Cast aluminium 18"x18", in fine ex loco condition with "electric blue" paint in evidence. - Sold for £680 Lot 30 A GWR Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "5", from an ex Weston Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway 0-6-0T which started life as a London Brighton & South Coast Railway "Terrier" built by William Stroudley at Brighton Works in 1877, their No 43 named "Gypsy Hill". It was renumbered 643 in 1902 and became SR B643 (B=Brighton). It was sold to the WCPLR, an independent Light Railway managed with other similar lines by the famous Colonel HF Stephens, in either December 1925 or January 1926, becoming their No 2 and named "PORTISHEAD", a name it retained for the remainder of its life. As it weighed only 28 tons, it was ideally suited to the Light Railway. It was one of two ex Terriers acquired, the other becoming GWR No 6. In 1940 the WCPLR went into liquidation and the GWR as its largest creditor took over most of its assets including its locos. As No 5 the GWR sent it to St Philips Marsh where it was used on the Bristol Harbour lines and other light duties. In December 1948 it was transferred to Taunton and in January 1950 to Newton Abbot where it acted as shed pilot for a month or two before being placed in the Stock Shed at Swindon Works; there it remained for four years, emerging only to be condemned in March 1954 after a life of 77 years. The lowest numbered cabside we have auctioned (and are likely to) and undoubtedly one of the most interesting. The plate is of the usual pattern though 13_" wide, the front was repainted when it was acquired, the back is totally untouched. - Sold for £6600 Lot 31 A Southern Railway enamel sign "INCLUDING 1ST AND 2ND CLASS PULLMAN CARS", as used on train departure boards, 17_"x3_" white on blue with curved portion at top. It was named "The Glasgow Herald" on 20 September 1980 at Glasgow Central station by the newspaper editor. The name was removed in 1998 after the engine transferred from the West Coast Main Line to East Anglia where it was renamed "Sheppard 100" at Norwich Crown Point on 11 February 2003. Cast aluminium 8_"x6_", ex loco condition with multiple coats of "rail blue" paint. - Sold for £350 Lot 35 A Smokebox Numberplate "62679", from the LNER D11/2 Class 4-4-0 "LORD GLENALLAN" built by Kitson & Co, Works No 5387, in October 1924, LNER No 6386, renumbered 2679 in 1946. It was allocated new to Dundee and moved during the Second World War to Haymarket where it remained until 1957 until moving briefly to Thornton Junction from where it was withdrawn in September 1958. After a period in store at Kilmarnock Works, it is recorded as being cut up either there or at Inverurie Works in September 1959 although almost certainly this was Inverurie as both hand painted nameplates are known to have survived and most were saved there. The Class D11/2s were a continuation of the earlier Great Central Class many of which were named after that Company's Directors and were accordingly often referred to as Scottish Directors, although Lord Glenallan and the other names were taken from characters in Sir Walter Scott's novels. This is the first D11/2 smokebox numberplate to appear in auction. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £1600 Lot 36 A Single Line Key Token "WITHAM-CRANMORE", (steel/engraved brass plate).
