Lot 1 A Great Eastern Railway "Captain's Chair" with arms and decorative panelling to the back, designed to swivel on its base, the four legs arranged in cruciform pattern. The company initials are prominently carved on the back rail. Excellent condition, originally used at Liverpool Street and later Kings Cross. - Sold for £360

Lot 2 An enamel and brass watch chain Season Ticket "METROPOLITAN RAILWAY, 1ST, HARROW ON THE HILL & LIVERPOOL STREET VIA BAKER STREET. 7 / SEASON TICKET, R.H.SELBIE, GENL MANAGER", red, blue and white, 13/8" diameter, with a recess at the back in which to insert the name of the holder. A beautiful item in fine condition. - Sold for £140

Lot 3 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway pull bar Platform Ticket Machine, a compact free standing design rather than the usual taller examples, it retains its original enamel plates "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE Co, PLATFORM TICKETS 1d, TO BE GIVEN UP TO COLLECTOR", black and red on white with a pointing hand at the right side, a further plate is mounted below "PENNIES ONLY", between the two an engraved brass plate "PRESS PENNY IN SLOT AND PULL HANDLE, BENT OR BATTERED COINS MUST NOT BE USED" and a pointing hand and the word "SLOT". The front has cast floral decoration to the front with the original green paintwork with gold lining. It is complete with keys and in full working order, a bit of chipping to the ends of the enamel plates, though the lettering unaffected. A superb example. - Sold for £3000

Lot 4 A cast iron Boundary Post "BIRMINGHAM-SUTTON COLDFIELD", triangular shape to stand against a wall with a name on each face. It is complete with "foot" and decoration to the top and almost certainly relates to the town council boundaries. Overall 64" high of which 24" would be under the ground. - Sold for £50

Lot 5 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway signal box Block Instrument for double line with an engraved brass plate "CLEGG HALL", a brass commutator and cancel button. The box was near Rochdale Station. Good original condition, the case clearly stamped with the company's initials. - Sold for £190

Lot 6 A G.C.R China Coffee Cup and Saucer, each decorated with the full company coat of arms and "GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY COMPANY, GRIMSBY" in blue, with blue and gold edge bands. It was used on the company's steam ship "Grimsby", the name shown on a scroll below the arms. One hairline crack in the rim of the cup, hardly visible, otherwise excellent. - Sold for £150

Lot 7 A Great Western Railway presentation Walking Stick, with a silver band engraved "PRESENTED TO MR G.H.GWYNN, BY THE CARMARTHEN SIGNALLING G.W.R CLASS, SESSION 1922-23". The stick has a wooden shaft and horn handle, the hallmarked silver band has a couple of dents, overall length 33_". - Sold for £55

Lot 8 A Great Western Railway scroll pattern Platform Seat with two supports. The wood in good condition and painted green, a short example suitable for any garden. - Sold for £300

Lot 9 A Hull and Barnsley Railway First World War Railway Service Badge, brass with blue, white and red enamel, with button hole fixing. A fine example from one of the smaller companies which was absorbed by the North Eastern Railway just prior to the grouping. - Sold for £210

Lot 10 An LB&SCR/SR brass cased semaphore Signal Repeater, showing the rear of a distant signal on a brass post with finial. One tiny chip to the paint on the signal arm, otherwise fine original condition, the green face marked "SR". - Sold for £170

Lot 11 A BR(M), maroon Totem Sign "BACUP", (f/f), from the terminus of the Lancashire and Yorkshire branch from Bury (and also served by a line from Rochdale, closed 1952). The Bury route closed on 5th December 1966. Excellent colour and shine though a few scratches to the surface. It is, however, the first time an example from this station has been offered for sale. - Sold for £520

Lot 12 A BR(NE) tangerine enamel Doorplate, "TEA ROOM AND BAR", (f/f), with black edged lettering. A couple of tiny rim chips otherwise a fine example with excellent colour and shine. It would have been used at one of the larger stations on the Region and is possibly a unique wording. - Sold for £950

Lot 13 A North British Railway mounted Coat of Arms Transfer, featuring the company's twin shields showing a bear tethered to a fir tree and a castle with horse and lady, each decorated with thistles and roses and within a belted garter which bears the full company name. Overall 15"x17" and presented on a brown background. - Sold for £130

Lot 14 A Railway Letter Cancellation Stamp "SLINFOLD STATION, LB&SCRy", from the company's Brighton to Guildford route, situated just north west of Christ's Hospital. The station and line closed on 14th June 1965. These examples were originally issued by the Post Office for the cancellation of Railway Letter Stamps and have an oval brass head, 1_"x1", with a turned wooden handle, overall 3_" high. (The image shown in the catalogue has been reversed to show the wording as it would appear when used). - Sold for £240

Lot 15 A Locomotive Shedplate "75A", Brighton (1950 to June 1964). This ex LBSCR shed lost the bulk of its allocation of 60 locos towards the end of 1963 leaving only a few 2-6-4T and 2-6-2T to soldier on for the final five months. The front has been repainted over the original paintwork, the back in sooty condition with the BR(S) Eastleigh triangle. - Sold for £170

Lot 16 A set of Electric Locomotive Numbers "E3146", from a BR Class 86 25kv Bo-Bo electric loco built by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry, Works Nos 3727 and E387, in April 1966 for the West Coast Main Line. It was renumbered 86017 in August 1973, 86317 in February 1981 and 86417 in February 1985 and was named "The Kingman" from July 1985 until April 1993 in honour of The Kings Regiment. It was withdrawn in November 2003 and was cut up the following year at CF Booth, Rotherham. Cast aluminium, ex loco condition with blue/silver paint and brake dust to the rear. - Sold for £120

Lot 17 A Single Line Key Token "SHEPHERDS-PERRANPORTH", (alloy, replacement key end), from the Great Western Railway's Newquay to Chacewater branch which closed on 4th February 1963. - Sold for £140

Lot 18 An Isle of Wight Railway Mustard Spoon, with a belted garter on the handle marked "I of WR REFT DEPT", 4_" long, together with a small teaspoon with belted garter "VICTORIA STATION", 5_" long. (2) - Sold for £120

Lot 19 A Great Western Railway brass signal box Shelf Plate "FROM FRITWELL & SOMERTON", from the Oxford to Banbury route, Fritwell box being situated between Aynho Junction and Heyford, the adjacent station closing on 2nd November 1964. Engraved lettering, 4_"x1_", retaining most of its original wax infill. - Sold for £110

Lot 20 A BR(W), chocolate and cream Totem Sign "NEWPORT HIGH STREET", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's South Wales main line, excellent colour and shine, just the usual edge chips painted in. - Sold for £700

Lot 21 A North Eastern Railway brass signal box Shelf Plate "YORK LINES", with prominent engraved lettering and original wax infill, 14_"x1_", the front polished. - Sold for £110

Lot 22 A London and North Eastern Railway Damask Linen Table Cloth, for a single seat width Restaurant Car table. The cloth displays the full coat of arms in the centre with the "LNER-Forward" below and rose and thistle decoration at the edge, excellent condition. - Sold for £50

Lot 23 A large Locomotive Worksplate "BUILT BY THE BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON Co LTD, SMETHWICK, ENGLAND, 1958, SERIAL No DEL 45", from a BR Type 2 Class 26 Bo-Bo No 5300, the first of the Class, allocated new to Hornsey in July 1958. It was renumbered 26007 in April 1974 (the BR TOPS renumbering never used "000" numbers) and withdrawn from Inverness in May 1995. It was sold to MC Processors, Glasgow who sold it privately for preservation in about May 1997 and in May 1999 it was moved to Barrow Hill Roundhouse Museum for restoration. Cast brass rectangle, 8"x5_", ex loco condition. - Sold for £300

Lot 24 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway enamel Station Direction Sign "HINDLEY STATION L.Y.R." with a four-feathered arrow. The sign pointed to Hindley North Station on the Bolton to Wigan, Manchester and Liverpool routes. The sign is 22"x9_", in its original wooden frame to which a small bracket is attached. - Sold for £620

Lot 25 A Great Western Railway brass Cabside Numberplate "5339" from a 43XX Class 2-6-0 "Mogul" built at Swindon in January 1918. In its early years it was allocated to Cardiff Canton and Reading and in BR days Carmarthen, Newton Abbot, Exeter, Severn Tunnel Junction and St Philips Marsh from where it was withdrawn in November 1960 and cut up five months later at Swindon Works. Ex loco condition with original paintwork, the loco details stamped into the beading, "Engine Class 2-6-0K, Boiler Class D.G.". This lot includes original Swindon paperwork and loco history. - Sold for £1300

Lot 26 A framed poster "YELLOWAY MOTOR SERVICES, Day and Night Luxury Coach Service, Blackpool, Manchester, London" featuring a Burlingham Seagull Coach in yellow and orange livery. The company was based in Rochdale. Overall 23"x 33". - Sold for £300

Lot 27 A Railway Signal Co miniature Train Staff "ATHLONE EAST-73RD MILE BOX", from the Midland Great Western Railway's Athlone to Mullingar route. Tubular steel body with rings and brass cap inscribed with the names, a dent on one side. - Sold for £130

Lot 28 A Midland Railway large brass Signal Lever Description Plate "ADVANCE STARTING TO STAVELEY", from Bolsover signal box on the company's Staveley to Pleasley route, the southern end of which closed in 1930, leaving a branch from Staveley to Bolsover and Glapwell Colliery, until the section south of Bolsover closed in 1978. The plate is 143/8"x2_" with engraved lettering with some red wax infill remaining, the right end is rounded, the left square, with the whole plate slightly tapered toward the rounded end. - Sold for £270

Lot 29 A Webb and Thompson large single line Train Staff "HEATHFIELD-MAYFIELD", from the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's Redgate Mill Junction (Eridge) to Polegate route, known as the "Cuckoo Line". Passenger services were withdrawn on 14th June 1965, though freight traffic continued to use the section south of Heathfield until 1968. Tubular steel with brass rings and engraved brass nameplates. - Sold for £190

Lot 30 A BR(S), dark green Totem Sign "WOODSIDE", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's Lewisham to Addiscombe branch. Excellent colour and good shine, with a few minor rim chips on the edge of the white flange, neatly matched. - Sold for £350

Lot 31 A Great Western Railway Locomotive Pressure Gauge with polished brass face, prominently engraved with the company's initials and indicating 0-280 lbs per sq inch (red bar 200 ppsi), overall 8_" diameter with backplate, which is also marked "GWR". These early brass faced examples are undoubtedly the finest used by the company and date from the pre-grouping period. - Sold for £170

Lot 32 A Single Line Key Token "LLANBRYNMAIR-CEMMES ROAD" (cast steel, engraved brass plate), from the Moat Lane Junction to Machynlleth section of the Cambrian Railway's route to Aberystwyth. Both stations closed on 14th June 1965, the latter being the junction for the Mawddwy Railway which closed in 1930. - Sold for £210

