval, 10_" x 6", a little wasting at right hole but good ex loco condition with "2861" on back. Paperwork from BR(Sc) in 1967 listing this and other plates for sale accompanies this lot. - Sold for £100

Lot 39 A Smokebox Numberplate "48427", from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 built at Swindon in 1944 to Railway Executive Committee order, LMS No 8427, and loaned to the GWR before going to the LMS in 1946-7 where it was allocated to Swansea Victoria. In BR days it had a lengthy spell at Rugby before moving to Bletchley and finally Mold Junction from where it was withdrawn in August 1965. It was cut up three months later at Buttigiegs, Newport. The front repainted. - Sold for £450

Lot 40 An Enamel Sign "CANADIAN PACIFIIC RAILWAY & STEAMSHIP LINES, BOOK TICKETS HERE", double sided, white on blue, 16" x 10", with end bracket, edge chipping & loss affecting top of the "N&P" on the top line, the reverse has face chip affecting the first two letters of "lines", otherwise similar. Good colour but slight loss of shine, a lovely old sign with "Falkirk Iron Co" name at base. - Sold for £80

Lot 43 A Southern Railway Signal Box Block Instrument, showing "Train On Line, Normal & Line Clear" indications in circular aperture with brass surround, Up & Down Line enamel plates & "Up" indicator mounted above case commutator & brass slide below, excellent condition. - Sold for £150

Lot 44 A Smokebox Numberplate "6843", from the GWR 6800 "Grange" Class 4-6-0 "Poulton Grange" built at Swindon and allocated new to Banbury in October 1937. It had moved to Tyseley by the end of its GWR days but later moved to West Wales, at Goodwick and finally Llanelly from where it was withdrawn in February 1964. It was cut up four months later at Cohens, Morriston, Swansea. The actual Grange is five miles east of Cirencester in Gloucestershire. The front repainted, the back lightly cleaned. - Sold for £700

Lot 45 A small Carriage Roof Board "OAKWORTH/BINGLEY", black on cream paintwork, 36" x 5_", original condition with a little wear from normal use, Oakworth was on the Keighley-Oxenhope branch & Bingley to the south on the Main Line, a very old board believed to be of Midland Rly origin. - Sold for £110

Lot 46 A Single Line Key Token "WELLFIELD-HAWTHORN COLLY", (brass), Ex N.E.R Hartlepool-Ryhope (via Castle Eden) Route, finally closed to freight in 1979, original red paintwork. - Sold for £190

Lot 47 A GWR Signal Box Block Gong with ivorine plate "ROCK VEIN NORTH.G.W.", relating to the GWR signal box between Risca and Nine Mile Point on the line from Basseleg Junction. The GWR joined the Rhymney Railway line from Sirhowy at a "head-on" junction at Nine Mile Point. Rectangular wooden case with one side open, tapper at left, with "GWR" stamped above, 10_" x 7" & 10" high. Good ex box condition. - Sold for £290

Lot 48 A GWR Brass Signal Box Shelf Plate "TO ST MELLONS RELIEF LINE", the box was on the South Wales Main Line between Newport & Cardiff, just west of Marshfield, 4_" x 1_", hand cut lettering. - Sold for £210

Lot 50 A Carriage Print "THE RIVER NIDD, KNARESBOROUGH, YORKSHIRE, from a water colour by Jack Merriot, R.I", a view of the castellated viaduct with steam loco approaching, water marks to border in places, image unaffected. - Sold for £110

Lot 51 A Depot Plaque for Crewe Diesel Depot, featuring a leaping cat in silhouette, as fitted to RES locos, overall 17_" x 11", ex Loco condition with bolts & plenty of brake dust on edge & back. - Sold for £600

Lot 52 A Shedplate "1A", (Willesden 1948-65), repainted, - Sold for £90

Lot 53 A Spirit Glass prominently marked "CALEDONIAN RAILWAY LODGE, 354", with thistles, locomotive & Masonic emblem, 3_" high with heavy base. - Sold for £140

