Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 19 January 2008

Lot 54 A Locomotive Nameplate "BRAUNTON", with its matching "WEST COUNTRY CLASS" Scroll, from the Southern Railway Bulleid "Light Pacific" 4-6-2 built at Brighton in November 1946, original number 21C146, becoming BR No 34046. It was allocated new to Exmouth Junction, but initially on loan to Salisbury, and moved to Brighton in 1951. In February 1959 it was rebuilt, involving the removal of the distinctive air-smoothed casing and other Bulleid extravaganza, and allocated to Bournemouth where it spent the remainder of its working life until withdrawal in October 1965. After about four months stored at Bournemouth shed, it was moved to Barry Docks from where it was rescued by preservationists with a view to restoration for use on a heritage railway. Eventually it was purchased by the West Somerset Railway Association and moved to Bishops Lydeard. It is currently undergoing restoration at Williton Works on the West Somerset Railway and is expected to be in running order later in 2008. The nameplate 63_" long, repainted over the original paintwork.
 This lot sold for £14000
