Lot 1 A Shedplate "3B", (Bushbury 1948-60), LMS pattern. A rare code only once before in auction, nearly twenty years ago, from the home of the array of "Jubilees" which regularly worked the Wolverhampton to Euston expresses. The front repainted, the back in original sooty condition. - Sold for £340

Lot 2 A Smokebox Numberplate "60093", from the LNER Gresley Class A3 4-6-2 "CORONACH" built at Doncaster, Works No 1703, in December 1928, original LNER number 2747, renumbered 93 in July 1946. It was allocated new to Doncaster but then moved around to Kings Cross, back to Doncaster, on to Haymarket before in January 1941 settling down at its long term home, Carlisle Canal, where it was to remain for the rest of its working life until official withdrawal in April 1962 and cutting up at Doncaster Works the following month. During its long stay at Carlisle Canal, "Coronach" was a regular performer over the gruelling Waverley route from Carlisle to Edinburgh. It takes its name from the racehorse owned by Lord Woolavington which won two Classics, the Derby and St Leger, in 1926, so a very current name at the time it was given to this engine. Repainted long ago, minor damage at outside edge of right bolt hole, where the plate was burnt off. - Sold for £3400

Lot 3 An BR(E) dark blue Enamel Signal Box Nameboard "DONCASTER NORTH", (f/f), from the East Coast Main Line, 84"x10", white lettering with cream border, a few small face chips/repairs, excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £420

Lot 4 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "GORING-BY-SEA", (h/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's Brighton to Portsmouth coastal route. Good colour with a little mottling, excellent shine, three small face chips filled and colour matched. - Sold for £520

Lot 5 A Locomotive Worksplate "HUDSWELL CLARKE & Co LTD RAILWAY FOUNDRY, LEEDS, No 1839, 1952, BUILT BY ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD, DARLINGTON", from a (GWR) 9400 Class 0-6-0PT No 8490 actually built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns, Works No 7460, as sub-contractors for Hudswell Clarke, whose own Works No was 1839. It went new in July 1952 to Duffryn Yard where, apart from a month at Neath, it spent all its short working life. Following withdrawal in October 1962, it was stored at Swindon Works before going to Hayes, Bridgend for cutting up in November 1963. Cast brass oval, 13"x8_", the front background repainted green, the back untouched. - Sold for £2100

Lot 6 A GCR oval China Dinner Plate by Copeland with "GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY COMPANY" title surrounding the blue coat of arms and "STEAM SHIPS" in scroll below, 11_"x9" with blue banding, excellent condition. - Sold for £190

Lot 7 An LNER cast iron Door Plate "PARCELS AND BOOKING OFFICE", a three line example from a small station where the offices were combined. The front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £190

Lot 8 An LNER enamel Lamp Tablet "SINCLAIRTOWN", from the North British Railway's Edinburgh - Aberdeen Main Line between Kirkcaldy and Thornton Junction. The station closed on the 6th October 1969. 16"x5", brown lettering and border on cream, extremely good condition, no face chips and excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £160

Lot 9 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 62742, DARLINGTON WORKS, 1932", from the LNER D49 "Hunt" Class 4-4-0 "THE BRAES OF DERWENT" built at Darlington in August 1932, original number 255, renumbered 2742 in 1946, becoming BR 62742. In BR days it was shedded at York and Leeds Neville Hill from where it was withdrawn in November 1958. After four months in store at Darlington Works, it was cut up there in February 1959. The engine takes its name, probably the best in the Class, from the Hunt which operated in the Durham and Shotley Bridge area. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", lightly cleaned, the loco's original number "255" clearly visible beneath the renumbering strip. - Sold for £1150

Lot 10 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "WADEBRIDGE-PADSTOW", (brass/steel), the final section of the London and South Western Railway's North Cornwall line from Okehampton, a picturesque route along the shores of the Camel Estuary. - Sold for £1200

Lot 11 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "SEAFORD", (f/f), the terminus of the LB&SCR branch from Lewes, also serving Newhaven Harbour, excellent colour and shine, minor surface wear but no face chips. - Sold for £980

Lot 12 A London and South Western Railway 8" dial Roundhead Wall Clock, with fusee movement. The original face marked "SR, JOHN WALKER, 1. SOUTH MOLTON ST, LONDON, 5486SW". The clock is complete with pendulum, key and side/base doors (with lock). The back is clearly stamped "5486 SW" and retains its brass fixings; a fine example the woodwork completely untouched and in full working order. - Sold for £1400

Lot 13 A Shedplate "50G", (Whitby 1949-59), a shed with an allocation of only five engines on closure in 1959, so an uncommon code. In ex loco condition (with BR receipt). - Sold for £720

Lot 14 A Great Western Railway cast iron Ground Frame nameplate "ST AUSTELL GROUND FRAME", from the Cornish main line station north east of Truro, 14_"x41/8", repainted chocolate and cream, the Swindon Works casting code "S0" within a recess on the back. The plate is accompanied by a framed GWR Telephone Circuit Card showing codes between St Austell Box and the Ground Frame, 5_"x6_", in fine original condition. - Sold for £300

Lot 15 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD. 1946, 25848", from an LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 built in October 1946, original No 1092, BR No 61092. In BR days it was shedded at Leicester GC and Colwick from where it was withdrawn in February 1966. After five months in store at Colwick, it was cut up at Birds, Long Marston the following July. White brass diamond, 13_"x5_", ex loco condition, other than the loco number chalked on the back. - Sold for £190

Lot 16 A Locomotive Worksplate "THE CLAYTON EQUIPMENT Co LTD, RECORD WORKS, HATTON, DERBY, ENGLAND, SERIAL No 4365/U73, DATE, 1963", from a BR Class 17 Bo-Bo No D8572 which was actually ex works in January 1964 and allocated new to Haymarket. It was withdrawn from Polmadie in June 1969 and cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in June 1970. Cast aluminium 7_"x3_", cleaned but with original green paintwork. - Sold for £780

Lot 17 A Smokebox Numberplate "73007", from a BR standard Class 5 4-6-0 built at Derby and allocated new to Perth in July 1951 where it became a regular performer on Glasgow-Perth-Aberdeen expresses including the "Granite City" and "Saint Mungo". When its main duties were dieselised, it remained on the Scottish Region, moving in June 1964 to Grangemouth and in October 1965 to Stirling from where it was withdrawn the following March, to be cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw in the June. The plate is unrestored. - Sold for £540

Lot 18 An LMS Hawkseye Sign "FENNY COMPTON", from the Stratford upon Avon and Midland Junction Railway which closed to passengers on the 7th April 1952 and completely in 1964/65. The station was renamed Fenny Compton West in 1948, to differentiate it from the GWR Station close by on the Banbury - Leamington route, however the new suffix was not applied to the signs, as this example is in its original LMS black and yellow, with reflective glass coating; 55" long and just at it was removed. An example from this station has never been offered for sale before. - Sold for £2800

