Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 19 January 2008To see a picture of a lot (where available), click on the lot number. Lot 1 A Shedplate "3B", (Bushbury 1948-60), LMS pattern. A rare code only once before in auction, nearly twenty years ago, from the home of the array of "Jubilees" which regularly worked the Wolverhampton to Euston expresses. The front repainted, the back in original sooty condition. - Sold for £340 Lot 2 A Smokebox Numberplate "60093", from the LNER Gresley Class A3 4-6-2 "CORONACH" built at Doncaster, Works No 1703, in December 1928, original LNER number 2747, renumbered 93 in July 1946. It was allocated new to Doncaster but then moved around to Kings Cross, back to Doncaster, on to Haymarket before in January 1941 settling down at its long term home, Carlisle Canal, where it was to remain for the rest of its working life until official withdrawal in April 1962 and cutting up at Doncaster Works the following month. During its long stay at Carlisle Canal, "Coronach" was a regular performer over the gruelling Waverley route from Carlisle to Edinburgh. It takes its name from the racehorse owned by Lord Woolavington which won two Classics, the Derby and St Leger, in 1926, so a very current name at the time it was given to this engine. Repainted long ago, minor damage at outside edge of right bolt hole, where the plate was burnt off. - Sold for £3400 Lot 3 An BR(E) dark blue Enamel Signal Box Nameboard "DONCASTER NORTH", (f/f), from the East Coast Main Line, 84"x10", white lettering with cream border, a few small face chips/repairs, excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £420 Lot 4 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "GORING-BY-SEA", (h/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's Brighton to Portsmouth coastal route. Good colour with a little mottling, excellent shine, three small face chips filled and colour matched. - Sold for £520 Lot 5 A Locomotive Worksplate "HUDSWELL CLARKE & Co LTD RAILWAY FOUNDRY, LEEDS, No 1839, 1952, BUILT BY ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD, DARLINGTON", from a (GWR) 9400 Class 0-6-0PT No 8490 actually built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns, Works No 7460, as sub-contractors for Hudswell Clarke, whose own Works No was 1839. It went new in July 1952 to Duffryn Yard where, apart from a month at Neath, it spent all its short working life. Following withdrawal in October 1962, it was stored at Swindon Works before going to Hayes, Bridgend for cutting up in November 1963. Cast brass oval, 13"x8_", the front background repainted green, the back untouched. - Sold for £2100 Lot 6 A GCR oval China Dinner Plate by Copeland with "GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY COMPANY" title surrounding the blue coat of arms and "STEAM SHIPS" in scroll below, 11_"x9" with blue banding, excellent condition. - Sold for £190 Lot 7 An LNER cast iron Door Plate "PARCELS AND BOOKING OFFICE", a three line example from a small station where the offices were combined. The front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £190 Lot 8 An LNER enamel Lamp Tablet "SINCLAIRTOWN", from the North British Railway's Edinburgh - Aberdeen Main Line between Kirkcaldy and Thornton Junction. The station closed on the 6th October 1969. 16"x5", brown lettering and border on cream, extremely good condition, no face chips and excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £160 Lot 9 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 62742, DARLINGTON WORKS, 1932", from the LNER D49 "Hunt" Class 4-4-0 "THE BRAES OF DERWENT" built at Darlington in August 1932, original number 255, renumbered 2742 in 1946, becoming BR 62742. In BR days it was shedded at York and Leeds Neville Hill from where it was withdrawn in November 1958. After four months in store at Darlington Works, it was cut up there in February 1959. The engine takes its name, probably the best in the Class, from the Hunt which operated in the Durham and Shotley Bridge area. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", lightly cleaned, the loco's original number "255" clearly visible beneath the renumbering strip. - Sold for £1150 Lot 10 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "WADEBRIDGE-PADSTOW", (brass/steel), the final section of the London and South Western Railway's North Cornwall line from Okehampton, a picturesque route along the shores of the Camel Estuary. - Sold for £1200 Lot 11 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "SEAFORD", (f/f), the terminus of the LB&SCR branch from Lewes, also serving Newhaven Harbour, excellent colour and shine, minor surface wear but no face chips. - Sold for £980 Lot 12 A London and South Western Railway 8" dial Roundhead Wall Clock, with fusee movement. The original face marked "SR, JOHN WALKER, 1. SOUTH MOLTON ST, LONDON, 5486SW". The clock is complete with pendulum, key and side/base doors (with lock). The back is clearly stamped "5486 SW" and retains its brass fixings; a fine example the woodwork completely untouched and in full working order. - Sold for £1400 Lot 13 A Shedplate "50G", (Whitby 1949-59), a shed with an allocation of only five engines on closure in 1959, so an uncommon code. In ex loco condition (with BR receipt). - Sold for £720 Lot 14 A Great Western Railway cast iron Ground Frame nameplate "ST AUSTELL GROUND FRAME", from the Cornish main line station north east of Truro, 14_"x41/8", repainted chocolate and cream, the Swindon Works casting code "S0" within a recess on the back. The plate is accompanied by a framed GWR Telephone Circuit Card showing codes between St Austell Box and the Ground Frame, 5_"x6_", in fine original condition. - Sold for £300 Lot 15 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD. 1946, 25848", from an LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 built in October 1946, original No 1092, BR No 61092. In BR days it was shedded at Leicester GC and Colwick from where it was withdrawn in February 1966. After five months in store at Colwick, it was cut up at Birds, Long Marston the following July. White brass diamond, 13_"x5_", ex loco condition, other than the loco number chalked on the back. - Sold for £190 Lot 16 A Locomotive Worksplate "THE CLAYTON EQUIPMENT Co LTD, RECORD WORKS, HATTON, DERBY, ENGLAND, SERIAL No 4365/U73, DATE, 1963", from a BR Class 17 Bo-Bo No D8572 which was actually ex works in January 1964 and allocated new to Haymarket. It was withdrawn from Polmadie in June 1969 and cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in June 1970. Cast aluminium 7_"x3_", cleaned but with original green paintwork. - Sold for £780 Lot 17 A Smokebox Numberplate "73007", from a BR standard Class 5 4-6-0 built at Derby and allocated new to Perth in July 1951 where it became a regular performer on Glasgow-Perth-Aberdeen expresses including the "Granite City" and "Saint Mungo". When its main duties were dieselised, it remained on the Scottish Region, moving in June 1964 to Grangemouth and in October 1965 to Stirling from where it was withdrawn the following March, to be cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw in the June. The plate is unrestored. - Sold for £540 Lot 18 An LMS Hawkseye Sign "FENNY COMPTON", from the Stratford upon Avon and Midland Junction Railway which closed to passengers on the 7th April 1952 and completely in 1964/65. The station was renamed Fenny Compton West in 1948, to differentiate it from the GWR Station close by on the Banbury - Leamington route, however the new suffix was not applied to the signs, as this example is in its original LMS black and yellow, with reflective glass coating; 55" long and just at it was removed. An example from this station has never been offered for sale before. - Sold for £2800 Lot 19 A Great Western Railway enamel Lamp Tablet "ROYAL OAK", the first station outside Paddington. White on black with top flange, 173/8"x3", original condition with excellent colour and shine and minor chipping. - Sold for £400 Lot 20 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "DOVERCOURT BAY", (h/f), from the Great Eastern Railway's Manningtree to Harwich branch and situated between the Parkeston Quay and Town Stations; excellent colour and shine, just one tiny chip on the first "R" touched in and the usual edge chips. - Sold for £740 Lot 21 A Locomotive Worksplate "GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY Co, MAKERS, DONCASTER, No 1550, 1922", from a GNR Class J23, LNER J50/2 Class, 0-6-0T built in December 1922, GNR No 227. It became LNER No 3227, was renumbered 8926 in 1946, becoming BR 68926. In BR days it was shedded at Doncaster, Immingham, Hornsey and back to Doncaster from where it was withdrawn in February 1962, to be cut up the same month at the nearby Works. Fully engraved brass oval, 12_"x7_", front polished, back untouched. - Sold for £600 Lot 22 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "MELTON MOWBRAY", (f/f), from the Midland Railway's Leicester to Peterborough route. Excellent colour and shine with just the usual minor chips repainted on the flange. - Sold for £690 Lot 23 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1959, 27888", from a BR Class 22 B-B No D6315 which entered traffic at Laira in January 1960 and was withdrawn from there in May 1971. After seven months in store at Marsh Junction, Bristol, it was cut up at BREL Swindon in January 1972. Cast brass diamond, 12_"x5_", the face cleaned and lightly polished, the back lightly cleaned but with plenty of signs of wear. - Sold for £420 Lot 24 A Great Western Railway Three Aspect brass collar Handlamp, the side clearly stamped "BRIDPORT, GWR", with its "HETHERINGTON" makers plate below; the lamp is complete and has a BR(W) burner. The Maiden Newton to Bridport branch closed on 5th May 1975. - Sold for £130 Lot 25 A Shedplate "32B", (Ipswich 1949-59), repainted over original paintwork. - Sold for £180 Lot 26 A Southern Railway Locomotive Regulator Handle, from a Battle of Britain Class Bulleid Pacific 34073 "249 SQUADRON", chromed steel, 29" long with spring catch and mounted in a pivot fixing on a polished wooden hardwood base (recovered from the desk top of Portsmouth & Southsea Parcels Office), with an engraved description plate. - Sold for £200 Lot 27 A "SOUTH EASTERN & CHATHAM RAILWAY COMPANIES MANAGING COMMITTEE" cast iron bridge restriction notice referring to locomotives not crossing the bridge. Rectangular with rounded corners, 30"x18", primered. - Sold for £40 Lot 28 A G.W.R. Enamel Plate "VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS IN AID OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY WIDOW'S & ORPHANS BENEVOLENT FUND", white lettering and border on blue, 61/8"x5", a chip around the lower right screw hole otherwise excellent condition. The plate would have been fitted to the front of a collection box and a small _" slot to the right of the sign would have accommodated the key to the lock. - Sold for £380 Lot 29 A Locomotive Worksplate "MANNING, WARDLE & Co LTD, 1942, LEEDS, 1918", from a 0-6-0ST O/C which was ex Works in July 1918 and originally Inland Waterways & Docks No 31. It later moved to Partridge Jones at Abersychan where it was named "Blaenserchan". After becoming National Coal Board property in 1947, it was rebuilt by 1952 using some parts from sister engine Manning Wardle No 1935. Early in 1961 it went to Tredegar Central Workshops for repair and then to Hafodyrynys from April 1962 until July 1965 when it moved to Tirpentwys Colliery, Pontypool where it was named "Sir Dafydd" and scrapped on site in November 1968. Cast brass oval, 11"x6_", front background repainted red, back untouched. - Sold for £1150 Lot 30 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "CORTON", (h/f), from the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Line (GER & M&GN JT), between Coke Ovens Junction (Lowestoft) and Yarmouth Beach. When the Beach station closed in 1959 services were diverted to South Town. The line finally closed on 4th May 1970. This is the only totem known to have survived from the station. It was previously sold in 1991. Excellent colour and shine, a few surface marks and one chip repair at the base of the lower panel. - Sold for £1200 Lot 31 A Great Western Railway Silver Plated 1_ Pint Coffee Pot with the "DINING CAR" garter surrounding the company's monogram. A classic design with tall body, swirling handle and long curved spout, excellent condition. - Sold for £170 Lot 32 A BR(M) quad royal Poster "MANCHESTERS NEW STATION, The New Piccadilly Station", by Claude Buckle, 1960, a dramatic view of the frontage with contemporary road vehicles. Rolled and in excellent condition other than a few minor edge nicks. - Sold for £130 Lot 33 A North Eastern Railway Tyers Permissive Block Instrument indicating "Train On Line/Line Closed/Line Clear", the positions repeated below within a glazed brass aperture above the commutator, excellent original condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 34 An LMS Enamel Lamp Tablet "LINCOLN", from "St Marks" Station, black on yellow, 17"x4_", good colour, fair shine, edge chips repainted and chips around two fixing holes similarly treated, the top tip of the first letter affected. - Sold for £380 Lot 35 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside Numberplate "3718", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in February 1937 and allocated new to Duffryn Yard where it spent the whole of its working life, being withdrawn from there in May 1962. After a period in store at its home shed, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in the October. The plate has been repainted long ago. - Sold for £440 Lot 36 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet, "EXMOUTH - LITTLEHAM", (brass/steel), from the London and South Western Railway's Sidmouth Junction to Exmouth branch line, which closed on the 6th March 1967, the section included an impressive brick viaduct of considerable length which crossed the north of Exmouth on a long curve, now sadly demolished. - Sold for £640 Lot 37 A Pullman Car Co, Menu Holder, comprising a 2" diameter weighted base, inscribed "PULLMAN" and an oval panel above with spring clip, the front "BASS & Co PALE ALE" with an enamelled red triangle, excellent condition. - Sold for £180 Lot 38 An LNER cast iron Seatback Plate "CHATTERIS", from the Great Eastern Railway March to St Ives branch, which closed on the 6th March 1967. 