Lot 54 An SR WEST COUNTRY CLASS enamel plaque depicting the town coat-of-arms of BUDE and complete with its original brass surround, from the Bulleid Light Pacific No 21C106/ 34006 built at Brighton in July 1945. The engine was originally fitted with the coat-of-arms of Cornwall but this was changed to the town coat-of-arms, one of the few to carry the full coat-of-arms rather than a prominent section of it. It was shedded at Exmouth Junction before moving in April 1951 to Nine Elms where it spent over 13 years before a final late move to Salisbury from where it was withdrawn in March 1967. It was cut up six months later at Cashmores, Newport. "Bude" was one of three of its Class chosen to represent the Southern Region in the 1948 locomotive exchange trials and excelled on the Manchester-Marylebone and Bristol-Taunton-Plymouth routes. The locomotive also had the distinction of hauling the LCGB, Somerset and Dorset Railtour on 5th March 1966, the last weekend of the line, working from Evercreech to Bath and returning to Bournemouth. Enamel excellent, brass polished and back in good, dirty condition with original steel band, overall size 20" x 22_". - Sold for £19000

Lot 55 A GWR Single Line Key Token "DRWS-Y-NANT-LLANUWCHLLYN", with its matching GWR large hinged token carrier. A Section on the Ruabon-Barmouth route, closed on the 18th January 1965. The inscription on metal plate on cast iron key. - Sold for £250

Lot 56 An LNER Carriage Advertising Print "LOWESTOFT, Two Piers, Esplanade Over A Mile Long, New 18 Hole Golf Course, Close To The Norfolk Broads", black & white etching of promenade & pier on left & yachts on the broads to the right, text in central oval panel, the print is in its original frame. - Sold for £200

Lot 57 A Single Line Key Token "ST BLAZEY BRIDGE-GOONBARROW JCN", alloy, Ex GWR Par-Newquay Branch, some original red paint. - Sold for £150

Lot 58 A Great Western Railway Cabside Numberplate "GWR, 704", from ex Llanelly & Mynydd Mawr Railway 0-6-0T built by Manning Wardle in 1920, Works No 1982, and named "Victory". It was one of the most modern engines absorbed by the GWR at the 1922 Grouping when it received its GWR numberplates, originally fitted to the tank sides but later moved to the bunker sides in accordance with normal GWR practice. Although fitted with GWR safety valves and buffers, it remained substantially unaltered until withdrawn at the end of 1943. It was cut up at Caerphilly Works. "Victory" was rather more travelled than most of its L&MM fellow engines, moving to Duffryn Yard in about 1923-5, back home to Llanelly by 1931 and finally to Neath in 1935. A lovely old cabside with the "GWR" initials above number & "VICTORY" stamped in the beading lower centre (see illustration), background of very old paint, possibly original. - Sold for £6000

Lot 59 A locomotive Nameplate "VICTORY", from ex Llanelly & Mynydd Mawr 0-6-0T, GWR No 704. [Please see previous lot for locomotive history], 35_" x 6_" with serif lettering, the background painted black. - Sold for £4000

Lot 60 A BR(S) Quad Royal Poster "THE SOUTH DOWNS" by Jack Merriott. A dramatic scene featuring hills with chalky outcrops and village below. At the base, a small railway map of the area, "Countryside close to the sea, days out or holidays, easy reach of London, frequent electric services". Rolled, with folds, excellent condition other than a little fraying at the very top edge of border. - Sold for £350

Lot 61 A Locomotive Nameplate "PRIDE OF EASTLEIGH", with its matching "Spitfire" miniature depot plaque from a BR Class 47 No 47812 built by Brush, Works No 678, originally numbered D1916 and allocated new to Cardiff Canton in November 1965. It was renumbered as 47657 in October 1986 and 47812 in July 1989. It was named at a private ceremony at Eastleigh Depot in February 2002 as part of the swansong of the Virgin Cross-Country fleet. It was withdrawn in October 2002 but went on hire to Freightliner from May 2003. Good ex Loco condition, plenty of dirt and oxidisation on back of both plates. 58_" x 97/8". Virgin style lettering, Spitfire emblem 17_ " across. - Sold for £2300

Lot 62 A SHEDPLATE "83E", (St Blazey 1949-62, then Yeovil Town 1963-65), ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £400

Lot 63 An original Painting of a GNR 4-2-2 Locomotive No.1007, a side view executed in great detail, even the wording on the worksplate can be read. Attractively mounted and framed, overall size 21_" x 15_". - Sold for £150

