Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 20 January 2007

Lot 69 A LOCOMOTIVE PLAQUE as carried on the cabsides of the SR Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 "TANGMERE" underneath its BR number "34067". The plaque, one of a pair presented by the Sergeants' Mess at Tangmere, displays the badge of the RAF station comprising its full title, emblem and motto in the style of the Battle of Britain "Squadron" badges but in a shield shaped surround more akin to the "West Country" badges. Tangmere was built by the SR at Brighton in September 1947 as 21C167 and was allocated new to Exmouth Junction (but at first on loan to Salisbury), although it spent most of its working life at Stewarts Lane before returning to the Western Section at Salisbury from where it was withdrawn in November 1963. After almost a year in store at Eastleigh shed, it was moved to Barry Docks for scrap in March 1965 but fortunately was rescued for preservation in January 1981. Superb ex loco condition, overall 12"x14".
 This lot sold for £13200
