Lot 1 A BR(W) chocolate and cream Totem Sign "STONEHOUSE (BURDETT ROAD)", (f/f), the station is between Standish Junction and Stroud on the GWR Gloucester to Swindon Main Line. The BR suffix was used from the 17th of September 1951 until the 6th of May 1968 and is of course unique to the station. It is shown in the lower panel within brackets. Good colour and shine, four tiny chips matched in, the odd blemish and usual edge chips. The station had four totems, none of which have been offered at auction before. - Sold for £1750

Lot 2 A Great Western Railway brass Signal Box shelf plate "FROM KINGSUTTON". The signal Box was situated South of Banbury and was junction for the route to Chipping Norton and Cheltenham. - Sold for £240

Lot 3 A Shedplate "83A", (Newton Abbot, 1949-1963), cast iron, in ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £260

Lot 4 A Cast Iron Sign "BARRY DOCK AND RAILWAYS, TRESPASS NOTICE", referring to Dock Property, Railways and Stations, 23_"x22", unrestored, though little paint on the face.

Lot 5 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED, CALEDONIA WORKS No 828, 1898, KILMARNOCK", from a 0-6-0ST new to Fife Coal Co Ltd at Bowhill Colliery, Cardenden, which became part of the NCB, Area 1, in January 1947. The engine moved to Aitken Colliery, Kelty in about 1950 and two years later to Central Workshops, Cowdenbeath. It was scrapped in August 1953. Cast brass oval, 16_"x11_", the front polished and repainted black, the back untouched with "Loco 27" visible in very old paint, dating from the time the plate was fitted. - Sold for £420

Lot 6 A Set of Great Western Railway Plans "G.W.R. BRIDPORT BRANCH SURVEY 1897, General Managers Copy", gilt title on brown leather boards (repeated on front of leather/board slipcase). The plans one to a scale of 1_" =1 chain, hand coloured and show the complete track layout of the branch, every building, bridge and crossing etc. Notes on the acquisition of land to build the line are included, disposals before and after closure (the latest being 1986) are indicated by neat hatching with names of buyers. The plans are linen backed and designed to open in book form, superb quality and in excellent condition. - Sold for £560

Lot 7 A Carriage Print "THE CINQUE PORT OF NEW ROMNEY, KENT, from a watercolour by Jack Merriott, R.I.", a peaceful scene of the main street looking towards the church. - Sold for £90

Lot 8 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "TIPTON ST JOHN-BUDLEIGH SALTERTON", (brass/steel), from the LSWR Sidmouth Junction-Exmouth Branch in East Devon, a picturesque section following the valley of the River Otter, the line closed on the 6th of March 1967. - Sold for £660

Lot 9 A BR(M) maroon enamel station direction sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, RUGBY CENTRAL STATION", (f/f) with company name in totem logo at top and right hand arrow at base, the sign indicated the route to one of the principal stations on the Great Central's London extension. The route South closed on the 5th of September 1966 after which he station became the terminus for the local service from Nottingham. Final closure was on the 5th of May 1969. 28"x13", excellent colour and shine with a couple of marks at edge and a few edge chips on the flange. - Sold for £2400

Lot 10 A Great Northern Railway Brass Seal "GNR, GOODS DEPARTMENT, KINGS CROSS", oval head, 1"x5/8" with ebonised wood handle. - Sold for £170

Lot 11 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1959, No 27883", from BR Class 22 D6310 which went new to Westbury in January 1960 and was withdrawn from Bristol Bath Road in March 1971. It was cut up at BREL Swindon in May 1972. Cast brass diamond, 13_"x5_", the front cleaned and polished. This plate is from an early member of the class and has the traditional pointed ends, later locos carried plates which were slightly rounded. - Sold for £520

Lot 12 A Shedplate "82A", (Bristol Bath Road, 1949-1960), cast iron, the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £290

Lot 13 An early C.I.E. Carriage Board "BAILE ATA CLIAT-CORCAIG", (Dublin-Cork), cast aluminium, 45_"x5", with original red paintwork, the lettering in Gaelic script. - Sold for £360

Lot 14 A BR(S) dark green Totem sign "HELLINGLY", (f/f), from the LB&SCR Redgate Mill Junction (Eridge) to Polegate route. The station closed on the 14th of June 1965, with freight continuing on the southern end of the line to Heathfield until the 5th of August 1968. Excellent colour and shine, a couple of chips on the white edge near right upper and lower bolt holes. - Sold for £3600

Lot 15 A Brass Cabside Numberplate "SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS, E15, 1E", from a 3'6" gauge Class 1E electric, one of a batch of 78 locos built by Metropolitan Vickers & Co, Manchester, in 1924/5 for the first main line electrification in South Africa between Pietermaritzburg and Glencoe. Most were withdrawn in the 1970s. Cast brass oval, 20_"x14_", the front repainted red, with black outer ring. - Sold for £150

Lot 16 A Smokebox Numberplate "73123", from a BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 built at Doncaster and allocated new in February 1956 to Corkerhill where it spent the whole of its working life until being withdrawn in May 1965 and cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw two months later. The front repainted long ago. - Sold for £460

Lot 17 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "DELABOLE-PORT ISAAC ROAD", (brass/steel), from the LSWR North Cornwall Line from Okehampton to Padstow, this section bringing passengers close to the Atlantic coast for the first time. The tablet is stamped "Not In Use" as was the custom at the Exeter Central S&T Depot, when sold during the 1960s. - Sold for £400

Lot 18 A BR(M) maroon Enamel Sign "DUNSTABLE TOWN STATION, ENTRANCE FOR VEHICLES, STATION ROAD", (f/f) with totem at top and right handed arrow, from the Great Northern Railway's Welwyn-Luton-Dunstable branch. The station closed on the 26th of April 1965, with freight continuing until 1989, 36"x18". Excellent colour and shine with a couple of minor marks and small edge chips. Four photographs of the station accompany this lot. - Sold for £1800

Lot 19 A Great Western Railway large brass cased Distant Signal Repeater, with pivoting yellow arm, 5 _" diameter with brass "Thompson" makers plate on the side. The glass and backplate are sealed, indicating that the instrument was used in conjunction with a fogging machine. - Sold for £90

Lot 20 An LNER Cast Iron Seat Back Plate "BOTANIC GARDENS". The station was on the North Eastern Railway's Hull to Hornsea and Withensea route adjacent to Botanic Gardens Engine Shed. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 19th of October 1964, with freight lasting another eleven months. The plate is 47" long with a virtually invisible repair at the right end beyond the lettering, unrestored though little paint on the front, the rim and back have crusty green paint in places. - Sold for £730