Lot 33 A London and North Eastern Railway two aspect handlamp from Springhead Loco Shed, Hull. The top bears a brass plate "Sp.Head, No 60" while the side of the body is stamped "Sp.Hd, No 60" and embossed "LNER LOCO" opposite. The lamp is complete with its interior, brass bezel and piecrust top, although the internal white glass is cracked. Springhead was the former Hull and Barnsley Railway shed, situated in the north west of the city. - Sold for £230

Lot 34 A C.L.C cast iron Notice "CHESHIRE LINES CEE, NOTICE ANY PERSON OMITTING TO SHUT AND FASTEN THIS GATE IS LIABLE TO A PENALTY OF FORTY SHILLINGS", unrestored with original paintwork, 21"x14". The sign was removed from Stockport Tiviot Dale. - Sold for £130

Lot 35 A Smokebox Numberplate "43249", from a Midland Railway 1873 Class 0-6-0 No 1922 built by Neilson & Co, Works No 4055, in 1890. It was renumbered 3249 in 1907 and retained this number under the LMS as a Class 3F. Its BR sheds were Nottingham and Kettering from where it was withdrawn in December 1959. It was stored at Kettering until November 1962 and cut up the following month at Derby Works. Superb ex loco condition with soot and original paintwork. - Sold for £310

Lot 36 A Southern Railway enamel Seatback Plate "LYME REGIS", from the terminus of the branch line from Axminster on the Yeovil Junction to Exeter Central Main Line. It was built under The Light Railway Act in 1903 and closed on 29th November 1965. The station never had totems and this is believed to be the first example of a sign from "Lyme Regis" to be offered for sale. The plate is white on green, 48"x3", with excellent colour and shine and a few minor edge chips and a screw hole chip to the top left of the "M". - Sold for £1350

Lot 37 A Locomotive Worksplate "BEYER PEACOCK & Co LTD, 7522, BEYER GARRATT LOCOMOTIVE, BRITISH PATENTS.....MANCHESTER 1953", from a Rhodesian Railways 3'6" gauge 2-8-2+2-8-2 Class 16A Garratt No 644. It went to Zambia Railways in 1967 and was scrapped in about 1978. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6_", unrestored, though the paint cleaned from the front of the plate. - Sold for £150

Lot 38 A Locomotive Shedplate "71B", Bournemouth (1949 to September 1963). This ex LSWR shed had a substantial number of "namers" in its allocation of around 60 locos, most notably 7 Merchant Navies and 13 West Countries. The front repainted over the original paintwork, the back in untouched sooty condition with the BR(S) "Eastleigh" triangle cast in. - Sold for £100

Lot 39 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway china Finger Plate "L&Y RY, VICTORIA STATION MANCHESTER, CAFE OPPOSITE No1&2 PLATFORMS WITH LARGE GENERAL SMOKE ROOM AND ROOM FOR LADIES & CHILDREN", black on white, 3_"x1_", with decorative lettering and a little crazing, a lovely old example. - Sold for £200

Lot 40 A Great Eastern Railway silver-plated Coffee Pot with the company initials and bats wing device clearly engraved on the side, excellent condition, 6_" high with a decorative "finial" on the lid, manufactured by Elkington & Co. - Sold for £80

Lot 41 A BR(E), dark blue Totem Sign "APPLEBY", (f/f), from the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway's route to Grimsby and Cleethorpes and situated between Barnetby and Scunthorpe. The station, which was situated in open country at the point where the Roman road "Ermine Street" crosses the line, closed on 5th June 1967. Excellent colour and shine, though a few edge chips into the blue and face chip away from the letters. A scarce example offered only once before at auction. - Sold for £620

Lot 42 A Tyers North Eastern Railway Train Waiting Indicator, with tapper and small conical bell on top. A large engraved brass plate at the top reads "UP ADVANCE DARLINGTON LINE" behind the glazed face a circular aperture with a red bar on white background and the wording "RED AND WHITE DISC INDICATES TRAIN WAITING AT SIGNAL". A fine example, overall 17_" high, the case restored long ago. - Sold for £1100

Lot 43 An enamel Advertising Sign "SMOKE PLAYERS NAVY CUT TOBACCO AND CIGARETTES". The smaller version of the famous sign featuring a bearded sailor from H.M.S. Hero, with ships behind and a lifebelt surround. An excellent example, 22"x31_", multicoloured, the only chips are at the top corners, both filled, and the white background matched. The sign is presented in a wooden frame. - Sold for £280

Lot 44 A Rhymney Railway mounted Coat of Arms Transfer, featuring twin shields with a sailing ship and iron works above, overall 11_"x12" and presented on a dark green background. - Sold for £130

Lot 45 A BR(M) maroon Enamel Notice "FOR TRAINS TO PRESTON, BLACKPOOL - HORWICH", (f/f), with right and left arrows, probably from Bolton or Lostock Junction Stations. Excellent colour and shine, a few chips at the right side repainted. As Horwich did not have totems this is a rare opportunity to acquire a sign with the name. Only 36"x12" (roughly totem size). - Sold for £220

Lot 46 A London and North Eastern Railway enamel Lamp Tablet "ALNMOUTH", from the North Eastern Railway's Newcastle to Berwick section of the East Coast Main Line. The junction for Alnwick and originally Coldstream, it is still the principal station on this section of the route, with some Anglo Scottish expresses still calling. Brown on cream enamel, a chip on the left side of the "M" filled and neatly repainted and the usual flange edge chips similarly treated. - Sold for £160

Lot 47 A BR(Sc), light blue Totem Sign "DALMENY", (h/f), from the North British Railway's Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line and situated at the south end of the Forth Bridge. Good colour though some loss of shine, a thin vertical repair between the N & Y, lettering not affected. - Sold for £360

Lot 48 A Southern Railway enamel Target Sign "EXETER CENTRAL", from the company's new station built in 1933 to replace the cramped facilities of the London and South Western Railway's Queen Street Station on the same site. The targets on platform 1 and 2 were all wooden, with the enamel versions being on platform 3 and the Exmouth Bay (No 4), the enamel versions therefore being rather scarcer than one might think. This example is an original 1933 sign with the suffix around the lower edge. It would, therefore, have been on the main platform west of the New North Road overbridge, the two examples on the platform extension east of the bridge bearing the name in the centre panel. Excellent colour and shine, screw hole and edge chips filled and expertly colour matched. - Sold for £2300

Lot 49 An enamel Advertising Sign "ROYAL BLUE EXPRESS SERVICES, BOOK HERE, PROPRIETORS, WESTERN NATIONAL AND SOUTHERN NATIONAL COMPANIES, 48-50 QUEEN STREET EXETER", dark and light blue, black and cream, featuring a map of the system in the West Country and connections to the North, Derby, Notts, etc. 20"x30", excellent condition but for one or two minor marks. - Sold for £230

Lot 50 A BR(W) double royal Poster "EXETER CATHEDRAL, Travel by Train", by A.Carr Linford (PR169/60), an impressive exterior view of the West Front, with several cars parked to the left and tourists in the foreground. Rolled with folds, corner pin holes in edge of border, otherwise fine. - Sold for £150

Lot 51 A BR(M), maroon Totem Sign "BROAD GREEN", (f/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Liverpool to Manchester route, between St Helens and Edge Hill. Excellent colour and shine, a few chips and a little distortion to the flange by the bolt holes, otherwise a fine example. - Sold for £420

Lot 52 A small wooden Carriage Board, "WINDERMERE/MANCHESTER", with the original cream on maroon paintwork and steel straps at the ends, 28"x 3_". - Sold for £110

Lot 53 A Locomotive Worksplate "BRUSH TRACTION No 183, 1960, ENGLAND", from a BR Class 31 A1A-A1A diesel loco D5583 allocated new to Stratford in January 1960. It was renumbered 31165 in March 1974. It spent most of its life away from Stratford but returned there in 1987 and was the last loco overhauled at Stratford Depot before its closure on 31st March 1991, in commemoration of which it was repainted as D5583 and named "Stratford Major Depot" on 26th March by Alf Buffett, former Stratford Repair Shop Manager. The nameplates were removed in September 1994 and the loco was sold to Harry Needle in April 1998 for spares and broken up on his behalf at Adtranz Crewe Works the following September. Cast aluminium oval, 9_"x55/8", ex loco condition with original BR blue paintwork. - Sold for £480

Lot 54 An LMS/BR(M) maroon Fingerboard from Bangor Station "LLANFAIRFECHAN, PENMAENMAWR, LLANDUDNO JCT, COLWYN BAY, RHYL, PRESTATYN, CHESTER, CREWE, STAFFORD, RUGBY, BLETCHLEY, LONDON (EUSTON)", with feathered arrow, 60"x5_". - Sold for £220

Lot 55 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "WEST CLIFF-KETTLENESS", (brass/steel), from the North Eastern Railway's Whitby West Cliff to Middlesbrough route which closed on 5th May 1958. This was a magnificent coastal section, the line on the cliff's edge in places and including the typical iron viaducts and Sandsend and Kettleness Tunnels. - Sold for £960

Lot 56 A "SUPER SHELL" glass petrol pump globe in the shape of a shell, dark blue and red lettering on pale blue. - Sold for £230

Lot 57 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "SALTCOATS CENTRAL", (h/f), from the Glasgow and South Western Railway's Kilwinning to Ardrossan and Largs branch, close to the Isle of Arran. The suffix was added on 30th June 1952 but dropped on 4th February 1965, after which the station was re-signed, explaining why this is quite a scarce totem. Good colour though some loss of shine due to the station's proximity to the sea. - Sold for £660

Lot 58 A Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway cast iron Boundary Post, from Worsborough Incline, tombstone shape. The front marked "MS&LRY", repainted, overall 37_" high. - Sold for £260

Lot 59 A Great Western Railway gauge for measuring the wear or accuracy of the key at the end of a Webb and Thompson train staff. Cylindrical in shape, 2" height and diameter and prominently stamped "GWR STAFF KEY GAUGE". An unusual item, lightly cleaned and polished. - Sold for £130

Lot 60 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "FLEETWOOD", (f/f), from the terminus of the L&Y and LNWR branch just north of Blackpool which closed on 18th April 1966, though freight traffic continued to use the line as far as Wyre Dock Junction until 1992. Good colour and shine, three small chips, otherwise good. - Sold for £720

Lot 61 A North Eastern Railway Leather Cash Bag with an engraved oval brass plate "N.E.R, WESTGATE-IN-WEARDALE", from the company's Darlington to Wearhead branch which closed to passengers on 29th June 1953. Freight traffic lasted to Westgate until 1968, after which the line was cut back to Eastgate Cement Works, this plant ensuring the eastern part of the line survived. - Sold for £110