32" long, the front repainted white on green, the back in original condition with old paint - Sold for £410 Lot 39 A Smokebox Numberplate "5175" from a GWR 5101 Class 2-6-2T built at Swindon in January 1931 and allocated new to Stourbridge. It finished its GWR days at Leamington Spa where it remained until moving in 1952 to Laira from where it was withdrawn in April 1961. It was cut up at Swindon Works two months later. The plate has probably been repainted. - Sold for £480 Lot 40 A BR(S) dark green enamel sign "TAXIS, PLEASE QUEUE OTHER SIDE", (f/f), 30"x18", loss of shine and a few small neatly matched face chips, the "instruction" in a panel in reverse colours. - Sold for £80 Lot 41 A Liverpool Overhead Railway Signal Box Diagram "DINGLE STATION, THE RAILWAY SIGNAL Co LTD, FAZAKERLEY LIVERPOOL, 14/8/1929", a coloured diagram showing the Island platform and including details of track circuits, tunnel and tunnel roof signals etc, 46"x16_", rolled. - Sold for £150 Lot 42 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "BOURNEMOUTH WEST", (f/f), from the town's LSWR terminus, famously used by Somerset and Dorset line trains from Bath and closed on the 4th October 1965. Excellent colour and shine; a couple of small edge chips, just into the green. - Sold for £1200 Lot 43 A Shedplate "6B", (Mold Junction 1948-66), an LMS pattern plate with an exceptionally large "B", Repainted long ago. - Sold for £150 Lot 44 A Single Line Key Token "HERTFORD NTH - WELWYN GARDEN CITY", (chromed steel, inscription on brass plate), from the Great Northern Railway branch which joined the GER route to Broxbourne. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 18th June 1951, with the route closing in 1966 west of Hertford East Junction. The token has a copper loop attached which carries a small key, possibly for a ground frame or crossing gate, and two circular cutouts in the head. - Sold for £280 Lot 45 A Locomotive Worksplate "LMS, REBUILT 1925, DERBY". Engines rebuilt that year with type G6 or G7 Belpaire boilers were all Midland Railway 1873 Class 0-6-0s, MR Nos 27XX, becoming LMS Nos 37XX. Some survived into BR days, numbered in the 437XX series. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", unrestored, without paint, small stress fracture at right bolt hole. - Sold for £100 Lot 46 A Carriage Print "EILEAN DONAN CASTLE, LOCH DUICH, WESTERN HIGHLANDS", by Kenneth Steel. A dramatic view of the famous landmark situated south of Kyle of Lochalsh, minor marks on border, original style frame. - Sold for £160 Lot 47 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BRUSH, HAWKER SIDDELEY, BRUSH ELECTRICAL MACHINES, LOCOMOTIVES No 920, 1990", from a BR Class 60 Co-Co No 60018 ex Works in September 1990 and named "Moel Siabod" the following month. It was allocated new to Thornaby and its nameplates were removed in May 1997. Named after a mountain in the Cambrian range near Betws-y-Coed. Engraved aluminium rectangle 9_"x6", ex loco condition. - Sold for £360 Lot 48 A Cast iron Notice "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY, NOTICE, HYDRAULIC CAPSTANS...." with five paragraphs of text outlining instructions for use and safety precautions, 22"x24", unrestored. - Sold for £120 Lot 49 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "BEARSDEN", (f/f), from the North British Railway's Westerton to Milngavie branch, north west of Glasgow, excellent colour and shine, one chip repair above "B", the letters unaffected. - Sold for £400 Lot 50 A BR(E) dark blue Enamel Doorplate "STATION MANAGER", (f/f), a short lived title introduced after "Station Master" ceased to be used and before the Area Manager system was developed. Excellent colour and shine, a couple of minor marks on the face, the back still with its delivery label attached "To Bishops Stortford Station". - Sold for £300 Lot 51 A Locomotive Tenderplate "BR1, 857, 1953", from the 4250 gallon tender paired with the BR Standard Class 7 "Britannia" 4-6-2 No 70038 "Robin Hood" built at Crewe and allocated new to Stratford in January 1953. Its later sheds were Norwich, March, Immingham, Carlisle Upperby and finally Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in August 1967. After five months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at McWilliams, Shettleston in February 1968. Cast iron, 8"x5_", the front repainted blue on white, the back silver undercoat with pitted rust. - Sold for £260 Lot 52 A BR(M) maroon enamel Station Direction Sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, STOCKPORT EDGELEY STATION", (f/f), with left handed arrow, from a principal station south of Manchester on the main lines to Crewe and Stoke. Excellent colour and shine, rim chips and one tiny face chip otherwise an excellent example. - Sold for £700 Lot 53 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "TRAIN ARRIVALS FROM, TIME DUE, PLATFORM No, MINUTES LATE", 72"x6_", excellent colour and shine. The sign would have been in a wooden frame, above a blackboard and used at one of the larger main line stations. - Sold for £240 Lot 54 A Locomotive Nameplate "BRAUNTON", with its matching "WEST COUNTRY CLASS" Scroll, from the Southern Railway Bulleid "Light Pacific" 4-6-2 built at Brighton in November 1946, original number 21C146, becoming BR No 34046. It was allocated new to Exmouth Junction, but initially on loan to Salisbury, and moved to Brighton in 1951. In February 1959 it was rebuilt, involving the removal of the distinctive air-smoothed casing and other Bulleid extravaganza, and allocated to Bournemouth where it spent the remainder of its working life until withdrawal in October 1965. After about four months stored at Bournemouth shed, it was moved to Barry Docks from where it was rescued by preservationists with a view to restoration for use on a heritage railway. Eventually it was purchased by the West Somerset Railway Association and moved to Bishops Lydeard. It is currently undergoing restoration at Williton Works on the West Somerset Railway and is expected to be in running order later in 2008. The nameplate 63_" long, repainted over the original paintwork. - Sold for £14000 Lot 55 A Locomotive Worksplate "KERR, STUART & Co LTD LONDON & STOKE, No 4334, 1925", from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 original No 4084, becoming BR 44084. A long time Saltley engine, it was withdrawn from there in December 1959, although it had already been stored since the previous February at Bournville where it remained until April 1960, then being cut up at Doncaster Works the following month. Cast brass oval, 13"x6_", the front background repainted maroon, the back untouched. - Sold for £490 Lot 56 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Signal Box Nameboard "HIGHTOWN", from the Southport to Liverpool route, just south of Formby. 55"x10_", cast letters on wood with beading, the front repainted. - Sold for £160 Lot 57 A Union Castle Ships Telegraph, within brass surround, cast case and brass handle and indicator, the enamel face plate reads "CHADBURNS (SHIP) TELEGRAPH Coy Ltd, LIVERPOOL, GLASGOW, NEWCASTLE, BELFAST, LONDON - AHEAD/ASTERN, FULL, HALF, SLOW, STAND BY, STOP, FINISHED WITH ENGINES, SLOW, HALF, FULL", 14" diameter, incorporating bell, excellent condition. (see Lot 155) - Sold for £250 Lot 58 A London Brighton and South Coast Railway enamel plate "GROOMBRIDGE", from the Brighton Station train departure board, 12"x_", blue on white, edge chips restored and a chip on the "O's". The station was on the Eridge to Tunbridge Wells route; these Brighton examples are rarely seen, compared to those from the London Termini. - Sold for £110 Lot 59 A Great Western Railway brass case Pressure Gauge from a ROD Number "3044", showing 0-80 1bs per square inch, the engraved face marked "BOURDONS PATENT PRESSURE GAUGE, GWR", 6" diameter, including backplate with "GWR" stamped on the front rim and the loco number on the back. - Sold for £40 Lot 60 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "SLEAFORD", (h/f), from the GN & GE station in Lincolnshire, junction for the routes to Lincoln, Boston, Spalding, Bourne and Grantham. Excellent colour and shine, two small face chips below the "A" repainted, one on the white line, the usual edge chips, just into the blue in places. - Sold for £580 Lot 61 A Shipbuilders Name Plate "WERF GUSTO, FIRM A.F.SMULDES, SCHIEDAM - HOLLAND, No 489 1922". Werf Gusto were based at Schiedam Shipyard, Rotterdam, Holland. Cast brass, 15_"x9_", with polished lettering and reddish brown background. The plate is believed to come from a crane ship named "Titan". - Sold for £70 Lot 62 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 67661, DONCASTER WORKS, 1936", from a LNER V1 Class 2-6-2T built at Darlington, Works No 1844, in October 1936, original No 2899, renumbered 7661 in 1946, becoming BR 67661. It was rebuilt in February 1959 with a higher pressure boiler and reclassified as Class V3. It spent almost all its BR days at Parkhead working Glasgow suburban services before finishing its days at Hurlford. It was withdrawn in February 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works two months later. Cast brass oval 9"x5", cleaned and the front repainted green. - Sold for £260 Lot 63 A Great Western Railway Signal Box Nameboard "SHIRLEY SIGNAL BOX", from the Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon route. Cast iron, 65_" long, repainted, a chip from one corner. - Sold for £740 Lot 64 A Diesel Locomotive Bogie Plate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, BOGIE No 800/99, 1961" from a BR Class 43 "WARSHIP" diesel hydraulic locomotive. Locos built by North British in 1961 were D840 and 843-58. Cast brass diamond, 6"x25/8", cleaned and the background repainted black. - Sold for £520 Lot 65 A wooden and canvas Ambulance Department Stretcher, the side clearly marked "GW & GC RLYs, PRINCES RISBORO, 5-1-10". The woodwork and inscription in excellent condition, a little wear to canvas. - Sold for £30 Lot 66 A cast iron notice "L.N.E.R, THIS WATER TO BE USED FOR DRINKING PURPOSES", 10_"x5_" with rounded corners, the front repainted, the back partially so. - Sold for £150 Lot 67 A Makers Plate "SUPER-SENTINEL STEAM WAGON MAKERS, THE SENTINEL WAGON WORKS LIMITED, SHREWSBURY, IN ALL CORRESPONDENCE MENTION WAGON No 7969", from a Sentinel type DG6 steam road wagon, a double geared 6-wheeler fitted with a side tipping body. Dyke was a contractor who operated a number of Sentinel wagons over the years and no subsequent owners are recorded. Cast brass featuring a knight in armour in the centre with the warning "EVER WATCHFUL, ON THE ALERT", 5_"x9_", the front cleaned, the back untouched. - Sold for £520 Lot 68 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "ROUGHTON ROAD JUNC - OVERSTRAND", (alloy), from the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Line (GER & M & GN) which ran from Runton West Junction (Cromer) to North Walsham, this section of the route closed completely on the 7th April 1953, with the line south to Mundesley on Sea. The Mundesley to North Walsham section remained in use until 1964. A lovely old tablet, hand cut lettering and a surprising survivor. - Sold for £250 Lot 69 A Southern Railway enamel target Sign "MAIDSTONE BARRACKS", from the South Eastern Railway's Rochester to Paddock Wood route, an unusual layout with the name on two lines within the centre panel Although there is significant restoration, including lettering, this has been expertly undertaken. This is the first example to be offered for sale at auction or privately. - Sold for £500 Lot 70 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "SANDERSTEAD", (f/f), with black edge, from the LB & SCR route to Oxted, Uckfield and East Grinstead, situated between Riddlesdown and South Croydon. Excellent colour and shine, almost as good as they come. - Sold for £760 Lot 71 A Single Line Key Token "HARTLEBURY Jc - STOURPORT ON SEVERN-S", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway Bewdley to Hartlebury route which provided a southern access to the Severn Valley and Cleobury Mortimer routes. Passenger services were withdrawn on the 5th January 1970 and the line north to Bewdley closed completely; freight continued on the remaining part of the route until 1980. - Sold for £400 Lot 72 A Great Western Railway enamel sign "GWR PARCELS RECEIVED HERE, FOR ALL PORTS", double sided 18"x12", with red lettering and black shading on white, excellent colour and shine with a few professionally restored chip repairs, a fine example. - Sold for £320 Lot 73 A Locomotive Worksplate "BLACK HAWTHORN & Co, ENGINEERS, GATESHEAD ON TYNE, No 971, 1890", from a 0-6-0ST O/C which went new to Holmside & South Moor Collieries Ltd at