Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 19 January 2008

Lot 2 A Smokebox Numberplate "60093", from the LNER Gresley Class A3 4-6-2 "CORONACH" built at Doncaster, Works No 1703, in December 1928, original LNER number 2747, renumbered 93 in July 1946. It was allocated new to Doncaster but then moved around to Kings Cross, back to Doncaster, on to Haymarket before in January 1941 settling down at its long term home, Carlisle Canal, where it was to remain for the rest of its working life until official withdrawal in April 1962 and cutting up at Doncaster Works the following month. During its long stay at Carlisle Canal, "Coronach" was a regular performer over the gruelling Waverley route from Carlisle to Edinburgh. It takes its name from the racehorse owned by Lord Woolavington which won two Classics, the Derby and St Leger, in 1926, so a very current name at the time it was given to this engine. Repainted long ago, minor damage at outside edge of right bolt hole, where the plate was burnt off.
 This lot sold for £3400