Lot 62 A set of three Great Western Railway cast iron Platform Seat Supports with the company's roundel cast on the sides. Two were actually used at Bude (LSWR), being moved there by BR(W) in the 1950s, the third is from Keynsham and Somerdale, though all three are of a matching pattern. (3) - Sold for £450

Lot 63 A set of Great Northern Railway Company oval cast iron nameplates from a Goods Yard Loading Gauge, (a) GNR, 6"x4", the back marked GNRS, (b) GER, 6"x4", (c) L&NWR, 6_"x4", each with raised lettering and bevelled edge, the fronts repainted. The plates were fitted to the vertical support of a goods yard loading gauge beside the hook for adjusting the gauge to that of the relevant company. - Sold for £210

Lot 64 A Smokebox Numberplate "48122" from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8122 built at Crewe in 1939. At the end of its LMS days it was allocated to Staveley but spent most of its BR years at Willesden before moving to Northampton, then Rugby and finally Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn in February 1967 and, after six months in store there, cut up at Drapers, Hull the following August. The numbers have been repainted but the plate is otherwise in its original condition. - Sold for £380

Lot 65 A BR(Sc), double royal Poster "RIVER FINDHORN, NEAR FORRES, on the route from Aberdeen to Inverness", by Jack Merriott, (B32991). A view of a green four-car Swindon Cross Country D.M.U. heading for Inverness on the banks of the River Findhorn, the town of Forres visible in the background. Rolled with folds with small tape marks at corners, otherwise good. - Sold for £60

Lot 66 A South Eastern Railway brass Paperweight, featuring the company's coat of arms, overall 35/8"x4_". It features a shield with cross and horse with lion, ship and castle at the top. - Sold for £340

Lot 67 An LNER circular china Wash Stand Bowl, with the blue company monogram (GNR style) prominently displayed on the top and blue bands to the rim and side. A large piece produced by Mintons, 15" diameter, 5_" high. - Sold for £95

Lot 68 A Diesel shunter Builder's Nameplate "NORTH BRITISH", which would have been mounted above the radiator at the front of one of the Diesel Shunters built by the company. Chromed steel, 34"x3_", with chevron shaped ends, in ex loco condition. - Sold for £120

Lot 69 A cast aluminium Road Sign "HORSE DRAWN VEHICLES AND ANIMALS" (with arrow), 24"x20", the lettering repainted, otherwise original condition. The sign would have been displayed at a cattle grid, pointed to the gated route at the side. - Sold for £160

Lot 70 A BR(M), maroon Totem Sign "MOSSLEY", (f/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Manchester to Leeds route, situated just north of Stalybridge on the climb towards Standedge Tunnel. Excellent colour and shine, a couple of edge chips at the base just into the white border. - Sold for £360

Lot 74 A Great Northern Railway Mile Post from the Witham Navigation "G.N.R, W.N. _", overall 53_" high including foot. This waterway ran from Lincoln to Boston following the railway for much of its length. The catalogue illustration shows the top section of the post only. - Sold for £80

Lot 75 A French Electric Locomotive front Numberplate "BB 9217" from a French Railways Class BB9200 1500 volts dc electric loco, one of a batch of 92 locos built by Schneider-Jeumont and CEM France between 1957 and 1964 for high speed services at more than 160 kph. The loco is still in service, renumbered 109217. Incorporating the company roundel "SNCF" below with decorative speed whiskers at sides. Overall 80"x26", curved to fit the loco. The front polished and back untouched. A set of brackets to mount the plate on a wall are supplied. - Sold for £360

Lot 79 A London and South Western Railway Milepost "204", which was situated on the down platform at Bridestowe Station, just west of Okehampton. Cast iron oval, 17"x8", the front cleaned but unpainted, the back with original green paint and post mark. Lot 80 A North Eastern Railway Train Staff "RIPLEY JNC & PATELEY BRIDGE", from the company's Nidd Valley branch which left the Leeds to Northallerton main line just to the north of Harrogate. Passenger services were withdrawn on 2nd April 1951, although freight traffic continued until 1964. The cylindrical body is stamped in serif lettering and has a shaped wooden handle with a split, a brass band has been added long ago, which in turn has also split. A lovely old staff, probably used with the staff and ticket system, overall 16_" long. - Sold for £500

Lot 81 An enamel Advertising Sign "WATSONS MATCHLESS CLEANSER, IS THE BEST SOAP FOR ALL PURPOSES", an unusual shaped plate which originally formed the back panel of a chair in a grocer's shop. It measures 11" wide at the base and 14" at the top, 14" deep and is slightly curved in profile. The lettering is white on blue, with the manufacturer's name and product in reverse colours. A few minor face chips and a little edge chipping, otherwise a fine example. - Sold for £80

It controlled the connection between the main line, the London Tilbury and Southend line to East Ham and the Tottenham and Forest Gate route. White lettering and border on dark blue, 49"x17", excellent colour and shine, just chip and a little rust on flange repainted. - Sold for £340

Lot 86 An LNER/BR(E) three aspect Handlamp with a brass plate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, LINCOLN PASS 6". The lamp is complete and unrestored, the side embossed "BR(E)". It would have been used at Lincoln Central Station. - Sold for £50

Lot 87 A brass Shedplate "52A", Gateshead (1949 to 1978). This ex LNER shed used these brass codes on their fleet of diesel locos, Class 46s and Class 55 "Deltics" being of note. Black with the characters lightly polished. - Sold for £200

Lot 88 A London and North Eastern Railway enamel Shed Allocation Plate "MEXBORO". This ex MS&LR shed used this code from about 1925 until the BR cast iron code was adopted in 1949. Lot 89 A BR(NE), tangerine enamel Departure Board "MARKET WEIGHTON, POCKLINGTON, FANGFOSS, STAMFORD BRIDGE, EARSWICK, YORK", double sided with wooden surround and two hanging hooks, overall 42"x11_". The board was used at Beverley for trains on the Hull to York direct route which closed between Beverley North Junction and Bootham Junction (York) on 29th November 1965. The enamel plate has an excellent colour and shine, while the surround is in sound condition with its original paintwork. - Sold for £1850

Lot 90 A London and North Eastern Railway cast iron Seatback Plate "AIRDRIE", from the North British Railway's station situated just east of Coatbridge on the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Bathgate route. Passenger services east of Airdrie ceased on 9th January 1956, after which the station became the branch terminus for services from Glasgow. The plate is in completely original condition with Scottish region light blue paintwork, 26" long. - Sold for £130

Lot 96 A Locomotive Nameplate and Worksplate Set "HUSSAR", from an 0-4-0ST with outside cylinders built by Andrew Barclay, Works No 1441, in 1919 and which went new to The Staffordshire Coal and Iron Co Ltd, in 1939. The ownership was transferred to Settle Speakman and Co who purchased the company. The nameplate is cast brass, 28_"x6", with scalloped corners and serif lettering. The matching worksplate "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co LIMITED, CALEDONIA WORKS No 1441, 1919 KILMARNOCK", is a cast brass oval, 16_"x11_". The fronts of both plates are cleaned and polished but with the original red paintwork, the backs untouched. (2) - Sold for £1000

Lot 97 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Signal Box Nameboard "LOSTOCK HALL ENGINE SHED", from the Burscough Junction to Blackburn line and situated just south of Preston. The sheds were famous in being the last to survive, continuing until August 1968. 125"x10_", maroon background, a small portion broken from the end of the "E" and painted in, during its time on the box. - Sold for £840

Lot 98 A "Robey" Regulator Valve Indicator Plate "ROBEY & Co LIMITED ENGINEERS, LINCOLN, No 3077, OPEN/SHUT". Although the company is known to have built a few steam railway locos, its major products were steam wagons, steam rollers and portable steam engines. Circular cast brass, 9" diameter, with a double rim to the rear, with hand engraved "OPEN/SHUT" lettering, much of which retains its black wax infill. This example is from a portable steam engine and dates from around 1875, a rare and early plate in ex loco condition. - Sold for £540

Lot 100 A Great Eastern Railway Platform Lamp with a glass name plate "BARNHAM", the name in raised blue lettering on an opaque background, the right end affecting part of the "M" broken away, complete with vessel and burner. The station was on the Great Eastern Railway's Bury St Edmunds to Thetford route, a little used line which lost its passenger services on 8th June 1953 and was finally closed to freight and dismantled in 1960. A rare survivor. - Sold for £260

Lot 106 A Southern Railway enamel Target Sign "BERE ALSTON", from the London and South Western Railway's main line to Plymouth, a junction station situated between Tavistock and St Budeaux. The line north to Okehampton closed on 6th May 1968 after which the station became a terminus, with the branch trains reversing out to Gunnislake. Excellent colour and shine, two tiny chips repaired on the green, all the white unaffected, the usual minor chips at the edge, a fine example. - Sold for £600

Lot 107 A Smokebox Numberplate "32408", from a London Brighton & South Coast Railway E6 Class 0-6-2T built at Brighton in 1904 for goods duties, LBSCR No 408 and named "Binderton", allocated new to Battersea and later St Leonards. The painted name was removed by 1911 and it became SR 2408 and BR 32408. The loco spent almost all its BR days at Bricklayers Arms before moving right at the end to Feltham and Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in December 1962 and cut up at the nearby Works two months later. This is one of only two E6 smokebox numberplates to appear in auction. Ex loco condition with some original paintwork - Sold for £900

Lot 112 A Stockton and Darlington Railway three aspect Handlamp with a square, box shaped front, the side bears its embossed brass plate "S&D.R" and the original vessel a brass maker's plate "LOWE & SLEIGH", with crown in centre. The lamp is complete other than the red glass with piecrust top and wire top and rear handles. The vessel does however need its bracket soldering to the lamp base. A rare and early example in fine original condition. - Sold for £1100

Lot 113 An LMS "Hawkseye" target sign "OLD NORTH ROAD", from the London and North Western Railway's Oxford to Cambridge route and situated between Gamlingay and Lords Bridge on the closed section east of Sandy, which lost its services on 1st January 1968. At the station the line crosses Ermine Street, the Roman Road to the north whose role had been replaced by the A1. The sign is in original ex station condition with its Eastern Region dark blue paintwork over the earlier LMS yellow textured surface. An example has not been offered for sale at auction previously. - Sold for £1250

Lot 115 A Great Northern Railway Signal Box Instrument for double line, with an ivorine plate "LANGLEY" and indicating "Train Entered Section/Blocked/Line Clear", one line with a circular needle, the other with a large pointer below a commutator, tapper and cancel button and at the top, above a brass block bell with a square case mounted on top has been added. The plate refers to Langley Junction which is between Welwyn and Hitchin where the north end of the Hertford loop joins the East Coast Main Line. - Sold for £380

