Lot 1 A locomotive worksplate "REBUILT BY BRITISH RAILWAYS CREWE 1967, POWER EQUIPMENT BY ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY LIMITED" from a BR Class 74 electro-diesel E6109/74009. This loco was originally built at Doncaster Works in in March 1960 as a 750v electric No E5017 and allocated to Ashford. It was taken to Crewe Works in 1967 to be rebuilt as an electro-diesel, finally emerging in May 1968 as E6109, returning to Ashford. Withdrawal came in December 1977 at Eastleigh and it was cut up at Birds, Long Marston in August 1978. Chromed cast brass oval, 10_"x6", in ex loco condition with rail blue paintwork. - Sold for £1950 Lot 2 A BR(NE) tangerine enamel doorplate "ENQUIRY & PARCELS OFFICE", (f/f), with black edged lettering, excellent colour and shine, a small chip at the lower left corner and edge chips top left. - Sold for £340 Lot 3 A Great Western Railway brass signal box shelf plate "SEVERN BEACH", 4_"x1_" and retaining the original wax infill. The station and box were on the Hallen Marsh Junction to Pilning Junction route connecting Avonmouth Docks with the South Wales Main Line. - Sold for £380 Lot 4 A Great Western Railway brass ganger's key "POSSESSION OF THIS KEY AUTHORISES GANGER TO OCCUPY THE LINE BETWEEN 183M. 57CH. AND WASHFORD". The key has a circular head and engraved lettering, it comes from a section of the Taunton to Minehead line, west of Washford towards Blue Anchor, the mileage being from Paddington, via Bristol. - Sold for £460 Lot 5 A Highland Railway enamel armband "HR, LOOK OUT", excellent condition with just a little edge rust/chipping outside the red border. - Sold for £120 Lot 6 A "Royal Blue Coaches" pictorial enamel advertising sign, featuring an early coach in the centre, "ROYAL BLUE (WESTERN & SOUTHERN NATIONAL) SERVICES TO AND FROM LONDON, THE MIDLANDS, WALES AND THE NORTH, LUXURY COACH SERVICES OPERATED DAILY", black and white on light and dark blue, 42"x12", excellent colour and shine with just one face chip on the word "Services", affecting the letters "vic" and minor chips at two fixings also, restored. - Sold for £270 Lot 7 A BR(E) dark blue sign from Bury St Edmunds Station "IPSWICH", (f/f), with left pointing feathered arrow, 24"x18", excellent colour and shine, a couple of very minor face chips and a few chips to the edge of the flange. - Sold for £480 Lot 8 An SR enamel poster board header "SOUTHERN RAILWAY", in the blue and white South Eastern and Chatham Railway style, 52_"x5_", chip repairs to three corners and a couple of screw holes, otherwise excellent condition. An uncommon transitional example. - Sold for £300 Lot 9 A Smokebox Numberplate "65794", from a North Eastern Railway P3 Class, LNER J27 Class, 0-6-0, NER/LNER No 1189, built at Darlington in October 1906 and renumbered 5794 in 1946. In BR days it was first allocated to Percy Main but spent most of its time at North Blyth from where it was withdrawn in June 1965. After five months in store at North Blyth, it was cut up at Ellis Metals, Swalwell, Derwenthaugh the following November. Unrestored with original paintwork. - Sold for £480 Lot 10 A BR(Sc), light blue totem sign "LOGIERIEVE", (h/f), from the Great North of Scotland Railway's Dyce to Fraserburgh route which closed to passengers on 4th October 1965, although freight continued until 1979! Excellent colour and good shine, a couple of chips just into the blue at the right end and the usual edge chips, the lower bracket a little distorted. This is the first example to be offered for sale at auction or privately. - Sold for £4000 Lot 11 A London Brighton and South Coast Railway leather wallet, the front marked with the full company coat of arms in gold, together with a similar edge band. Overall 3_"x4_", folding, with five compartments inside, excellent condition, though some signs of light use, the coat of arms exceptionally good. - Sold for £300 Lot 12 A GCR silver plated sugar basin, decorated with the large and prominent coat of arms and "GREAT CENTRAL RY, DINING CAR", excellent condition. - Sold for £100 Lot 13 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet "BATH-MIDFORD" (fibre), from the northern end