Lot 19 A Great Western Railway enamel Lamp Tablet "ROYAL OAK", the first station outside Paddington. White on black with top flange, 173/8"x3", original condition with excellent colour and shine and minor chipping. - Sold for £400

Lot 20 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "DOVERCOURT BAY", (h/f), from the Great Eastern Railway's Manningtree to Harwich branch and situated between the Parkeston Quay and Town Stations; excellent colour and shine, just one tiny chip on the first "R" touched in and the usual edge chips. - Sold for £740

Lot 21 A Locomotive Worksplate "GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY Co, MAKERS, DONCASTER, No 1550, 1922", from a GNR Class J23, LNER J50/2 Class, 0-6-0T built in December 1922, GNR No 227. It became LNER No 3227, was renumbered 8926 in 1946, becoming BR 68926. In BR days it was shedded at Doncaster, Immingham, Hornsey and back to Doncaster from where it was withdrawn in February 1962, to be cut up the same month at the nearby Works. Fully engraved brass oval, 12_"x7_", front polished, back untouched. - Sold for £600

Lot 22 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "MELTON MOWBRAY", (f/f), from the Midland Railway's Leicester to Peterborough route. Excellent colour and shine with just the usual minor chips repainted on the flange. - Sold for £690

Lot 23 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1959, 27888", from a BR Class 22 B-B No D6315 which entered traffic at Laira in January 1960 and was withdrawn from there in May 1971. After seven months in store at Marsh Junction, Bristol, it was cut up at BREL Swindon in January 1972. Cast brass diamond, 12_"x5_", the face cleaned and lightly polished, the back lightly cleaned but with plenty of signs of wear. - Sold for £420

Lot 24 A Great Western Railway Three Aspect brass collar Handlamp, the side clearly stamped "BRIDPORT, GWR", with its "HETHERINGTON" makers plate below; the lamp is complete and has a BR(W) burner. The Maiden Newton to Bridport branch closed on 5th May 1975. - Sold for £130

Lot 26 A Southern Railway Locomotive Regulator Handle, from a Battle of Britain Class Bulleid Pacific 34073 "249 SQUADRON", chromed steel, 29" long with spring catch and mounted in a pivot fixing on a polished wooden hardwood base (recovered from the desk top of Portsmouth & Southsea Parcels Office), with an engraved description plate. - Sold for £200

Lot 27 A "SOUTH EASTERN & CHATHAM RAILWAY COMPANIES MANAGING COMMITTEE" cast iron bridge restriction notice referring to locomotives not crossing the bridge. Rectangular with rounded corners, 30"x18", primered. - Sold for £40

Lot 28 A G.W.R. Enamel Plate "VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS IN AID OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY WIDOW'S & ORPHANS BENEVOLENT FUND", white lettering and border on blue, 61/8"x5", a chip around the lower right screw hole otherwise excellent condition. The plate would have been fitted to the front of a collection box and a small _" slot to the right of the sign would have accommodated the key to the lock. - Sold for £380

Lot 29 A Locomotive Worksplate "MANNING, WARDLE & Co LTD, 1942, LEEDS, 1918", from a 0-6-0ST O/C which was ex Works in July 1918 and originally Inland Waterways & Docks No 31. It later moved to Partridge Jones at Abersychan where it was named "Blaenserchan". After becoming National Coal Board property in 1947, it was rebuilt by 1952 using some parts from sister engine Manning Wardle No 1935. Early in 1961 it went to Tredegar Central Workshops for repair and then to Hafodyrynys from April 1962 until July 1965 when it moved to Tirpentwys Colliery, Pontypool where it was named "Sir Dafydd" and scrapped on site in November 1968. Cast brass oval, 11"x6_", front background repainted red, back untouched. - Sold for £1150

Lot 30 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "CORTON", (h/f), from the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Line (GER & M&GN JT), between Coke Ovens Junction (Lowestoft) and Yarmouth Beach. When the Beach station closed in 1959 services were diverted to South Town. The line finally closed on 4th May 1970. This is the only totem known to have survived from the station. It was previously sold in 1991. Excellent colour and shine, a few surface marks and one chip repair at the base of the lower panel. - Sold for £1200

Lot 31 A Great Western Railway Silver Plated 1_ Pint Coffee Pot with the "DINING CAR" garter surrounding the company's monogram. A classic design with tall body, swirling handle and long curved spout, excellent condition. - Sold for £170

Lot 32 A BR(M) quad royal Poster "MANCHESTERS NEW STATION, The New Piccadilly Station", by Claude Buckle, 1960, a dramatic view of the frontage with contemporary road vehicles. Rolled and in excellent condition other than a few minor edge nicks. - Sold for £130

Lot 33 A North Eastern Railway Tyers Permissive Block Instrument indicating "Train On Line/Line Closed/Line Clear", the positions repeated below within a glazed brass aperture above the commutator, excellent original condition. - Sold for £130

Lot 34 An LMS Enamel Lamp Tablet "LINCOLN", from "St Marks" Station, black on yellow, 17"x4_", good colour, fair shine, edge chips repainted and chips around two fixing holes similarly treated, the top tip of the first letter affected. - Sold for £380

Lot 35 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside Numberplate "3718", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in February 1937 and allocated new to Duffryn Yard where it spent the whole of its working life, being withdrawn from there in May 1962. After a period in store at its home shed, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in the October. The plate has been repainted long ago. - Sold for £440

Lot 36 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet, "EXMOUTH - LITTLEHAM", (brass/steel), from the London and South Western Railway's Sidmouth Junction to Exmouth branch line, which closed on the 6th March 1967, the section included an impressive brick viaduct of considerable length which crossed the north of Exmouth on a long curve, now sadly demolished. - Sold for £640

Lot 37 A Pullman Car Co, Menu Holder, comprising a 2" diameter weighted base, inscribed "PULLMAN" and an oval panel above with spring clip, the front "BASS & Co PALE ALE" with an enamelled red triangle, excellent condition. - Sold for £180

Lot 38 An LNER cast iron Seatback Plate "CHATTERIS", from the Great Eastern Railway March to St Ives branch, which closed on the 6th March 1967. 32" long, the front repainted white on green, the back in original condition with old paint - Sold for £410

Lot 39 A Smokebox Numberplate "5175" from a GWR 5101 Class 2-6-2T built at Swindon in January 1931 and allocated new to Stourbridge. It finished its GWR days at Leamington Spa where it remained until moving in 1952 to Laira from where it was withdrawn in April 1961. It was cut up at Swindon Works two months later. The plate has probably been repainted. - Sold for £480

Lot 40 A BR(S) dark green enamel sign "TAXIS, PLEASE QUEUE OTHER SIDE", (f/f), 30"x18", loss of shine and a few small neatly matched face chips, the "instruction" in a panel in reverse colours. - Sold for £80