Craighead Colliery where it was named "Craighead". It had been rebuilt by Hawthorn Leslie by 1911. It became National Coal Board property in January 1947 when it was numbered "NCB 38" but denamed, and sent to Morriston Busty Colliery. It was cut up in January 1966. It was taken over by Rhodesian Railways in 1949 with the same number and withdrawn in 1972. Cast brass oval, 19_"x13", cleaned and the front repainted red. - Sold for £380 Lot 77 A Mashonaland Railway smokebox roundel "MR" as attached from 1910 up to about the late 1930s. Probably from a 12th Class 4-8-2 but other classes may possibly have had these. The MR was a railway financed separately from the Rhodesian Railways although operational control was vested in the RR which took over complete control in 1937, although not formally merged until 1949. The numbers repainted, otherwise completely untouched, with original black paintwork (a 1963 Doncaster Sales Receipt accompanies this lot). - Sold for £600 Lot 82 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "CORBY", (f/f), from the Midland Railway Kettering to Manton (and Nottingham) route. The station closed on the 18th April 1966 (when the totems were removed), and reopened between 1987 and 1990. The route is still used for freight and diversions. It was allocated new to Reading, finished its GWR days at Croes Newydd and went later to Oswestry, Landore, Goodwick and Gloucester from where it was withdrawn in June 1959. Following periods in store at Swindon Works and Barry Docks, it was cut up at Woodhams, Barry by November 1960. It was withdrawn from Stratford in March 1971 and cut up at BREL Crewe the following December. Cast brass oval 107/8"x61/8" in ex loco condition with black paintwork. - Sold for £980 Lot 90 A 10" dial Roundhead Wall Clock, with fusee movement, the original face marked "BR(E), 13196", with side and base door, spun brass bezel and complete with its pendulum and key. A fine view of a Merchant Navy Class loco 35013 on the down train, just west of Tisbury and starting to climb to Semley Summit, much detail with the headboard, smokebox and nameplate clearly visible along with the roofboards on all twelve of the blood and custard coaches. The print is presented in an original style frame. - Sold for £350 Lot 104 A BR(S) double royal poster "CHICHESTER", by Stetson, a view of the Cathedral with tourists roaming outside, rolled with light folds. - Sold for £100 Lot 105 A Southern Railway green enamel Target Sign "WATERLOO", from the through platforms of the famous London Station, good colour though loss of shine and vertical marks to the right. The usual edge chipping present. - Sold for £750 Lot 106 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COY LTD, HYDE PARK WORKS, GLASGOW, 1936, No 24311", from a LMS Class 4P 2-6-4T original No 2555, becoming BR 42555. A long time Rose Grove engine, it later moved to Wigan and then Bolton from where it was withdrawn in May 1965. After a period in store at Bolton, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge the following August. Circular engraved brass, 6_" diameter, unrestored. - Sold for £500 Lot 107 An LNER White Enamel Bucket, with company initials in blue on each side, the base rim is marked "PROPERTY OF LNER REFRESHMENT DEPT" on one side and "NOT TO BE REMOVED" on the other. Complete with its wire handle with turned wood roller and a blue rim, very good condition with an odd minor chip. - Sold for £110 Lot 108 A Shedplate, "56B", (Ardsley 1956-65), repainted long ago. - Sold for £100 Lot 109 A Smokebox Numberplate "45710", from the LMS "Jubilee" Class 4-6-0 "IRRESISTIBLE" built at Crewe in June 1936, Works No 308, LMS No 5710. A long-time Newton Heath engine, it was withdrawn from there in June 1964 and, after four months in store at Gorton shed, cut up at Central Wagon Co, Ince, Wigan between October 1964 and February 1965. The engine takes its name from the Royal Navy battleship which entered service in 1898 and was mined in 1915 during the First World War. The front repainted, the back in original sooty condition. Lot 110 An early road sign "B4194, BEWDLEY", with arrow to the left, 37"x18" with pointed left side and in original condition. The B4194 runs from Stourport on Severn through Bewdley to Kinlet, west of Highley, following The Severn Valley Railway. - Sold for £160 Lot 111 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "LITTLEWORTH", (f/f), from the Great Northern Railway's Peterborough to Spalding route; the station closed on the 11th September 1961. Excellent colour and shine, one small face chip in top panel touched in and one edge chip at base, just into blue, a few light surface marks, otherwise a fine example, not offered at auction before. - Sold for £1550 Lot 112 A Cast Iron Notice "GW & GC Joint Railway, BEWARE OF TRAINS", unrestored lacking much paint. These signs were used on the route between Ashenden Junction and Northolt. - Sold for £100 Lot 113 An East African Railways Brass Cabside Numberplate "1311", from a metre gauge 4-8-2T built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 27071, in 1953. The Class were later converted to 4-8-4Ts due to uneven weight distribution and were used for heavy shunting duties. 24_"x8_", ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £110 Lot 114 An Ivory Pass "PEMBROKE AND TENBY RAILWAY / DIRECTORS FREE PASS", oval 13/8x11/8". A rare example from a minor company whose line ran from Whitland to Pembroke Dock; it was absorbed by the GWR in 1897. - Sold for £460 Lot 115 A London and North Eastern Railway direction sign "LNER, STATION", with the company initials in the "winking eye" motif and a left handed feathered arrow. 19_"x10_", some edge chipping restored and small face chips similarly treated, nevertheless a rare example. - Sold for £270 Lot 116 A Midland Railway Mahogany Box, with engraved brass plate "RAIL SECTIONS AS USED AT HEARING OF CONCILIATION BOARD No 5, BEFORE CHAIRMAN SIR ROBERT ROMER OCTOBER 28th , 30th, 31st 1912", inside a wooden panel with ten cutouts, showing the profile of rails in 1839, 1840, 1850, 1857, 1865, 1870, 1875, 1879, 1884 & 1896, each with green regune backing and a brass plate screwed on with the year engraved. The box is 18"x13_" and 1_" deep, with brass hinges stamped "MR Co". It is obvious from its construction that is was produced as a display of the profiles and not to carry samples of the rail sections. We have been unable to discover any details of the case, though Romer was a prominent barrister of the time. - Sold for £80 Lot 117 A Locomotive Worksplate "L&NER, 3522, DONCASTER WORKS, 1911", from a Great Northern Railway Class J22, LNER Class J6, 0-6-0 built at Doncaster, Works No 1312, in September 1911, GNR No 522. It became LNER No 3522, was renumbered 4171 in 1946, becoming BR 64171. In BR days it was shedded at New England and Boston from where it was withdrawn in September 1961 and cut up at Gorton Works the following month. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", with renumbering strip, the face repainted and characters polished, the back untouched. - Sold for £280 Lot 118 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1960, No 27972", from a NBL Type 4 Class 43 B-B "Warship" No D843 "Sharpshooter" which was allocated new to Laira in January 1961 and withdrawn from Newton Abbot in May 1971. It was cut up at BREL Swindon in April 1971. The engine takes its name, one of the best in the Class, from the WWII minesweeper HMS Sharpshooter, famous for its activities around Scapa Flow and the Firth of Clyde. Cast aluminium diamond, 13_"x5_". The front cleaned and the background repainted, the back untouched with oxidization and rust deposits. - Sold for £1000 Lot 119 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "SUDBURY - CHAPPEL", (alloy), from the Great Eastern Railway's Marks Tey to Sudbury branch. - Sold for £140 Lot 120 A BR(W) double royal Closure Poster "OKEHAMPTON - BUDE/HALWILL - WADEBRIDGE", listing stations to close and amendments to the replacement bus services, September 1966. Blue on white with black border, rolled with light folds. Notably a number of stations such as Delabole and Dunsland Cross here had the "Halt" suffix added. - Sold for £150 Lot 121 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "ARROCHAR & TARBET", (h/f), from the North British Railway's West Highland Line and situated on the dramatic shores of the Loch Lomond, a rarely seen totem compared to Ardlui, the next station. Faded, some careful repairs. - Sold for £1000 Lot 122 A Great Northern Railway semaphore brass cased distant signal repeater, with yellow arm on chromed post with finial, original paintwork to arm and face, though no glass, rim slightly out of true at upper right. - Sold for £90 Lot 123 A Glasgow and South Western Railway Silver Plated 1_ Pint Coffee Pot by Elkington and Co, 7" high with the company coat of arms prominently displayed on the side "G.&.S.W. RAILWAY HOTELS", excellent usable condition. - Sold for £180 Lot 124 A BR(NE) tangerine enamel Doorplate "LADIES ROOM", (flangeless), excellent colour and shine, no chips. - Sold for £180 Lot 125 A Locomotive Worksplate "LMS, BUILT 1933, CREWE". Engines built that year were the first two "Princess Royal" 4-6-2s Nos (4)6200/1, "Patriot" 4-6-0s Nos (4)5517-9/23-4/29-32/36-41 and Stanier Class 5 2-6-0s Nos (4)2945-57/60/63, so a very good chance this is from one of the passenger classes. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", the face repainted, otherwise untouched. - Sold for £240 Lot 126 A Rhodesian Railways Brass Cabside Numberplate "194", from a Rhodesian Railways 3'6" gauge Class 12 4-8-2 built by North British Locomotive Co in 1927, Works No 23594, and condemned in 1976. Cast brass oval, 19"x12_", the front polished and the background repainted green, the back just lightly cleaned. The plate is sold with matching Rhodesian Railways smokebox roundel "RR" as attached from 1910 onwards to differentiate from MR & BEIT engines (see lots 77 and 127) although they often came from the same batches. Some of the 10th, 11A, 12th and 19th Class engines carried these and also Garratts of 14, 15, 16 and 20 Classes. Cast brass oval 11_" diameter, the background repainted black. The plate is mounted on a square wood block for display purposes. - Sold for £550 Lot 127 A Rhodesian Railways smokebox roundel "BRT" (Beit Railway Trust) in decorative monogram, as attached from 1910 to distinguish some engines which were originally supplied and financed separately and quite a rare plate. Cast brass 22" diameter, the front polished and the back untouched. - Sold for £390 Lot 128 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "3864" from a 2884 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in December 1942 and allocated new to Swindon. Its later sheds were Laira, Newton Abbot, Severn Tunnel Junction, Neath and finally Ebbw Junction from where it was withdrawn in August 1965. After a brief time in store at Swansea East Dock, it was cut up at Birds, Morriston two months later. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £620 Lot 129 A Single Line Key Token "BLAENYCWM - BLAENGWYNFY EAST", (alloy), from the Rhondda and Swansea Bay route from Swansea to Treherbert, this section was for the lengthy Rhondda Tunnel; the route closed in 1968. - Sold for £280 Lot 130 An enamel advertising thermometer "TREAT YOURSELF TO THE BEST, CHEW MAIL POUCH TOBACCO", white/yellow on blue, 39"x9", (flanged), chips repaired at top and base fixings, otherwise fine with excellent colour and shine and the glass intact, from Ohio USA. - Sold for £90 Lot 131 A Locomotive Nameplate "MEG MERRILIES", from the (LNER) Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60115, the second engine of the Class built at Doncaster in September 1948, Works No 2032. It was allocated new to Gateshead where it remained until moving to its only other shed, Copley Hill, in November 1960. It was withdrawn from there two years later and cut up almost immediately at Doncaster Works. One of the most resounding A1 names, it derives from a gypsy character in Sir Walter Scott's novel "Guy Mannering". The front of the plate is repainted blue, the back untouched with the names of other engines in the class with similar length plates visible from the wooden pattern. - Sold for £25000 Lot 132 A Smokebox Numberplate "60115", from the (LNER) Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 "Meg Merilees". The plate has been repainted over the original paintwork. (See previous Lot for locomotive history). - Sold for £4600 Lot 133 A BR(E) enamel sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS, KIMBOLTON", (with totem either end), from the Midland Railway's Kettering to Huntingdon route, situated east of Thrapston. The station closed on the 15th June 1959, together with the route east to Huntingdon, freight continued to serve the station until 1963 when the line was cut back to Twywell. 