Lot 21 A GNR Three Aspect Handlamp, with brass plate "GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY COMPANY, MOLESWOOD, 5", the body is stamped "GNR 4264" the top "GNR 4260" (it was obviously swapped with another lamp at Molewood). The lamp is complete with its fixed vessel, screw-in filler cap, burner and reflector. It has a copper cone, double piecrust top and glasses, including the early green variety. Molewood Signal Box was situated on the Hertford North to Stevenage route, close to the tunnel of the same name. - Sold for £70

Lot 22 A Bulleid Pacific Brass Locomotive Headlamp, complete with bulb, switch, original wiring, side trunking and base bracket, overall 7"x5", in ex loco condition. It was removed from the Battle of Britain Class Loco No 34060 "25 Squadron". - Sold for £160

Lot 23 A Hull & Barnsley Railway Boundary Post "H & B.Ry", cast iron, 35" high with rounded top, rib at back and square foot. A scarce example from a small Yorkshire company which was absorbed by the North Eastern Railway prior to the 1923 grouping. - Sold for £800

Lot 24 A Cast Iron Sign "GREAT WEST'N & GREAT CENT'L JOINT RYS, NOTICE, BY 8 VIC. CAP.20.5.75, ANY PERSON NOT FASTENING THIS GATE AFTER HAVING PASSED THROUGH IS LIABLE TO A PENALTY OF FORTY SHILLINGS", the sign is of GWR pattern and was used on the Ashendon Junction-Northolt route, 29_"x10_", the front repainted. - Sold for £270

Lot 25 A Shedplate "86C", (Cardiff Canton, 1949-1960, Hereford, 1960-1964), probably repainted long ago. - Sold for £170

Lot 26 A North Eastern Railway Enamel Doorplate "PRIVATE", reddish brown lettering and thick border on cream, immaculate condition. - Sold for £100

Lot 27 A BR(M) double royal Poster "CLOSING OF HELMDON VILLAGE AND WAPPENHAM STATIONS, On & From 2nd July 1951, The Passenger Train Service Between BLISWORTH & BANBURY WILL BE WITHDRAWN" etc, with alternative arrangements for passengers and goods traffic, folded with notes on the back recording loco and coach numbers on the last train in each direction and the autographs of the Driver, Fireman and Guard. - Sold for £140

Lot 28 A GWR Signal Box Nameboard "WHITEBALL SIDING SIGNAL BOX", cast iron, 90" long, original paintwork. A famous Devon location on the West of England Main Line, the box was situated at the south end of Whiteball Tunnel between Wellington and Tiverton Junction. It was from the summit near the box that "City of Truro" commenced the record breaking part of her famous journey in 1904. - Sold for £1600

Lot 29 A Great Western Railway 12" dial Trunk Clock, with fusee movement, pendulum and key, an ivorine plate on the left side of the case "GWR 1329" and company initials on the face. The clock in completely original condition and working order, it was used at Kings Sutton, south of Banbury ,and is accompanied by a B.R. receipt dated 1966. - Sold for £3400

Lot 30 A Locomotive Worksplate "BEYER PEACOCK (HYMEK) LTD, SERIAL No 7968, MANCHESTER, 1962, DIESEL ENGINE BRISTOL SIDDELEY, COVENTRY, TRANSNISSION, J STONE & Co DEPTFORD", from BR Class 35 "Hymek" D7064 which entered traffic at Cardiff Canton in January 1963 and was withdrawn from there in October 1971. It was cut up at BREL Swindon in December 1972. Rectangular aluminium, 12_"x5", the front background repainted black, the back untouched. - Sold for £210

Lot 31 A Bulleid Pacific Cabside Number Panel "34017", with "7PSFA" power classification above and triangle below, from the SR "West Country" Class 4-6-2 No 21C117 "ILFRACOMBE" which emerged from Brighton Works in December 1945 and was to be one the earliest rebuilds at Eastleigh in November 1957. Early on it was allocated to Ramsgate although soon transferred to Stewarts Lane with three others of the Class specifically for working the "Golden Arrow", just re-introduced after the war. A policy was then introduced of moving the West Countries away from the Eastern Section, so 34017 was transferred to Exmouth Junction, returning to Stewarts Lane in 1954 and later moving to Bricklayers Arms, Ramsgate, Nine Elms, Eastleigh and finally back to Nine Elms from where it was withdrawn in October 1966. After nearly a year in store at Nine Elms, it was cut up between October 1967 and February 1968 at Buttigiegs, Newport from where this cabside was rescued. 44"x24_" in totally ex loco condition. - Sold for £2000

Lot 32 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "CROWLE TOWN-EPWORTH", (brass/steel) from the Axholme Joint Railway (NER & LYR Joint) which ran from Marshland Junction, (south of Goole) to Haxey on the GN & GE Joint Doncaster to Gainsborough route. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 17th of July 1933, though Freight Traffic continued until the 5th of April 1965 - Sold for £420

Lot 33 A Carriage print "LOWESTOFT, SUFFOLK, from a watercolour by E.T.Holding, R.W.S.", a fine view of the docks and waterfront with an array of vessels tied up. - Sold for £80

Lot 34 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "NUNEATON", (f/f), from the LNWR's Trent Valley Station on the West Coast Main Line, excellent colour and shine though a neat crease repair between the "U" & the "N" and a chip repair far right edge. - Sold for £360

Lot 35 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "GWR, 2186", from an ex Brecon & Merthyr Railway 0-6-0ST built by J Fowler in January 1886, Works No 5057, B&M No 14. When the B&M and its engines were absorbed by the GWR on 1st of July 1922, it received its GWR numberplates and was allocated to the main B&M shed at Bessaleg until this closed in 1929. It was withdrawn in December 1934 and was one of six ex B&M locos placed on a sales list by the GWR but was the only one to find a purchaser, the other five being cut up at Swindon. No 2186 was sold to R Frazer & Sons Ltd, Hebburn, Co Durham in June 1936 and they resold it a month later to Hazelrigg & Burradon Coal Co Ltd, Newcastle-on-Tyne. When scrapped in 1944 it still carried its GWR numberplates and this one was acquired by a local enthusiast. The first cabside from an ex B&M engine to appear in auction, it is clearly stamped "B&M 14" on the lower beading (the locomotive's original number). The front repainted long ago. - Sold for £3000

Lot 36 A Train Waiting Indicator, wooden case with window, behind which is an ivorine plate with three horizontal slots with red edges, another ivorine plate (red on white) moves vertically to indicate "Train Waiting At", with a plate on the case reading "Up Home Signal". Overall 6"x6"x6" with back box housing six terminals, this unusual instrument is believed to be of MR/LSWR origin. - Sold for £260

Lot 37 A Shedplate "64 F", (Bathgate, 1949-1966), the front repainted, the back also, over old dirt and rust. - Sold for £55