Lot 41 A Liverpool Overhead Railway Signal Box Diagram "DINGLE STATION, THE RAILWAY SIGNAL Co LTD, FAZAKERLEY LIVERPOOL, 14/8/1929", a coloured diagram showing the Island platform and including details of track circuits, tunnel and tunnel roof signals etc, 46"x16_", rolled. - Sold for £150

Lot 42 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "BOURNEMOUTH WEST", (f/f), from the town's LSWR terminus, famously used by Somerset and Dorset line trains from Bath and closed on the 4th October 1965. Excellent colour and shine; a couple of small edge chips, just into the green. - Sold for £1200

Lot 43 A Shedplate "6B", (Mold Junction 1948-66), an LMS pattern plate with an exceptionally large "B", Repainted long ago. - Sold for £150

Lot 44 A Single Line Key Token "HERTFORD NTH - WELWYN GARDEN CITY", (chromed steel, inscription on brass plate), from the Great Northern Railway branch which joined the GER route to Broxbourne. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 18th June 1951, with the route closing in 1966 west of Hertford East Junction. The token has a copper loop attached which carries a small key, possibly for a ground frame or crossing gate, and two circular cutouts in the head. - Sold for £280

Lot 45 A Locomotive Worksplate "LMS, REBUILT 1925, DERBY". Engines rebuilt that year with type G6 or G7 Belpaire boilers were all Midland Railway 1873 Class 0-6-0s, MR Nos 27XX, becoming LMS Nos 37XX. Some survived into BR days, numbered in the 437XX series. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", unrestored, without paint, small stress fracture at right bolt hole. - Sold for £100

Lot 46 A Carriage Print "EILEAN DONAN CASTLE, LOCH DUICH, WESTERN HIGHLANDS", by Kenneth Steel. A dramatic view of the famous landmark situated south of Kyle of Lochalsh, minor marks on border, original style frame. - Sold for £160

Lot 47 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BRUSH, HAWKER SIDDELEY, BRUSH ELECTRICAL MACHINES, LOCOMOTIVES No 920, 1990", from a BR Class 60 Co-Co No 60018 ex Works in September 1990 and named "Moel Siabod" the following month. It was allocated new to Thornaby and its nameplates were removed in May 1997. Named after a mountain in the Cambrian range near Betws-y-Coed. Engraved aluminium rectangle 9_"x6", ex loco condition. - Sold for £360

Lot 48 A Cast iron Notice "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY, NOTICE, HYDRAULIC CAPSTANS...." with five paragraphs of text outlining instructions for use and safety precautions, 22"x24", unrestored. - Sold for £120

Lot 49 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "BEARSDEN", (f/f), from the North British Railway's Westerton to Milngavie branch, north west of Glasgow, excellent colour and shine, one chip repair above "B", the letters unaffected. - Sold for £400

Lot 50 A BR(E) dark blue Enamel Doorplate "STATION MANAGER", (f/f), a short lived title introduced after "Station Master" ceased to be used and before the Area Manager system was developed. Excellent colour and shine, a couple of minor marks on the face, the back still with its delivery label attached "To Bishops Stortford Station". - Sold for £300

Lot 51 A Locomotive Tenderplate "BR1, 857, 1953", from the 4250 gallon tender paired with the BR Standard Class 7 "Britannia" 4-6-2 No 70038 "Robin Hood" built at Crewe and allocated new to Stratford in January 1953. Its later sheds were Norwich, March, Immingham, Carlisle Upperby and finally Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in August 1967. After five months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at McWilliams, Shettleston in February 1968. Cast iron, 8"x5_", the front repainted blue on white, the back silver undercoat with pitted rust. - Sold for £260

Lot 52 A BR(M) maroon enamel Station Direction Sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, STOCKPORT EDGELEY STATION", (f/f), with left handed arrow, from a principal station south of Manchester on the main lines to Crewe and Stoke. Excellent colour and shine, rim chips and one tiny face chip otherwise an excellent example. - Sold for £700

Lot 53 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "TRAIN ARRIVALS FROM, TIME DUE, PLATFORM No, MINUTES LATE", 72"x6_", excellent colour and shine. The sign would have been in a wooden frame, above a blackboard and used at one of the larger main line stations. - Sold for £240

Lot 54 A Locomotive Nameplate "BRAUNTON", with its matching "WEST COUNTRY CLASS" Scroll, from the Southern Railway Bulleid "Light Pacific" 4-6-2 built at Brighton in November 1946, original number 21C146, becoming BR No 34046. It was allocated new to Exmouth Junction, but initially on loan to Salisbury, and moved to Brighton in 1951. In February 1959 it was rebuilt, involving the removal of the distinctive air-smoothed casing and other Bulleid extravaganza, and allocated to Bournemouth where it spent the remainder of its working life until withdrawal in October 1965. After about four months stored at Bournemouth shed, it was moved to Barry Docks from where it was rescued by preservationists with a view to restoration for use on a heritage railway. Eventually it was purchased by the West Somerset Railway Association and moved to Bishops Lydeard. It is currently undergoing restoration at Williton Works on the West Somerset Railway and is expected to be in running order later in 2008. The nameplate 63_" long, repainted over the original paintwork. - Sold for £14000

Lot 55 A Locomotive Worksplate "KERR, STUART & Co LTD LONDON & STOKE, No 4334, 1925", from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 original No 4084, becoming BR 44084. A long time Saltley engine, it was withdrawn from there in December 1959, although it had already been stored since the previous February at Bournville where it remained until April 1960, then being cut up at Doncaster Works the following month. Cast brass oval, 13"x6_", the front background repainted maroon, the back untouched. - Sold for £490

Lot 56 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Signal Box Nameboard "HIGHTOWN", from the Southport to Liverpool route, just south of Formby. 55"x10_", cast letters on wood with beading, the front repainted. - Sold for £160

Lot 57 A Union Castle Ships Telegraph, within brass surround, cast case and brass handle and indicator, the enamel face plate reads "CHADBURNS (SHIP) TELEGRAPH Coy Ltd, LIVERPOOL, GLASGOW, NEWCASTLE, BELFAST, LONDON - AHEAD/ASTERN, FULL, HALF, SLOW, STAND BY, STOP, FINISHED WITH ENGINES, SLOW, HALF, FULL", 14" diameter, incorporating bell, excellent condition. (see Lot 155) - Sold for £250

Lot 58 A London Brighton and South Coast Railway enamel plate "GROOMBRIDGE", from the Brighton Station train departure board, 12"x_", blue on white, edge chips restored and a chip on the "O's". The station was on the Eridge to Tunbridge Wells route; these Brighton examples are rarely seen, compared to those from the London Termini. - Sold for £110

Lot 59 A Great Western Railway brass case Pressure Gauge from a ROD Number "3044", showing 0-80 1bs per square inch, the engraved face marked "BOURDONS PATENT PRESSURE GAUGE, GWR", 6" diameter, including backplate with "GWR" stamped on the front rim and the loco number on the back. - Sold for £40