51"x5_", excellent colour and shine, chips around top screw holes filed and colour matched to a high standard. - Sold for £300 Lot 134 A BR(W) chocolate & cream Totem Sign "EALING BROADWAY", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's Paddington to Reading main line. Good colour and shine, though discolouration to the cream, and some edge and minor face chips. This is an early example with a flange at the top only, it appears to be a development of the Western Region chocolate and cream lamp tablet and is probably one of the first examples to be installed. - Sold for £360 Lot 135 A Wartime quad royal Poster "ALL CLEAR FOR THE GUNS ON THE LINES BEHIND THE LINES", by Leslie Carr, a striking image of a passenger train standing at signals, with a freight train storming past. Folded with a bit of creasing at folds. - Sold for £230 Lot 136 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRITISH RAILWAYS, BUILT BY THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC Co LTD, VULCAN WORKS, 1966, No 3732/E392, Electrical Equipment By Associated Electrical Industries & The English Electrical Co Ltd", from a BR Class 86 25kv Bo-Bo No E3151 which entered traffic in April 1966 and became 86212 in September 1973. It was named "Preston Guild" on 8th May 1979 but new plates were fitted on 16th May 1992 adding the dates "1328-1992", both namings being carried out by the then current Mayor of Preston. It was originally going to be named "City of Preston" in 1979 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the granting of its borough charter in 1179, only for BR to discover it was not a city (it is now). It was placed in store at Immingham in November 2003 and was still there the following March. Cast aluminium 8_"x6_", ex loco condition with BR blue paintwork (flaked above the year). - Sold for £520 Lot 137 An LNER cast iron Doorplate "GENERAL WAITING ROOM", the front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £95 Lot 138 A Great Western Railway Tinplate General System Map, red, turquoise, black, white within original oak frame, overall 33_"x28", minor rust spots in places, though a reasonably good example, probably produced after WWI, certainly before 1925. - Sold for £50 Lot 139 A Southern Railway enamel Target Sign "RAVENSBOURNE", from the London Chatham and Dover Railway's Nunhead to Bromley route. Excellent colour and shine, minor edge chips including those by top far right and left screw holes. - Sold for £180 Lot 140 An Industrial Locomotive Nameplate "ANGLO-DANE", from a 0-4-0ST O/C built by Peckett, their type R2, Works No 1318, and supplied new in March 1913 to Tunnel Portland Cement Co at West Thurrock where it was named. Cornbrook East and West Junctions are south west of Manchester Oxford Road, providing connections between the MSJ & AR and the CLC route to Liverpool. The instrument is in good original condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 143 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "LYMINGTON - LYMINGTON JNC", (brass/steel), from the London and South Western Railway branch line to Lymington Pier which left the main line to Weymouth between Brockenhurst and New Milton. - Sold for £400 Lot 144 A Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT UNDER BRITISH LETTERS PATENT, MAKERS, SENTINEL (SHREWSBURY) LTD, SHREWSBURY, IN ALL CORRESPONDENCE MENTION LOCO No 9529", from a 4-wheeled chain driven steam locomotive, 100hp, originally ordered for stock in August 1950 but in April 1951 the order was transferred to the Sentinel agents, Thomas Hill (Rotherham) Ltd for sale to the North Western Gas Board at Warrington where it was numbered "LG No 4". In May 1968 it was sold Mr Morris of Helical Springs, Lytham St Annes who dismantled it for spares for Sentinel 9537 which he had acquired for preservation. The remains were sold for scrap in 1969. Excellent colour and shine with just one edge chip at the base, just into the colour. - Sold for £1300 Lot 146 A Locomotive Worksplate "THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD, LONDON, No 2688/D449.1959, THE VULCAN FOUNDRY LTD, LOCOMOTIVE WORKS", from the BR Class 40 1Co-Co1 D232 which entered traffic at Crewe North in September 1959 and was named "Empress of Canada Canadian Pacific Steamships" in March 1961 after the 20,235 ton ocean liner. The nameplates were removed in about 1972 and the engine withdrawn in February 1981. It was cut up at BREL Swindon in April 1983. It was renumbered 2432 in 1946, becoming BR 62432. In BR days it was shedded at Hawick on the Waverley route and was withdrawn from there in December 1958. After being stored with others of the Class at Bathgate until June 1959, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw between April 1959 and February 1960. The engine takes its name from the novel by Sir Walter Scott, the title character being a Scottish youth of high birth who was in France as a mercenary at the time of Louis XI. Engines built that year were all MR 2736 Class 0-6-0s Nos 240-54 and 2736-40, which became LMS Class 3F Nos 3765-84. Most survived into BR days numbered between 43765-84 but all had gone by 1961. Cast brass oval 10_"x6", the front repainted maroon, the back untouched with some chunks of crimson lake paint still attached. - Sold for £540 Lot 154 A Locomotive Worksplate "DUBS & Co, No 3513, GLASGOW LOCOMOTIVE WORKS, 1897", from a London & South Western Railway 700 Goods Class 0-6-0 ex Works in March 1897, LSWR No 690. It became SR E690, then 690 and BR 30690. In BR days it was shedded at Salisbury, Bournemouth and Guildford from where it was withdrawn in December 1962 and was cut up at Eastleigh Works two months later. Cast brass diamond, 13_"x5_", the front background repainted, the back pretty much untouched. - Sold for £620 Lot 155 A Union Castle Line Ships Compass in a substantial alcohol filled brass case, 9_" diameter, with pivot fixings at the sides, also with a small ships barometer of similar origin, by Reynolds and Wardale, 5_" diameter. The simulated wood case has a Thompson makers plate at the bottom and is complete with its "Up" & "Down" brass plates; excellent original condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 159 A Smokebox Numberplate "45026", from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0 built at Vulcan Foundry, Works No 4571, in 1934, LMS No 5026. In BR days its sheds were Springs Branch Wigan, Blackpool, Fleetwood, Rose Grove, Patricroft and finally Newton Heath. Following withdrawal, it was stored at Newton Heath for five months and cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in April 1966. The plate has been repainted over the original paintwork. - Sold for £600 Lot 160 A framed double royal Poster "LONDON & SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAYS, RIVERSIDE EXCURSIONS, Cheap Tickets Issued Daily From Stations On This Line, Waterloo and Suburban Stations", a full colour view of a couple boating, the gent with straw boater, the lady with parasol, Windsor Castle stands in the background, with yachts and a steamer on the river. At the top right the company's coat of arms; a superb example of the period presented in a good quality frame. - Sold for £500 Lot 161 A London Brighton and South Coast Railway 10" dial Roundhead Wall Clock with chain driven fusee movement. The original face marked "SR, JOHN WALKER, 1 SOUTH MOLTON ST, LONDON, 848B". The clock is complete with pendulum key, side and base door (the latter with original brass lock), cast brass bezel, the back of the case clearly stamped "848B" and retains its brass fixings. A fine example, the woodwork untouched and in full working order. - Sold for £1600 Lot 162 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED KILMARNOCK, CALEDONIA WORKS No 349, 1941", from a 0-4-0DM 84hp supplied new in January 1941 to the Ministry of Defence and based at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Puriton, their No 2. In May 1957 it went to Abelson & Co (Engineers) Ltd, Sheldon, Birmingham and in April 1959 to Haunchwood Brick & Tile Co Ltd, Stockingford where it was named "Haunchwood". In June 1968 it moved to Kneeshaw Lupton & Co Ltd at Llysfaen Quarry, Llanddulas. In 1974 it was acquired for preservation by Mr DG Owen in Llandudno who de-named it and renumbered it 3211. Finally in March 1984 it went to the Colne Valley Railway and is still there. Cast brass oval 16_"x11_", the front repainted black, the back untouched. - Sold for £500 Lot 163 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside Numberplate "3677", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in June 1940 and allocated new to Didcot. It had moved to Slough at the end of its GWR days and its later sheds were Exeter, Bristol Bath Road, St Philips Marsh, Barrow Road and Gloucester. Right at the end, in the summer of 1965, it went to the Somerset & Dorset Joint Line at Bath Green Park before finishing its days at Oxford from where it was withdrawn in December 1965. After six months in store at Oxford, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in June 1966. The front repainted, back original condition. - Sold for £540 Lot 164 A Southern Railway Target Sign "TULSE HILL", from the LB&SCR London Bridge to Sutton route. Good colour and shine with the usual edge chips, a few minor surface marks. - Sold for £230 Lot 165 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "NORTHAM", (f/f), from the LSWR Southampton Terminus branch, the station closed on the 5th September 1966. Excellent colour and shine, a chip repair between the "A" & "M" and a minor blemish at left side. - Sold for £300 Lot 166 A small wooden Carriage Board "MERTHYR/BUTE ROAD", used on services from Merthyr (via Pontypridd) to Cardiff Bute Road (now renamed Cardiff Bay), cream on maroon, 32"x3_", excellent condition with just minor paint wear away from the lettering, the steel end fittings intact. - Sold for £80 Lot 167 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, No 25879, 1946", from a LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 which was actually ex works in January 1947, original number 1123, becoming BR 61123. Its sheds were Colwick, Ardsley, Copley Hill, Wakefield and finally York from where it was withdrawn in May 1967. After seven months in store at York, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following December. Cast white brass diamond, 13_"x5_", the front repainted dark blue, the back dirty, a minor stress fracture below the right bolt hole. - Sold for £210 Lot 168 A Great Western Railway Hotels circular silver plated Drinks Salver by Walker and Hall with a decorative sunburst pattern and the company's roundel device in the centre, 12" diameter; fine usable condition. - Sold for £220 Lot 169 A LNER-E, Great Eastern Railway pattern, three aspect "Sliding Knob" Handlamp, the top stamped "SPITALFIELDS 464" and brass plated, "F.ARMSTRONG". Complete and in excellent condition other than lacking the blue glass, the brass work and copper cone polished and repainted red. Unusually it still retains its back handle. - Sold for £210 Lot 170 A BR(M) quad royal Poster "THE MIDLAND PULLMAN, THE TRAIN OF TODAY", by Wolstenholme, a dramatic view of the train leaving a tunnel in the Peak District, with times from the 2nd January 1962 for St Pancras, Cheadle Heath and Manchester Central. Rolled and in excellent condition with just one minor mark at base and a few edge nick repairs. - Sold for £210 Lot 171 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1964, SWINDON", from a BR Class 14 "Teddy Bear" 0-6-0. All were built at Swindon, the 1964 batch comprising D9500-24. All of this notably short-lived Class were withdrawn in less than five years, many being sold off for industrial use, preservation and export. Cast aluminium oval 10_"x6", the front cleaned and repainted, the back lightly cleaned, but with oxidization. - Sold for £110 Lot 172 A Single Line Key Token "GOXHILL - IMMINGHAM WEST JCTN", (brass). The key end is of an unusual configuration having two grooves cut in the centre of the head. It is mounted on a small wooden stand and is believed to have been presented to a signalman when the keys ceased to be used (although the stand bears no inscription). - Sold for £50 Lot 173 A London and South Western Railway four aspect Handlamp with side door. The side bears an impressive embossed brass plate "L&SWR Co" with the initials also stamped below. It is complete with its brass collar and bezel, internal fittings (SR burner) and glass (crack to orange). Excellent original condition, the brass lightly polished. - Sold for £150 Lot 174 A BR(E) dark blue enamel Doorplate "POLICE", (flangeless), excellent colour and shine, edge chips touched in and chipping at left edge also retouched, an infrequently used example, seen only at the larger stations and those adjacent to the ports. - Sold for £190 Lot 175 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "MELTON CONSTABLE", (f/f), from the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railways junction in North Norfolk with routes to Cromer, Yarmouth, Norwich and Peterborough and the site of the company's main works. Excellent colour and shine, with just minor rust and chips on the flange. - Sold for £3600 Lot 176 A Locomotive Worksplate "GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, MAKERS, DONCASTER, No 1315, 1911", from a GNR Class J22, LNER J6 Class, 0-6-0 built in October 1911, GNR No 525. It became LNER No 3525, and was renumbered 4174 in 1946, becoming BR 64174. In BR days it was shedded at Ardsley and Retford from where it was withdrawn in September 1961 and cut up at Gorton Works the following month. Fully engraved brass oval, 12_"x7_", the front polished, the back untouched. - Sold for £480 Lot 177 A North Eastern Railway large copper Swing Bridge Lamp from Hartlepool Docks, with red bullseye lenses on two sides, white and green on the other two. The lamp has pillars at each corner with decorative pinnacles on top, overall 29_" high, the body 21_"x14_". - Sold for £90 Lot 178 A Brass Cabside Numberplate "RHODESIA RAILWAY Co LD, 39", from a Rhodesia Railways 3ft 6ins gauge Class 7 4-8-0 built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 16093, in 1903. It was transferred to Mozambique Railways in 1949 as their No 