Lot 64 A GWR Lamp Glass "FORGE CROSSING", Ex Titley-Presteigne Branch in Herefordshire. Forge Crossing Halt opened on the 9th March 1929 & closed temporarily on the 5th February 1951, it never reopened & was officially closed on the 4th June that year. Rectangular white glass, 10_" x 3", with engraved lettering in black. - Sold for £90

Lot 65 A Shedplate "70G", (Newport Isle of Wight 1955-57, Weymouth 1963-67), repainted. - Sold for £210

Lot 66 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "COBHAM & STOKE D'ABERNON", (h/f), Ex LSWR Guildford-Surbiton route, the suffix being added in 1951, Excellent colour & shine with a few neat repairs in green above & below the first word. Unusual in having 22 letters and an apostrophe all on a single line. - Sold for £440

Lot 67 A WORKSPLATE "LNER 63976 Built Doncaster 1942" from a LNER O2 Class 2-8-0 built at Doncaster in 1942, works No 1944, LNER No 3846 and allocated new to Doncaster. It was renumbered 3976 in 1946 and became BR No 63976. Its later sheds included Mexborough with a final lengthy spell at Retford from where it was withdrawn in September 1963. It was cut up at Doncaster Works the following month, brass oval 9" x 5", front cleaned long ago, paint & dirt still evident on the back. - Sold for £140

Lot 68 A Framed & Glazed Waiting Room Print by Roland Hilder. The 1930s scene features a group of golfers on a tree lined course with large Clubhouse or Hotel below with cars outside, the Downs beyond, 20_" x 23_", oak frame with artists name lower right. - Sold for £130

Lot 69 A Southern Railway Enamel Sign "COBHAM SUBSTATION", 26" x 6" (flangeless), Ex LSWR Surbiton-Guildford route, excellent condition. - Sold for £190

Lot 70 A BR double arrow motif from BR Class 86 electric No E3183/ 86251 built by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry in 1965, Works Nos 3475/ E321, and named "The Birmingham Post" in 1980. The number "86251" is marked on the back. Good ex loco condition, front lightly polished, back untouched, 27_" x 17". - Sold for £170

Lot 71 A Smokebox Numberplate "30028", from a LSWR M7 Class 0-4-4T built at Nine Elms Works in January 1904, LSWR No 28. In BR days it was shedded at Bournemouth, Guildford, Three Bridges and finally Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in September 1962. It was cut up at nearby Eastleigh Works the following month. Repainted & with BR(S) Eastleigh Triangle cast in the back. - Sold for £970

Lot 77 A Highland Railway Platform Lamp, from Perth Station, square steel body, with chimney & conical top, glazed with white glass in top section, although the lamp is of the type fitted to a post, the absence of base fittings suggest it was suspended in a wall mounted cradle. The name "PERTH" appears at the top of one glass panel, in the correct style but not contemporary with the lamp manufacture & probably not with its use on the station. Unrestored with crack to one white glass, overall 29" high. - Sold for £90

Lot 89 A GWR Brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "9024" from the 3200 "Earl" Class 4-4-0, originally No 3224, built at Swindon in February 1939 using the frames of "Bulldog" Class No 3409 "Queensland" and the cab of "Duke" Class No 3290 "Severn", both these elderly locos having been condemned the previous month. The first 20 "Earls" (3200-19) were allotted the names of Earls but these were soon transferred to newly constructed Castles after which the 3200 Class were generally known as "Dukedogs". No 3224 was renumbered with the rest of the Class in 1946 and became 9024. It went new to Shrewsbury and was still there at the end of its GWR days but spent its final years on Cambrian lines until withdrawal from Machynlleth in August 1957. It was cut up at Swindon Works the same month. Black background probably repainted long ago, brass lightly polished. - Sold for £2600