Lot 38 An Enamel Armband "L.B.S.C, LOOK OUT", the usual face marks and minor edge chips, but a good example with the straps present but no buckle. One of the scarcer examples from the larger companies. - Sold for £80

Lot 39 A Diesel Locomotive Nameplate "GREAT EASTERN", from the BR Class 47 D1764/ 47169/47581 built by Brush, Works No 526, and allocated new to Tinsley in September 1964. After the engine moved to Stratford, it was named, appropriately, at Liverpool Street station on 7th of March 1979 by Sir Kenneth Cork, Lord Mayor of London. The nameplates were removed in August 1990 and were then fitted to Class 37 37216 at Stratford Depot on 6th of March 1992, again being removed in May 1998 after the engine moved away from the Great Eastern section to Toton. Cast aluminium 51_" long in ex loco condition, original red paintwork and plenty of corrosion on the back. - Sold for £2500

Lot 40 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 69774, DARLINGTON WORKS 1910", from a North Eastern Railway Class Y, LNER A7 Class, 4-6-2T built at Darlington in December 1910 and designed for short-haul work from the collieries to the ports. It was NER/ early LNER No 1136, was renumbered 9774 in 1946, becoming BR 69774. In its early days it was allocated to Thirsk and then Malton, later moving to Springhead from where it was withdrawn in August 1954. Cast iron oval, 9"x5", the front repainted. - Sold for £460

Lot 41 A GWR 78 r.p.m. Gramophone Record by Parlophone "CWM RHONNDA and VICTORY, BY THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, SWINDON STAFF GLEEMAN, R852 (E3699)", on labels, the sleeve is printed with adverts for the retailer "KERSLAKES, MELODY HOUSE, Regent St & Cricklade Rd, Swindon", with illustrations of gramophones, good condition. - Sold for £35

Lot 42 A Framed Norman Wilkinson view of a two funnel steamship at sea, painted in 1905, linen backed and glazed, two small areas of damage in sky, overall 58"x30_", produced for and displayed by the London & North Western Railway. - Sold for £100

Lot 43 A Great Western Railway Pre-Grouping Doorplate "LADIES ROOM", cast iron, 19_"x5" with moulded border, original cream on red paintwork. - Sold for £140

Lot 44 A Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway Pre-Grouping Guards Cap, in black cloth with the initials "MSJ & A", woven in red directly onto the front. The inner leather band is worn and the peak has a defect to the left, it is however an amazing survivor and as such this example is illustrated in Frogatt. - Sold for £110

Lot 45 A "Cheshire Lines" Cast Iron Sign "NOTICE, THE CHESHIRE LINES COMMITTEE HEREBY GIVE NOTICE PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF THE L&NE RAILWAY ACT 1924 SECTION 70 AND THE L.M.& S RAILWAY Co ACT 1924 SECTION 53, THAT THIS RAILWAY IS THEIR PRIVATE PROPERTY, BY ORDER". Original paintwork on front and back red, 25"x15", with raised lip at edge on front and back. This is the Pre-Nationalization version of the CLC trespass sign, significantly rarer than the Pre-Grouping Type. - Sold for £250

Lot 46 A small freestanding Tinplate Advertising Calendar "JOHNNIE WALKER SCOTCH WHISKY, born 1820, Still Going Strong", multicoloured and featuring the character of J.W and a bottle, with number 1-31 to flip over. 9_"x9", an aperture at top to insert the month and stand attached to the rear. - Sold for £35

Lot 47 A Single Line Key Token "WESTERFIELD-DERBY ROAD", (brass), from the G.E.R. Ipswich (East Suffolk Junction) to Felixstowe Branch. - Sold for £150

Lot 48 A Locomotive Worksplate "ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD, 7034, NEWCASTLE & DARLINGTON, 1940", from a 0-4-0ST O/C ex works on the 9th of June 1941. It went new to Swansea Hematyte Iron Co Ltd, Landore which was later taken over by Richard Thomas & Baldwins Ltd. It was scrapped in about February 1969. Cast brass oval, 12 7/8x8_", the front repainted blue, the back untouched. - Sold for £230

Lot 49 A Shedplate "89 D", (Oswestry, 1960-1963), unrestored with original paintwork. - Sold for £90

Lot 50 A BR(S) light blue Totem sign "FORFAR", (f/f), from the Caledonian Railway Perth to Aberdeen Main Line. The station closed on the 4th of September 1967, though freight traffic from Perth continued until 1982. Good colour, though loss of shine, one chip repair at lower edge directly below the "A". - Sold for £700

Lot 51 A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Double Line Signal Box Block Instrument with large engraved brass plate "WATERLOO, A", from a box on the Liverpool to Southport route, 18" high, excellent condition. - Sold for £300

Lot 52 A Great Northern Railway Ground Signal, with red "GNR" circular faceplate designed to rotate 90 degrees to exhibit the relevant aspect and complete with its large lamp, brass plated "HUNTINGDON" & "GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY". The overall height is 35", including a 16"x14" base plate, and it is complete with all fittings, most marked with the company initials, and is in working order. - Sold for £400

Lot 53 A Southern Railway enamel Target Sign "TISBURY", from the Templecombe to Salisbury section of the LSWR West of England Main Line. One of the few small stations on the route to survive the 1966 closure of the smaller stations on the route, good colour and fair shine with the usual small edge chips and an area of repair on the left side of the letter "R". - Sold for £400

Lot 54 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 8129 STRATFORD WORKS, 1921", from a Great Eastern Railway Class B74, LNER Y4 Class, 0-4-0T built at Stratford in January 1921, one of a Class of only five engines which were extremely large and powerful for their wheel arrangement and worked in the Stratford area all their lives. It was GER/LNER No 7210, was classed as a Service Locomotive at Grouping, renumbered 8129 in 1946, 68129 by BR and Departmental No 33 in 1952. It shunted at Stratford Old Works until these closed in 1963 when it was withdrawn. Brass oval 9"x5", ex loco condition. - Sold for £580

Lot 55 A BR(M) double royal poster "COLWYN BAY", by Bruce Arngrove, an early 1950s view of the promenade and pier with sports cars and holiday makers, above happy trippers sit on a silhouetted boiler of a steam engine. A busy colourful image of the era, rolled with minor nicks in the white border. - Sold for £170

Lot 56 A North Eastern Railway Signal Box Nameboard "BRIDGE STREET", a box in Pickering on the Malton-Whitby route which closed to passengers on the 8th of March 1965, cast lettering on wood, with beading and moulding, 63"x10_", repainted. - Sold for £210

