Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 28 April 2007

Lot 35 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "GWR, 2186", from an ex Brecon & Merthyr Railway 0-6-0ST built by J Fowler in January 1886, Works No 5057, B&M No 14. When the B&M and its engines were absorbed by the GWR on 1st of July 1922, it received its GWR numberplates and was allocated to the main B&M shed at Bessaleg until this closed in 1929. It was withdrawn in December 1934 and was one of six ex B&M locos placed on a sales list by the GWR but was the only one to find a purchaser, the other five being cut up at Swindon. No 2186 was sold to R Frazer & Sons Ltd, Hebburn, Co Durham in June 1936 and they resold it a month later to Hazelrigg & Burradon Coal Co Ltd, Newcastle-on-Tyne. When scrapped in 1944 it still carried its GWR numberplates and this one was acquired by a local enthusiast. The first cabside from an ex B&M engine to appear in auction, it is clearly stamped "B&M 14" on the lower beading (the locomotive's original number). The front repainted long ago.
 This lot sold for £3000