Lot 97 A Smokebox Numberplate "60137", from the Peppercorn A1 Class Pacific "Redgauntlet" built at Darlington in December 1948, Works No 2056 and named in June 1950. It was allocated new to Gateshead where it remained for nearly twelve years before moving late on to Heaton and finally Tweedmouth from where it was withdrawn in October 1962. After a period in store at Blaydon shed, it was cut up at Doncaster Works in May 1963. In common with several other A1s, the engine was named after one of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels. Lot 127 A WORKSPLATE, "SHARP STEWART & Co LTD, ATLAS WORKS, 4616-1900, GLASGOW", from an ex Barry Railway B1 Class 0-6-2T No 114. When the Barry Railway became a constituent of the GWR at the 1922 Grouping its locos were absorbed by the parent company and No 114 was renumbered "GWR 270". It spent most, if not all, of its life at Barry shed employed on excursion traffic to Barry Island as well as short spells of other passenger work followed by mineral work and was withdrawn from there in April 1951. It was one of only three of the B1 Class to receive a BR smokebox numberplate. The number "270" is clearly stamped on the back, front background repainted black, back original condition, a 5/8" diameter hole above the lower rim, probably to clear a rivet on the locomotive. Brass oval, 9_" x 6_", front repainted black. - Sold for £300

Lot 128 A NAMEPLATE "CALCUTTA" from the GWR "Bulldog" Class 4-4-0 built at Swindon in March 1904, originally numbered 3468 but changed to 3406 under a renumbering scheme introduced in 1912. Allocated new to Penzance, it was at Pontypool Road by the end of its GWR days and withdrawn from Hereford in January 1951. The Bulldog Class boasted quite a variety of names and this was one of a group of names celebrating countries, states and cities within the then British Empire, "Calcutta" being the capital city of the Indian State of West Bengal. A lovely old plate in sound condition, possibly repainted long ago. - Sold for £9000

Lot 129 A (GWR) brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "3406" from a 9400 Class 0-6-0PT built by Yorkshire Engine Co in 1956, Works No 2581. It went new to Cardiff East Dock, was withdrawn from Radyr in November 1964 after a working life of only eight years and cut up at Hayes, Bridgend three months later. Note: This plate belongs to the owner of "Calcutta" who had it displayed with the nameplate as the appropriate number if not the matching numberplate, ex loco condition. - Sold for £720

The case is stamped "L&NWRy Tele Dept Stockport", a label inside appears to be dated 1898. A fine example, style different to usual LNWR examples, complete with door key. - Sold for £460

Lot 146 A Harpers One Wire Semaphore Block Instrument, with a pair of semaphore signals on brass post with finial, one red, one white with white dot on home arm rather than stripe, below a circular glazed aperture showing "Train On Line/Train Off But Section Blocked, All Clear", with brass knob to rotate, a plunger below has had its front removed along with its internal fitting, probably to act to an indicator, otherwise Ex Box condition, one label by signal missing the other paper (old original), a fine old example of a scarce instrument. - Sold for £600

Lot 147 A SR WEST COUNTRY CLASS enamel plaque depicting the coat-of-arms of Devon and complete with its original brass surround, from the Bulleid Light Pacific No 21C120/ 34020 "SEATON" built at Brighton in December 1945. It was shedded at Exmouth Junction before transferring to Nine Elms in April 1951, returning in May 1962 to Exmouth Junction from where it was withdrawn in September 1964. It was cut up three months later at Birds, Morriston, Swansea. Note: other Devon coats-of-arms sold in recent years have been original centres but in replica surrounds, the original surrounds being re-used when the engines were fitted with town coats-of-arms. "Seaton" retained its "Devon" badge till the end. Minor blemishes otherwise excellent, overall 20" x 22_". Brass polished, the back in good, dirty condition with original steel band. - Sold for £15500

Lot 148 A North Eastern Railway Wall Lamp for Office or Signal box, comprising reservoir with rounded front, brass burner, glass chimney & wallplate with curved top attached to back. The reservoir front bears an embossed brass oval plate "N.E.R" & is also stamped "N.E.R. Co", excellent condition with the front repainted but lacking filler cap & reflector. - Sold for £75

Lot 149 A Cast Iron Notice "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAYS, SMOKING, Smoking Is Strictly Prohibited Within The Entrance Tunnel, Or Within Any Of The Shops Or Premises Connected With The Locomotive Carriage & Wagon Works, Any Workman Infringing This Regulation Will Be Liable To A Fine Of 2s, By Order, Loco Carr Dept Swindon, May 1st 1896", rectangular 22_" x 13" with all text in serif lettering. The sign was situated at the Subway Entrance to Swindon Works & was removed in 1940 when double twelve hour shift commenced as part of the War Effort, it being felt that staff needed to be allowed to smoke. The sign was stored but not reinstated, being found in a cupboard in 1960 & purchased by the vendor. A unique sign in excellent original condition. - Sold for £4400