Lot 57 A Single Line Key Token "BISHOPS LYDEARD-CROWCOMBE", (steel/metal engraved plate), from the GWR Taunton to Minehead branch, which closed on the 4th of January 1971, though by this time signal boxes had been closed and the route was operated as a "Basic Railway". - Sold for £340

Lot 58 A Carriage Print "LITTLE MORETON HALL, NEAR CONGLETON, CHESHIRE, A National Trust Property", by Ronald Lampitt, a view of the half timbered building with its colourful gardens set beside the river, the print is not framed. - Sold for £190

Lot 59 A Great Northern Railway 10" dial Wall Clock, with fusee movement, pendulum and key. The original face marked "BR, NE, 10656" with ghost lettering visible "W Potts & Sons, G.N.R. Leeds, 799". The clock has a door to each side and at base, the latter worn at left edge, working order. It was used at Leeds. - Sold for £1000

Lot 60 A BR(M) maroon enamel Station Direction Sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, VICTORIA STATION", (f/f) with the company name in totem logo at top and left hand arrow at base. It could have been used at either Nottingham or Manchester. 28"x13", excellent colour and shine with chipping just into the right rim and flange, a little wasting around one fixing hole. - Sold for £700

Lot 61 A BR(E) dark blue enamel sign "TRAFFIC MANAGER", (f/f), 24"x12", excellent colour and shine, edge chipping at right side and one chip at top of the last letter. - Sold for £85

Lot 62 A Shed Plate "87G", (Carmarthen 1949-64), repainted long ago over original paintwork. - Sold for £280

Lot 63 A Smokebox Numberplate "43687", from a Midland Rly Class 3F 0-6-0 built by Neilson Reid & Co in June 1901, Works No 4048. It was re-boilered in 1913 and 1923 and became LMS 3687, BR 43687. A long-time Bournville engine, it spent its final years at Saltley from where it was withdrawn in August 1960. After eight months in store at Saltley, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in May 1963. The front repainted. - Sold for £380

Lot 64 A Great Western Railway Pre-Grouping Doorplate "PORTERS", cast iron, 18"x3_" with moulded border, unrestored with some original paint on edges. - Sold for £140

Lot 65 A Cast Iron Sign "OXFORD CANAL NAVIGATION, TO TRACTION ENGINE DRIVERS AND OTHERS,....", referring to weights beyond the ordinary traffic of the district, 35"x20_" with scalloped corners, the front repainted. - Sold for £200

Lot 66 A Single Line Key Token, "THINGLEY JCN-BRADFORD JCN", (alloy), from the GWR Chippenham to Westbury route, via Melksham. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 18th of April 1966, the line remained open for freight and diversionary traffic with a new passenger service being introduced in 1985. - Sold for £150

Lot 67 A South Eastern Railway platform lamp with white china name "CLIFFE", from the Port Victoria and Allhallows on Sea branch which left the London to Dover main line at Hoo Junction, east of Gravesend. The original branch opened in 1882 with the SR adding the short line to Allhallows in 1932. Passenger Services were withdrawn on the 4th of December 1961. The lamp is 22" high with green paintwork, a large reflector and interior (not matching). Excellent condition. - Sold for £180

Lot 68 A Locomotive Worksplate "L.B. & S.C.R, 70, REBUILT 1923, BRIGHTON WORKS", from a B4X Class 4-4-0 which emerged from Brighton Works in May 1923, rebuilt with K Class boiler from the original B4 Class 4-4-0 No 70 built by Sharp Stewart & Co in 1901, Works No 4777, named "Holyrood" when built and renamed "Devonshire" in 1907, although de-named altogether by the time of rebuilding. It was renumbered 2070 when rebuilt by the SR, becoming BR 32070. It was shedded at Eastbourne in 1912, Portsmouth by the Grouping, New Cross Gate by 1946 and finally Bricklayers Arms from where it was withdrawn in August 1951. Engraved brass oval, 9_"x5_" in ex loco condition with original paintwork on the rim. (see following lot) - Sold for £4000

Lot 77 A Webb & Thompson Large Single Line Train Staff "REDGATE MILL-ROTHERFIELD", from the LB&SCR Eridge to Polegate route which closed on the 14th of June 1965. Tubular steel with brass rings and cast brass name plates. Redgate Mill was the junction for the line to Lewes via Uckfield. - Sold for £350

Lot 78 A London, Brighton & South Coast Railway large 2-aspect Locomotive Headlamp with white bullseye lens, large brass side catch and piecrust top, with handle. The case and top are both stamped with the company's initials. Repainted black, but lacks the interior and glasses, overall 17" high. - Sold for £250

Lot 79 A locomotive Worksplate "BRUSH SULZER, No 532, 1964", from a BR Class 47 D1770 which entered traffic at Tinsley in April 1964, was renumbered 47175 in February 1974 and 47575 in March 1981 and named "City of Hereford" in June 1985. The nameplates were removed in August 1999. After a period out of service it was restored at Old Oak Common in May 2001 as part of the newly formed heritage fleet but was placed in store in March 2003. Cast aluminium oval, 9_"x55/8", the plate has original paintwork on the front, the back is lightly cleaned. - Sold for £300

Lot 80 A Locomotive nameplate "ARBURY HALL", with its matching Cabside and Smokebox Numberplate from the GWR 4900 "Hall" Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon and allocated new to Reading in November 1939. It finished its GWR days at Old Oak Common and its later sheds were Shrewsbury, Tyseley, Swindon, Didcot and Westbury from where it was withdrawn in September 1963. It was cut up at Coopers Metals Ltd, Sharpness the following December. This was one of eleven Halls converted to oil-burning after the war and it was renumbered 3954 on conversion in May 1947. It was restored to its original condition and reverted to No 5986 in February 1950. The actual Hall is situated three miles south-west of Nuneaton in Warwickshire. An opportunity to acquire a "full set" from a GWR named engine. Excellent condition, the lettering and beading polished, the original paintwork cleaned. The numberplates have been repainted on the front only. - Sold for £7600

Lot 81 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COY LTD, 1927, No 23654, HYDE PARK WORKS, GLASGOW", from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 No 4485/ 44485. Its BR sheds were Goole, Mirfield, Wakefield and finally Stourton from where it was withdrawn in April 1963 and it was cut up at Horwich Works the following September. Lot 93 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "BURSTON", (h/f), from the GER Ipswich to Norwich Main Line, situated just north of Diss. The station closed on the 7th of November 1966. Excellent colour and shine, restored above "T", to left of top of "S" and centre right of lower panel. - Sold for £660

Lot 95 An Engraved Brass Entrance Plate "SHREWSBURY AND HEREFORDSHIRE RAILWAY COMPY". The company was incorporated on the 3rd of August 1846 and opened between Shrewsbury and Ludlow on the 20th of April 1852 and from Ludlow to Hereford on the 6th of December 1853. From the 1st of July 1862 it was leased to the GW, LNW & West Midland companies, until the 4th of July 1870 when it was formally vested jointly in the GWR & LNWR. This superb plate is 18"x14", utilising four differing styles of lettering. A unique and historic item believed to have been used at the Head Offices. - Sold for £1400

Lot 98 A Road Signpost Roundel "HAMPSHIRE, KIMPTON", cast aluminium 15" diameter with base fitting, original condition with "GOWSHALL Ltd" cast on one side. The village of Kimpton is situated between Andover and Tidworth, between the LSWR West of England Main Line and the Midland & South Western Junction route and just north of the present A303.