12 on the division of ownership of the Beira route and was noted still in service in 1974. Cast brass oval, 19_"x13", cleaned and the front repainted red. - Sold for £550 Lot 179 A Great Western Railway cast iron Signal Box nameboard "BLEDLOW SIGNAL BOX" from the Princes Risborough to Oxford route. The station closed on the 7th January 1963, with through freight traffic lasting another four years, after which the section between Thame and Morris Cowley was lifted. Freight continued to Thame until 1991, though the box closed during the 1960s. 65_" long, unrestored with original paintwork. - Sold for £820 Lot 180 A Locomotive Worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD GLASGOW, 1928, QUEENS PARK WORKS No 23847", from a GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT No 5729 which entered service at Aberdare in February 1929. It had moved to Severn Tunnel Junction by the end of its GWR days and finished its life at Aberbeeg from where it was withdrawn in October 1957 and was cut up at Swindon Works two months later. Cast brass diamond 15_"x6_", ex loco condition. - Sold for £520 Lot 181 A Road Sign "LOW GEAR FOR 2/3 MILE", by Gowshall, 27_"x14", original condition and complete with reflectors. - Sold for £100 Lot 182 A BR(S) Locomotive Headlamp complete with all its interior fittings and glass, the base embossed BR-A, (Ashford). The lamp has been repainted. - Sold for £70 Lot 183 A Southern Railway Signal Lever Plate "31, ALONG DOWN L.M.R. SHUNT, 10, 29", cast iron, white on red paintwork, "SR, T.H. & S" cast into the back. The plate refers to the Longmoor Military Railway and comes from Liss Signal Box, the junction for the LMR, 3_"x8_". - Sold for £6 Lot 184 A BR(W) chocolate and cream Totem Sign "KENSINGTON OLYMPIA", (f/f), from the West London / Extension Railway between North Pole Junction and Latchmere Junction, which provided a through route from the GWR and LNWR lines to Clapham Junction. Excellent colour and shine, superb condition and a famous London name. - Sold for £1900 Lot 185 A Locomotive Cab Worksplate "BUILT BY THE BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON Co LTD, SMETHWICK, ENGLAND 1961, SERIAL No, DEL 141", from the BR Class 33 Bo-Bo No D6549 allocated new to Hither Green in April 1961. It was renumbered 33031 in February 1974 and withdrawn from Eastleigh in February 1989 to be cut up at MC Processors, Glasgow in June 1991. Cast brass, 4"x3", ex loco condition. - Sold for £120 Lot 186 An original F.Moore painting of a Furness Railway Locomotive No 130, built by N.B.L Glasgow 1913, LMS 10185, and withdrawn in 1932, overall 13_"x11", with contemporary frame, the image 8"x5_", within mount. - Sold for £110 Lot 187 A BR(Sc) double royal Poster "THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, SCHIEHALLION (3547 feet) AND LOCH RANNOCH", by Kenneth Steel, a view of the famous mountain, close to the West Highland Line, rolled with folds. - Sold for £150 Lot 188 A Carriage Print "RIVER DEE AT CAMBUS O' MAY, ABERDEENSHIRE by Lance Cattermole", featuring the Ballater Line in the foreground and the suspension bridge over the River Dee, the print is in its original frame and has actually been used in compartment and, though perhaps a touch faded compared to unused examples, it is in good ex carriage condition. Although a few prints feature trains in the landscape, this is the only example we are aware of that shows a stretch of railway line close up. - Sold for £130 Lot 189 A Smokebox numberplate "44211", from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 built at Derby in 1925, LMS No 4211. In BR days it was shedded at Grimesthorpe, then Saltley for ten years, Carnforth and Skipton from where it was withdrawn in March 1965. After seven months in store at Skipton, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following October. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £290 Lot 190 A Great Northern Railway 10" dial Dropcase Wall Clock with fusee movement, the original face marked "BR(E) 10398". The clock is complete with pendulum, key and side/base doors and spun brass bezel. The inside of the case is marked twice with the clock number, the woodwork has been cleaned and polished, working order. - Sold for £400 Lot 191 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "FELIXSTOWE TOWN - FELIXSTOWE BEACH", (brass/steel), from the Great Eastern Railway Felixstowe Pier branch. The branch to the "Beach" station closed to passengers in 1967 and in 1970 the spur from the Town station to the branch was closed, a new spur giving direct access from the Ipswich direction opening on the trackbed of the original route which had been closed in 1898. A lovely old example. GER brass tablets appear uncommon as the company generally used alloy examples. - Sold for £560 Lot 192 A North Eastern Railway Platform Lamp from Fyling Hall Station on the Whitby to Scarborough route, complete with copper top, glass, vessel burner and glass chimney and a replacement white panel bearing the station name in black lettering. Overall 27_" high. The line closed on the 8th March 1965. - Sold for £160 Lot 193 A Locomotive Worksplate "SIR W.G.ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & Co, (ENGINEERS) LTD, No 1257, 1935, SCOTSWOOD WORKS, NEWCASTLE - ON - TYNE", (with the company's crown, arm and hammer in centre), from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0, original No 5216, becoming BR 45216. In BR days it was shedded at Bank Hall and Rose Grove from where it was withdrawn in February 1966. After four months in store at Rose Grove, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh the following June. In May 1953 this engine was one of a number from various other regions temporarily transferred to the Southern Region following the short-term withdrawal of first the Merchant Navies and then the Bulleid Light Pacifics for examination of their axles. No 45216 was allocated to Nine Elms and worked services on the Bournemouth and Exeter routes before returning to Bank Hall after a couple of months in unfamiliar territory. Cast brass rectangle, 8_"x5", the top right bolt hole distorted, the left has corner absent. Ex loco condition other than the loco number chalked on the back of the plate. - Sold for £100 Lot 194 An L.M.S. "Hawkseye" Target sign "KIRKBY", from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Liverpool to Manchester main line between Fazakerley Junction and Rainford Junction and the site of one of the LYR Water Troughs; 48" long and in lovely original condition, retaining its maroon paintwork on glass beading which is undamaged other than a small portion at the base. - Sold for £190 Lot 195 A Single Line Key Token "LLANBRYNMAIR - CEMMES ROAD", (steel, engraved brass plate), from the Cambrian Railway's Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth route. Both stations closed on the 14th June 1965, the latter being the junction for the Mawddwy Railway, closed in 1930. - Sold for £340 Lot 196 A GWR Cast Iron Notice "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN IN PURSUANCE OF THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 65 OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, ADDITIONAL POWERS ACT 1924 THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PATH", white on grey paintwork, 25"x16", with moulded border. - Sold for £180 Lot 197 An LNWR Fletchers, Permissive double line Block Instrument with a trafolite plate "CARRIAGE SIDINGS", and with bell below, good original condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 198 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "PULBOROUGH", (f/f), from the LB&SCR Arun Valley route from Horsham to Littlehampton and once the junction for the Midhurst branch. (2) - Sold for £190 Lot 201 A Diesel Locomotive Nameplate "DRUID", from the BR Class 42 "Warship" B-B No D815 built at Swindon in January 1960 and named when built. It was allocated new to Laira, withdrawn from Newton Abbot in October 1971 and cut up at BREL Swindon the following October. The engine almost certainly takes its name from the Royal Navy destroyer, HMS Druid, built in 1911 although other ships have also carried this name. Cast aluminium 31"x11", the front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £6400 Lot 202 A Locomotive Worksplate "NEILSON REID & Co, HYDE PARK LOCOMOTIVE WORKS, GLASGOW, 1901, No 6049", from a Great Central Railway Class 9J, LNER J11 Class, 0-6-0, GC No 987, LNER 5987, ex Works in December 1901. It was renumbered 4294 in 1946, becoming BR 64294. A long time Gorton engine, it was withdrawn from there in September 1959 and cut up at the nearby Works the following month. Cast brass oval, 65/8"x43/8", the front background repainted black, the back untouched. - Sold for £340 Lot 203 An enamel notice "TO PREVENT MISTAKES CUSTOMERS ARE REQUESTED TO NOTICE THAT ALL GOODS ARE STAMPED IN PLAIN FIGURES, ON THE SOLE, TERMS STRICTLY CASH, NO SECOND PRICE, TYLER & SONS", white serif lettering on blue, 36"x12", good colour, loss of shine, edge and several small face chips. The term "On The Sole" refers to the sole bar of a wagon. - Sold for £40 Lot 204 A London and North Western Railway small bone Guards Whistle with chain, 23/8" long and in exceptionally fine condition. The company initials clearly marked on the body. - Sold for £55 Lot 205 A Bombay Baroda and Central India Railway mounted coat of arms Transfer, featuring an elaborate monogram within blue garter with gilt wreath surround, green background, 15_"x16_" overall. - Sold for £50 Lot 206 A London, Brighton and South Coast Railway brass cased Semaphore Signal Repeater showing the rear of the distant arm on a brass finialed post. The back is painted "No 9, AS. Lot 214 A Great Western Railway Cast Iron Cabside Numberplate "8767", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in December 1933 and allocated new to Old Oak Common where it remained for thirty years before moving to Oxley, Stourbridge Junction and finally Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn in July 1966. It was cut up four months later at Cohens, Kettering. The front repainted long ago, the back in original condition. - Sold for £380 Lot 215 An experimental BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "GIRVAN", from the Glasgow and South Western Railway's Glasgow to Stranraer main line, situated on the coast between Maybole and Barrhill. Light blue perspex body of standard size, _" thick, with raised white lettering (no white border or lines). Fixing holes at each end and prominent marks on back from mounting bracket, plenty of dirt and brake dust around the sides of the lettering. White on blue, 10"x14", excellent condition with just the top screw holes chipped. - Sold for £420 Lot 218 A Smokebox Numberplate "4090", from the GWR 4073 "Castle" Class 4-6-0 "DORCHESTER CASTLE" built at Swindon in February 1925 and allocated new to Old Oak Common. By the end of its GWR days it had moved to Laira and its later sheds were Penzance, Stafford Road and Old Oak Common, with stays towards the end at Landore, Carmarthen, Neath, Shrewsbury and finally Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn in June 1963. After a year in store at East Dock, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in June 1964. The engine takes its name from the castle which once stood in the north part of the county town of Dorset. The front repainted long ago. - Sold for £1800 Lot 219 A Locomotive Builders Plate "ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, 1960", from the BR Class 82 25kv Bo-Bo No 82007 built by Beyer Peacock, Works Nos 1028/7891. It entered traffic in January 1962 as E3053 and was renumbered 82007 in April 1974. It was withdrawn from Longsight in August 1983 and cut up at V Berry, Leicester in September 1984. Cast aluminium 18"x5", ex loco condition with BR blue paintwork on front. - Sold for £840 Lot 220 A Locomotive Worksplate and Tenderplate Set "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 60961 DARLINGTON WORKS 1942" and similar "7260", from an LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 built at Darlington in December 1942, original number 3673, renumbered 961 in 1946, becoming BR 60961. A York engine for the whole of its BR days, it was withdrawn from there in April 1965 and, after three months in store at York, cut up at Drapers, Hull the following July. It is unusual to find a pair of plates like this from the same engine offered together. Each cast brass oval, 9"x5". The front background repainted apple green and the characters and rim polished, the back of the loco plate untouched, the other lightly polished. (2) - Sold for £800 Lot 221 A Tyers No 1 Single Line Tablet "CROSS KEYS BRIDGE", (brass/steel), from the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. The swing bridge was at Sutton Bridge on the Spalding to Kings Lynn section. The bridge and the route eastwards closed on the 2nd March 1959, though freight continued to serve the town from the west until 1965. - Sold for £260 Lot 222 An LNER Locomotive "Destination" Headboard "KIRKINTILLOCH / HYNDLAND", steel with black and white original paintwork, 36_" long. The board would have been used on cross Glasgow suburban services. - Sold for £130 Lot 223 A Great Eastern Railway Pension Supplemental Fund Certificate. A colourful presentation featuring the company's coat of arms and vignettes of ship, locomotive, carriage, wagon, signals, also clasped hands, beehive (symbolising productivity) and a wolf walking away from a cottage door. The certificate is signed by Claud Hamilton and with its original frame