Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 12 July 2008

Lot 62 A Smokebox Numberplate "8494", from a (GWR) 9400 Class 0-6-0PT, one of a batch of 20 built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns, Works No 7464, in September 1952 as sub-contractors for Hudswell Clarke & Co who also allotted their own Works No 1843. It was allocated new to Ebbw Junction, later moving to Aberbeeg, Oxford and finally Didcot from where it was withdrawn in January 1962 after a working of little more than nine years. After six months in store at Swindon Works, it was cut up there the following July. The plate has very old red paintwork and unpainted numbers, this could be original paint in which case the colour used was probably a local initiative, to match the red cabsides of the early 1950s. The plate is probably a contractor casting as it is relatively heavy (in line with 84XX Cabsides).
 This lot sold for £280