Lot 150 A Smokebox Numberplate "6983", from the (GWR) 6959 "Modified Hall" Class 4-6-0 "Otterington Hall" built at Swindon and allocated new to Old Oak Common in February 1948. It later moved to Didcot and finally Oxford from where it was withdrawn in August 1965 and was cut up four months later at Cashmores, Newport. The actual Hall is two miles south of Northallerton in North Yorkshire, a long way from GWR territory. The front repainted, back partially so. - Sold for £620

It was allocated to Dundee and regularly employed on Aberdeen expresses. It moved to Haymarket during the war and remained there for the rest of its working life apart from a brief final spell at Thornton Junction from where it was withdrawn in February 1958. In May 1947 it was sold to the National Coal Board at Littleton Colliery, Staffs, becoming Littleton No 6. It went to Bagnall for repair in 1954 and to Cannock Central Engineering Workshops for repair early in 1958. It was out of use by August 1970 and cut up on site at Littleton two months later. Lot 181 A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE "8728" from a GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built by WG Bagnall, Works No 2425, and allocated new to Old Oak Common in January 1931. Its later sheds included a long spell at Cardiff Canton and a final move to the Southern Region at Nine Elms where it was employed on empty stock duties in and out of Waterloo. It was withdrawn from Nine Elms in July 1963 and then stored there before being cut up at Birds, Risca in March 1964. Repainted long ago. - Sold for £500

The N.L.L.R. ran from Scunthorpe northwards to Winteringham Haven on the shores of the River Humber (opposite Brough) & on westwards to Whitton, it opened progressively between 1906 & 1910, utilizing the recent Light Railway Act, Passenger services ceased in 1925 & the line cut back gradually in 1951 & 1961, after which the remaining section as far as Winterton passed into the hands of the British Steel Corporation. - Sold for £400

Lot 186 A Locomotive Nameplate "GAZELLE", from the LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 built at Darlington in 1943, Works No 1920, originally LNER No 8304. It was renumbered 1003 in 1946, becoming BR No 61003. Allocated new to the Great Eastern Section of the LNER, it spent many years at Parkeston, before moving to March, Doncaster, Immingham and finally Colwick from where it was withdrawn in December 1965. It was cut up at Garnham Harris & Elton, Chesterfield two months later. One of 40 B1s named after species of antelope and certainly one of the finest names, the gazelle is a small, graceful, soft-eyed antelope found in Africa and Asia, 42_" x 6_". The Halt Opened in 1908 & Closed on the 17th September 1956. - Sold for £140

Lot 193 A Smokebox Numberplate "6005", from GWR 6000 "King" Class 4-6-0 "King George ll" built at Swindon and allocated new to Old Oak Common in July 1927. By the end of its GWR days it had moved to Stafford Road where it spent the rest of its days apart from a final move back to Old Oak from where it was withdrawn in December 1962. It was cut up three months later at Cashmores, Great Bridge. A rare chance to acquire a numberplate from the premier GWR class, especially one with a "00" number. The front repainted, back lightly cleaned.

Lot 214 A Set of GWR enamelled letters "FROME STATION", each with 2" wide lettering & 2" deep with cream face, brown sides & flush brackets at rear to fit to building. The overall height of each is 12" with widths varying (the "F" is 6 3/8" wide). The Somerset station is on the West of England Main Line (with cut off provided) & Junction for Radstock, it retains its Wooden overall roof & original building, to the front of which these letters were fixed, some face chips but a surprising survivor. - Sold for £100

Lot 216 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 7469, REBUILT, STRATFORD WORKS 1909", from a GER T26 Class / LNER E4 Class 2-4-0 built at Stratford in 1892, GER No 469. It was reboilered in 1909 which the GER classed as "rebuilding", hence the wording on this plate. It was renumbered 7469 by the LNER in 1924 and withdrawn in June 1929, so it is somewhat remarkable that several of the Class survived until the mid 1950s. Brass oval 9" x 5", ex loco condition. - Sold for £320

Lot 220 A Locomotive Nameplate "CARNEDD DAFYDD", from the BR Class 60 No 60009 built by Brush, Works No 911, in January 1990 and named the following month after the Mountain near Bethesda, the nameplates "Bow Fell" having first been fitted in error at the Brush works. It was allocated to Stewarts Lane but not until February 1993, having first been used as a training loco at Didcot, Manchester and Bescot. The nameplates were removed in 1997 and the plate comes with its official sale document. 59" x 97/8", ex loco condition with a good crusty back and plenty of dirt and oxidisation.