measures 21"x27_". It was designed by W.Lucas of the GER Carriage Dept and printed at Stratford Works. A little staining at the base away from the detail, otherwise excellent. - Sold for £60 Lot 224 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "FRODSHAM", (f/f), from the GWR and LNWR Joint Line from Chester and Birkenhead to Acton Grange Junction near Warrington and situated close to Runcorn. A chip at the left edge with flange distortion and a face chip at right end in maroon and in white. - Sold for £600 Lot 225 An Industrial Nameplate "BICKERSHAW", from a 0-6-0ST I/C built by Hunslet in 1933, Works No 1699, and supplied new to Bickershaw Collieries Ltd at Bickershaw Colliery, Leigh. It became National Coal Board property in January 1947 and later moved to Walton Colliery and in June 1965 to Park Hill Colliery, Wakefield. It was cut up by July 1966. The side is marked "CREWE P WAY" and the top "L&NWR CAR DEP, WOLVERTON" (its place of manufacture), part repainted. - Sold for £150 Lot 228 A London and North Western Railway quad royal Poster, featuring an "Express Parcels Traffic" road van and driver, the side of the van bearing a poster "London and Ireland", with steamer. The image is in brown with green background, rolled, minor defects in places and the back edge strengthened. This is believed to be part of a huge billboard display, illustrating the various aspects of the company's activities, though it is a fine image in its own right. - Sold for £55 Lot 229 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1962, CREWE", as removed from a BR Class 52 "Western" awaiting cutting-up at Swindon Works. Excellent colour and shine with just slight mottling, two chips below top end fixing holes into the blue, neatly matched. - Sold for £620 Lot 232 A Locomotive Headboard "THE ABERDONIAN", as carried on the King's Cross to Aberdeen sleeping car service which was introduced in July 1927 and continued to run, titled, until May 1971. This early style of BR headboard was introduced in June 1950 and continued to be used until the Deltics took over from steam in the summer of 1962. Most frequently the service was entrusted to the A1 and A2 Class Pacifics. A printed notice with typewritten detail, dated April 1954 and signed by S.W.Smart, Supt of Operation, Southampton. The box was open continuously from 3.45 am Monday to 4.50 am the following Sunday, shifts for each signalmen are listed. The notice is in its original glazed frame, 9_"x14_". - Sold for £680 Lot 235 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED, CALEDONIA WORKS KILMARNOCK, No 1921, 1927", from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0, original number 4377, becoming BR 44377, one of only 25 of this large Class built by Barclay. A long time Stoke engine, it moved late on to Crewe South, Warrington, Workington and Bescot. Finally in May 1965 it joined several others of its Class as Works shunters at Crewe and with sister engine 44525 became the last of the 4Fs to be withdrawn in October 1966. After four months in store at Crewe Works, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull in February 1967. Cast brass oval, 9_"x7", the front repainted red with black outer border, the back untouched (the word "Limited" is in italic lettering). - Sold for £800 Lot 236 An "LMS HOTELS", silver plated Art Deco Coffee Pot, with angular spout and "Fin" type handle to lid, excellent condition with the company name in vertical rectangle on side, overall 7" high and 8" wide. - Sold for £110 Lot 237 A Single Line Key Token "ST BLAZEY BRIDGE CROSSING - LUXULYAN", (alloy) replacement key end. From the Great Western Railway's Par to Newquay branch, a steeply graded section which passes under the famous Treffry Viaduct. - Sold for £260 Lot 238 A Locomotive Nameplate "COUNTY OF STAFFORD", from the GWR 1000 "County" Class 4-6-0 No 1027 built at Swindon in March 1947 and allocated new to Westbury. Three years later it moved to West Wales where it spent most of its working life at Neyland, with brief spells late on at Bristol Bath Road, Shrewsbury and finally Swindon from where it was withdrawn in October 1963. After a period in store at Swindon Works, it was cut up at Coopers Metals, Sharpness the following June. This is the left-hand side nameplate which was fitted directly to the locomotive splasher and does not, therefore, have an extended backplate. The nameplate is 77" long. - Sold for £13200 Lot 239 A BR(S) dark green Totem Sign "EXTON", (f/f), from the London and South Western Railway Exeter to Exmouth branch line. The single platform station with only four totems was originally named "WOODBURY ROAD" and purported to serve the villages of Woodbury and Woodbury Salterton, some three to four miles away.It was renamed on the 15th September 1958 and is situated between Topsham and Lympstone, on the Exe Estuary, opposite the GWR main line just north of Starcross. Excellent colour and good shine, one chip repair on the upper white line and small face chips, all neatly matched in. - Sold for £500 Lot 240 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "DELABOLE - PORT ISAAC ROAD, (brass/steel), from the London and South Western Railway's North Cornwall Line from Okehampton to Padstow, which closed on the 3rd of October 1966. The tablet is stamped "Not In Use" as was the custom when such items were sold by the Exeter Central Signal and Telegraph Dept. - Sold for £540 Lot 241 A Locomotive Nameplate "THE QUEEN'S OWN HUSSARS", a cast aluminium plate incorporating the royal coat of arms at the left side, from HST power car No 43096 built at Crewe in July 1978 and paired with car No 43097 to make up set 254021. It was allocated to Heaton and named at Darlington Station on 14th May 1985 by HM The Queen Mother, Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment. The nameplates were removed in December 1987 during a repaint into "Swallow" livery and and were themselves repainted prior to intended re-fitting but were instead replaced by reflective nameplates with silver background. The power car is currently running on the East Coast Main Line, renumbered 43296 after refurbishment, and named "Stirling Castle". 49"x9". The back is in original condition with plenty of oxidization. - Sold for £1600 Lot 242 A Great North of Scotland Railway Copper Platform Lamp with blue name label "AUCHINDACHY" applied to the inside of the glass, overall 34" high. The station was on the Keith Junction to Dufftown section of the Aberdeen to Elgin main line and closed on the 6th May 1968, though freight continued to Dufftown Distillery for many years. - Sold for £210 Lot 243 An SAR brass Cabside Numberplate "SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS, 1523, 12 AR", from a 3'6" gauge Class 12A 4-8-2 built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 21741, in 1919. It was reboilered in about the 1930s and reclassified as Class 12AR. The Class was used for heavy coal haulage. Cast brass oval, 20"x14", ex loco condition with original red paintwork. - Sold for £480 Lot 244 An Electric Locomotive Worksplate "BRITISH RAILWAYS, DONCASTER 1965, ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT BY ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES & THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC Co LTD", from a BR Class 86 25kv Bo-Bo. Those built in 1965 were E3101-30/32-4/6, all of which were renumbered in the 86XXX series in 1973-4. Cast aluminium 8_"x 6", ex loco condition, with original blue paintwork. - Sold for £250 Lot 245 A GWR Cast Iron Notice "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NO ADMISSION, EXCEPT ON BUSINESS, BY ORDER". 14_"x9", from the down platform at Swindon Station, the front repainted, the back in original undercoat. - Sold for £210 Lot 246 A Smokebox Numberplate "92074", from a BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 built at Crewe and allocated new to Doncaster in February 1956. It soon moved to Annesley where, with others of its Class, it worked the renowned "windcutters", as the loose coupled freight workings from the Nottinghamshire coalfield to Woodford Halse were usually known. It remained at Annesley until 1965 when it moved to Banbury, then to Croes Newydd and finally Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in April 1967. After four months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw the following August. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £780 Lot 247 A London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Brass Pressure Gauge, indicating 1-30 VACUUM INCHES OF MERCURY. The face marked "LB&SCR" with the makers name "Dewrance, London" all in red lettering, 8" diameter, including backplate. - Sold for £60 Lot 248 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "MARKET HARBOROUGH", (f/f), from the Midland Railway's St Pancras to Leicester main line. The station was also served by the Northampton to Peterborough route and services northward via the GN & LNWR Joint line. The vendor has suggested that the lamp is of Midland Railway origin. - Sold for £20 Lot 252 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1961, SWINDON", from the BR Class 42 "Warship" D822 "Hercules" which actually emerged from Swindon Works some while earlier, in June 1960, and was allocated to Laira. It was withdrawn from the same shed in October 1971 and cut up at BREL Swindon the following February. No fewer than five Royal Navy ships bore this name but the locomotive was probably named after the dreadnaught battleship launched in May 1910. Cast aluminium oval, 10_"x6", the front repainted black, the back lightly cleaned and marked "D822"; there is some evidence of maroon paintwork on the rim. - Sold for £520 Lot 253 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "BANAVIE CANAL - ANNAT", (alloy), from the North British Railway's West Highland Extension to Mallaig. The section runs from the swingbridge over the Caledonian Canal at Banavie, through Corpach Station to Annat where the box provides access to sidings. - Sold for £380 Lot 254 A Great Western Railway brass Cabside Numberplate "5084", from the 4073 "Castle" Class 4-6-0 "READING ABBEY" which was rebuilt in April 1937 from the 1922-built "Star" Class 4-6-0 No 4064 whose name it retained with the addition of the "Castle Class" appendage below the name. The rebuilt engine first entered service at Weymouth and finished its GWR days at Bristol Bath Road, later moving to Swindon and finally in 1955 to Old Oak Common where it remained until withdrawn in July 1962. After five months in store at OOC, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport the following December. The engine takes its name from the Benedictine Abbey founded by King Henry I in1121, some ruins of which remain in Forbury Gardens, Reading. It was renumbered D2223 in September 1958, withdrawn from Colchester in May 1971 and cut up at Cohens, Kettering the following November. Cast brass rectangle, 8"x5", repainted black. - Sold for £220 Lot 272 A Single Line Key Token "NEWLANDS - WATERHALL", (alloy), from the Port Talbot Railway's Margam to Cefn line, part of the route from Port Talbot to Tondu. - Sold for £140 Lot 273 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "KEITH JUNCTION", (f/f), from the Inverness to Aberdeen main line, where the Highland line joined the GNSR route to the south. Excellent colour and shine, edge chips at lower right left holes and top right just into blue, all matched. - Sold for £850 Lot 274 A Diesel Locomotive Nameplate "THOR", from BR Class 47 Co-Co No D1671 which was built at Crewe and entered traffic in March 1965 at Cardiff Canton where it received its "Thor" nameplates without ceremony the following September. On 17th December 1965 it was derailed near Bridgend and then run into by D6983, both locos being extensively damaged. It was stored in a siding adjacent to Bridgend station and condemned on 18th April 1966. Some re-usable parts, including both nameplates, were removed and the engine taken to the local scrap yard, RS Hayes, where it was cut up by September 1966, only the second Class 47 to be withdrawn and the first named example to go. The nameplates were taken to Bristol Bath Road and put on the next available engine in the series, D1677, on 29th August 1966. This second loco, also built at Crewe, entered traffic in April 1965 and carried the plates until September 1975. During this time the original black background of the nameplates was repainted red. D1677 became 47091 in March 1974, 47647 in February 1986, 47846 in November 1989 and 57308 in May 2003 under which guise it remains in service carrying the name "Thunderbirds Tin Tin". This is one of the original nameplates as evidenced by the smaller size of the fixing holes. The later replacement plates, fitted after April 1985, had larger holes to accommodate fixing screws. The plate is in totally ex loco condition with some damage to the right upper rivet hole and border. Three photos accompany the plate; a rare shot of D1671 at Bristol Bath Road, D1677 at Crewe Works and 47091 pre-1975. - Sold for £4800 Lot 275 A pair of Great Western Railway Brass Locomotive Whistles, one large and one small, as fitted to many of the company's engines from Panniers to Kings, this pair unpolished and complete with their base "knuckles". (2) - Sold for £250 Lot 276 A Pullman Car Company circular coat of arms with the name "CAR FINGALL" below, 85/8" diameter. The back marked in pencil with the name number and dimensions. These examples were fitted in place of the car's clocks which proved unreliable. The coat of arms comes from a first