Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 14 July 2007

Lot 139 An SR Brass Cabside Number Plate "SOUTHERN RAILWAY, 1205", from a South Eastern Railway Class F 4-4-0 express tender engine designed by James Stirling and built at Ashford Works in 1883, SER No 205, the first of the F1 Class, always known to railwaymen as the "Jumbos". It was substantially rebuilt by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway in 1908 and re-classified as Class F1. It was re-numbered 1205 in SR days but just failed to make it to BR, being withdrawn in 1947. The engine had an interesting history; in its early days it was one of its Class chosen to work the crack Folkestone and Dover Continentals; in March 1898 it was involved in a crash at St Johns in dense fog with fatalities while hauling the "Hastings Car Train"; and, during the second world war, in November 1941 it was one of nine F1s loaned to the LMS, first at Gloucester and then Peterborough, and, on return to the SR in September 1944, it was allocated to Stewarts Lane. Cast brass oval, 13_"x7_", the original paintwork lacquered, otherwise untouched.
 This lot sold for £720