On returning to the UK it was placed in store and purchased by BR in 1949. It entered BR service in 1950 as No 90372 at Farnley Junction, later moving to Agecroft and finally Doncaster from where it was withdrawn in December 1965. Lot 239 A Nameplate "TAFF MERTHYR", from a 0-6-0ST built by Hudswell Clark in 1923, Works No 1498 & which went new to Taff Merthyr Steam Coal Co Ltd at Taff Merthyr Colliery, Treharris, where it remained until cut up in about January 1968. The Colliery & engine were taken over by The National Coal Board on 1st January 1947 under Area 4 (Aberdare) of its No 7 Division. Cast brass with serif letters, Ex loco condition, original red paintwork & black border, 41" x 6_", the plate is accompanied by a photo of the loco & two photos of the Colliery after which it was named. Lot 242 A Barry Railway & Dock Co, Royal Coat of Arms, cast iron shield featuring lion & unicorn. This fine example was recovered from Caerphilly Works by Eric Mountford, who was an employee there & wrote the Standard Reference Book on the Works. The coat of arms was produced by the Barry Railway for the Visit of H.R.H. The Prince Of Wales when he opened the docks in 1904 and graced the front of the famous dock building, 17_" x 20" overall, the front repainted in the traditional colours. - Sold for £1000

It was renumbered 9782 in 1946, becoming BR No 69782. Its later sheds were Hull (Dairycoates), Tyne Dock and Hull (Springhead) from where it was withdrawn in December 1957. Lot 256 A Smokebox Numberplate "42779", from a LMS Class 4 2-6-0 "Crab" built at Crewe in 1927, LMS No 13079, renumbered 2779 in 1934. A long time Bescot engine, it later moved to Aston, Birkenhead, Crewe North, Stockport and finally Lancaster (Green Ayre) from where it was withdrawn in May 1962. It was cut up at Horwich Works the same month. Repainted long ago, with vertical weld between the 4 & the 2, visible on the back only. - Sold for £350

Lot 264 A Smokebox Numberplate "63868", from a 2-8-0 built for the Ministry of Munitions to Robinson's GCR design by North British Locomotive Co in 1919, Works No 22172, ROD No 2081, and loaned to the Caledonian Railway. It was returned to the ROD in 1921 and placed in store at Gretna. In 1927 it was purchased by the LNER, becoming Class O4/3 No 6625. It was rebuilt to an O1 in 1945 and renumbered 3868 in 1946, becoming BR 63868. Its later sheds were Gorton, Annesley (where it worked the famous fast freights nicknamed "runners" or "windcutters" to Woodford Halse until displaced by the BR 2-10-0s in 1957), March, Staveley GC and finally Langwith Junction from where it was withdrawn in July 1965. It was cut up at Drapers, Hull four months later. Front repainted, back partially cleaned. - Sold for £580

Lot 269 A Locomotive Nameplate "HENRY BESSEMER", from the LNWR Experiment Class 4-6-0, LNWR No 1014, incorporating its building date "Crewe Works Sepr 1907". Under the LMS it was numbered 5489 and withdrawn in May 1928. Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-1898) was the inventor of the "Bessemer process" of steel manufacture using a blast furnace and one of his plants was installed at Crewe Works. A fine example of a straight LNWR nameplate, 56" long, much harder to find than the curved plates. The face polished and back in original condition.