of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, the section from Bath Junction to the tiny station on the edge of the Mendips includes the steep southbound climb through the Coombe Down and Devonshire Tunnels. The route closed on 7th March 1966. The tablet is in excellent well used condition, the lettering prominently engraved in common with all S&DJR/LSWR fibre examples. - Sold for £540 Lot 14 A Great Western Railway brass cabside numberplate "2918" from the "Saint" Class 4-6-0 "SAINT CATHERINE" built at Swindon, Works No.2266 in August 1907 entering service at Cardiff Canton. In the 1930s it was allocated to Worcester and then Leamington Spa until withdrawal in February 1935. A rare opportunity to acquire a numberplate from a "true" Saint withdrawn more than seventy years ago and in superb ex loco condition. - Sold for £4200 Lot 15 An LNER silver plated egg cup, by Walker and Hall, which incorporates a 2_" diameter tray at the base. Excellent condition with the company's script initials prominently engraved on the side and saw tooth decoration to the top rim and tray edge. - Sold for £140 Lot 16 A South Eastern Railway 12" dial dropcase clock with fusee movement. The original face marked "S.R.John Walker, 1. SOUTH MOLTON ST, LONDON 1164SE". The wooden circular surround and the case back are also stamped "1164SE". The clock is complete with pendulum, key, cast brass bezel and is in fine condition & working order, other than wear to veneer in places. A fine example. - Sold for £1200 Lot 17 A BR(M), maroon totem sign "WIDNES CENTRAL", (f/f), from the Great Central and Midland Joint loop line which left the C.L.C route at Hough Green Junction and rejoined it at Widnes East Junction. Good colour and shine, just slight mottling and two small face and edge chips, repainted. - Sold for £400 Lot 18 A shedplate "83D", Plymouth Laira (1949-September 1963, recoded 84A, closed to steam April 1964). This ex GWR depot had between 80 and 100 locos during the period it used this code. At one time it had 18 Castles, 3 Counties, one Star, 11 Halls, 2 Granges, 4 Manors, and, last but not least, 10 Kings. It was later home to Class 41/43 Warships and Class 52 Westerns, many being noted carrying these cast iron steam codes. Ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £190 Lot 19 A Metropolitan Railway cast iron notice "MET.RLY. CAUTION TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED, BY ORDER", the front repainted, the back in original condition, 22_"x16_", with rounded corners. - Sold for £260 Lot 20 A pair of Barry Railway Company ornate brass and ebony window handles, clearly marked "B R Co" on the brass work. - Sold for £60 Lot 21 A North Eastern Railway signal box shelf plate "CASTLE EDEN STN", engraved brass with wax infill, 10"x1_". The station and box were on the company's Hartlepool to Ryhope Grange and Spennymoor route which closed to freight in 1979. - Sold for £270 Lot 22 A Midland Railway card advertising notice "MIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANY'S STATIONS IN LIVERPOOL & BIRKENHEAD", with Wyvern in centre, featuring a plan of the towns including the River and Dock Lines and listing the individual docks served. It is dated March 1886 and issued by John Noble, the General Manager, black, red, blue and cream print, 22"x25" and in remarkably good condition for its age, with just minor wear. - Sold for £90 Lot 23 A Great Northern Railway pegging block instrument with a large hand engraved brass plate "TO ST JAMES DEEPING". The case has been expertly restored and the original external brass contacts polished. The box was on the company's Peterborough to Spalding route. - Sold for £580 Lot 24 A locomotive worksplate "AVONSIDE ENGINE Co LTD, BUILT 1926, ENGINE No 1990, BRISTOL" from a GWR 1101 Class 0-4-0T No 1104, one of a class of only six engines built specifically for working in the Swansea Docks area to replace earlier dock shunters owned by companies absorbed by the GWR in 1922. No 1104 was always allocated to either Danygraig or Swansea East Dock, the two sheds serving Swansea Docks. It was withdrawn from Danygraig in January 1960 and, after three months in store there, cut