Lot 60 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "SLEAFORD", (h/f), from the GN & GE station in Lincolnshire, junction for the routes to Lincoln, Boston, Spalding, Bourne and Grantham. Excellent colour and shine, two small face chips below the "A" repainted, one on the white line, the usual edge chips, just into the blue in places. - Sold for £580

Lot 61 A Shipbuilders Name Plate "WERF GUSTO, FIRM A.F.SMULDES, SCHIEDAM - HOLLAND, No 489 1922". Werf Gusto were based at Schiedam Shipyard, Rotterdam, Holland. Cast brass, 15_"x9_", with polished lettering and reddish brown background. The plate is believed to come from a crane ship named "Titan". - Sold for £70

Lot 62 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 67661, DONCASTER WORKS, 1936", from a LNER V1 Class 2-6-2T built at Darlington, Works No 1844, in October 1936, original No 2899, renumbered 7661 in 1946, becoming BR 67661. It was rebuilt in February 1959 with a higher pressure boiler and reclassified as Class V3. It spent almost all its BR days at Parkhead working Glasgow suburban services before finishing its days at Hurlford. It was withdrawn in February 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works two months later. Cast brass oval 9"x5", cleaned and the front repainted green. - Sold for £260

Lot 63 A Great Western Railway Signal Box Nameboard "SHIRLEY SIGNAL BOX", from the Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon route. Cast iron, 65_" long, repainted, a chip from one corner. - Sold for £740

Lot 64 A Diesel Locomotive Bogie Plate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, BOGIE No 800/99, 1961" from a BR Class 43 "WARSHIP" diesel hydraulic locomotive. Locos built by North British in 1961 were D840 and 843-58. Cast brass diamond, 6"x25/8", cleaned and the background repainted black. - Sold for £520

Lot 65 A wooden and canvas Ambulance Department Stretcher, the side clearly marked "GW & GC RLYs, PRINCES RISBORO, 5-1-10". The woodwork and inscription in excellent condition, a little wear to canvas. - Sold for £30

Lot 66 A cast iron notice "L.N.E.R, THIS WATER TO BE USED FOR DRINKING PURPOSES", 10_"x5_" with rounded corners, the front repainted, the back partially so. - Sold for £150

Lot 67 A Makers Plate "SUPER-SENTINEL STEAM WAGON MAKERS, THE SENTINEL WAGON WORKS LIMITED, SHREWSBURY, IN ALL CORRESPONDENCE MENTION WAGON No 7969", from a Sentinel type DG6 steam road wagon, a double geared 6-wheeler fitted with a side tipping body. Dyke was a contractor who operated a number of Sentinel wagons over the years and no subsequent owners are recorded. Lot 68 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "ROUGHTON ROAD JUNC - OVERSTRAND", (alloy), from the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Line (GER & M & GN) which ran from Runton West Junction (Cromer) to North Walsham, this section of the route closed completely on the 7th April 1953, with the line south to Mundesley on Sea. The Mundesley to North Walsham section remained in use until 1964. A lovely old tablet, hand cut lettering and a surprising survivor. - Sold for £250

Lot 71 A Single Line Key Token "HARTLEBURY Jc - STOURPORT ON SEVERN-S", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway Bewdley to Hartlebury route which provided a southern access to the Severn Valley and Cleobury Mortimer routes. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 5th January 1970 and the line north to Bewdley closed completely; freight continued on the remaining part of the route until 1980. - Sold for £400

Lot 73 A Locomotive Worksplate "BLACK HAWTHORN & Co, ENGINEERS, GATESHEAD ON TYNE, No 971, 1890", from a 0-6-0ST O/C which went new to Holmside & South Moor Collieries Ltd at Craighead Colliery where it was named "Craighead". It had been rebuilt by Hawthorn Leslie by 1911. It became National Coal Board property in January 1947 when it was numbered "NCB 38" but denamed, and sent to Morriston Busty Colliery. Lot 76 A Brass Cabside Numberplate "MASHONALAND RAILWAY, 111", from a Mashonaland Railway 3ft 6ins gauge Class 9 4-8-0 built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 21714, in 1917 and later rebuilt to Class 9B. It was taken over by Rhodesian Railways in 1949 with the same number and withdrawn in 1972. Cast brass oval, 19_"x13", cleaned and the front repainted red. - Sold for £380

Lot 77 A Mashonaland Railway smokebox roundel "MR" as attached from 1910 up to about the late 1930s. Probably from a 12th Class 4-8-2 but other classes may possibly have had these. The MR was a railway financed separately from the Rhodesian Railways although operational control was vested in the RR which took over complete control in 1937, although not formally merged until 1949. Cast brass 11" diameter, the front polished and repainted red, the back untouched other than being marked "R98.80". - Sold for £360

The numbers repainted, otherwise completely untouched, with original black paintwork (a 1963 Doncaster Sales Receipt accompanies this lot). - Sold for £600

It was allocated new to Reading, finished its GWR days at Croes Newydd and went later to Oswestry, Landore, Goodwick and Gloucester from where it was withdrawn in June 1959. Following periods in store at Swindon Works and Barry Docks, it was cut up at Woodhams, Barry by November 1960. The front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £2800

Lot 106 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COY LTD, HYDE PARK WORKS, GLASGOW, 1936, No 24311", from a LMS Class 4P 2-6-4T original No 2555, becoming BR 42555. A long time Rose Grove engine, it later moved to Wigan and then Bolton from where it was withdrawn in May 1965. After a period in store at Bolton, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge the following August. Circular engraved brass, 6_" diameter, unrestored. - Sold for £500

Lot 107 An LNER White Enamel Bucket, with company initials in blue on each side, the base rim is marked "PROPERTY OF LNER REFRESHMENT DEPT" on one side and "NOT TO BE REMOVED" on the other. Lot 109 A Smokebox Numberplate "45710", from the LMS "Jubilee" Class 4-6-0 "IRRESISTIBLE" built at Crewe in June 1936, Works No 308, LMS No 5710. A long-time Newton Heath engine, it was withdrawn from there in June 1964 and, after four months in store at Gorton shed, cut up at Central Wagon Co, Ince, Wigan between October 1964 and February 1965. The engine takes its name from the Royal Navy battleship which entered service in 1898 and was mined in 1915 during the First World War. The front repainted, the back in original sooty condition.