Lot 279 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "BONNYBRIDGE HIGH", (h/f), Ex NBR Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow Queen St Main Line, situated just west of Falkirk, the "High" suffix was added on the 8th June 1953 & dropped on the 14th June 1965, although the other stations in the Town closed to passengers in the 1930s, Goods traffic was still handled at Bonnybridge & Bonnybridge Ctl, the suffix being adopted to avoid confusion with the then Goods Stations. "High" closed on 6th March 1967. Good colour, loss of shine with surface mottled, three face chip repairs well matched, two by the "Y&R" only just touching letter. A rare example, never before offered for sale & with suffix in lower panel. - Sold for £620

After periods in store at Swindon Works and Barry Docks, it became one of the unlucky ones to be cut up at Woodhams, Barry in June 1962. Ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £440

Lot 288 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "HEST BANK", (f/f), wall fixing, Ex LNWR West Coast main Line between Lancaster Castle & Carnforth. The Station Closed on 3rd February 1969 & was situated on the shores of Morecambe Bay, the only point between London & Glasgow with a sea view. Excellent colour & shine, chip around lower right screwhole. - Sold for £2800

Lot 289 A Locomotive Headboard, "THE CALEDONIAN", with its large twin flags above featuring the crosses of Saint George and Saint Andrew, cast aluminium with its original fixing bracket, as carried by the Stanier "Princess Coronations". The train was introduced by BR in 1957 to revive a high speed service between Euston and Glasgow resembling the pre-war Coronation Scot. It left both London and Glasgow at 1.30 p.m. stopping only at Carlisle. The inaugural train from Glasgow was hauled by 46244 "King George Vl" which achieved a time of only 119 minutes for the final 158 miles from Crewe to Euston. Overall 58_" x 24_", red, blue, cream and black paintwork and "CAMDEN, 1B" just visible on back. - Sold for £4000

Lot 290 A Locomotive Nameplate "TREMORFA STEELWORKS", and its badge, an interesting set carried by locos of two different classes, first by Class 37 No 37711 from 1988 to 1993 and then by Class 56 No 56073 from 1993 until 1997. No 37711 started life as D6785 built by English Electric and Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns in December 1962, Works Nos 3212 and 8331, and was renumbered 37085 in 1974 and 37711 in 1988. No 56073 was built by BREL Doncaster in 1980 and was placed in store at Immingham in 2002. Ex loco condition with plenty of dirt and oxidisation on the back. The nameplate measures 73" x 10", the badge 14_" x 8_". The set is sold with the official sales document from the railway.

By the end of its GWR days it was at Merthyr but it moved back to Cathays, then to Treherbert and finally Radyr from where it was withdrawn in December 1963. It was cut up at Birds, Risca between March and July 1964, repainted, - Sold for £440

Lot 293 A Diesel Locomotive Flamecut Cabside Numberpanel "50 040", with large style numbers from the BR Class 50 built by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry, Works Nos 3810 and D1181, in October 1968. It was originally numbered D440 and named "Leviathan" from 1978 to 1987 and "Centurian" from 1987 onwards. It was withdrawn in August 1990 and was at one time destined for preservation but eventually finished up at Coventry Rail Centre at Baginton Airport. 73" x 22", neatly cut out, in good ex loco condition with some graffiti on one of the numbers.

It was first shedded at Wakefield before moving to Bolton from where it was withdrawn in April 1963. It was cut up at nearby Horwich Works the following month. Ex loco condition. This is a Weighting Tablet (one in each machine) provided as the tablets for this section were brass on alloy, prominent hand engraved letters. - Sold for £310

Lot 325 An Irish Carriage Board "SLAINJE", 33" x 5", cast alloy with Gaelic lettering, designed to fit over the carriage door on early C.I.E Stock. The word "Slainje" translates as "Good Health". Repainted red over old paint. - Sold for £220

Lot 326 A Locomotive Nameplate "GROTRIAN HALL", from the GWR 4900 "Hall" Class 4-6-0 No 5926 built at Swindon and allocated new to Old Oak Common in June 1933. It had moved to St Blazey by the end of its GWR days, one of only two named engines at that shed, and remained there until 1957 when it transferred to Stafford Road and later to Tyseley and Banbury from where it was withdrawn in September 1962. After over a year in store at Banbury shed, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in December 1963. The actual Hall was in Wigmore Street in central London but has been demolished. The plate in superb ex loco condition, untouched and unpolished since removal, with delivery details from Swindon still chalked on the back. - Sold for £6900