up at Wards, Briton Ferry the following April. Cast brass oval, 11"x6_", in ex loco condition. - Sold for £1150 Lot 25 A solid silver presentation cup and stand, "London and North Eastern Area Centre of the St Johns Ambulance Association, Hull District, The Hull District Officers Cup", engraved on the side with the St Johns Emblem. The two section wooden base is adorned with twenty-six silver shields, each 1_"x2", indicating the winners between 1937 and 1972. During the war and between 1966-1970 and on other occasions the competition did not take place. Winners include Dairycoates, St Andrews Dock, Springhead, George St, Paragon, etc. (No Botanic Gardens!), overall 13_" high and 14" wide. - Sold for £120 Lot 26 A small North Eastern Railway three aspect handlamp with its original slide in vessel which is stamped "NER, D (DEW)". The lamp has a copper bezel, piecrust top and copper plate "B.BEADLE", excellent original condition. - Sold for £70 Lot 27 An SR green enamel sign "SOUTHERN RAILWAY, ENQUIRY AND TICKET OFFICE", the company name in sunshine lettering and a right handed arrow at the base, 48" square, excellent colour and shine, edge and screw hole chips and a couple of insignificant blemishes on the face, a couple of chips on the lower edge of the arrow. - Sold for £130 Lot 28 A BR(S), light green totem sign "SANDWICH", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's Minster Thanet to Dover route. Excellent colour and shine, one face chip between the "D" and "W", the lettering unaffected, this and a few edge chips neatly filled and matched. - Sold for £290 Lot 29 A Railway Signal Company miniature train Staff "SANDY-SANDY L.N.E JUNC", used for the connection between the London and North Western Railway's Oxford to Cambridge route and the Great Northern Railway's East Coast Main Line, where the two routes ran parallel just south of Sandy. The former LNWR line and connection closed on 1stf January 1968. The staff is tubular with steel rings and a brass cap engraved with the names of the section. - Sold for £380 Lot 30 A builder's plate from a London and South Western Railway van or coach "L&SWR Co, 1068, EASTLEIGH WORKS", oval cast iron, 13_"x7_", in completely original condition. - Sold for £190 Lot 31 A single line key token "ST BLAZEY - PAR BRIDGE CROSSING", (alloy), from the original Cornwall Minerals Railway route from St Blazey to Par Harbour. The line closed in 1968. Replacement key end. - Sold for £280 Lot 32 An enamel advertising sign "ROYAL BLUE EXPRESS COACH SERVICES, BOOK HERE, PROPRIETORS THE WESTERN NATIONAL OMNIBUS COMPANY LTD, THE SOUTHERN NATIONAL OMNIBUS COMPANY LIMITED, QUEEN STREET EXETER", dark and light blue, red, cream and white, 20"x30", featuring a map of the system in the West Country and connections to the North, Wrexham, Derby, Grantham, etc. Excellent condition with no face chips and just very minor marks in places. - Sold for £230 Lot 33 A pair of North Eastern Railway brass shelf plates, "MAIN LINE SOUTH" and "MAIN LINE NORTH", each 12"x1_" with prominent engraved lettering. The plates were used at Dringhouses box just south of York station. - Sold for £100 Lot 34 A BR(M) maroon totem sign "LLANDUDO JUNCTION", (f/f), from the Chester and Holyhead main line, where it branches to the coast and Blaenau Ffestiniog. Excellent colour and good shine, a few minor edge chips into the white border and a few surface marks. - Sold for £500 Lot 35 A Sykes, London Brighton and South Coast Railway brass cased semaphore signal repeater, showing the red front of a home signal on a brass post with finial, above the case a brass numberplate "4", the original face is marked "LB&SCR, 1520, ON/FALSE/OFF", though the green paintwork is crazed and flaking at the edge. - Sold for £80 Lot 36 A GWR large china wash stand water jug, prominently marked with "The Great Western Railway Hotels" coat of arms in black on white, overall 14" high, the arms 2"x2_", a crack at the base of the handle (but not the top, so never detached). An imposing piece, excellent other than a little light crazing in places. - Sold for £210 Lot 37 A locomotive worksplate "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 