Lot 110 An early road sign "B4194, BEWDLEY", with arrow to the left, 37"x18" with pointed left side and in original condition. The B4194 runs from Stourport on Severn through Bewdley to Kinlet, west of Highley, following The Severn Valley Railway. - Sold for £160

Lot 113 An East African Railways Brass Cabside Numberplate "1311", from a metre gauge 4-8-2T built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 27071, in 1953. The Class were later converted to 4-8-4Ts due to uneven weight distribution and were used for heavy shunting duties. 24_"x8_", ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £110

Lot 114 An Ivory Pass "PEMBROKE AND TENBY RAILWAY / DIRECTORS FREE PASS", oval 13/8x11/8". A rare example from a minor company whose line ran from Whitland to Pembroke Dock; it was absorbed by the GWR in 1897. - Sold for £460

Lot 115 A London and North Eastern Railway direction sign "LNER, STATION", with the company initials in the "winking eye" motif and a left handed feathered arrow. 19_"x10_", some edge chipping restored and small face chips similarly treated, nevertheless a rare example. - Sold for £270

Lot 116 A Midland Railway Mahogany Box, with engraved brass plate "RAIL SECTIONS AS USED AT HEARING OF CONCILIATION BOARD No 5, BEFORE CHAIRMAN SIR ROBERT ROMER OCTOBER 28th , 30th, 31st 1912", inside a wooden panel with ten cutouts, showing the profile of rails in 1839, 1840, 1850, 1857, 1865, 1870, 1875, 1879, 1884 & 1896, each with green regune backing and a brass plate screwed on with the year engraved. The box is 18"x13_" and 1_" deep, with brass hinges stamped "MR Co". It is obvious from its construction that is was produced as a display of the profiles and not to carry samples of the rail sections. We have been unable to discover any details of the case, though Romer was a prominent barrister of the time. - Sold for £80

Lot 117 A Locomotive Worksplate "L&NER, 3522, DONCASTER WORKS, 1911", from a Great Northern Railway Class J22, LNER Class J6, 0-6-0 built at Doncaster, Works No 1312, in September 1911, GNR No 522. It became LNER No 3522, was renumbered 4171 in 1946, becoming BR 64171. In BR days it was shedded at New England and Boston from where it was withdrawn in September 1961 and cut up at Gorton Works the following month. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", with renumbering strip, the face repainted and characters polished, the back untouched. - Sold for £280

Lot 118 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1960, No 27972", from a NBL Type 4 Class 43 B-B "Warship" No D843 "Sharpshooter" which was allocated new to Laira in January 1961 and withdrawn from Newton Abbot in May 1971. It was cut up at BREL Swindon in April 1971. The engine takes its name, one of the best in the Class, from the WWII minesweeper HMS Sharpshooter, famous for its activities around Scapa Flow and the Firth of Clyde. Cast aluminium diamond, 13_"x5_". The front cleaned and the background repainted, the back untouched with oxidization and rust deposits. - Sold for £1000

Lot 125 A Locomotive Worksplate "LMS, BUILT 1933, CREWE". Engines built that year were the first two "Princess Royal" 4-6-2s Nos (4)6200/1, "Patriot" 4-6-0s Nos (4)5517-9/23-4/29-32/36-41 and Stanier Class 5 2-6-0s Nos (4)2945-57/60/63, so a very good chance this is from one of the passenger classes. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", the face repainted, otherwise untouched. - Sold for £240

Lot 126 A Rhodesian Railways Brass Cabside Numberplate "194", from a Rhodesian Railways 3'6" gauge Class 12 4-8-2 built by North British Locomotive Co in 1927, Works No 23594, and condemned in 1976. Cast brass oval, 19"x12_", the front polished and the background repainted green, the back just lightly cleaned. The plate is sold with matching Rhodesian Railways smokebox roundel "RR" as attached from 1910 onwards to differentiate from MR & BEIT engines (see lots 77 and 127) although they often came from the same batches. Some of the 10th, 11A, 12th and 19th Class engines carried these and also Garratts of 14, 15, 16 and 20 Classes. Cast brass oval 11_" diameter, the background repainted black. The plate is mounted on a square wood block for display purposes. - Sold for £550

Lot 127 A Rhodesian Railways smokebox roundel "BRT" (Beit Railway Trust) in decorative monogram, as attached from 1910 to distinguish some engines which were originally supplied and financed separately and quite a rare plate. Lot 128 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "3864" from a 2884 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in December 1942 and allocated new to Swindon. Its later sheds were Laira, Newton Abbot, Severn Tunnel Junction, Neath and finally Ebbw Junction from where it was withdrawn in August 1965. After a brief time in store at Swansea East Dock, it was cut up at Birds, Morriston two months later. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £620

Lot 131 A Locomotive Nameplate "MEG MERRILIES", from the (LNER) Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60115, the second engine of the Class built at Doncaster in September 1948, Works No 2032. It was allocated new to Gateshead where it remained until moving to its only other shed, Copley Hill, in November 1960. It was withdrawn from there two years later and cut up almost immediately at Doncaster Works. One of the most resounding A1 names, it derives from a gypsy character in Sir Walter Scott's novel "Guy Mannering". The front of the plate is repainted blue, the back untouched with the names of other engines in the class with similar length plates visible from the wooden pattern. - Sold for £25000

Lot 132 A Smokebox Numberplate "60115", from the (LNER) Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 "Meg Merilees". The plate has been repainted over the original paintwork. (See previous Lot for locomotive history). - Sold for £4600

Lot 133 A BR(E) enamel sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, KIMBOLTON", (with totem either end), from the Midland Railway's Kettering to Huntingdon route, situated east of Thrapston. The station closed on the 15th June 1959, together with the route east to Huntingdon, freight continued to serve the station until 1963 when the line was cut back to Twywell. 51"x5_", excellent colour and shine, chips around top screw holes filed and colour matched to a high standard. - Sold for £300

Lot 134 A BR(W) chocolate & cream Totem Sign "EALING BROADWAY", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's Paddington to Reading main line. Good colour and shine, though discolouration to the cream, and some edge and minor face chips. This is an early example with a flange at the top only, it appears to be a development of the Western Region chocolate and cream lamp tablet and is probably one of the first examples to be installed. - Sold for £360

Lot 135 A Wartime quad royal Poster "ALL CLEAR FOR THE GUNS ON THE LINES BEHIND THE LINES", by Leslie Carr, a striking image of a passenger train standing at signals, with a freight train storming past. Folded with a bit of creasing at folds. - Sold for £230

Lot 136 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRITISH RAILWAYS, BUILT BY THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC Co LTD, VULCAN WORKS, 1966, No 3732/E392, Electrical Equipment By Associated Electrical Industries & The English Electrical Co Ltd", from a BR Class 86 25kv Bo-Bo No E3151 which entered traffic in April 1966 and became 86212 in September 1973. It was named "Preston Guild" on 8th May 1979 but new plates were fitted on 16th May 1992 adding the dates "1328-1992", both namings being carried out by the then current Mayor of Preston. It was originally going to be named "City of Preston" in 1979 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the granting of its borough charter in 1179, only for BR to discover it was not a city (it is now). It was placed in store at Immingham in November 2003 and was still there the following March. Cast aluminium 8_"x6_", ex loco condition with BR blue paintwork (flaked above the year). - Sold for £520