The section to Allhallows closed completely on 4th December 1961, though freight continues to use the rest of the line as far as Grain. - Sold for £270

Lot 122 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Signal Box Nameboard "BACUP SHED", from a box just south of Bacup station on the branch to Rochdale (via Facit), which closed to passengers on 16th June 1947 and completely in 1952, the short section from the station to the engine sheds surviving until the Bacup to Bolton branch closed in 1966. Cast letters on wood with beading, 68"x10_", repainted. - Sold for £1000

Lot 123 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "DAVA - GRANTOWN ON SPEY WEST", (brass), from the Highland Railway's Aviemore to Forres section, the "old" route to Inverness. The eight mile section includes Dava Summit (1052 ft) and a four mile climb at 1 in 80. The line lost its main line status with the opening of the direct route to the Highland capital in 1898 and finally closed on 18th October 1965. - Sold for £320

Lot 124 A Smokebox Numberplate "44475", from a LMS Class 4 (later 4F) 0-6-0 built at St Rollox in 1928. Lot 126 A Locomotive Nameplate "INVER", from a Donegal Railway 3' gauge 4-6-0T No 6 built by Neilson & Co, Works No 4575, in 1893 and named after the residence of one of the Railway's directors. In 1906 the Railway was taken over by the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee and the loco became their Class 2 but retained its original number. It was withdrawn in 1931. Cast brass rectangle, 13_"x4_", with black paintwork, under which some earlier red is visible. - Sold for £2800

Lot 129 A Shedplate "52J", Borough Gardens (October 1958 to June 1959), then South Gosforth (January 1964 to May 1973). The ex NER shed, situated in Gateshead, had an allocation of 44 locos when it closed. The code was revived in 1964 when the DMU depot at South Gosforth adorned the majority of its power cars and trailers with these plates. Completely untouched with original paintwork. - Sold for £50

Lot 134 A Locomotive Builder's Plate "THE GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD, BUILDERS, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co LTD", from the BR Class 84 25kv B0-B0 electric loco E3036, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 27793, in March 1960 and allocated new to Longsight. It was renumbered 84001 in December 1972 and withdrawn from Crewe Electric Depot in January 1979. It was set aside for preservation and moved to the NRM in May 1979 and has subsequently been displayed at Barrow Hill Roundhouse Museum and at Doncaster Works for the "Plant 150" exhibition. The plate is in ex loco condition other than the back being marked E3036 in pen. - Sold for £100

Overall 43"x7" and 3" deep, excellent condition other than a small portion of the glass panel at the back missing. The station was situated on the Whitby and Pickering line and closed to passengers (south of Grosmont) on 8th March 1965. The lamp has a painted steel body, glazing to three sides and a polished copper top of "inverted saucer" shape, overall 28" high. The rear panel is white enamel. - Sold for £320

Lot 139 A London and North Eastern Railway 8" dial Wall Clock with fusee movement. The original face is marked "LNER 9981", the clock is complete with its key and pendulum, has doors to the base and right side, a cast brass bezel and is in working order. - Sold for £960

Lot 140 A Smokebox Numberplate "44455" from a LMS Class 4 (later 4F) 0-6-0 built at Crewe in 1928, Works No 5810. A long time Stoke engine, it was withdrawn from there in March 1963 and cut up at Derby Works five months later. The numbers repainted, signs of a weld repair on the back, long before the locomotive was withdrawn as there is a good build up of soot and rust in the area. - Sold for £270

Lot 141 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign "COALVILLE TOWN", (h/f), from the Midland Railway's Leicester London Road to Burton On Trent route. The station closed on 7th September 1964, though the route continues to be used for freight. Excellent colour and shine, a chip repair on the centre of the "N" and a couple of other minor chips and blemishes. - Sold for £920

The company was later known as the County Donegal Railway Joint Committee and operated the narrow gauge system in the North West of Ireland. 22"x13", a hairline crack at the top centre bolthole. - Sold for £430

Lot 148 A BR(M) maroon Totem Sign, "MERSEY ROAD & AIGBURTH", (f/f), from the Cheshire Lines Committee's Liverpool Central to Manchester and Southport route, situated on the Mersey between St Michaels and Garston and closed on 17th April 1972. Good colour but some loss of shine, a face drilled example with the usual chipping around the screw fixings, the flanges have not been reduced although there was some wasting at three of the horizontal screw fixings when the totem was removed. A rare example never having been offered for sale or known to have survived. - Sold for £800

Lot 150 A BR(Sc) light blue Totem Sign "DRUMPARK", (f/f), from the Caledonian Railway's Glasgow to Airdrie route, though the station was latterly served by Motherwell trains until its closure on 5th October 1964. A scarce example only offered for sale once before, good colour though loss of shine, a chip repair in the lower panel (below the U) neatly filled and repainted. - Sold for £220

Lot 151 An early "NESTLES MILK CHOCOLATE" vending machine the face marked "The Richest In Cream, Full Size, 2d a Packet", 14"x41", height 29", 16" base, "BAC" Ltd Gold. The machine has a rectangular body with "Nestles" shaped pediment and has two columns with glazing and enamel plates. It is of cast iron construction and stands in a circular tapered column, marked "BAC" (British Automatic Company), overall height 70", width 14", base 16" (when dismantled the sections are 41" and 29" high). A superb example in original working condition with keys and a few old chocolate bars. - Sold for £5000

Lot 155 A Lancaster and Preston Junction cast brass Badger, as fitted to the parapet of a bridge on the West Cost Main Line which crossed the line at Brock Water Troughs just south of Garstang. The company fitted these adornments due to the name Brock and the bridge was always known as the "Badger Bridge". The bridge was partially demolished in 1970 at the time of the Weaver Junction to Glasgow electrification, the upper part being replaced by a standard concrete structure. Many years later a stonemason was commissioned to carve a replacement badger on the bridge, which is still in situ. This original brass example is 15"x7", the front has been lightly polished. - Sold for £660

Lot 156 A road sign "ROAD NARROWS" with two converging lines, each with five reflectors (two missing), the maker's name "Fairylites Ltd London NW 10" cast on the front. The sign is repainted over the original paintwork, 12_"x21_", with the mounting slots intact. - Sold for £50

Lot 159 A Single Line Key Token "FARNINGHAM ROAD - GRAVESEND WEST", (brass), from the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's branch to Gravesend, which left the Swanley to Rochester route at Fakenham Junction. Passenger services were withdrawn on 3rd August 1953 with freight continuing until 1968, when the Gravesend to Southfleet section closed. The remainder of the branch survived another eight years. - Sold for £190

Lot 162 A Great Western Railway 12" dial Trunk Clock with chain driven fusee movement and complete with pendulum, key, brass bezel and ivorine numberplate "G.W.R.1871" on the front. An attractive example, the face marked with Roman numerals and the GWR roundel which is repainted. There is a little restoration/loss to veneer in places at the base, the side and base doors are in good order though the latch has a replacement knob, otherwise fine and in good working order. - Sold for £1400

Lot 163 A North Eastern Railway cast brass Barrow Plate "MIDDLETON - IN - TEESDALE", together with the numberplate "N.E.R, 12944". The station was the terminus of the branch from Barnard Castle and closed to passenger traffic on 30th November 1964, freight traffic ceasing in early 1965. The nameplate is 15"x1_", the front polished, the numberplate 8_" and in original condition. - Sold for £250

Lot 165 A Locomotive Shedplate "70A", Nine Elms (1950 to July 1967). This ex LSWR depot was London's last bastion of SR steam. Home to around 100 locos in the 1950s, by 1965 it still had charge of 40 locos including seven Standard 5MT "namers" and a handful of West Countries. The front repainted over the original paintwork, the back completely untouched and displaying the BR(S) Eastleigh triangle. - Sold for £300

Lot 166 An LMS sepia Carriage Print "ST ASAPH", (photographic), featuring the river bridge and town beyond, once served by the L.N.W.R Rhyl to Denbigh line. The print is presented in an original compartment frame. There is a small imperfection at the top left edge affecting only the sky. - Sold for £40

Lot 167 A Great North of Scotland Railway Leather Cash bag with a large engraved brass plate "ROTHIE-NORMAN", with scalloped corners. The station was on the Inveramsey to Macduff branch, which closed to passengers on 1st of October 1951, the northern part of the route closed to freight in 1961, with the remainder, south of Turriff, lasting until 1966. The name is engraved in lower case script lettering with the hyphen between the words (the hyphen also appears in other station names for no apparent reason (e.g. King-Edward, New-Machar)) dating the bag to the 1870s-1890s period and, as was the standard company practice, the initials of the company were not shown on the plate. - Sold for £150

Lot 169 A North Eastern Railway enamel Signal Box Nameboard "GARTON SLACK", from the Company's Malton and Driffield route across the Yorkshire Wolds. Garton was the first station out of Driffield and this sign was used at the level crossing on the Garton to Kirkburn road. Passenger services were withdrawn on 5th June 1950, with freight lasting until 1958. The sign has cream lettering and border on reddish brown, with a thin black edge band, 42"x7", excellent colour and shine, minor edge chips and bears the maker's name "ORME EVANS Ltd, W'hampton" at the centre base. It is displayed in its original chamfered backboard, which has been repainted. - Sold for £560

Lot 170 A Smokebox Numberplate "52248", from a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 11 Class 0-6-0, built at Horwich in September 1894, L&Y No 1252, becoming LMS 12248 and BR Class 3F 52248. A long time Lees engine, it was withdrawn from there in March 1962, and after eight months in store at its home shed, cut up at Central Wagon Co, Ince, Wigan the following October. The plate is in original unrestored condition, probably ex loco, though the numbers may have been repainted long ago. - Sold for £400

The box was on the Bolton to Preston route at the south end of the triangle which gave access to the Horwich branch and works. Overall 51"x12", repainted on the front. - Sold for £580

Lot 186 A Great Western Railway Signal Box Nameboard "THAME SIGNAL BOX", from the Princes Risborough to Kennington Junction (Oxford) route. Passenger services were withdrawn on 7th January 1963. The line was severed as a through route in 1967 with the closure of the Thame to Morris Cowley section and Thame box closed in November 1968, while freight to Thame continued until 1991. This is an early plate (the box opening in 1891), as it is shown in the GWR signal box nameboard order register on page 16 of 325 pages, 70_" long, repainted brown on cream, the back primered. - Sold for £900

Lot 189 A London and North Eastern Railway double royal Poster "LINCOLN, on the LNER of England and Scotland" by Fred Taylor, featuring a fine view of the cathedral and town. The text on travel arrangements is repeated in French, so it was produced for the foreign market for display either in France or Canada. Neat repairs to tears at top and base, no loss. - Sold for £110