class Kitchen car built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. in 1924, it worked on The London & North Eastern and later the Southern Railway before being withdrawn in December 1963. It was sold to Lord Montague of Beaulieu for static display, it moved to the Isle of Wight Steam Centre in 1978 and to the Bluebell Railway in 1978/79 where it was restored to its original condition. - Sold for £400 Lot 277 An original watercolour painting by T.E.Oben, featuring former S&DJR Loco 53809, running into Binegar Station with a short freight train, on a sunny but snowy day in the late 1950s, superb detail, buildings, staff, signalling and box. Details of its war service are not recorded but it was renumbered 826 in 1951 and in January 1952 was shipped to Suez. By March 1955 it had returned to the UK at Bicester Military Railway. It moved to West Hallam from November 1955 until July 1958 when it returned to Bicester. From about 1960 it was used by The British Army of the Rhine and renumbered 126, also acquiring the name (probably unofficial) "Arnie". On again returning to Bicester in January 1969 it was first stored and then repaired before going on loan to the Royal Navy at Gosport from November 1971 until March 1975 when it went back to Bicester and was eventually sold to Farthingstone Silos Ltd, Northampton in December 1978. Cast brass oval 16_"x11_", unrestored. Cast aluminium diamond 14_"x6_", the front cleaned and repainted black with red border, the back in original condition. - Sold for £180 Lot 291 A Locomotive Worksplate "KITSON & Co LTD, 5476, LEEDS, 1936", from a 0-6-0ST I/C which went new in October 1936 to Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd at their Corby Ironworks, where it was numbered 48 and named "Criggion". It transferred to Stewarts & Lloyds Minerals Ltd, which took over the S&L quarry operations, and worked at Corby Quarries, latterly taken over by British Steel, until 1968 and was cut up on site by 1969 by George Cohen. It has a cast brass bezel with plate glass, below "1466 SE" is branded in the surround. On returning to the UK it was again loaned to the LNER in March 1946 and purchased by them the following December, becoming LNER No 3012. It became BR No 63012 and later 90012. The lamp has an unusual side door rather than the normal arrangement whereby the front opens, the body is stamped "L&SWR" on both sides and is repainted, the top in red with white lettering "GANG No 49", restoring the original worn inscription. It is complete with all fittings and in excellent condition, other than a chip from the corner of the red glass. - Sold for £290 Lot 309 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "BAGWORTH", (f/f), from the Midland Railway's Leicester to Burton on Trent route and situated just south of Coalvill. The station closed on the 7th September 1964, though the route is still used for freight. Excellent colour and shine, lovely condition. - Sold for £660 Lot 310 A Locomotive Worksplate "THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD, LONDON, 2725/8135, 1960, ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD. LOCOMOTIVE WORKS ENGLAND", from a BR Class 40 1Co-Co1 No D305, the first of a batch of 20 of the Class built by RSH. It entered service at Crewe North in October 1960, was renumbered 40105 in March 1974 and withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in December 1980. It was cut up at BREL Swindon the following March. An expert repair at the right end away from the lettering, 24" long, original green paintwork. - Sold for £260 Lot 316 A Locomotive Nameplate "NILGHAI", from the LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 built at Darlington, Works No 1999, in February 1947, original number 1019, becoming BR 61019. Always a North Eastern area engine, its sheds were Tweedmouth, Gateshead, Blaydon, Heaton and finally York from where it was withdrawn in March 1967. After a period in store at York shed, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following December. One of forty B1s named after antelopes, but one of only four named after Asian species (the majority being African), the Nilghai is an Indian antelope with short, straight horns. 43" long, the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £9600 Lot 317 A Highland Railway Company mounted coat of arms Transfer. the twin shields showing a sheep with St Andrews flag and the crucifixion, surmounted by an eagle, within light green garter, the background olive, overall 13_"x15". - Sold for £110 Lot 318 A Webb and Thompson large Single Line Train Staff "ATHENRY - CRAUGWELL", from the Waterford Limerick and Western Railway's Collooney (near Sligo) to Limerick route, this section being just east of Galway. The staff is steel with brass rings and cast brass plates. - Sold for £120 Lot 319 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "WOODHALL", (h/f), from the Caledonian Railway's Glasgow to Gourock route and situated on the Firth of Clyde just east of Port Glasgow. The colour faded and loss of shine, some face chips touched in. - Sold for £390 Lot 320 A Smokebox Numberplate "60028", from the LNER Gresley Class A4 4-6-2 built at Doncaster, Works No 1852, in April 1937, original LNER number 4487, renumbered 28 in November 1946. It was originally named "Sea Eagle" but renamed "Walter K. Whigham in October 1947 after the LNER's Deputy Chairman. It was allocated new to Gateshead but soon moved to Haymarket, then Doncaster and back to Haymarket before settling at its long-term home, Kings Cross, in May 1939. Apart from a three year stay at Grantham between 1945 and 1948, it remained a renowned Kings Cross performer until withdrawal in December 1962 and was cut up at Doncaster Works the following month. The front repainted. - Sold for £5500 Lot 321 A Diesel Locomotive Worksplate "THE HUNSLET ENGINE Co LTD, LEEDS, 204 HP-No 5637, 1959", from a BR Class 05 0-6-0DM No D2588 which entered traffic at Wakefield in November 1959 and was withdrawn from West Hartlepool in March 1967. It was cut up the following July at Slag Reduction, Pickles, Rotherham. Cast brass oval, 11_"x6". The front repainted red. - Sold for £320 Lot 322 A Pullman Silver Plated Sugar Bowl with shaped rim, the side marked "THE PULLMAN CAR COMPANY LTD", around the coat of arms, excellent condition. - Sold for £50 Lot 323 A North Staffordshire Railway brass Guards Whistle, the company initials stamped on top, though well polished. It was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge four months later. Rolled with some careful repairs into the image. - Sold for £750 Lot 341 A London and North Western & Great Western Joint Bridgeplate "L & NW & GW JOINT LINES, 3", cast iron oval, 17_"x11_", the front repainted. - Sold for £90 Lot 342 A Sykes Southern Railway brass cased Repeater. The original face marked "A TRACK CLEAR/OCCUPIED", the instrument is complete with its brass makers plate on top, "SYX, W.R.SYKES INTERLOCKING SIGNAL Co LTD". - Sold for £130 Lot 343 A Locomotive Worksplate "WALKER BROTHERS (WIGAN) LTD, PAGEFIELD IRONWORKS, ESTD 1866, WIGAN", from a County Donegal Railway Diesel Railcar. This firm started in the 1870s as J Scarisbrook Walker & Bros, changing its name to Walker Bros (Wigan) Ltd in about 1880. Primarily a firm of iron founders and general engineers, they manufactured steam locomotives, about twenty in all, up to about 1888, all of them tank engines for local collieries and contractors. They subsequently manufactured diesel passenger railcars. Engraved brass oval, 5" diameter. Excellent colour and shine, one tiny edge chip top right well matched. - Sold for £360 Lot 352 A Great Western Railway brass Cabside Numberplate "4997", from the 4900 "Hall Class" 4-6-0 "Elton Hall" built at Swindon in March 1931 and allocated new to Oxford. By the end of its GWR days it was at Neyland and later moved to Stafford Road and Oxley from where it was withdrawn in September 1961. It was cut up the following month at Swindon Works. The actual Hall is in Northamptonshire, five miles north-east of Oundle. The black background probably original paintwork, the orange band and border repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £1900 Lot 353 A Southern Railway enamel Target Sign "REEDHAM", from the South Eastern and Chatham Railway's Chipstead Valley Line to Tattenham Corner. The station is visible from trains on the nearby Brighton Main Line. Excellent colour and shine, minor rim chips. - Sold for £580 Lot 384 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "PETROCKSTOW - HATHERLEIGH", (brass), from the Southern Railway's North Devon and Cornwall Junction Light Railway, opened in 1925, linking Torrington with Halwill Junction. The route closed to passengers on the 1st March 1965, after a life of only forty years, though freight to Meeth continued until 1982 over part of this section. - Sold for £920 Lot 385 A Diesel Locomotive Makers Plate "METROPOLITAN - VICKERS, 1958", from a BR Class 28 Co-Bo. Those built in 1958 were D5700-07. All were allocated new to Derby and had been withdrawn by September 1968. Cast aluminium, 18"x5", ex loco condition with original green paintwork. - Sold for £900 Lot 386 An LNER Signal Box/Station Hanging Oil Lamp, with blue body and oval embossed "LNER" badge, glass chimney and shade. The lamp is supported in a barley twist brass cradle, is restored and was used at Easingwold Station, the terminus of the short branch from Alne (on the East Coast Main Line, north of York), and closed to passengers on the 29th November 1948 and freight in 1957. - Sold for £120 Lot 387 A BR(W) quad royal Poster "SWITCH TO BLUE PULLMAN, Top Comfort In Train Travel". An impressive colour photograph of the train at speed in Sonning Cutting, rolled, excellent condition. - Sold for £40 Lot 388 An enamel poster board header "LONDON TRANSPORT", white on blue, incorporating three white rectangles, the centre housing the name, above and below a white bar with blue diamonds, overall 54"x4_", chips at fixing holes in centre of name, affecting four letters and at each end, a little work would make this attractive and presentable. - Sold for £140 Lot 389 A Smokebox Numberplate, "5034", from the GWR 4073 "Castle" Class 4-6-0 "CORFE CASTLE" built at Swindon in May 1935 and allocated new to Newton Abbot where it remained until moving to Reading in December 1950. It later went to Old Oak Common from where it was withdrawn in February 1961. After a period in store at 81A, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in November 1962. The engine takes its name from the ruined mediaeval castle which overlooks the Swanage Steam Railway. The front repainted over the original paintwork, back original paintwork from which the soot and dirt has been brushed off. - Sold for £2200 Lot 390 A Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT 1958 HORWICH". Engines built that year were all BR Class 08 0-6-0DE Nos D3593-611/803-7, which were renumbered 08478-96/636-40 in 1974-5. It was built by General Electric in South Africa, Works No 40444, in 1975, ex loco condition with original paintwork, black edge, blue centre, 20_"x14_". - Sold for £65 Lot 392 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "WHITTLESEA", (h/f), from the Great Eastern Railway's Peterborough to March route, although the nearby village is spelt Whittlesey, the station name has always been spelt with an "A". excellent colour and shine, one small chip on the edge of the second "T", well matched. - Sold for £1500 Lot 393 An LNER double sided enamel Lamp Tablet "FITZWILLIAM", from the West Riding and Grimsby (GN&GC) line between Doncaster and Wakefield. The station was opened by the LNER in 1937, renamed Fitzwilliam Halt in 1947 and closed on the 6th November 1967, however a new station of the same name opened a mile south in 1982. The sign is "U" shaped in profile, brown on cream, though the cream is discoloured on both sides with surface wear in places, on one side lettering fine, on the other the "M" chipped and rusted, an interesting survivor, from a station which never had totems. - Sold for £60 Lot 394 An LNER three aspect handlamp with brass plate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, FINSBURY PARK 103", complete and unrestored, other than the plate being polished. - Sold for £50 Lot 395 A National Union of Railwaymen Ceremonial Sash in green and orange silk, the front embroidered in gilt wire "N.U. of RAILWAYMEN OF EIS&W, MARYLEBONE BRANCH, WJC", with a locomotive and the clasped hands above and floral decoration below, 75" long with gilt wire tassels each end and a small beehive decoration with tassels at the side. - Sold for £60 Lot 396 An Electric Locomotive Worksplate "No 1052, GORTON, 1952", from a BR Class EM11500v DC electric locomotive No 26045, ex Works in June 1952 and allocated new to Wath Electric Depot. It was withdrawn from Reddish in November 1971 and cut up at BREL Crewe the following April. The Class was re-classified as Class 76 and the engines renumbered in the 260XX series from 1972 but this was one of a handful which failed to survive until the renumbering. Engraved brass oval, 121/8"x6_", ex loco condition with plenty of BR blue paint round the rim. Rhu Station closed on the 15th June 1964 after which the section was extended to Garelochhead. - Sold for £320 Lot 403 A "Pullman" Silver Plated Bread Basket, oval with pointed ends, vertical piercing to the sides and the full coat of arms in centre. Excellent colour and reasonable shine, a few minor surface marks. - Sold for £390 Lot 405 A single line Key Token "LOUDWATER - HIGH WYCOMBE SOUTH" from The