Cornbrook East and West Junctions are south west of Manchester Oxford Road, providing connections between the MSJ & AR and the CLC route to Liverpool. Lot 144 A Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT UNDER BRITISH LETTERS PATENT, MAKERS, SENTINEL (SHREWSBURY) LTD, SHREWSBURY, IN ALL CORRESPONDENCE MENTION LOCO No 9529", from a 4-wheeled chain driven steam locomotive, 100hp, originally ordered for stock in August 1950 but in April 1951 the order was transferred to the Sentinel agents, Thomas Hill (Rotherham) Ltd for sale to the North Western Gas Board at Warrington where it was numbered "LG No 4". In May 1968 it was sold Mr Morris of Helical Springs, Lytham St Annes who dismantled it for spares for Sentinel 9537 which he had acquired for preservation. The remains were sold for scrap in 1969. Lot 146 A Locomotive Worksplate "THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD, LONDON, No 2688/D449.1959, THE VULCAN FOUNDRY LTD, LOCOMOTIVE WORKS", from the BR Class 40 1Co-Co1 D232 which entered traffic at Crewe North in September 1959 and was named "Empress of Canada Canadian Pacific Steamships" in March 1961 after the 20,235 ton ocean liner. The nameplates were removed in about 1972 and the engine withdrawn in February 1981. It was cut up at BREL Swindon in April 1983. Chromed brass, 101/8"x4_", cleaned and the background repainted black, the brass exposed on the characters. - Sold for £420

Lot 149 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 2432, COWLAIRS WORKS, 1914", from a North British Railway Class J, LNER D30 "Scott" Class 4-4-0, "Quentin Durward", NBR No 423, LNER No 9423. It was renumbered 2432 in 1946, becoming BR 62432. In BR days it was shedded at Hawick on the Waverley route and was withdrawn from there in December 1958. After being stored with others of the Class at Bathgate until June 1959, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw between April 1959 and February 1960. The engine takes its name from the novel by Sir Walter Scott, the title character being a Scottish youth of high birth who was in France as a mercenary at the time of Louis XI. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", the front repainted. - Sold for £760

In BR days it was shedded at Salisbury, Bournemouth and Guildford from where it was withdrawn in December 1962 and was cut up at Eastleigh Works two months later. Lot 161 A London Brighton and South Coast Railway 10" dial Roundhead Wall Clock with chain driven fusee movement. The original face marked "SR, JOHN WALKER, 1 SOUTH MOLTON ST, LONDON, 848B". The clock is complete with pendulum key, side and base door (the latter with original brass lock), cast brass bezel, the back of the case clearly stamped "848B" and retains its brass fixings. Lot 162 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED KILMARNOCK, CALEDONIA WORKS No 349, 1941", from a 0-4-0DM 84hp supplied new in January 1941 to the Ministry of Defence and based at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Puriton, their No 2. In May 1957 it went to Abelson & Co (Engineers) Ltd, Sheldon, Birmingham and in April 1959 to Haunchwood Brick & Tile Co Ltd, Stockingford where it was named "Haunchwood". In June 1968 it moved to Kneeshaw Lupton & Co Ltd at Llysfaen Quarry, Llanddulas. In 1974 it was acquired for preservation by Mr DG Owen in Llandudno who de-named it and renumbered it 3211. Finally in March 1984 it went to the Colne Valley Railway and is still there. Cast brass oval 16_"x11_", the front repainted black, the back untouched. - Sold for £500

Lot 163 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside Numberplate "3677", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in June 1940 and allocated new to Didcot. It had moved to Slough at the end of its GWR days and its later sheds were Exeter, Bristol Bath Road, St Philips Marsh, Barrow Road and Gloucester. Right at the end, in the summer of 1965, it went to the Somerset & Dorset Joint Line at Bath Green Park before finishing its days at Oxford from where it was withdrawn in December 1965. After six months in store at Oxford, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in June 1966. The front repainted, back original condition. - Sold for £540

Its sheds were Colwick, Ardsley, Copley Hill, Wakefield and finally York from where it was withdrawn in May 1967. After seven months in store at York, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following December. Lot 171 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1964, SWINDON", from a BR Class 14 "Teddy Bear" 0-6-0. All were built at Swindon, the 1964 batch comprising D9500-24. All of this notably short-lived Class were withdrawn in less than five years, many being sold off for industrial use, preservation and export. Lot 172 A Single Line Key Token "GOXHILL - IMMINGHAM WEST JCTN", (brass). The key end is of an unusual configuration having two grooves cut in the centre of the head. It is mounted on a small wooden stand and is believed to have been presented to a signalman when the keys ceased to be used (although the stand bears no inscription). - Sold for £50

In BR days it was shedded at Ardsley and Retford from where it was withdrawn in September 1961 and cut up at Gorton Works the following month. It was transferred to Mozambique Railways in 1949 as their No 12 on the division of ownership of the Beira route and was noted still in service in 1974. Lot 179 A Great Western Railway cast iron Signal Box nameboard "BLEDLOW SIGNAL BOX" from the Princes Risborough to Oxford route. The station closed on the 7th January 1963, with through freight traffic lasting another four years, after which the section between Thame and Morris Cowley was lifted. Freight continued to Thame until 1991, though the box closed during the 1960s. 65_" long, unrestored with original paintwork. - Sold for £820

Lot 188 A Carriage Print "RIVER DEE AT CAMBUS O' MAY, ABERDEENSHIRE by Lance Cattermole", featuring the Ballater Line in the foreground and the suspension bridge over the River Dee, the print is in its original frame and has actually been used in compartment and, though perhaps a touch faded compared to unused examples, it is in good ex carriage condition. Although a few prints feature trains in the landscape, this is the only example we are aware of that shows a stretch of railway line close up. - Sold for £130

In BR days it was shedded at Grimesthorpe, then Saltley for ten years, Carnforth and Skipton from where it was withdrawn in March 1965. Lot 190 A Great Northern Railway 10" dial Dropcase Wall Clock with fusee movement, the original face marked "BR(E) 10398". The clock is complete with pendulum, key and side/base doors and spun brass bezel. The inside of the case is marked twice with the clock number, the woodwork has been cleaned and polished, working order. - Sold for £400

Lot 191 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "FELIXSTOWE TOWN - FELIXSTOWE BEACH", (brass/steel), from the Great Eastern Railway Felixstowe Pier branch. The branch to the "Beach" station closed to passengers in 1967 and in 1970 the spur from the Town station to the branch was closed, a new spur giving direct access from the Ipswich direction opening on the trackbed of the original route which had been closed in 1898. A lovely old example. GER brass tablets appear uncommon as the company generally used alloy examples. - Sold for £560

Lot 192 A North Eastern Railway Platform Lamp from Fyling Hall Station on the Whitby to Scarborough route, complete with copper top, glass, vessel burner and glass chimney and a replacement white panel bearing the station name in black lettering. Overall 27_" high. The line closed on the 8th March 1965. - Sold for £160