61464, DARLINGTON WORKS 1923" from a (North Eastern Railway) Class S3, LNER Class B16, 4-6-0 built at Darlington in 1923, LNER No. 1381, renumbered 1464 in 1946, becoming BR 61464. A long time York engine, it finished its days at Mirfield from where it was withdrawn in September 1963. After three months in store at Mirfield, it was cut up at Darlington Works the following December. Cast brass oval, 9"x5", the front cleaned, the back untouched. - Sold for £220 Lot 38 A BR(E) station direction sign "BRITISH RAILWAYS (totem) CHALKWELL STATION", with right handed feathered arrow, from the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway's Fenchurch St to Shoeburyness route and situated just west of Southend on Sea Central, A rare example as no totems are known to have survived from this station. Excellent colour and shine with just a few minor edge chips. - Sold for £620 Lot 39 An industrial locomotive nameplate "SELLAFIELD No 3", from a 0-4-0ST O/C built by Peckett, Works No 2030, in 1942, Peckett Type W7 which went ex works in September 1942 to the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Windscale Research Station, Sellafield. It later moved to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Pembrey, South Wales and by April 1952 had been sent to Wards, Briton Ferry for scrap. Cast brass, 42"x6_", ex loco condition. - Sold for £740 Lot 40 A Midland Railway signal box nameboard "STUDLEY", from the company's Barnt Green to Ashchurch "loop". The station closed to passengers on 1st October 1962, though the Redditch to Studley and Alcester section remained open for freight until July 1964. Cast letters on wood with beading, 41_"x10_", the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £210 Lot 41 A BR(S) dark green station sign "TRAINS TO WIMBLEDON & LONDON", (f/f), with right handed feathered arrow, 36"x24", excellent colour and shine, edge chip and two tiny face chip repairs. A rare opportunity to find the name Wimbledon on an enamel as a totem has never been offered! - Sold for £180 Lot 42 A GWR brass tenderplate "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY, 1552, SWINDON WORKS, APR 1903, 3000 GALLONS", engraved brass oval, 11_"x8_", the front polished, the back untouched. - Sold for £660 Lot 43 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway cast brass signalling instrument plate "PONTEFRACT WEST", referring to a box that was on the company's Wakefield to Goole route. 5_"x_", with shaped ends, the raised lettering polished. Also a similar 2_" plate "SLOW". (2) - Sold for £70 Lot 44 A single line key token "ABERDARE H.L-ABERCWMBOI", (alloy), from the former Vale of Neath, later GWR route south east of Aberdare. Replacement key end. - Sold for £140 Lot 45 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign "WHITECRAIGS", (f/f), from the Cathcart to Neilston branch which once extended to join the Glasgow and South Western Railway near Barrmill. Excellent colour and fair shine, just very minor edge chips repainted. - Sold for £280 Lot 46 An LNER cast iron doorplate "PARCELS OFFICE", the front repainted. - Sold for £90 Lot 47 A carriage print "HARPENDEN, HERTFORDSHIRE", by Ellis Silas. A view of the town, church, parkland and shops, presented in an original compartment frame (metal with a copper finish). - Sold for £120 Lot 48 A shedplate "3B", Bushbury (1935-June 1960).This ex LNWR shed housed 9 Jubilees among its allocation of 40 locos in the late 1950s. It was recoded to 21C inin 1960 and closed to steam in April 1965. Ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £480 Lot 49 A pair of "LMS STEAMERS" sugar tongs, by Walker and Hall, a small 4" example in fine condition with the company name engraved in a laurel leaf surround. - Sold for £40 Lot 50 A Webb and Thompson large single line train staff "BLUNHAM-WILLINGTON", from the London and North Western Railway's Oxford to Cambridge route and used on the Bedford to Sandy section which closed on 1st January 1968. The staff is of tubular construction with steel rings and a cast brass head engraved with the names of the stations. - Sold for £320 Lot 51 A locomotive workplate "LMS BUILT 1901 DERBY". No locos were built at Derby in 1901, but locos of Class 2441 0-6-0T were built by Vulcan and Class 1873 0-6-0 by Kitson, Neilson Reid and Sharp Stewart in that year and Derby is known to have fitted its own plates to contractor built engines. