It was later renumbered 4105 as some of the "Badminton" numbers in the early 33XX series were required for another 4-4-0 type, the "Bulldogs". In 1903 Earl Cawdor underwent a startling transformation when it was fitted with a very large experimental round top boiler and also a double side window cab, the combined effect of which was to give the engine a distinctly North Eastern Railway appearance. The experimental boiler was, however, removed in 1906 and scrapped as no advantage could be found with it and the non-standard cab had an even shorter life, being replaced by the standard GWR pattern in November 1904. The nameplates were an early version of what became the standard GWR pattern but had narrower backplates extending below the actual name. It was allocated new to Taunton but by 1921 had moved to Bristol (at that time the two GWR Bristol sheds had a joint allocation) and was withdrawn from there in November 1927. The name honoured the then current GWR Chairman who had been a Director since 1890 and was Chairman from 1895 to 1905 when he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. The name was perpetuated on engines of the Dukedog and Castle classes. When the locomotive was withdrawn, the nameplate was purchased by Colonel Eales, an early member of the Stephenson Locomotive Society. Swindon Works produced a superb wooden mount for the plate (in identical style to those already displayed at the Works from historic locomotives) with an inscription below "Presented to the STEPHENSON LOCOMOTIVE SOCIETY by Colonel Eales who rode on the footplate of this engine from PADDINGTON TO EXETER (194 miles, non-stop) in September 1899". The nameplate was originally fitted to a wooden backplate on the locomotive with fixings between the lettering, however this arrangement proved unsatisfactory and the plate was later mounted in the traditional manner on steel struts. The plate has solid brass lettering, unlike later GWR examples which utilised hollow castings. A letter from the SLS authorising the sale of the plate accompanies this lot. - Sold for £16500 Lot 62 A Shedplate "1A", (Willesden 1948-65 ), repainted. - Sold for £100 Lot 63 A GWR cast iron Signal Box Door Notice "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NOTICE, NO UNAUTHORISED PERSON IS ALLOWED IN THIS BOX, BY ORDER", unrestored with original chocolate and cream paintwork. - Sold for £420 Lot 64 A GWR Train Describer (Sending Instrument), from the Bristol Power Box, a circular dial with brass surround divided into segments indicating Malago, St Philips, North Somerset, Radstock, Bath, Badminton, South Wales, Henbury, Dr Days, LMS etc. It has a centre and upper commutator and an ivorine plate "Middle to East Box" and is in fine original condition.
