Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 4 October 2008
| Lot 48 |
A Southern Railway enamel Target Sign "EXETER CENTRAL", from the company's new station built in 1933 to replace the cramped facilities of the London and South Western Railway's Queen Street Station on the same site. The targets on platform 1 and 2 were all wooden, with the enamel versions being on platform 3 and the Exmouth Bay (No 4), the enamel versions therefore being rather scarcer than one might think. This example is an original 1933 sign with the suffix around the lower edge. It would, therefore, have been on the main platform west of the New North Road overbridge, the two examples on the platform extension east of the bridge bearing the name in the centre panel. Excellent colour and shine, screw hole and edge chips filled and expertly colour matched.