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", the year engraved, the front repainted maroon, the back untouched. - Sold for £120 Lot 52 A BR(M) wooden fingerboard from Bangor station "ALL STATIONS TO CAERNARVON", with feathered arrow, yellow on maroon paintwork, 60"x6", with edge beading and brass fixing at the end. - Sold for £130 Lot 53 A London and North Western Railway tombstone shaped signal repeater, comprising a red arm on a brass post within a circular surround, complete with lamp "In/Out" and "Wrong" indicators. - Sold for £150 Lot 54 A Southern Railway enamel sign "PLEASE Show Season Tickets", 9_"x12", excellent colour and shine and in superb condition. - Sold for £80 Lot 55 A Great Western Railway brass cased drum clock, the original face marked "G.W.R, KAY & Co PARIS". The clock is complete and in working order, the case, rear cover and movement are each stamped "3973". - Sold for £380 Lot 56 A Great Western Railway single line key token "LLANBADARN CROSSING-BOW STREET", from the Cambrian Railway's Dovey Junction to Aberystwyth line, the final section before the route becomes double track for the last mile into the terminus, running alongside the Vale of Rheidol Railway. Bow Street station closed on 14th June 1965. The key is cast steel with engraved white metal plates on each side. - Sold for £390 Lot 57 A BR(S) dark green totem sign "CHARTHAM", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's Ashford to Ramsgate route. Very good colour and excellent shine with just very minor discolouration, no face chips, a little rust at the back edge of the black flange. - Sold for £400 Lot 58 A Great Western Railway Spagnoletti block instrument, the face with white background marked "UP LINE" with white and red "LINE CLEAR/TRAIN ON LINE", flag swinging freely in aperture, below the instrument is complete with the usual brass flaps, slide and red and white buttons. The case is clearly stamped "GWR 1398". Good original condition other than a corner split off the base of the hood long ago. - Sold for £80 Lot 59 A Great Western Railway branding iron "GWR, PT WAY DEPT", 29" with ring at end of handle, the body also stamped "GWR". The image of the head has been reversed to show the wording as it would appear when used. - Sold for £110 Lot 60 A small Great Western Railway luggage label rack, constructed in pine with dovetail joints. It has thirty sloping compartments for square labels and a hinged door and is complete with a selection of labels. Overall size 20_"x24" and 5_" deep, the door catch is stamped GWR and the back branded with the company's initials. The rack was used at Naisea & Backwell station between Bristol and Yatton, which was destaffed on 23rd September 1968, the rack being acquired shortly after. - Sold for £180 Lot 61 A Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway cast iron notice "LD&ECR, TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED, BY ORDER", with the maker's name "W Richards and Son Leicester", shown in _" lettering below the word "order". 30"x14_", in original condition with integral post housing on the rear. The company never reached Lancashire or the East Coast, but ran from Chesterfield to Lincoln. It was absorbed by the Great Central in 1907. - Sold for £350 Lot 62 A locomotive worksplate "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COY LTD, 1940, No 24614, HYDE PARK WORKS GLASGOW" from a War Department 2-8-0, WD No 314, which went to the LMS as Class 8F No 8240. It was shipped to the Iran State Railways in 1941, becoming their No 41.120 but returned to the UK in May 1968. It went to the Midland Region in December 1949 as 48249 and was withdrawn in December 1966 from Edge Hill, where it was stored until May 1967 and cut up at Cashmores, Newport. Circular cast brass, 7_" diameter, ex loco condition. - Sold for £230 Lot 63 A Great Western Railway enamel lamp tablet in its original cast frame, "HORRABRIDGE", from