Lot 193 A Locomotive Worksplate "SIR W.G.ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & Co, (ENGINEERS) LTD, No 1257, 1935, SCOTSWOOD WORKS, NEWCASTLE - ON - TYNE", (with the company's crown, arm and hammer in centre), from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0, original No 5216, becoming BR 45216. In BR days it was shedded at Bank Hall and Rose Grove from where it was withdrawn in February 1966. After four months in store at Rose Grove, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh the following June. In May 1953 this engine was one of a number from various other regions temporarily transferred to the Southern Region following the short-term withdrawal of first the Merchant Navies and then the Bulleid Light Pacifics for examination of their axles. No 45216 was allocated to Nine Elms and worked services on the Bournemouth and Exeter routes before returning to Bank Hall after a couple of months in unfamiliar territory. Cast brass rectangle, 8_"x5", the top right bolt hole distorted, the left has corner absent. Ex loco condition other than the loco number chalked on the back of the plate. - Sold for £100

"Hawkseye" Target sign "KIRKBY", from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Liverpool to Manchester main line between Fazakerley Junction and Rainford Junction and the site of one of the LYR Water Troughs; 48" long and in lovely original condition, retaining its maroon paintwork on glass beading which is undamaged other than a small portion at the base. - Sold for £190

The engine almost certainly takes its name from the Royal Navy destroyer, HMS Druid, built in 1911 although other ships have also carried this name. Cast aluminium 31"x11", the front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £6400

It was renumbered 4294 in 1946, becoming BR 64294. A long time Gorton engine, it was withdrawn from there in September 1959 and cut up at the nearby Works the following month. Lot 214 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "8767", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in December 1933 and allocated new to Old Oak Common where it remained for thirty years before moving to Oxley, Stourbridge Junction and finally Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn in July 1966. It was cut up four months later at Cohens, Kettering. The front repainted long ago, the back in original condition. - Sold for £380

Lot 215 An experimental BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "GIRVAN", from the Glasgow and South Western Railway's Glasgow to Stranraer main line, situated on the coast between Maybole and Barrhill. Light blue perspex body of standard size, _" thick, with raised white lettering (no white border or lines). Fixing holes at each end and prominent marks on back from mounting bracket, plenty of dirt and brake dust around the sides of the lettering. Attached to the back are the original Collectors Corner circular labels, "Girvan Plastic Totem" and "Experimental Plastic Totem, only complete example", a rare opportunity. - Sold for £150

Lot 218 A Smokebox Numberplate "4090", from the GWR 4073 "Castle" Class 4-6-0 "DORCHESTER CASTLE" built at Swindon in February 1925 and allocated new to Old Oak Common. By the end of its GWR days it had moved to Laira and its later sheds were Penzance, Stafford Road and Old Oak Common, with stays towards the end at Landore, Carmarthen, Neath, Shrewsbury and finally Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn in June 1963. After a year in store at East Dock, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in June 1964. The engine takes its name from the castle which once stood in the north part of the county town of Dorset. The front repainted long ago. - Sold for £1800

Lot 219 A Locomotive Builders Plate "ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, 1960", from the BR Class 82 25kv Bo-Bo No 82007 built by Beyer Peacock, Works Nos 1028/7891. It entered traffic in January 1962 as E3053 and was renumbered 82007 in April 1974. It was withdrawn from Longsight in August 1983 and cut up at V Berry, Leicester in September 1984. Cast aluminium 18"x5", ex loco condition with BR blue paintwork on front. - Sold for £840

Lot 220 A Locomotive Worksplate and Tenderplate Set "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 60961 DARLINGTON WORKS 1942" and similar "7260", from an LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 built at Darlington in December 1942, original number 3673, renumbered 961 in 1946, becoming BR 60961. A York engine for the whole of its BR days, it was withdrawn from there in April 1965 and, after three months in store at York, cut up at Drapers, Hull the following July. It is unusual to find a pair of plates like this from the same engine offered together. Each cast brass oval, 9"x5". The front background repainted apple green and the characters and rim polished, the back of the loco plate untouched, the other lightly polished. (2) - Sold for £800

Lot 221 A Tyers No 1 Single Line Tablet "CROSS KEYS BRIDGE", (brass/steel), from the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. The swing bridge was at Sutton Bridge on the Spalding to Kings Lynn section. The bridge and the route eastwards closed on the 2nd March 1959, though freight continued to serve the town from the west until 1965. - Sold for £260

Lot 223 A Great Eastern Railway Pension Supplemental Fund Certificate. A colourful presentation featuring the company's coat of arms and vignettes of ship, locomotive, carriage, wagon, signals, also clasped hands, beehive (symbolising productivity) and a wolf walking away from a cottage door. The certificate is signed by Claud Hamilton and with its original frame measures 21"x27_". It was designed by W.Lucas of the GER Carriage Dept and printed at Stratford Works. It became National Coal Board property in January 1947 and later moved to Walton Colliery and in June 1965 to Park Hill Colliery, Wakefield. It was cut up by July 1966. The image is in brown with green background, rolled, minor defects in places and the back edge strengthened. This is believed to be part of a huge billboard display, illustrating the various aspects of the company's activities, though it is a fine image in its own right. - Sold for £55

Lot 232 A Locomotive Headboard "THE ABERDONIAN", as carried on the King's Cross to Aberdeen sleeping car service which was introduced in July 1927 and continued to run, titled, until May 1971. This early style of BR headboard was introduced in June 1950 and continued to be used until the Deltics took over from steam in the summer of 1962. Most frequently the service was entrusted to the A1 and A2 Class Pacifics. Cast aluminium with integral bracket to which the steel sprung clip is still attached, the front has been repainted blue some time ago, the back is black, overall 33_"x14", the lettering bears plenty of service marks, while the underside has the usual dents sustained when removing the headboard from the engine. - Sold for £1500

Lot 235 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED, CALEDONIA WORKS KILMARNOCK, No 1921, 1927", from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0, original number 4377, becoming BR 44377, one of only 25 of this large Class built by Barclay. A long time Stoke engine, it moved late on to Crewe South, Warrington, Workington and Bescot. Finally in May 1965 it joined several others of its Class as Works shunters at Crewe and with sister engine 44525 became the last of the 4Fs to be withdrawn in October 1966. After four months in store at Crewe Works, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull in February 1967. Cast brass oval, 9_"x7", the front repainted red with black outer border, the back untouched (the word "Limited" is in italic lettering). - Sold for £800

Lot 238 A Locomotive Nameplate "COUNTY OF STAFFORD", from the GWR 1000 "County" Class 4-6-0 No 1027 built at Swindon in March 1947 and allocated new to Westbury. Three years later it moved to West Wales where it spent most of its working life at Neyland, with brief spells late on at Bristol Bath Road, Shrewsbury and finally Swindon from where it was withdrawn in October 1963. After a period in store at Swindon Works, it was cut up at Coopers Metals, Sharpness the following June. This is the left-hand side nameplate which was fitted directly to the locomotive splasher and does not, therefore, have an extended backplate. The nameplate is 77" long. - Sold for £13200