Lot 190 A North Eastern Railway brass gangers single line Occupation Key "ALSTON - LAMBLEY", from the company's Northumberland branch which left the Newcastle and Carlisle line at Haltwhistle, terminating at Alston (England's highest market town). The line survived in use until the 3rd May 1976 as a basic railway, operated by a two car D.M.U, one of the last branch lines to close. The key is 3_" long with a brass chain, and was attached to a motorised trolley by means of a flexible wire. When the trolley was removed from the running line the key could be inserted in a lineside instrument, which by the length of the wire indicates that the trolley was clear of the line, which was then available for the passage of a train. - Sold for £250

Lot 191 A BR(E) dark blue Totem Sign "SUTTON-ON-SEA", (f/f), from the Great Northern Railway's Lincolnshire Coast loop line via Sutton and Mablethorpe, which left the Boston to Grimsby route at Willoughby and rejoined it at Louth. The north end of the loop closed in 1960, the south end and Sutton on 5th October 1970. Excellent colour and shine, two small chips on the black flange, just into the white edge, by the top screw holes. - Sold for £1550

Lot 192 A South African Railways Locomotive Nameplate "GLENCOE", from a South African Railways Class 12A 4-8-2 No 2122 built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22762, in 1921. It was later re-boilered and re-classified to Class 12AR. Initially the Class was confined to the Transvaal but during the 1960s were working in other areas, No 2122 moving to Glencoe depot from which it took its name. As the depot's most popular engine, it was always kept in immaculate condition. Cast brass, overall dimensions 49"x15", ornately shaped with decoration and an antelope and winged wheel at the right end, the front cleaned and repainted. - Sold for £1050

Lot 193 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Signal Box Nameboard "WARDLEWORTH", from the Rochdale to Bacup branch, which closed to passengers on 16th June 1947, though freight continued as far as Whitworth for another twenty years. Lot 194 A North Eastern Railway 10" dial Wall Clock with chain driven fusee movement. The face is marked "BR 1536" and has red figures for the "24 hour" clock added. The movement is clearly stamped 1536 and the right-hand door bears an old label inside, titled "North Eastern Railway" and providing instructions for regulating the clock and again marked with the number (red print on white). The clock is in working order complete with key and pendulum and unusually the key to the base door. The clock was last used at Norwich Thorpe station. - Sold for £520

Lot 201 A Smokebox Numberplate "90555", from a War Department "Austerity" 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 4905, in August 1943, WD No 77089 and loaned new to the LNER. It was loaned to the GWR in 1944 but returned to the WD the following year and transported to Holland for use by the Dutch Railways as their No 4332. On returning to the UK it was again loaned to the LNER in 1947 and was taken into BR stock the following year becoming 90555 and first allocated to St Margarets. It spent most of its BR life, however, at Bury before moving at the end to Agecroft from where it was withdrawn in June 1964 and, after six months in store there, was cut up at Central Wagon Co, Ince, Wigan the following December. The plate has been repainted, but some paint since removed from the front. - Sold for £440

A lovely old hand engraved tablet, the face stamped "Not In Use", as was the custom at the Exeter Central S&T Dept when tablets were made available to collectors in the 1960s. - Sold for £400

Lot 219 A BR(M), maroon Totem Sign "BLACKPOOL CENTRAL", (h/f), from the famous seaside terminus of the route from Preston, operated by the Lancashire and Yorkshire and London and North Western Railways, the terminus closing on 2nd November 1964 in a rash move to deprive the town centre of rail services. Excellent colour and shine, though edge and face chips repainted in common with the two other examples offered at auction previously. By far the rarest of the three Blackpool Totems. - Sold for £700

Lot 223 A Single Line Key Token "PORTSMOUTH ARMS-UMBERLEIGH", from the London and South Western Railway's Exeter to Ilfracombe route. A scenic section in the Taw Valley, the station named after the nearby pub and surprisingly still open and served by trains to Barnstaple. Although the main road passes the station there is no other close habitation, only a few villages several miles distant. The key has a second notch in the end. - Sold for £160

Passenger services ceased on 13th April 1931, though freight lasted until 1964. The seal has a 1" diameter brass head and turned wooden handle, overall 3_" long. The catalogue image has been reversed to show the detail as it would appear when used. - Sold for £320

Lot 228 An early Tyers wooden cased semaphore signal repeater with combined Light In/Out indicator with a red distant arm and "ON" indicated and a post with finial below a circular aperture with "LIGHT ON/OFF" indicators. The case has been repolished. - Sold for £260

Lot 229 A Great Western Railway brass Cabside Numberplate "4264" from a 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon in October 1919. It spent its early years at Ebbw Junction and Pontypool Road and in BR days was allocated to Aberdare, Neath, Newport Pill and Swansea East Dock from where it was withdrawn in July 1963. It was cut up by Cohens at nearby Morriston the following January. The front repainted black, the back untouched, the beading bears the usual stamping "Engine Class T, 2-8-0, D" and "Boiler Class D.G". - Sold for £720

Lot 231 A Tyers No 1 Single Line Tablet "NORWICH-DRAYTON", (brass/steel), from the final section of the Midland and Great Northern Railway's Melton Constable to Norwich City route which closed on 2nd March 1959, with freight lasting another decade. The branch was one of the few parts of the M&GN to live on, being connected to the Great Eastern Railway's Wroxham to Dereham line in 1960 by means of a new spur near Reepham, the last section north of Lenwade lasting until 1983. - Sold for £500

Lot 232 A Locomotive Nameplate "THE LORD PROVOST", from a BR Class 47 Type 4 Co-Co D1942 built by Brush, Works No 704, in June 1966 and allocated new to London Midland (Western Lines). It was renumbered 47499 in February 1974 and 47709 in September 1979 when it was allocated to Haymarket as one of the Class 47/7s dedicated to working the famous Glasgow-Edinburgh push-pull service, all of which received names associated with the area, this loco being named after the Scottish equivalent of a Lord Mayor south of the border. The nameplates were removed in January 1991 after the loco moved to Old Oak Common. It was later sold to Waterman Railways in 1994 and to Fragonset in 1997. The current owner is Direct Rail Services who are in the process of re-instating the loco for main line use. The nameplate is accompanied by its original BR Collectors Corner receipt. Cast aluminium, 65_"x10_" in ex loco condition, with original red paintwork and plenty of oxidization on the back. - Sold for £4000

Lot 233 A BR(M) maroon enamel Sign "SWANBOURNE", from the London and North Western Railway's Oxford to Cambridge route situated between Verney Junction and Bletchley. Passenger services ceased on 1st January 1968 with the Oxford to Bletchley section remaining open for freight traffic. 96"x16". The station never had totems so probably the only chance to obtain a maroon enamel with this name. - Sold for £120

Lot 234 A Painting of LNER J6 Class 0-6-0, No 64180 at Lincoln, the loco is returning to Holmes shed and is seen crossing the River Witham at Brayford, the town and cathedral prominent in the background. Lot 239 An LMS "Hawkseye" Target Sign "THORNTON-IN-CRAVEN", from the Midland Railway's Skipton to Colne branch, which at Colne met the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's route to Preston. The station, and the Midland section of the route, closed on 2nd February 1970. The sign is cast aluminium, 71" long, unrestored with its original maroon paintwork. The station never carried totems and this is the first target to be offered for sale at auction. - Sold for £500

Lot 247 A Locomotive Worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 61317, NB LOCO Co, 1948" from a B1 Class 4-6-0 No 61317 built in May 1948 and allocated to Darnall. It moved later to Norwich, Lincoln and finally Immingham from where it was withdrawn in September 1962. Following six months in store at Immingham, it was cut up at Cohens, Rotherham in April 1963. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", cleaned and the front background repainted. - Sold for £210

Lot 248 A Locomotive Nameplate and Worksplate Set "WESTWOOD"., together with its worksplate "HUDSWELL, CLARKE & Co LTD RAILWAY FOUNDRY, No 1036, LEEDS, 1913", from a 0-4-0ST with outside cylinders which went new to Platt Brothers, Moston Colliery, Moston, Manchester, ownership transferred to the N.C.B in 1947. The loco then worked at a number of collieries in the area before finally being moved to Ravenhead Colliery in 1967. The colliery closed on the 18th of October 1968 and the locomotive was scrapped on site the following month. The nameplate is cast brass 33"x65/8", with serif lettering, the front is repainted, the back untouched and in completely ex loco condition. The worksplate is engraved brass oval, 13"x8" and lightly cleaned. (2) - Sold for £800

Lot 249 A North Eastern Railway double line Block Instrument indicating "Train on Line, Line Clear, line Blocked" above an engraved brass plate above "UP LINE" and below a small brass plate "TO FORTH GOODS JCT" (a box between Scotswood and Newcastle Central). The commutator has been removed and a circular cast metal description plate with brass knob and pointer added, this includes "Passenger Train/Non Passenger Train-Outside/Inside Blocking Back Running In Section, Standing At Signal, Stopping In Section, No Tail Lamp, Running Away, Danger Caution". - Sold for £240

Lot 252 A pair of Furness Railway Platform Seat Ends, in the company's decorative style which incorporates a squirrel eating a bunch of grapes. The ends are in original unrestored condition and were used at Carnforth Station, they just require the wooden slats replacing. Lot 254 A Great Eastern Railway Platform Lamp, with a painted name panel and steel plate "EAST WINCH". The station was situated a little south east of Kings Lynn on the company's route to Swaffham and Dereham and closed on 9th September 1968. The lamp has been repainted and retains its vessel, burner and glass chimney. - Sold for £150

Lot 255 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 12" dial Wall Clock with fusee movement, pendulum and key (stamped LYR). The clock is in original condition, the face marked "LYR, 2890" on the side with an embossed brass plate "LMS, 10493" below the door. The clock was used at Wardleworth Station on the Rochdale to Bacup route. - Sold for £820

Lot 256 A replacement Smokebox Numberplate "6960", from the GWR "Modified Hall" Class 4-6-0 "Raveningham Hall" built at Swindon in March 1944 but not named until after the War in June 1947. Its sheds were Old Oak Common, Reading and Oxford from where it was withdrawn in June 1964. It was taken to Barry Scrapyard where it remained for more than eight years until rescued for preservation, initially on the Severn Valley Railway but now on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. The plate is rectangular thick steel with countersunk holes and has original paintwork. A photograph of the locomotive at Banbury, carrying the plate, accompanies this lot. - Sold for £60

Lot 257 A Webb and Thompson large single line Train Staff "BIRSTAL STATION-BIRSTAL JUNC", from the London and North Western Railway branch which left the company's Dewsbury to Leeds Line between Batley and the south end of Morley Tunnel. Passenger services on the branch were withdrawn on 1st January 1917, though freight traffic continued until 1962. The staff has a substantial cast brass head with the wording on four faces, a hollow end with two protruding "keys" (probably for the ground frame at Carlinghow, the intermediate station). Notably an additional steel band has been added and a copper plate "TEMPORARY STAFF". - Sold for £340