Lot 103 A set of bound plans for The North Devon and Cornwall Junction Light Railway, "BR WESTERN REGION, BARNSTAPLE TO HALWILL JUNCTION, 11 MILES TO 20 _ MILES, VOL 226 PART 4, District Engineer", gilt title on maroon cloth boards (repeated on front of cloth/board slipcase). The plans are to a scale of 1_" = one chain, hand coloured and show the complete track layout, every building, bridge, crossing, gradients etc, with notes on the acquisition of land to build the line included, disposals after closure (the latest being 1980). The plans are designed to open in book form; starting at Halwill Junction the line is shown to a point a few miles beyond Hatherleigh Station. Lot 107 A London and North Western Railway Tenderplate "L&NWR, No 918". The plate is accompanied by a BR receipt dated 1967, (as after withdrawal the vehicle was used as a sludge tender at Derby until the 1960s), also correspondence outlining research from the LNWR Society indicating that the tender was attached to the following locomotives - 5969 and 9154 in early LMS days, 9308 in October 1945, 8895 and 49049 in September 1961. Rectangular cast iron, 11_"x5", cleaned and primered. - Sold for £140

Lot 109 An LB & SCR 4-aspect Handlamp, complete with its embossed brass badge "LONDON BRIGHTON SOUTH COAST RAILWAY COMPANY" and stamped "B1355, FORD JUNC", the body is also stamped with the company's initials, on the top a circular brass "B" plate has been added over the initials. Excellent condition with interior (SR burner, S(B)R vessel), reflectors and copper cone, repainted and lacking orange glass. Ford is on the Brighton to Portsmouth route the junction for Bognor Regis and the Arun valley line to Victoria. The lamp is sympathetically repainted. - Sold for £130

Lot 113 A French Locomotive Tenderplate "S.N.C.F. 30.R. 161" from the tender attached to Class 30.R locomotive 141.R.161 built Lima Ohio. It entered service in July 1946 and was allocated to Chalindrey, Chalous and Sarregumines respectively. It was withdrawn in 1969. Cast brass, 22"x12_" in ex loco condition with original white on red paintwork. - Sold for £100

Lot 114 A Worksplate Renumbering Strip "65824", from a North Eastern Railway Class P3, LNER J27 Class, 0-6-0 built by North British Locomotive Co in June 1908, Works No 18369, NER/ early LNER No 1039. It was renumbered 5824 in 1946, becoming BR 65824. It spent many years at South Blyth from where it was officially withdrawn in December 1959. It was, however, actually cut up the previous month at the site of a crash involving this loco between Ashington and Bellington. Ex loco condition. - Sold for £150

Lot 119 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "HATHERLEIGH - HOLE", (brass), from the North Devon & Cornwall Junction Light Railway, this new route opened in 1925 linking the LSWR Torrington branch with Halwill Junction. Passenger Services were withdrawn on the 1st of March 1965, having lasted only 40 years, although the northern part of the route remained in use for China Clay Traffic as late as 1982. - Sold for £1050

Lot 123 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRITISH RAILWAYS, CREWE BUILT, 1961, POWER EQUIPMENT BY SULZER AND CROMPTON PARKINSON", from BR Class 46 D147/ 46010 which entered traffic at Derby in December 1961. It was first withdrawn in December but reinstated the following November and finally withdrawn from Gateshead in November 1984. Aluminium, 13"x6_", the front repainted, the back only lightly cleaned. - Sold for £270

Lot 124 An Industrial Name and Worksplate set "COLLINS GREEN" and "PECKETT & SONS LTD No 1762, BRISTOL 1933" from a 0-4-0ST O/C, Peckett type 6, which went new to Sutton Heath & Lea Green Colliery Ltd, Bold where it was named "Bold No 2". The Colliery became part of the National Coal Board on the 1st of January 1947. The engine had moved to Haydock Colliery by May 1958 where it retained its name but in less than a month it had moved again, this time to Ravenhead Colliery where it was renamed "Collins Green. It returned to Bold Colliery in April 1960 and in March 1962 to Ravenhead where it was cut up on site in July 1973. The nameplate is of Peckett pattern with serif lettering, though on this example the letters and border are riveted to a steel backplate. 53_"x73/8", the background repainted maroon. The worksplate is an engraved brass oval 15_"x8_", face polished though plenty of original green paint on the rim. (2) - Sold for £840

Lot 127 A Smokebox Numberplate "5922", from the GWR 4900 "Hall" Class 4-6-0 "Caxton Hall" built at Swindon and allocated new to Old Oak Common in May 1933. It was still there at the end of its GWR days and later spent many years at Swindon before ending its time at Oxford from where it was withdrawn in January 1964 and it was cut up at Swindon Works the following month. One of the more famous GWR Halls, the actual building is in Westminster where it was originally built as the Town Hall in 1882 and later used as a hall for public meetings. Repainted. - Sold for £500

Lot 128 An LMS Enamel Station Sign "KILSBY & CRICK", from the LNWR Rugby to Northampton route, the station closed on the 1st February 1960. Cream on maroon with cream border, 48"x26", face chips at left edge into border and a couple of small face chips but good colour and shine. - Sold for £1050

Lot 129 A GWR Cast Iron Notice "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NO ADMITTANCE, EXCEPT ON BUSINESS, BY ORDER", unrestored with original paintwork, 14_"x9". This is a variation on the usual example which uses the word "Admission". The alteration to the pattern is visible on the sign, the new wording being on a slightly raised bar. Lot 130 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 8338, COWLAIRS WORKS 1912", from a North British Railway Class F, LNER J88 Class, 0-6-0T, new in December 1912, NBR No 66. It became LNER 9066, was re-numbered 8338 in 1946, becoming BR 68338. Throughout its lifetime it was based at St Margarets and regularly employed on shunting duties at St Leonards Goods Station in Edinburgh, the terminus of the former Edinburgh & Dalkeith Railway and the capital's first station. It was withdrawn in September 1961 and, following a period in store at Bathgate, was cut up at Inverurie Works the following March. Brass oval 9"x5", the front repainted. - Sold for £210