Lot 339 A GWR Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "GWR, 66", from a Rhymney Railway A1 Class 0-6-2T designed by Hurry Riches and built by Hudswell Clarke in 1916, Works No 1119, Rhymney No 26, one of a Class of eight freight tanks. It was re-numbered "66" after the Rhymney was absorbed by the GWR in 1922 and at the time was shedded at Senghenydd but later it had spells away from Rhymney territory at Newport Pill, Barry, Cardiff Canton and Cardiff East Dock. It was withdrawn in July 1955 and cut up at Swindon Works shortly afterwards. Some original paint in evidence & the back probably repainted long ago. The lower rim stamped with Boiler details & the original loco No "R26". - Sold for £3900

A successful design built for heavy freight with long service lives and subsequent use in industry. A number survive preserved. Circular brass 77/8", front repainted red & letters polished, back untouched, plate slightly out of true & nick in border by the "N" of North, due to the plate being moved from the side of the smokebox to the running plate. - Sold for £160

It was allocated new to Nine Elms where it spent most of its working life, with brief stays at Reading, Eastleigh and Guildford from where it was withdrawn in March 1967. Lot 389 A Wooden Smokebox Numberplate "9", a painted wooden plate from the ex Vale of Rheidol Light Railway 2-6-2T built by Davies & Metcalfe of Manchester in 1902, V of R No 2 named "Prince of Wales". The V of R amalgamed in 1913 with the Cambrian Railway which in turn amalgamated with the GWR in 1922. The loco was renumbered 1213 by the GWR and 9 by BR in 1949 and in 1956 it reverted to its original name "Prince of Wales", having been de-named by the Cambrian. We are not sure at which stage of its BR career this plate was fitted but it is in ex loco condition and is well photographed being carried on the engine. 20" x 55/8". - Sold for £50

Lot 404 An Original Oil Painting "GLENFINNAN STATION" by George Heiron depicting a busy scene at Glenfinnan station in LNER days. An un-named Class K2 2-6-0 takes water at the end of the station platform while emitting plumes of smoke and steam and a porter unloads packages from the brake van. Approaching from the opposite direction an unidentified but named K2 piloting an ex NBR "Glen" on a southbound passenger train. A highly evocative scene with a typical West Highland mountain backdrop. Mounted in a good quality gilt frame, 35" x 45" overall, and ready to hang. - Sold for £1050

Lot 418 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED CALEDONIA WORKS, No 1081, 1909, KILMARNOCK", from a 0-4-0ST which went ex works in July 1909 to John Players Sons Ltd, Tinplate Works, Clydach on Tawe near Swansea and was named "Leaf". The Works produced the raw materials for the manufacture of tobacco tins. In 1964 the company changed its name to John Player & Sons (1964) Ltd, and the site was renamed Clydach Foundry & Tinplate Works. In March 1984 the loco went to Kidwelly Industrial Museum for preservation. 16_" x 11_", unrestored other than lettering lightly polished, distortion around lower right fixing hole, no damage. The plate was acquired by the vendor many years before the withdrawal of the loco. Tins for tobacco and fags. - Sold for £420

Lot 492 A Tenderplate "BR5, 1, 1943", from the 5000 gallon tender attached to a War Department "Austerity" 2-8-0 built by North British Locomotive Co in 1943, Works No 24980, WD No 77009. It went new on loan to the LNER, returning to the WD in January 1945. In July 1946 it was again loaned to the LNER, becoming Class O7 No 3000 in March 1947. It became BR No 63000 in June 1948 and was formally purchased by BR the following December. In October 1950 it was renumbered 90000, in effect the class leader. It was withdrawn from Frodingham in June 1965 and cut up at Cox & Danks, Wadsley Bridge. Rectangular 8" x 5_", rounded corners, front unpainted other than the characters, back dirty ex loco condition. - Sold for £220

Lot 493 A Locomotive Worksplate "SIR W.G. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH & Co (ENGINEERS) LTD, No 1285, 1939, SCOTSWOOD WORKS, NEWCASTLE-On-TYNE", from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0 No (4)5230. It was shedded at Carlisle Upperby at the end of its LMS days and later moved to Carnforth from where it was withdrawn in August 1965. It was cut up three months later at Birds, Bridgend, brass rectangle, 8_" x 5", front lightly cleaned, corners intact though hairline opening to top two. - Sold for £95