Lot 239 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "EXTON", (f/f), from the London and South Western Railway Exeter to Exmouth branch line. The single platform station with only four totems was originally named "WOODBURY ROAD" and purported to serve the villages of Woodbury and Woodbury Salterton, some three to four miles away.It was renamed on the 15th September 1958 and is situated between Topsham and Lympstone, on the Exe Estuary, opposite the GWR main line just north of Starcross. Excellent colour and good shine, one chip repair on the upper white line and small face chips, all neatly matched in. - Sold for £500

Lot 240 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "DELABOLE - PORT ISAAC ROAD, (brass/steel), from the London and South Western Railway's North Cornwall Line from Okehampton to Padstow, which closed on the 3rd of October 1966. The tablet is stamped "Not In Use" as was the custom when such items were sold by the Exeter Central Signal and Telegraph Dept. - Sold for £540

Lot 241 A Locomotive Nameplate "THE QUEEN'S OWN HUSSARS", a cast aluminium plate incorporating the royal coat of arms at the left side, from HST power car No 43096 built at Crewe in July 1978 and paired with car No 43097 to make up set 254021. It was allocated to Heaton and named at Darlington Station on 14th May 1985 by HM The Queen Mother, Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment. The nameplates were removed in December 1987 during a repaint into "Swallow" livery and and were themselves repainted prior to intended re-fitting but were instead replaced by reflective nameplates with silver background. The power car is currently running on the East Coast Main Line, renumbered 43296 after refurbishment, and named "Stirling Castle". 49"x9". The back is in original condition with plenty of oxidization. - Sold for £1600

Lot 246 A Smokebox Numberplate "92074", from a BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 built at Crewe and allocated new to Doncaster in February 1956. It soon moved to Annesley where, with others of its Class, it worked the renowned "windcutters", as the loose coupled freight workings from the Nottinghamshire coalfield to Woodford Halse were usually known. It remained at Annesley until 1965 when it moved to Banbury, then to Croes Newydd and finally Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in April 1967. After four months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw the following August. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £780

Lot 252 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1961, SWINDON", from the BR Class 42 "Warship" D822 "Hercules" which actually emerged from Swindon Works some while earlier, in June 1960, and was allocated to Laira. It was withdrawn from the same shed in October 1971 and cut up at BREL Swindon the following February. No fewer than five Royal Navy ships bore this name but the locomotive was probably named after the dreadnaught battleship launched in May 1910. Cast aluminium oval, 10_"x6", the front repainted black, the back lightly cleaned and marked "D822"; there is some evidence of maroon paintwork on the rim. - Sold for £520

Lot 254 A Great Western Railway brass Cabside Numberplate "5084", from the 4073 "Castle" Class 4-6-0 "READING ABBEY" which was rebuilt in April 1937 from the 1922-built "Star" Class 4-6-0 No 4064 whose name it retained with the addition of the "Castle Class" appendage below the name. The rebuilt engine first entered service at Weymouth and finished its GWR days at Bristol Bath Road, later moving to Swindon and finally in 1955 to Old Oak Common where it remained until withdrawn in July 1962. After five months in store at OOC, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport the following December. The engine takes its name from the Benedictine Abbey founded by King Henry I in1121, some ruins of which remain in Forbury Gardens, Reading. The front repainted, the back in lovely original condition. - Sold for £5000

Lot 274 A Diesel Locomotive Nameplate "THOR", from BR Class 47 Co-Co No D1671 which was built at Crewe and entered traffic in March 1965 at Cardiff Canton where it received its "Thor" nameplates without ceremony the following September. On 17th December 1965 it was derailed near Bridgend and then run into by D6983, both locos being extensively damaged. It was stored in a siding adjacent to Bridgend station and condemned on 18th April 1966. Some re-usable parts, including both nameplates, were removed and the engine taken to the local scrap yard, RS Hayes, where it was cut up by September 1966, only the second Class 47 to be withdrawn and the first named example to go. The nameplates were taken to Bristol Bath Road and put on the next available engine in the series, D1677, on 29th August 1966. This second loco, also built at Crewe, entered traffic in April 1965 and carried the plates until September 1975. During this time the original black background of the nameplates was repainted red. D1677 became 47091 in March 1974, 47647 in February 1986, 47846 in November 1989 and 57308 in May 2003 under which guise it remains in service carrying the name "Thunderbirds Tin Tin". This is one of the original nameplates as evidenced by the smaller size of the fixing holes. The later replacement plates, fitted after April 1985, had larger holes to accommodate fixing screws. The plate is in totally ex loco condition with some damage to the right upper rivet hole and border. Three photos accompany the plate; a rare shot of D1671 at Bristol Bath Road, D1677 at Crewe Works and 47091 pre-1975. - Sold for £4800

Lot 276 A Pullman Car Company circular coat of arms with the name "CAR FINGALL" below, 85/8" diameter. The back marked in pencil with the name number and dimensions. These examples were fitted in place of the car's clocks which proved unreliable. The coat of arms comes from a first class Kitchen car built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. in 1924, it worked on The London & North Eastern and later the Southern Railway before being withdrawn in December 1963. It was sold to Lord Montague of Beaulieu for static display, it moved to the Isle of Wight Steam Centre in 1978 and to the Bluebell Railway in 1978/79 where it was restored to its original condition. - Sold for £400

Lot 279 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED, CALEDONIA WORKS, KILMARNOCK, No 361, 1942", from a standard War Department 0-4-0DM 153hp which went new to the WD in February 1942, WD No 70046. Details of its war service are not recorded but it was renumbered 826 in 1951 and in January 1952 was shipped to Suez. By March 1955 it had returned to the UK at Bicester Military Railway. It moved to West Hallam from November 1955 until July 1958 when it returned to Bicester. From about 1960 it was used by The British Army of the Rhine and renumbered 126, also acquiring the name (probably unofficial) "Arnie". On again returning to Bicester in January 1969 it was first stored and then repaired before going on loan to the Royal Navy at Gosport from November 1971 until March 1975 when it went back to Bicester and was eventually sold to Farthingstone Silos Ltd, Northampton in December 1978. Cast brass oval 16_"x11_", unrestored. The front unpainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £520

Lot 289 An S.N.C.F. "FLAMON" Locomotive Speed Recorder, with a substantial brass fronted case, indicators, needle and roll of paper for measurements. These instruments were manufactured at the Vaucanson Works and primarily used on the French Railways, though also in the U.K. and notably fitted to "Mallard" on its 1938 record breaking run. A fine example in excellent condition and a rarely seen item. - Sold for £200

Lot 290 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co LTD, 1059, No 27685, THE GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD", from a BR Class 21 Bo-Bo No D6104 which entered traffic at Hornsey in February 1959. It was withdrawn from Eastfield in December