Lot 140 A Single Line Staff "COLE GREEN & HERTFORD NORTH", from the Great Northern Railway's Welwyn to Hertford route. The staff is 20" long and of steel construction with a triangular head stamped with the section. The body is tubular with a small triangular end, grooved and hollow. It is almost certainly of pre-grouping vintage, in which case it would have been used to the first "North" station which was situated between the present North station and the East station on the GER line to St Margarets. The first "North" station closed on the 2nd of June 1924. The Welwyn to Hertford route closed in 1966, though the station at Cole Green closed in 1951. - Sold for £540

Lot 141 An LNER Signal Box Block Instrument with Down and Up Line indicators in chromed brass surrounds, with black bakelite commutator below with brass backplate. The wooden case is painted black with a hand engraved brass plate at the top "TO BALDOCK", below a traffolite plate "DOWN BLOCK TO BALDOCK" and tapper to the right, the overall height is 15_". Baldock is situated on the GNR route from Hitchen to Cambridge. - Sold for £160

Lot 142 A BR(NE) tangerine Station Direction Sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, WILMINGTON STATION", with totem at top and right hand feathered arrow. The station was on the Hull-Hornsea/Withernsea branch and situated in the north west of Hull. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 19th of October 1964, though freight traffic continued until 1969. Brass Locomotive Numberplate "SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS, E1782, 6E1", from a 3'6" gauge Class 6E1 electric locomotive built in South Africa by the Union Carriage & Wagon Co, Nigel in the 1970s and early 1980s, the most numerous single class of locos to have operated in South Africa. Lot 152 A locomotive Worksplate "SUPER-SENTINEL PATENT LOCOMOTIVE, MAKERS THE "SENTINEL" WAGON WORKS LTD, SHREWSBURY, IN ALL CORRESPONDENCE MENTION LOCO No 8331", from the LNER Y3 Class 0-4-0 Sentinel Type C.E.D.G. which entered traffic at Wrexham in October 1930, LNER No 98. It was transferred from running stock to departmental stock in September 1942, renumbered 8178 in 1946 and allocated BR No 68178 although it did not carry this number. Instead it was given Departmental No 42 in March 1953 by which time it was located at Cambridge Engineers Department from where it was withdrawn in July 1960. Cast brass, 51/8"x9_" with curved top. The plate features a knight with sword and helmet, its surround reading "EVER WATCHFUL & ON THE ALERT, TRADE MARK", at the sides are twenty four patent numbers under which the locomotive was built. The front of the plate is painted, the back untouched. - Sold for £600

Lot 155 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "PINHOE", (f/f), the station was situated just east of Exmouth Junction Sheds, on the LSWR Salisbury to Exeter Main Line, it closed on the 7th of March 1966 along with many other intermediate stations, when much of the route was rationalised. Pinhoe was notable in retaining its original LSWR wooden signal box controlling the single line section to the east for many years. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £1450

The route closed to passengers on the 30th of January 1967, with China Clay traffic lasting until 1983. Tubular steel with brass rings and cast brass plates. Lot 163 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 69911, GATESHEAD WORKS 1909", from a North Eastern Railway Class X, LNER Class T1, 4-8-0T built at Gateshead in September 1909, NER/LNER No 1351, renumbered 9911 in 1946, becoming BR 69911. One of a class of 13 heavy shunters designed for working in the largest yards, it was at Newport at the Grouping and remained there until withdrawn in March 1957 working in the Erimus hump yards adjacent to the shed. It was cut up the following month at Darlington Works. Brass oval 9"x5", the plate has been cleaned and the face repainted. - Sold for £760

Lot 164 A Smokebox Numberplate "90342", from a War Department "Austerity" 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by North British Locomotive Co in August 1944, Works No 24943, WD No 70875 and shipped to France. On return to the UK it was placed in store until acquired by BR in May 1949 becoming 90342. A long time Wakefield engine, it was withdrawn from there in November 1965 and was cut up at Drapers, Hull three months later. Ex loco condition. - Sold for £550

Lot 166 A Locomotive Nameplate "SUNSTAR", from the LNER A1 Class 4-6-2 built by North British Locomotive Co in September 1924, Works No 23109, LNER No 2571. It was rebuilt as an A3 in July 1941 and renumbered 72 in 1946, becoming BR 60072. It was allocated new to Gateshead in October 1924 and later to Heaton, Tweedmouth, Copley Hill, Holbeck and finally Heaton again from where it was withdrawn in October 1962 and, after six months in store at Blaydon, cut up at Doncaster Works in May 1963. The engine is named after the racehorse owned by Mr JB Joel which won the 1911 Derby and 2000 Guineas. Curved brass, overall 56" long, the front repainted and mounted on a wooden "Splasher". The back of the plate is untouched and the base is clearly stamped "72 " and "2571". - Sold for £10000

Lot 180 A Great Western Railway Board game "RACE TO THE OCEAN COAST", with original box featuring 6000, KING GEORGE V at speed, the folding board shows a map of the company's system with coat of arms and vignettes of towns, also included are the three painted metal "engine" tokens (one broken) and dice cup, together with a replacement dice and a photocopy of the rules. The game was produced by Chad Valley Ltd for the GWR, this being noted on the box and board. Generally a good example for its age with a little wear at corners of box.

Lot 184 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRIGHTON WORKS, 1906", from a London Brighton & South Coast Railway C3 Class 0-6-0, designed by D.E.Marsh, LB&SCR No 305, one of a class of only ten engines, designed to replace smaller engines of the C2 Class. It was allocated new to Brighton, had moved to Tunbridge Wells by 1911 and was transferred just after the outbreak of the First World War to Horsham. It was renumbered 2305 by the Southern Railway and by 1930 had moved to New Cross but finished its days at Norwood Junction from where it was withdrawn in September 1937 and was cut up at Ashford Works in the November. Engraved brass oval on steel boss, 6 _"x4" in ex loco condition, the back is clearly stamped "305". - Sold for £1350

Lot 197 A Preston & Longridge Railway Boundary Post, inscribed "P&L Ry BOUNDARY POST", (LNWR pattern), 44" high with foot and rib at back. The line was opened in 1840 and ran from Deepdale Street, north east to Tottle Heights Quarries, beyond Longridge, a connection was made to the Main Line in 1850. Passenger services ceased on the 2nd of June 1930, although freight traffic continued until 1967. - Sold for £920

