Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 22 April 2006
| Lot 54 |
An SR WEST COUNTRY CLASS enamel plaque depicting the town coat-of-arms of BUDE and complete with its original brass surround, from the Bulleid Light Pacific No 21C106/ 34006 built at Brighton in July 1945. The engine was originally fitted with the coat-of-arms of Cornwall but this was changed to the town coat-of-arms, one of the few to carry the full coat-of-arms rather than a prominent section of it. It was shedded at Exmouth Junction before moving in April 1951 to Nine Elms where it spent over 13 years before a final late move to Salisbury from where it was withdrawn in March 1967. It was cut up six months later at Cashmores, Newport. "Bude" was one of three of its Class chosen to represent the Southern Region in the 1948 locomotive exchange trials and excelled on the Manchester-Marylebone and Bristol-Taunton-Plymouth routes. The locomotive also had the distinction of hauling the LCGB, Somerset and Dorset Railtour on 5th March 1966, the last weekend of the line, working from Evercreech to Bath and returning to Bournemouth. Enamel excellent, brass polished and back in good, dirty condition with original steel band, overall size 20" x 22_".