Lot 261 A North Eastern Railway large brass Train Staff "MELMERBY & MASHAM", from the North Yorkshire branch which ran west from the Harrogate to Northallerton route. Melmerby was situated a few miles north of Ripon and was also the junction for the branch to Thirsk Town. The Masham branch closed to passengers on 1st January 1931, though freight survived until 1963, possibly including traffic for the famous Theakstons Brewery for which the town is still famous. This is undoubtedly an early example used for the staff and ticket system, it has brass body (with two steel rings), with a tapered handle with a knob at the end and steel ring. It probably dates from the opening of the line in 1875. - Sold for £860

Lot 263 A North Eastern Railway Platform Lamp Case with the station name "GROSMONT" displayed in raised blue lettering on a frosted glass panel. The lamp has a painted steel body, glazing to four sides and a polished copper top of "inverted saucer" shape, overall 28" high, with its original brass vessel and burner. The station was on the Whitby to Malton route, the junction for the Esk Valley Line to Battersby and Teesside. - Sold for £270

Lot 264 A small London and South Western Railway Notice "L.S.W.R, TO AVOID WASTE LIGHTS MUST BE PUT OUT WHEN NOT REQUIRED". The notice is 5"x3_" and made of rigid cream celluloid, the lettering red on black. It was removed from Nine Elms Sheds and was in the offices that were originally part of the London and Southampton Railway's passenger terminus on the site. - Sold for £50

Lot 265 A London and North Eastern Railway double sided enamel Lamp Tablet "FILEY HOLIDAY CAMP", from the short branch to Butlins which left the Hull and Scarborough route at Royal Oak North and South Junctions between Hunmanby and Filey. This substantial station was built by the LNER and closed officially on 26th November 1977, although the last train left on 17th September that year. The sign is double sided and has a considerable amount of restoration to the brown on cream enamel, with almost all of the word Filey repainted on both sides, nevertheless the only chance to acquire this suffix on a sign. - Sold for £500

Lot 268 A Locomotive Nameplate "TRANQUIL" from the LNER A1 Class 4-6-2 No 2570 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23108, in September 1924. It was rebuilt as an A3 in October 1944, renumbered 71 in October 1946 and became BR 60071. Always a North Eastern loco, it was allocated new to Gateshead and had spells at York, Neville Hill, Darlington and Heaton. It returned to Gateshead right at the end and was withdrawn from there in October 1964 and cut up at Drapers, Hull the following January. The racehorse after which the loco was named was owned by Lord Derby and won the 1923 St Leger and 1,000 Guineas. The plate is polished and mounted on a wooden splasher. - Sold for £11000

Lot 269 A London Transport enamel Target Sign "KINGS CROSS ST PANCRAS", from the Northern Line station serving the two famous London Termini. Red, blue and black on white, 26"x24", excellent condition. - Sold for £100

Lot 270 A North Eastern Railway enamel Signal Box Nameboard "AISKEW CROSSING", from the company's Wensleydale line between Northallerton and Hawes Junction (Garsdale), which closed to passengers on 26th April 1954 and regular freight in 1965. The crossing was situated between Lemming Bar and Bedale and was unusual in that the railway and road cross at an angle of about 20 degrees. The plate is 43_"x7" with cream lettering and border on reddish brown, with a thin black border, some repairs at the edge around screw holes, filled and carefully matched, just into brown in places, the top of the "E" slightly affected. The maker's name "Orme Evans & Co Ltd, W'hampton" is shown discretely at the centre base. - Sold for £560

Lot 271 A BR(M), maroon Totem Sign "BULWELL COMMON", (f/f), from the Great Central Railway's main line, situated just north of Nottingham Victoria. Excellent colour and shine, a chip on the white edge below the "N" just into the maroon, filled and matched. The station closed on 4th March 1963. - Sold for £1500

Lot 272 A Smokebox Numberplate "47452", from a LMS Class 3 (later 3F) "Jinty" 0-6-0T built by Bagnall, Works No 2288, in 1926, LMS No 16535, 7452 from 1934. It was allocated to Bletchley up to 1953, then Skipton and Sutton Oak from where it was withdrawn in March 1965 and was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge the following July. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £350

Lot 273 A Single Line Key Token "INGESTRE-STAFFORD COMMON", (chromed steel), from the Great Northern Railway's Uttoxeter to Stafford route. Passenger services were withdrawn on 4th December 1939 with freight withdrawal and final closure in 1951. A short branch from Stafford to the Air Ministry Sidings was retained until 1985, although this was almost certainly worked by train staff. The key is in its original pouch. - Sold for £1450

The body has been stripped, cleaned and polished to reveal "S&CB" stamped in the side, internally the blue glass is missing, the vessel stamped "LNER, D2" and a replacement burner. Lot 281 A Shedplate "15E", Leicester (GC) (February 1958 to September 1963), then Coalville (September 1963 to October 1965). The former LNER shed at Leicester has an allocation of around 20 locos (mostly B1s with a handful of V2s) when using this code. The ex MR shed at Coalville was home to 17 Stanier 8Fs in the final two years of this code's existence. The front repainted. - Sold for £120

Lot 282 A Great North of Scotland Railway Train Following Board, as used mainly by the GNSR & Highland Companies. This example is circular steel and worded "DYCE TRAIN FOLLOWING", it is 18" diameter with a substantial steel hoop at the top to hang on a lamp iron on the train, one side has had the wording repainted in red, the other is in original condition. The plate is also clearly stamped "Dyce". The station was on the Aberdeen to Keith main line and junction for the Fraserburgh and Peterhead branch. - Sold for £50

Lot 284 A pair of woollen Overcoats, the collars of each having a detailed monogram formed of the letters CLC, CCL or LCC. We do not believe that they are of Cheshire Line Committee origin, though a possibility would be London County Council Tramways. The first has the monogram in gold wire with gold and orange piping to the collar edge and matching brass buttons including button at the top of the rear vent, the second has a silver monogram, orange piping only and black buttons, both high quality black wool and excellent condition. Lot 286 A BR Standard Class "Flamecut" Cabside Number Panel, "75068", from the BR Standard Class 4 4-6-0 built at Swindon in September 1955 and allocated new to Dover. Always a Southern Region engine, its later sheds were Bournemouth, Eastleigh, Brighton, Stewarts Lane, Norwood Junction and Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in July 1967 and it was cut up the following February at Birds Commercial Motors, Risca from where this cabside was obtained. The plate is 35_"x13_", with the Power Classification numbers at the top and is in superb ex loco condition.

Lot 290 An S.N.C.F. Locomotive Nameplate "SAINT-JEAN DE MAURIENNE" from a SNCF Class BB22200 B-B ac/dc electric loco No 22287 built by Alsthom in June 1980 and allocated to Dijon Perrigny depot. Named after the main town of the Maurienne region in the French Alps close to the Italian border. A cast aluminium shield featuring the town crest of a raised hand, the name in a scroll above, overall 16"x24_", the front polished and the background painted blue, the back in totally original condition, with the manufacturer's name, address and details cast into the recess. A handsome plate reminiscent of our SR West Country Class crests. - Sold for £1000

Lot 297 A Locomotive Tenderplate "BRIC, 1147, 1955", from the 4725 gallons tender coupled with BR Class 9F 2-10-0 92058 built at Crewe and allocated new to Toton in October 1955. It later moved to Wellingborough, Toton again, Westhouses, back to Wellingborough, Warrington and finally Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in October 1967 and it was cut up four months later at McWilliams, Shettleston. Cast iron, 8"x5_", the front repainted white on red, the back silver undercoat with rust patches. - Sold for £160

Lot 298 A BR(Sc), light blue enamel Station Sign "INVERNESS", (f/f), a rare opportunity to acquire a sign from the Highland Capital as the station never had totems, 114"x24", some fading and loss of shine but still a good example. - Sold for £50

Lot 299 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "DUMPTON PARK", (f/f), the intermediate station on the Southern Railway's new 1926 line from St Lawrence Junction (Ramsgate) which joined the Ramsgate Harbour branch at a point just north of Ramsgate Tunnel. After the opening, the southern part of the LCDR Harbour branch closed, together with the South Eastern's Ramsgate to Margate Sands route, thereby creating a through circular route from Faversham to Minster, instead of two separate branches. Several edge chips into the green and face chip on the top of the "P", all neatly matched. - Sold for £120

Lot 300 A Great Western Railway Pocket Watch. The enamel face marked "Limit No 2" and in excellent condition, with second hand, the back is engraved G.W.R, 0.712, with prominent hatched lettering, excellent condition and in working order. - Sold for £280

Lot 301 A North Eastern Railway Ganger's brass single line Occupation Key "HALTWHISTLE-COANWOOD", from the company's Northumberland branch which left the Newcastle and Carlisle line at Haltwhistle, terminating at Alston (England's highest market town). The line survived in use until 3rd May 1976 as a basic railway, operated by a two car D.M.U, one of the last branch lines to close. The key is 3_" long with a brass chain. The key was attached to a motorised trolley by means of a flexible wire. When the trolley was removed from the running line the key could be inserted in a lineside instrument, which by the length of the wire indicated that the trolley was clear of the line, which was then available for the passage of a train. - Sold for £260

Lot 302 A BR(S), dark green Totem Sign "DURRINGTON-ON-SEA", (f/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's Brighton to Portsmouth route and situated west of Worthing. A diagonal chip at the left wing affecting the "R" and the "U" and the end bent, also a few of the usual edge chips. Despite the damage it has a good colour and shine and is an uncommon example, as it is normally SR targets from the station that are seen. - Sold for £160

Lot 303 An LMS/BR(M) maroon Fingerboard from Bangor Station "ALL STATIONS TO VALLEY", with feathered arrow. This board would have been used for a Holyhead stopping train departing shortly after expresses, Holyhead passengers being directed to this service, hence the final destination not included on the "local" board. 60"x5_", with edge beading and brass fitting at end. - Sold for £100

Lot 304 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet, "BARNSTAPLE TOWN - POTTINGTON", (brass/steel), from the London and South Western Railway's Barnstaple Junction to Ilfracombe route. This section runs on the banks of the River Taw, to the south the line crosses the river on the famous girder bridge, while to the north the line becomes double track for the remainder of the route. The tablet is in its original leather pouch, with brass fittings, marked "Tyers, Dalston, London", though the padding is absent from part of the hoop. - Sold for £300

Lot 305 A BR(E) dark blue enamel Sign "PLATFORM 5 STRAIGHT ON - PLATFORM 1&2 VIA SUBWAY", (f/f). The sign was used at Colchester and a label (a LNER example) is still attached to the back with delivery details from Stratford to Station Master Colchester on 14th July 1954. 42"x15", one chip below the "R" and a couple of minor edge chips, excellent colour and shine and probably a unique wording. - Sold for £350