Lot 198 A Locomotive Worksplate "R&W HAWTHORN, LESLIE & Co LTD, ENGINEERS, NEWCASTLE ON TYNE, ENGLAND, 3389, 1919", from a 0-4-0ST O/C which was ex works on the 9th October 1919 and went new to Bolsover Colliery Co Ltd at Rufford Colliery where it was named "Rufford No 2". The Colliery became part of the National Coal Board on the 1st January 1947. It had been de-named by May 1957 and during 1958 went to Cripston Colliery for spares. The intention was that the best parts of this engine and another Hawthorn Leslie engine were to be amalgamated to make, in effect, a new loco. This project was, however, abandoned and the engine was scrapped in June 1964. Cast brass oval, 13"x8_", the front of the plate is repainted black, the back lightly cleaned. - Sold for £200

Lot 199 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "ROSE STREET-CLACKNAHARRY", (brass), the first section of the Highland Railway Far North Line. Inverness Rose Street box stood at right angles between the route north and the station avoiding line. Clacknaharry was the first station and closed to passengers on the 1st of April 1913, the box however remained, controlling the swing bridge over the Caledonian Canal. A very old tablet, solid brass, well used but with clear engraving. - Sold for £720

Calderpark was a new station built in 1952 to serve the nearby Zoo of the same name. As passenger services were withdrawn from the branch on the 4th of July 1955, the station was something of a white elephant, though it has the distinction of displaying its name on totems for one of the shortest periods of any, and being one of the few so adorned for its whole life and, being a very early closure, it has excellent colour and shine with a couple of small chips repainted and an odd blemish. - Sold for £480

It later moved to Thornley Coal Preparation Plant in October 1974, to Wearmouth Colliery in March 1976, to Dudley Colliery in April 1976 and to the Lambton Railway in April 1977 where it was named "Philadelphia". In August 1979 it went to the Tyne & Wear Industrial Monuments Trust at Springwell (now the Bowes Railway) for preservation. Cast brass oval, 12"x17_", with brass characters and chromed border, the loco number stamped on a brass bar. The front of the plate has been repainted red, the back in black. - Sold for £180

Lot 237 An SR Brass Cabside Numberplate "SOUTHERN RAILWAY, B.172", from the London Brighton & South Coast Railway B Class 0-4-2 No 172 built at Brighton in April 1891 to William Stroudley's design and named "Littlehampton", the Class always known as "Gladstones" after the first built which bore the name of the contemporary Liberal Prime Minister. Brighton had the largest number of Gladstones including No 172; they monopolised the London expresses and these tiny engines hauled most of the principal LBSCR expresses until the turn of the century. No 172 later moved to Battersea but spent its final years back at Brighton where, as the last surviving Gladstone, it acquired celebrity status until withdrawn in September 1933. Cast brass oval 13_"x7_", completely ex loco condition with original red background, green paint on rim and both fixing bolts in the back. An historic plate. - Sold for £2700

Lot 245 A London and South Western Railway Platform lamp with "COLYTON", in glass panel, with raised blue lettering, solid copper with fluted top and lead corner decorations intact, original green paintwork, 33" high, at the right side one roof glass missing and the glass side below cracked. The lamp is from the Seaton to Seaton Junction branch in East Devon, which closed on the 7th of March 1966, although the station is now the northern terminus of the Seaton Tramway. Only a handful of these superb lamps have appeared in auction, most being replaced by Gas lighting and Targets in the 1930s. - Sold for £680

Lot 260 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 7277, REBUILT STRATFORD WORKS, 1908", from a Great Eastern Railway Class T18, LNER Class J66, 0-6-0T built at Stratford in June 1886, GER No 277, and reboilered in 1908 which Stratford regarded as rebuilding. It became LNER No 7277 and was withdrawn in July 1938 but four months later was sold to the Ashington Coal Co, Northumberland where it became their No 19. It retained this plate until withdrawal in December 1944. Brass oval 9"x5", ex loco condition. - Sold for £420

Lot 261 A GWR Brass Cabside Numberplate "4258", from a GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon in May 1917. It was allocated to Barry by 1922, to Newport Pill by 1947 and later to Ebbw Junction, Neath, Aberdare and finally Severn Tunnel Junction from where it was withdrawn in April 1965 and where it was then stored for five months before being cut up at Birds, Risca the following September. The front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £850

Lot 262 A One Engine In Steam Train Staff "LLANWRTYD WELLS-LLANDOVERY", from the LNWR Central Wales Line from Shrewsbury to Swansea. This section of the route includes the famous Sugar Loaf Summit. The staff was brought into use when key token working was withdrawn north of Llandovery and the intermediate boxes at Cynhordy and Sugar Loaf closed. It has a wooden body, a 7" engraved brass plate, steel cap and handle to the right end and a steel cap and key to the left, it has been cleaned and the metal repainted. - Sold for £200

Lot 264 A Great Northern Railway Signal Box Block Instrument with traffolite plate "FROM FIRSBY STATION", non-pegging, ex Boston to Grimsby route. Firsby was the junction for Skegness before the northerly part of the line closed on the 5th of October 1970. Good original condition although the green surround repainted. - Sold for £100

Lot 265 A Halifax & Ovenden Joint Railway Steel Die for producing buttons for the line, overall 15/8" diameter with domed top to form button "L&Y & GN", the back is clearly marked "H.O". The short joint line ran from Halifax to Holmfield, thence as purely GNR to Keighley and Bradford. - Sold for £25

Lot 266 A Great Western Railway Locomotive Tenderplate "G.W.R. 2605, 4000 GALLONS, SWINDON", from one of a series of standard Collett tenders built between November 1931 and June 1932 and used on Kings, Castles, Stars, Halls and Granges. Cast iron oval 8_"x61/8", repainted white on dark green.

Lot 267 A Smokebox Numberplate "44142", from a LMS Class 4 (later 4F) 0-6-0 built at Crewe in 1925, LMS No 4142. It finished its days at Derby from where it was withdrawn in December 1959 but from December 1958 until May 1960 it was stored near Derby Station. It was cut up at Doncaster Works in June 1960. The numbers repainted otherwise original condition. - Sold for £250

Lot 268 A London & North Western Railway 12" dial Wall Clock with fusee movement, pendulum and key. The clock originates from a line that became part of the Western Region, the original face being marked "BR-W" and an ivorine plate on the left side reads "BR-WRY, 4945". Fine condition with doors to the right side and base. Possible locations include Oxford to Bicester route, the Central Wales Line, the Joint Lines from Shrewsbury or South Wales.