the company's Plymouth to Launceston route which closed on 31st December 1962. Black on white, 17_"x3_", the framed painted cream. - Sold for £450 Lot 64 A BR(E), dark blue totem sign "WYMONDHAM", (h/f), from the Great Eastern Railway's Ely to Norwich route, the junction for Dereham and Forncett. An uncommon totem auctioned only twice before. This example has a neat crease repair at the right side and a face chip similarly treated above the first "M". - Sold for £760 Lot 65 A road sign "HUMP BRIDGE", cast aluminium with a separate bridge emblem fixed to the face, 12"x21", the front repainted long ago, the back in original condition, one of the nine glass reflectors is absent. - Sold for £100 Lot 66 A pair of Great Central Railway signal box block bells, the first with an ivorine plate on the front "WEEKDAY CROSS", referring to the junction just south of Nottingham Victoria where the line to London Road High Level and the Great Northern diverged from the G.C.R main line, the section closed in 1968. Fine original condition, with tapper, divided case and small circular bell, the second with an ivorine plate on the front "UP SLOW TO SOUTH" and originally from the Nottingham Victoria area. A piece of wood split from the left side base when removed, otherwise original condition, with tapper, divided case and a pyramid shaped bell. (2) - Sold for £380 Lot 67 A BR(Sc) quad royal poster "THE SOLWAY COAST, KIPPFORD", by Charles Oppenheimer (B211877). A spectacular view of the Galoway village situated just south east of Castle Douglas with boats drawn up on the narrow beach, sea front cottages and yachts. The poster is folded with a couple of small repairs and a little bruising at the edge in places, overall a good example. (The image shows the folds rather more prominently than they actually appear!) - Sold for £240 Lot 68 A locomotive worksplate "LMS BUILT 1927 ST ROLLOX" from a LMS Class 4 (later 4F) 0-6-0. Those built in 1927 were 4312-22 which became BR 44312-22, the majority of which were allocated to Scottish sheds. Cast brass oval, ex loco condition other than the back marked "44316" at the time of removal. - Sold for £360 Lot 69 A BR(M) double royal poster "THE MIDLAND PULLMAN, THE TRAIN OF TODAY", a striking colour image of the train (photographic) with times below for Manchester and Nottinghamshire services. One edge nick, the left side slightly discoloured. Lot 70 An LNER enamel poster board header "LONDON AND NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY". At twenty feet this is the longest example we have seen, five sections, each end having a plain blue section, the centre three with wording, a few screw hole chips and a thin crease on one of the plain plates. This example was used at Perth station. - Sold for £70 Lot 71 A BR(M) maroon totem sign "BLACKPOOL NORTH", (h/f), from the terminus of the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways' northerly route into the famous holiday resort. Excellent colour and reasonable shine, no face chips though some surface scratches, the usual rusting on the white flange touched in. - Sold for £760 Lot 72 A enamel sign "CITY OF LEICESTER, BUSES STOP BY REQUEST", with a wyvern above the company name. Shield shape, 11_"x13_", black on yellow, with green and brown scroll. The centre of the sign has been restored from the base of the scroll to just above the word "Request", almost unnoticeable. - Sold for £80 Lot 73 A Southern Railway enamel target sign "SNOWDOWN HALT", from the London Chatham and Dover Railway's Canterbury to Dover route. Excellent colour and shine, a bit of discolouration to the white and edge chip repairs particularly in centre screw hole area, the right end of the "T" being the only letter affected. - Sold for £250 Lot 74 A smokebox numberplate "44926", from a LMS Class 5P5F (later Class 5) 4-6-0 No 4926 built at Crewe in 1946. In BR days it was shedded at Southport, then Blackpool for over ten years and later Patricroft, Bolton, Lancaster (Green Ayre) and finally Edge Hill from where it was withdrawn in April 1968. After six months in store at Edge Hill, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh the following October. Ex