Great Western Railways Maidenhead to High Wycombe line, the section north of Bourne End and closed on the 4th May 1970. - Sold for £220 Lot 406 A Shedplate "35A", (New England 1949-58), repainted long ago. - Sold for £80 Lot 407 A Southern Railway green enamel Target Sign "NEW ELTHAM" from the South Eastern Railway's Hither Green to Dartford Section of the North Kent main line, excellent colour and shine with just the usual edge and screw-hole chips. - Sold for £200 Lot 408 A Smokebox Numberplate "63784", from a (Great Central Railway Class 8K) 2-8-0 built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 21858, in May 1918 to Ministry of Munitions order for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 1881, and which went into service in France the following month. On returning to the UK, it was loaned to the Great Eastern Railway from 1919 until going into store at Aintree in August 1921. It was later purchased by the LNER and overhauled at Gorton Works before entering service in September 1925 as LNER No 6507. It was rebuilt in June 1944 with a Thompson B1 type boiler and reclassified as Class O1, renumbered 3784 in 1946 and became BR 63784. Its later sheds were Gorton, Annesley where it worked the famous "windcutter" loose coupled freight trains to Woodford Halse between 1950 and 1957, then March and Staveley GC from where it was withdrawn in August 1963. After four months in store at Staveley, it was cut up at Doncaster Works the following December. Ex loco condition, brass stitch weld between the 6 and the 3 undertaken during its time on the loco, the plate has the "curly" no 6. - Sold for £520 Lot 409 An LNER Worksplate Renumbering Strip "67333" from a North Eastern Railway Class O, LNER G5 Class, 0-4-4T built at Darlington in June 1901, NER/LNER No 540. It was renumbered 7333 in 1946, becoming BR 67333. In BR days it was shedded at Darlington, Northallerton, West Hartlepool and finally Sunderland from where it was withdrawn in October 1956. Cast brass 6_"x13/8, ex loco condition. - Sold for £45 Lot 410 An original "Bourne" Great Western Railway Print "BRIDGE OVER THE UXBRIDGE ROAD, NEAR HANWELL", a fine coloured example with mount. The base marked "From Nature and on Stone, printed by C.F.Cheffins. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", the year engraved, the front repainted, the back just lightly cleaned. - Sold for £120 Lot 415 A Locomotive Cabside Numberplate "E3041" from a BR Class 84 25kv Bo-Bo electric built by North British Locomotive Co in September 1960, Works No 27798. This numberplate was removed when the loco was renumbered 84006 in October 1972. It was withdrawn from Crewe Electric Depot in January 1978 and cut up by J Cashmore at BR Crewe, Gresty Lane in October 1979. It is recorded as being rebuilt in June 1907 when it was renumbered 497 and "renewed" at Derby in November 1912 with GT type boiler but no details are available of its 1927 rebuilding. It became LMS Class 2P No 497 and BR 40497 and was withdrawn from Peterborough Spital Bridge in October 1951. Ideal to sit on and view your collection of diesel worksplates. - Sold for £210 Lot 437 A Ship Builders Plate "H.M.S, "BRAVE SWORDSMAN" VOSPER LTD, PORTSMOUTH, SHIPBUILDERS & ENGINEERS" from a Brave Class gas tubine powered fast attack craft built by Vospers at Porchester. Launched on the 22nd May 1958 and accepted 20th July 1960; upon acceptance Brave Swordsman was attached to the Coastal Forces Trials at HMS Dolphin, Gosport. It was laid up at Hythe in 1970 and later Portsmouth and taken to Pembroke Docks for service as a target at Aberporth Ranges. It was later scrapped by H.J.Pounds at Portsmouth in 1998. This was the last fast attack craft built for the Royal Navy and carried number P1012. It survived until August 1966 when it was withdrawn and scrapped at Kings & Son, Norwich from whom the vendor purchased this chair. Unrestored, with original green moquette, some wear to the surface of the armrests. It was renumbered 20038 in May 1974, withdrawn from Toton in March 1976 and cut up at BREL, Glasgow in June 1977. Chromed brass. 101/8"x4_", the front cleaned but not repainted. - Sold for £340 Lot 445 An SAR Cabside Numberplate "SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS, 2659, 19 D, SUID AFRIKAANSE SPOORWEE", from a 3'6" gauge Class 19D 4-8-2 built by Krupp, Works No 1838, in 1939. The Class was used for branch line duties. Cast brass oval, 20_"x14_", the front cleaned and polished, but not repainted, the back untouched. Engines built at Derby that year were Nos D5069-75/114-48, most of which survived to be renumbered in the 24XXX series in 1973-4. The Line ran from Marshland Junction (Goole) to Haxey Junction (North of Gainsborough), opening between 1900 and 1905. Passenger services ceased in 1933, the last section closing to freight in 1965, after which this sign was removed from a gate near Belton. - Sold for £100 Lot 450 A poster "EVERY RAILWAYMANS ALMANACK, 1890", featuring calendar and historic events from the past which occurred on that day, it also includes photographs and articles on Newhaven Harbour, The Royal Albert Bridge, Gooch etc. An unusual item in excellent condition, within clip frame. Initially loaned to the LMS and GWR, all returned to the WD and were assigned to the Middle East Forces in Persia or Egypt. After the War several returned to the UK but most remained abroad. As both the engines and their tenders carried identical makers plates, it is impossible to say which this is. Painted steel, wear to paintwork in places, 69"x 18" (two sections) - Sold for £110 Lot 473 An LNER Worksplate Renumbering Strip "69867" from an A8 Class 4-6-2T, originally built by the North Eastern Railway at Darlington in March 1914 as a Class D 4-4-4T, LNER Class H1, NER/LNER No 2160. It retained this number after rebuilding as a 4-6-2T in July 1936 but was renumbered 9867 in 1946, becoming BR 69867. In BR days it was shedded at Selby and Botanic Gardens but mainly at Scarborough from where it was withdrawn in December 1959. After more than a year in store at Scarborough, it was cut up at Darlington Works in January 1960. Cast brass, 6_"x13/8", ex loco condition. - Sold for £40 Lot 474 A Single Line Key Token "HORSFORTH - RIGTON", (brass), from the North Eastern Railway's Leeds - Harrogate - Northallerton line. The key was used in the 1960s during prolonged engineering work in Branhope Tunnel. Rigton box was situated just north of Weeton. - Sold for £360 Lot 475 An S.A.R. Locomotive Cabside Numberplate "SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS, E565, 5E, SUID AFRIKAANSE SPORWEE", from a Class 5E 3kv Bo-Bo electric loco built by English Electric for main line duties and used throughout the SAR electrified system. Cast aluminium oval, 24"x14_", ex loco condition with original blue paintwork, the maker's name "EE Co" cast into the back of the plate. - Sold for £60 Lot 476 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "BALCOMBE", (f/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's Brighton Main Line, situated between Three Bridges and Haywards Heath, excellent colour and shine with the odd small chip on the white flange. - Sold for £380 Lot 477 A Locomotive Tenderplate "BRIC, 968, 1954", from the 4725 gallon tender paired with the BR Standard Class 9F 92019 built at Crewe in October 1954 and allocated new to Wellingborough. Apart from a brief stay at Kettering, its only other shed was Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in June 1967. After six months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw in January 1968. Cast iron 8"x5_", yellow undercoat. - Sold for £190 Lot 478 A Shedplate "84A", (alloy), (Laira), as used on its diesel allocation between 1963 and 1973. The front repainted red, the back untouched. - Sold for £70 Lot 479 A Russian Locomotive Worksplate "Voroshilovgrad Lugansk Works USSR [in Cyrillic text] number 2268 of 1975". Production at that time was main line diesel-electric locomotives for the USSR State Railways and certain other aligned overseas countries. Likely candidates are Co-Co types of the Class TE10 family and derivatives and the M62 Class. Cast alloy diamond, 15_"x9_", cleaned but not repainted. - Sold for £70 Lot 480 A pair of framed LMS Certificates, (a) LMS School of Signalling, Manchester 1927-28, F.A.ESKRIETT, Signalman, Rawcliffe, at the top a colour view of 4-6-0 Loco 10453, in the corners photos of LYR and LNWR block instruments, gantry and flags, 13"x17", unusually the personal details and marks are entered to such a standard as to appear printed. (b) Similar but plainer example, 1929-30 with LMS Euston Shield/Scroll, Signalman Eskrietts marks have improved significantly. (2) - Sold for £20 Lot 481 An enamel traction engine registration plate "COUNTY COUNCIL OF CAMB, LOCOMOTIVES ACT 1898, REGISTERED No 163", oval 10"x8", white on reddish brown, excellent colour and shine, a couple of minor edge and screw hole chips. - Sold for £380 Lot 482 A BR(W) chocolate and cream Totem Sign "TWYFORD", (f/f), from the Great Western Railway Paddington to Reading main line, the junction for Henley on Thames. Excellent colour and shine with just minor edge chips. - Sold for £360 Lot 483 An LNWR Brass Fire Hose Nozzle and large Brass LNWR Tap, both well polished and clearly marked with the company's initials. (2) - Sold for £65 Lot 484 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "LEEMING BAR - AINDERBY", (fibre), from the North Eastern Railway's Wensleydale line from Northallerton to Garsdale. Passenger services ceased on the 26th April 1954, with freight surviving until 1965, after which the line was used as far as Redmire exclusively for Quarry Traffic. - Sold for £380 Lot 485 A Locomotive Tenderplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 8854, DARLINGTON WORKS, 1920", from the tender coupled to a North Eastern Railway Class S3, LNER B16 Class, 4-6-0, NER/LNER No 927. It was renumbered 1422 in 1946, becoming BR 61422. In BR days it was shedded at York, Neville Hill, Selby and finally back to York from where it was withdrawn in September 1961 and scrapped at Darlington Works three months later. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", the face lightly cleaned. - Sold for £160 Lot 486 A London and North Eastern Railway woollen jacket with four brass scroll pattern buttons and the company initials in embroidery on each side of the collar, also a woollen peaked cap emboidereed with "LNER Signalman" in orange, size 67/8", Size 2. - Sold for £550 Lot 487 An LNER Worksplate Renumbering Strip "5489" from a Great Northern Railway Class J22, LNER J5 Class, 0-6-0 built at Doncaster, Works No 1275, in July 1910, GNR No 30. It became LNER No 3030 and was renumbered 5489 in 1946 when this plate would have been fitted over the previous number on its original 9"x5" plate. In BR days it became 65489 and was, with most of the others of the Class of 20 engines, shedded at Colwick from where it was withdrawn in December 1953. It was built by General Electric in South Africa, Works No 40490, in 1977. Cast aluminium oval 20_"x14" in ex loco condition with original green paintwork. - Sold for £70 Lot 493 A "Flamecut" Diesel Cabside Number Panel "25 114" from a BR Class 25 Bo-Bo No D5264 built by BR Derby and allocated new to Toton in April 1964. It was renumbered 25114 in February 1974, withdrawn from Cricklewood in February 1981 and cut up, apart from this panel and possibly the other side, at BREL Swindon the following July. Original paintwork, 35"x17_". - Sold for £45 Lot 494 A Locomotive Worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LTD, KILMARNOCK, CALEDONIA WORKS, No 465, 1960", from a BR Class 06 0-4-0DM D2438 which went ex Works in May 1960 to Ayr and was withdrawn from Dunfermline in November 1972. It was cut up at GH Campbell, Airdrie in December 1974. Cast aluminium oval, 9_"x7_", the front repainted green, the back untouched. - Sold for £380 Lot 495 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "TICKET OFFICE AND WAITING ROOM", double sided, 24"x18", excellent colour and shine, one side good with just a few tiny edge chips, the other has two small face chips. - Sold for £80 Lot 496 A Shedplate "41E", (Staveley Midland, 1958-65), the front repainted over original paintwork, the back untouched. - Sold for £80 Lot 497 A Locomotive Owners Plate "THE PROPERTY OF ANGLO-AMERICAN RHODESIAN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION LTD", believed to refer to the actual owning company of Wankie Colliery Ltd in Rhodesia and may have been attached to a loco owned by them. They purchased four 4-8-2s similar to the SAR Class 19D from North British Locomotive Co in 1954 and three ex SAR Class 16DA 4-6-2s which were later replaced by three ex Rhodesian Railway 19th Class 4-8-2s built by Henschel in 1951 and later bought or hired several RR 15th Class Garratts. Cast brass 13_"x5", the front cleaned and repainted red, the back untouched. - Sold for £90 Lot 498 A Great Northern Railway Viaduct Plate "G.N.R, 9", with casting code "B19" within the double border, 14_"x 10_", with scalloped corners, the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £80 Lot 499 A British Rail Inter City Station Sign "RUGBY", black lower case lettering on white with a maroon strip at top and base, double sided, 33"x13_", quite a stylish design compared to the plain BR white examples and a good substitute for that elusive "Rugby Midland" totem. - Sold for £120 Lot 500 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "NAIRN", (f/f), from the Highland Railway's Inverness to Keith (and Aberdeen) route.