Lot 269 A locomotive Worksplate "(LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co), No 1868, DONCASTER, 1938", from the LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No 4466 "SIR RALPH WEDGWOOD" which was briefly renumbered 605 in January 1946 and No 6 just four months later, becoming BR 60006. It entered traffic at Kings Cross in January 1938 but quickly moved to Grantham the following April. It was named "SIR RALPH WEDGWOOD" at Kings Cross station on the 22nd of January 1944 after the retired LNER Chief General Manager (having formerly borne the name "Herring Gull") and the following August was again allocated to Kings Cross where this time it was to remain for the best part of twenty years before moving briefly to New England and then a final couple of glorious years in Scotland, first at St Margarets and then at Aberdeen Ferryhill working the Glasgow service before withdrawal in September 1965. Following three months in store at Ferryhill, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw in January 1966. Engraved brass oval 13_"x75/8", the company name filled with copperish brass enabling it to be easily read. The back of the plate is stamped "6" & "4466", the face polished, green loco paint is still in evidence on the rim. - Sold for £5800

Lot 277 A Locomotive Worksplate "No 4719, 1936, THE VULCAN FOUNDRY (LIMITED), NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS, LANCASHIRE", from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8042 which entered traffic in September 1936 but was requisitioned by the War Department in October 1941 becoming WD No 596. It was despatched to Middle Eastern Forces in Persia two months later receiving MEF No 9379 and then Persian Railways No 41.207, never to return to the UK. In 1944 it was officially withdrawn from LMS stock and renumbered WD 70596 and was one of 23 engines of its class taken into the stock of the Israeli Railways in April 1948 where they were known, appropriately, as "Class LMS". They worked in Israel until replaced by diesels in 1958. Cast brass oval, 9"x5_", the front of the plate has been repainted black, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £220

Lot 282 A Smokebox Numberplate "40030", from a LMS Class 3 2-6-2T built at Derby in 1931, LMS No 15529, renumbered No 30 in 1934. A long-time Cricklewood engine fitted with condensing apparatus for working around London, it finished its days at Kentish Town from where it was withdrawn in August 1959. It was stored at Derby until January 1961 and cut up at Crewe Works the following month. The front repainted, the back in ex loco condition. - Sold for £600

Lot 283 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside Numberplate "7318", from a 4300 Class 2-6-0 built at Swindon in December 1921. It was at Hereford in 1922 and its final GWR shed was Reading. In BR days it moved to West Wales, at Llanelly, Neyland, Duffryn Yard and Neath with final brief stays at Pontypool Road and Gloucester (Horton Road) from where it was withdrawn in November 1964 and cut up the following February at Woodfields, Newport. Ex loco condition except that the numbers and beading may have been repainted over the original paint a long time ago. Interestingly, although the engine was built at Swindon, the plate is a contractor style casting with circular rear lugs, almost certainly because Nos 7305-19 were erected from parts supplied by Robert Stephensons and these presumably included the numberplates. Ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £780

The original face indicates "Train On Line/Line Clear/Line Blocked", a maroon, white and light green background, flaking at base, the pegging apparatus has been neatly removed to convert the instrument. Ex box condition, a crack to the glass and one small section of wood absent at right side of case. The station was between Radstock North and Chilcompton. The Line closed on the 7th of March 1966. - Sold for £540

Lot 286 A Worksplate Renumbering Strip "69851", from a North Eastern Railway class D, LNER A8 Class 4-6-2T, originally built at Darlington in October 1913 as a 4-4-4T and rebuilt as a 4-6-2 in March 1935. It was LNER No 2144, was renumbered 9851 in 1946, becoming BR 69851. A long-time West Auckland engine, it was withdrawn from there in November 1958 and, after eight months in store at Barnard Castle, was cut up at Darlington Works in July 1959. Lot 288 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "GALASHIELS", (h/f) from the North British Railway Waverley Route, closed on the 6th of January 1969. Excellent colour and shine, though a vertical repair between the "E" and "L" and chip repairs between "I" and "E", all well matched. - Sold for £420

Lot 293 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY Ltd LONDON, NO 3232/D757.1962. THE VULCAN FOUNDRY LTD LOCOMOTIVE WORKS ENGLAND", from a BR Class 37 D6803/37103/37511/37607 which entered traffic at Darnall in January 1963. It was named "Stockton Haulage" at Stockton station on February 1988 and was sold to Direct Rail Services in July 1997. Chromed brass rectangle, 101/8"x4_", the front background repainted blue. - Sold for £250

Lot 294 A London and North Western Railway Locomotive Nameplate "MARS. L&NWR Co, CREWE WORKS, AUGT 1903", from an Alfred the Great Class 4-4-0 4-cylinder compound No 1977 which entered traffic in July 1903. It was rebuilt by the LMS in February 1924 as a 2-cylinder simple and re-classified as Renown class, was renumbered 5129 in June 1927, withdrawn in December 1930 and cut up at Crewe Works. The name was taken from the Roman god of war or the planet or, most likely in view of other nautical names in the Class, a battleship which saw service between 1894 and 1921. The nameplate is 56" long in virtually ex loco condition and was discovered recently in a loft; neither nameplate from this engine hitherto known to have survived. Curved brass, in ex loco condition and retaining most of the original wax infill. - Sold for £8000

Lot 295 A Cunard Lines Advertising Poster "QUEEN ELIZABETH, QUEEN MARY, CUNARD LINE, BY FAR THE LARGEST SUPERLINERS IN THE WORLD" by C.C.Evers, a view of two ships at sea with a dramatic sunset, 29"x41", (landscape), rolled and in excellent condition.

Lot 296 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "HORAM", (h/f), from the LB&SCR Redgate Mill Junction (Eridge) to Polegate route, the station closed on the 14th of June 1965. Excellent colour and shine with a few very minor blemishes and two tiny chips at the extreme right. Original condition as removed from the station. - Sold for £4800

Lot 298 A Single Line Key Token "POOL QUAY-LLANYMYNECH", (alloy), from the Cambrian Railways Whitchurch to Welshpool route, to the south of Oswestry. The line closed on the 18th of January 1965.

Lot 299 A Southern Railway enamel Target sign "WEST WORTHING" from the LBSCR Brighton to Portsmouth coastal route, good colour and a little loss of shine, the usual edge chips filled and matched and a chip at top between the "E" and the "S" just into the upper edges of the letters. - Sold for £480

Lot 301 A Smokebox Numberplate "43947", from a Midland Railway 3835 Class (later 4 & 4F) 0-6-0 built by Armstrong Whitworth & Co in 1921, Works No 426, MR and LMS No 3947. It spent most of its BR days at Cricklewood but moved late on to Kettering, Toton, Buxton, Newton Heath and finally Trafford Park from where it was withdrawn in October 1964. After four months in store at Trafford Park it was cut up the following February at Wards, Killamarsh. The front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £320

Lot 302 A Framed Notice "LONDON MIDLAND AND SCOTTISH RAILWAY Co, ENGINEERING DEPT, NOTICE TO PLATELAYERS AND OTHERS.....EUSTON MARCH 1932". The notice instructs staff to keep clear of running lines and describes ten fatal accidents in the previous three months, all caused by lack of attention, overall 8_"x13_", red on white. - Sold for £55