Lot 306 A BR(M) maroon enamel Sign "WALES", with a green and white leek at the left end. This was half of a sign that read "ENGLAND WALES" and was situated at the border at Saltney, west of Chester. 73"x14" flanged, though some loss of flange at the base, good colour and shine. - Sold for £170

Lot 308 A Webb and Thompson large single line Train Staff "HELSTON-NANCEGOLLAN CROSSING PLACE", from the Great Western Railway's Gwinear Road to Helston branch, which closed on 5th November 1962, with freight and parcel traffic continuing for several years. The staff was used on the most southerly section of line in the British Isles across "The Lizard" Peninsula. Tubular steel construction with brass rings and cast brass nameplates. - Sold for £720

Lot 309 A Great Western Railway carriage panel with full company title and providing information on the communication cord, instruction not to throw anything out of the window and a list of stations at which cold luncheon and tea baskets can be obtained, mainly larger stations but including some surprising ones, Cheddar, Landore, Ledbury etc. The panel has a hinged section above marked "6358" (the coach number) and a knob, the head marked "Ventilation, Push to Shut", overall 20"x8_". Also a wooden panel with original transfer "Damage To Carriages, £5 Reward will be paid to anyone furnishing information leading to the conviction of any person doing wilful damage to the fittings of the carriages, information to be given to the station master or other officials of the company", 20"x3", cream, black, gold. This panel fitted over the slot for the roller blinds in a compartment. (2) - Sold for £180

Lot 315 A Locomotive Nameplate "PRESTON GUILD", from a BR Class 86 25kv Bo-Bo electric loco E3151 built by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry, Works Nos 3732 and E392, in April 1966 for the West Coast Main Line. It was renumbered 86212 in September 1973 and named on 8th April 1979 at Preston Station by Arthur Taylor, the Mayor of Preston to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the granting of a charter to Preston giving it the right to establish a merchant guild. The nameplates were removed in May 1992 and replaced by new plates which included the dates "1328-1992", the first date being the year the Guild was established pursuant to the earlier charter. Nowadays the Guild is a series of events and attractions held every 20 years to celebrate Preston's regional and national importance as a centre for trade. Following several periods out of service for repairs or overhaul, the loco was finally condemned in 2003 and moved to Immingham for scrapping. It was, however, resurrected and went to East Ham where it remains pending a possible sale. The plate is in ex loco condition with its original red paintwork and plenty of oxidization on the back; it is accompanied by its full "BR Collectors Corner" receipt dated 1992. - Sold for £1500

The swing bridge was at Sutton Bridge on the Spalding to Kings Lynn section. The bridge and the route eastwards closed on 2nd March 1959, though freight continued to serve the town from the west until 1965. - Sold for £150

Lot 322 A Locomotive Nameplate "VIVIEN" with "KING ARTHUR CLASS" appendage from the London & South Western Railway N15 Class 4-6-0 No 749 designed by Robert Urie, built at Eastleigh in September 1922 and allocated to Exmouth Junction. It was named by the SR in 1925 after the mistress of Merlin, the sorcerer at King Arthur's court, in Arthurian legend. It retained its LSWR number in SR days, becoming BR 30749. It spent its early BR days at Eastleigh but in 1953 moved to Basingstoke where it was employed on working the semi-fasts to Waterloo. It was withdrawn from Basingstoke in June 1956 and cut up the following month at Eastleigh Works. The front repainted and polished, the back in ex loco condition with the original number "749" clearly stamped. Cast brass, 31" long, the front polished and the background painted red, the back untouched. - Sold for £9800

Lot 323 A North Eastern Railway platform Wall Lamp with solid copper body, the station name "BURTON AGNES" displayed in raised blue lettering on a frosted glass panel. Overall 20" high, glazing to three sides, the graduated front 14"x17", a small portion of glass absent at the corner of one side. The station was situated between Driffield and Bridlington on the Hull to Scarborough route and closed on 5th January 1970. - Sold for £160

Lot 324 A London and North Eastern Railway three aspect Handlamp, with a steel plate "LNER, BIRKENSHAW, 6", on the side and an embossed brass maker's plate "ROBB, MOORE & NEILL LTD, SHIP CHANDLERS, GLASGOW, CARDIFF & LONDON". Fine restored condition. The station was on the Great Northern Railway's Bradford to Leeds route and closed in 1953. - Sold for £50

Lot 325 A Rhymney Railway/GWR 12" Dropcase Wall Clock, with chisel base. The clock has a fusee movement and is complete with its pendulum (new spring end required) and key; it is completely unrestored with brown paintwork, the glass cracked at the edge. The side bears a numberplate "BR-WR 5414". Some work required including the top surround, adapted to fit against roof. It originates from the Bargoed area. - Sold for £1400

Lot 326 An LMS Guard's Pocket Watch, with second hand, produced by "Record", the back of the case clearly engraved "LMS 10385", working order although the winder requires tightening. - Sold for £250

Lot 327 A London and North Eastern Railway enamel Seatback Plate "NEW HOLLAND", from the Town station on the Great Central Railway's Grimsby to New Holland Pier route. Both Town and Pier stations closed in 1981 when the Humber Bridge was opened, a new station being provided slightly to the south on the Barton on Humber line. White on black, 20"x3", chips at right and centre screw holes repainted, just affecting the base of the "O". A photograph of the plate in situ accompanies this lot. - Sold for £80

The edge rust has been repainted, though this could easily be improved. - Sold for £820

Lot 333 A Tyers No 6 Single Line Tablet "HOLBEACH EAST - WELLAND BANK", (alloy), from the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway's Bourne to Sutton Bridge route. Welland Bank was situated in Spalding; the junction controlled the spur to the Peterborough - Boston line. Passenger services were withdrawn on 2nd March 1959, though freight continued to pass through Holbeach until 1965, between Spalding and Sutton Bridge Docks. - Sold for £70

Lot 334 A BR(W), chocolate and cream Totem Sign "BIRMINGHAM SNOW HILL", (f/f), from the Great Western Railway's principal station in the city, which closed on 6th March 1972, though subsequently reopened. Excellent colour and shine, two tiny chips and a few pinprick size blemishes and the usual edge rust on the flange. - Sold for £900

A striking image of the Castle with descriptive text below, issued in the 1970s, rolled and in excellent condition and one of the few quality examples that continued to appear after the end of the traditional era. - Sold for £45

Lot 336 A Great Western Railway brass Cabside Numberplate, "8434", from a 9400 Class 0-6-0PT built by Bagnall, Works No 2944, in February 1953. It was allocated new to Old Oak Common and employed mainly in moving empty stock in and out of Paddington station until withdrawn in June 1959 after a working life of little more than six years. Following a year and a half in store at Swindon Works, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in December 1960. Unrestored, though most of the paint cleaned from the front background. - Sold for £440

Lot 341 A BR(Sc), light blue Totem Sign "KIRKCALDY", (f/f), from the North British Railway's Edinburgh to Aberdeen Main Line, between Inverkeithing and Thornton Junction. Excellent colour and shine with only a little rusting on the black flange. This is the first example to be offered at auction and was recovered from a skip in the early 1960s when fluorescent strip light signs were being installed. A rare opportunity. - Sold for £1000

Lot 342 A North Eastern Railway brass signal box Shelf Plate "FAWCETT ST", referring to one of the Sunderland boxes where the routes from Durham and Washington split for the main (Central) station and the South Dock branch. A station was provided at Fawcett Street until 1879, but closed when the Ryhope Grange to Monkwearmouth line was built, its trains being diverted into the new (Central) station. The plate is 7_"x11/8" with engraved lettering, the front is polished. - Sold for £160

Lot 344 A Midland Railway large brass signal lever Description Plate "STARTING TO GLAPWELL", from Bolsover signal box on the company's Staveley to Pleasley route, the southern end of which closed in 1930 leaving a branch from Staveley to Bolsover and Glapwell Colliery, until the section south of Bolsover closed in 1978. The plate is 143/8"x2_" with engraved lettering with some red wax infill remaining, the right end is rounded, the left square, with the whole plate slightly tapered toward the rounded end. - Sold for £280

Lot 345 A Smokebox Numberplate "31834", from a (South Eastern & Chatham Railway) Class N 2-6-0 built to Maunsell's design by the Ministry of Munitions at Woolwich Arsenal as a way of providing employment there after wartime hostilities ceased and sold by the War Surplus Disposals Board to the SR who completed it at Ashford ready for service in July 1924. It was SR No A834, later 1834, and allocated first to Salisbury and then Exmouth Junction where it remained until withdrawn in September 1964. During it's time at Exmouth Junction it worked on banking duties on the Barnstaple to Ilfracombe line. It was cut up three months later at Birds, Morriston, Swansea. The front repainted long ago. - Sold for £800

Lot 346 A London and North Eastern Railway Oil Can with a large brass plate on the side "LNER, CROMER BEACH, RETURN WHEN EMPTY, OIL STORE, YARMOUTH SOUTH TOWN" and a further plate on the cone "AXLE OIL ONLY". The can is 12" high with a conical top, 7" diameter and complete with handle and bung with chain. A fine example from the M&GN Joint Line, cleaned and polished. - Sold for £210

Lot 347 A "White Star" copper Wine or Champagne Cooler with a square graduated body with four inset bottle holders, brass handles and circular base and a central filler with brass cover. Overall 13" across and 9" high and stamped "White Star" and "SS Boston" on the top. An unusual piece in excellent condition. - Sold for £340

Lot 348 A Railway Signal Company miniature Train Staff "WITHAM-CRESSING", from the Great Eastern Railway's branch to Braintree and originally Bishops Stortford. Tubular steel with rings, the section names engraved on a brass cap. The staff is in its original black and white leather carrier with padded steel hoop and buckle stamped Tyers & Co Guildford, England, it is in excellent condition. (2) - Sold for £250

Lot 349 A Locomotive Shedplate "72A", Exmouth Junction (1950 to September 1963). This ex LSWR shed to the east of Exeter had over 120 locos allocated throughout this period. At its peak it had 33 Bulleid Light Pacifics and seven Merchant Navies as well as five of those exotic Z Class 0-8-0 tanks. It received the Western Region code 83D in September 1963. The front repainted over the original paintwork, the back untouched, the BR(S) Eastleigh triangle cast in. - Sold for £210

Lot 357 An LMS "Hawkseye" Target Sign "MIDDLETON JUNCTION", from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Manchester to Rochdale route and junction for the Middleton and Oldham lines, which closed in 1964 and 1963 respectively, while the junction station lasted until 3rd January 1966. The sign is 71" long, with its original black on yellow paintwork. - Sold for £350

