Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 20 January 2007

Lot 35 A Smokebox Numberplate "62679", from the LNER D11/2 Class 4-4-0 "LORD GLENALLAN" built by Kitson & Co, Works No 5387, in October 1924, LNER No 6386, renumbered 2679 in 1946. It was allocated new to Dundee and moved during the Second World War to Haymarket where it remained until 1957 until moving briefly to Thornton Junction from where it was withdrawn in September 1958. After a period in store at Kilmarnock Works, it is recorded as being cut up either there or at Inverurie Works in September 1959 although almost certainly this was Inverurie as both hand painted nameplates are known to have survived and most were saved there. The Class D11/2s were a continuation of the earlier Great Central Class many of which were named after that Company's Directors and were accordingly often referred to as Scottish Directors, although Lord Glenallan and the other names were taken from characters in Sir Walter Scott's novels. This is the first D11/2 smokebox numberplate to appear in auction. The plate has been repainted.
 This lot sold for £1600