Lot 358 A Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway signal box Block Bell, with an engraved brass plate "CARLINGFORD", one of the company's four intermediate stations. The short line was owned by the London and North Western Railway and followed the coast to Greenore, where a large hotel and steamer service to Holyhead were provided. The bell has a two section "split" case, 11_"x6_", with tapper and a brass bell with external striker top centre. The engraved brass plate with scalloped corners, 5"x_", is mounted on the front, below the tapper. The instrument is in fine original condition. - Sold for £380

Lot 360 A Smokebox Numberplate "44182", from a LMS Class 4 (later 4F) 0-6-0 No 4182 built at St Rollox in 1925. Its BR sheds were Staveley, Cricklewood, Leicester, Wellingborough and finally Leicester again from where it was withdrawn in September 1964. It was cut up at Cohens, Kettering between November 1964 and March 1965. Ex loco condition with some original paintwork on the left side and rust to the left. - Sold for £280

Lot 362 An "O" Gauge (7mm fine scale) model of a Southern Railway Q1 Class 0-6-0, No 33001, by D.J.B Engineering of Bracknell and contained in its original box, which states that it has an etched nickel silver chassis, with brass fittings, etched brass body, numberplates, motor gearbox and fine scale wheels. It is a very fine and detailed model either to run or for static display. A short section of track is provided. - Sold for £560

Lot 365 A Single Line Key Token "MORRISTON EAST - UPPER BANK JUNCTION", (alloy), from the Midland Railway's Swansea Vale line. This section was on the western loop from Glais to Upper Bank which lost its through traffic in 1950. In 1965 the line north of Morriston closed, with this section surviving until 1983. - Sold for £190

Lot 366 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway three aspect Handlamp, the body side clearly stamped "WARDLEWORTH" and "P4087", complete with its original vessel stamped "LYR" on the brass burner surround, reflector and LMS burner. The brass safety catch at the top of the handle is clearly stamped "LYR". Wardleworth Station was on the Rochdale to Bacup line and closed on 16th June 1947, though freight continued until 1966 on the southern part of the route. The lamp is repainted. - Sold for £500

Lot 367 A London and North Western Railway Signal Box Nameboard "COLWYN BAY No 1", from the North Wales Coast Line, situated just east of Llandudno Junction. Expertly restored and repainted, 73_"x10". - Sold for £380

Lot 368 An unusual Signal Finial from the narrow gauge Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, dating from the construction of the line in 1927/28. 6" square and 8" high, together with a 30" wooden semaphore arm and cast iron spectacle plate from the same line, the plate lacks its glass and has a small portion broken off at the wooden end. - Sold for £230

Lot 369 A Tyers No 7 Single Line Tablet "ROCHDALE EAST JCT-WHITWORTH", (fibre), from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Rochdale to Bacup route which closed to passengers on 16th June 1947, was truncated at Facit in 1963 and closed completely in 1967, though tablet working would have ceased during the 1950s. We have never seen a tablet from this section before and it may well be a unique survivor. It is a notable example in being a fibre No 7, with a brass surround to the edge cut-out. - Sold for £290

Lot 376 A Rhodesian Railway Cabside Numberplate, "RR, 1500, DE5", from the prototype for the Rhodesian Railways Class DE5 diesel electric locos. It was built by Jung, Works No 14125, in 1971 but did not last long, being scrapped in 1976 following an accident. Cast aluminium 19 _"x13", the front repainted red, the back lightly cleaned. A photograph of the locomotive and of the accident accompany the plate. - Sold for £100

Lot 377 A London and North Eastern Railway Lampman's Yoke complete with chains and hooks. The carved body sits comfortably on the shoulders and has its original brown paintwork and script lettering "LNER GRANTHAM PASS". - Sold for £140

Lot 391 A London and North Eastern Railway cast iron Seatback Plate "CARVILLE", from the North Eastern Railway's "Riverside" branch which left the company's North Tyne Loop at Riverside Junction near Heaton and rejoined it at Percy Main. Passenger services were withdrawn on 23rd July 1973, though the route survived for freight until 1978. The plate was recovered after the platform seat to which it was attached was burnt and, although in sound condition, is bowed with the centre raised by 1_". The front is repainted, the back untouched since its ordeal, an example has not been seen before, the others very possibly destroyed. - Sold for £1000

Lot 418 An internal Cab Numberplate "D6583", from the BR Type 2 Class 33 Bo-Bo diesel loco D6583 built by Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Co, Works No DEL187, and allocated new to Hither Green in January 1962. It was renumbered 33063 in December 1973. On withdrawal in February 1997 it was sold privately for preservation but was later acquired by the South East Loco Group and moved to the East Kent Railway in March 2000. It currently resides on the Nene Valley Railway carrying the name "RJ Mitchell". Cast brass, 4_"x11/8", cleaned with traces of original red paint. A small and manageable piece from the Southern's own diesel class. - Sold for £70

The crossing box was near Tile Shed Junction just north of East Boldon, where the Newcastle and South Shields lines diverge. The plate is 11_"x1_", polished with some black wax infill. The back is engraved "HAWKSWORTH QUARRY"; this box was just north of Arthington on the Leeds to Harrogate route, the right of the last letter has been trimmed off when the plate was reused at Tile Shed Crossing. - Sold for £180

Lot 432 A Locomotive Worksplate "ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD, 7151, Newcastle Works, 1944", from a 0-6-0T, O/C which went new in November 1944 to the City of Birmingham Electric Supply Department at Hams Hall Power Station as Hams Hall No 9. The Power Station was taken over by the Central Electricity Generating Board in April 1948 but the loco retained its original No 9 and remained at Hams Hall until withdrawal. It was acquired for preservation in February 1981 by the Bristol Suburban Railway Society at Bitton, which is now the Avon Valley Railway Co. Cast iron oval, 13"x 85/8", the front repainted white on red, the back in original condition other than the loco wheel arrangement and place of work noted. - Sold for £140

Lot 446 A Single Line Key Token "QUARRY GAP - SHIPLEY", (chromed steel/brass plate), from the Great Northern Railway's Bradford to Shipley route. Passenger services were withdrawn on 2nd February 1931 with the central section closing to freight in 1964, leaving short branches to Idle (closed 1968) and Quarry Gap (closed 1979). - Sold for £100

Lot 448 A brass Seal "L.M.S, BARDON HILL TRAFFIC", from the company's Leicester to Burton on Trent route and situated just south east of Coalville Town. The station closed on 12th May 1952, although the line remains open for freight. - Sold for £210

Lot 449 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside Numberplate "5232", from a 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon in July 1924 and allocated new to Llanelly. Its later sheds were Swansea East Dock, Danygraig and Duffryn Yard from where it was withdrawn in January 1963. After nearly a year in store at Duffryn Yard, it was cut up at Hayes Bridgend, the following November. The front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £500

Lot 450 A North Eastern Railway brass Ganger's Occupation Key "MIDDLETON - ROMALDSKIRK", from the Barnard Castle to Middleton-in-Teesdale branch, which closed to passengers on 30th November 1964, with freight lingering for a further four months. The key is 6_" long, the hexagonal head engraved with the section. The key was attached to a motorised trolley by means of a flexible wire. When the trolley was removed from the running line the key could be inserted in a lineside instrument which, by the length of the wire, indicated that the trolley was clear of the line, which was then available for the passage of a train. An unusual example, the shaft out of true. - Sold for £320

Lot 451 A BR(S) light green Totem Sign "POLEGATE", (f/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway and situated just north of Eastbourne on the route from Brighton. It was formerly the junction for the Cuckoo Line to Hailsham and Eridge, which closed on 9th September 1968. Excellent colour and shine, a chip at the extreme right edge just into the green and a few edge chips repainted on the white flange. - Sold for £390

Lot 454 A Single Line Key Token "MARKHAM SIDINGS - LOW ELLERS", (chromed steel). A section on the South Yorkshire Joint Line east of Doncaster which runs past the famous Doncaster Racecourse on its way to Kirk Sandell Junction. The key is of unusual configuration with a star shaped cut out to the head. - Sold for £40

Lot 455 A Railway Signalling Company miniature Train Staff "LETTERKENNY-GLENMAQUIN", from the County Donegal Railway's Letterkenny to Strabane route. The staff is a little longer than normal to accommodate a key at the end, used for access to an intermediate siding. The names are engraved on a triangular brass block fitted to the steel body, overall 13_" long. - Sold for £320

Lot 463 A Great Western Railway cast aluminium luggage label Glue Pot, with "GWR, TRURO", cast on the side. These pots were provided to boil up the glue, which was then used to attach labels to all luggage which was loaded in the guard's van. The pot is 14" high and 12" diameter, cleaned thoroughly inside and the exterior painted black. - Sold for £40

Lot 464 A Locomotive Shedplate "26F", Lees (1935 to October 1954), then Belle View (October 1954 to April 1956) and finally Patricroft (February 1958 to September 1963). The ex LNWR shed at Lees housed 23 locos in early BR days, Belle View (ex MR) had around 30 locos in the mid 1950s and Patricroft (ex LNWR) had nearly 80 during the period it used this code. Locos built at Derby that year were Midland Railway 3835 Class 0-6-0s Nos 3852-79, all of which survived into BR days as Class 4F Nos 43852-79 and 483 Class 4-4-0s Nos 404/11/13/21/23, all of which survived into BR days as Class 2P Nos 40404/11/13/21/23. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", the front repainted red and characters varnished long ago, a little wasting to bolt holes and the first figure of the year a little "chipped". - Sold for £120

Lot 480 A Smokebox Numberplate "48225", from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8225 built by North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24815, in 1942. A long time Kirkby-in-Ashfield engine, it stayed there almost to the very end before moving briefly to Crewe South from where it was withdrawn in October 1966. It was cut up at Cohens, Kettering four months later. Ex Loco condition, retaining much of its original paintwork. - Sold for £220

Lot 484 A Locomotive Tenderplate "BRIC, 1341, 1957 from the 4725 gallons tender coupled with the BR Class 9F 2-10-0 92131 built at Crewe and allocated new to Saltley in May 1957. It soon moved to Toton, then Westhouses, Speke Junction and Birkenhead from where it was withdrawn in September 1967. After periods in store at both Birkenhead and Speke Junction, it was cut up at Wards, Beighton, Sheffield in February 1968. Cast iron, 8"x5_", the front repainted white, the back silver undercoat with rust patches. - Sold for £220

It was withdrawn from Hull (Dairycoates) in December 1958, stored at Fighting Cocks for five months and cut up at Darlington Works in May 1959; and (2) "68238" from a NER Class E, LNER J71 Class 0-6-0T built at Darlington in 1887, NER/LNER No 347, renumbered 8238 in 1946, becoming BR 68238. It was withdrawn from Normanton in September 1955 and cut up at Darlington Works. Each 6_"x13/8" and in ex loco condition but with loss at the right hand end beyond the bolt hole. (2) - Sold for £95