loco condition with original paintwork. The plate is accompanied by a framed photograph of the engine and the BR sales receipt for the plate. - Sold for £720 Lot 75 A Great Western Railway carriage map of the unusual longer pattern incorporating hotel adverts at each end, Royal Hotel Paddington, Fishguard Bay, Tregenna Castle and Manor House. It dates from the 1923-25 period and is in its original frame, 31"x10_", a little dusty in places but could easily be cleaned. - Sold for £280 Lot 76 A signal box diagram "LNER, WICKFORD YARD, DIAGRAM OF SIGNALS", 1930, from the Shenfield to Southend route. It shows the lines towards Ramsden Bell House and Rayleigh and indicates the turntable, Wickford Junction box, the branch to Battlesbridge and table of detection. Overall 57_"x24", in a new frame of good quality and design, one small corner of glass missing. - Sold for £280 Lot 77 A Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company milepost "12_, M.C Co". The mileage shown on the oval head, 12"x5_", and the company name on a rectangular panel below 5"x1_". The post is 31_" high, though would have had a "foot" which has been broken away. - Sold for £220 Lot 78 An LNER cast iron seatback plate "DYSART", from the North British Railway's Edinburgh to Aberdeen Main Line. The station was situated between Kircaldy and Thornton Junction and closed on 6th October 1969. The plate is 24" long, the front repainted white on blue. - Sold for £480 Lot 79 A shedplate "64B", Haymarket (1949-September 1963 for steam). This ex NBR shed's star filled allocation in 1959 numbered 5 A1s, 10 A2s, 15 A3s, 7 A4s, 4 B1 namers, 6 D11s, 4 D49s and 2 named J36s. This left only 16 unnamed engines in a total of 73! Its allocation of Deltics would also carry this code at some time in their working life. Ex loco condition with original paintwork, the back marked "60514". - Sold for £170 Lot 80 A locomotive headboard for the Queen Of Scots Pullman, carried by the Class 55 Deltic locomotives, comprising a gold crown with three thistles in fibreglass, complete with steel bracket to the rear and locking mechanism, the back marked "Queen of Scots" and "Return to Kings X Pass Loco". The service started in May 1928 running from Kings Cross to Leeds, Harrogate and Edinburgh (Via Ripon). From the Summer of 1964 the train was to serve only Harrogate and Bradford and the name "The White Rose" was transferred to the service. Lot 81 A Midland Railway signal box nameboard "CORBY NORTH", from the Kettering to Nottingham via Manton route. Passenger services were withdrawn on 18th April 1966, though the line continues to be used for freight traffic and diversions. Cast letters on wood with beading, 70"x9", original white on red paintwork. - Sold for £150 Lot 82 A shedplate "66A", Polmadie (1949-May 1967 for steam). 182 locos were allocated here in 1959 including 5 Royal Scots, 2 Princess Royals, 7 Coronations, 3 Britannias and 5 Clans. In six years this number had dwindled to just 40 but did include 3 A2 Pacifics. The front repainted over the original paintwork, the back in original condition. - Sold for £100 Lot 83 A Midland Railway large brass signal lever description plate "ADVANCE STARTING TO GLAPWELL", from Bolsover signal box on the company's Staveley to Pleasley route, the southern end of which closed in 1930 leaving a branch from Staveley to Bolsover and Glapwell Colliery, until the section south of Bolsover closed in 1978. The plate is 143/8"x2_" with engraved lettering with some red wax infill remaining, the right end is rounded, the left square, with the whole plate slightly tapered toward the rounded end. - Sold for £300 Lot 84 A small London and North Western Railway chair, with square flat seat and flat back in three leaf clover shape, turned front legs and plain but curved back legs, L&NWR branded underneath, an early example. - Sold for £110 Lot 85 An enamel notice "SOUTHERN NATIONAL PARCEL SERVICE AGENT", white on green with the company name in serif lettering at forty-five degrees. The sign is double sided with a little chipping by the bracket and one face chip which is below the company name on one side and on the top part of the name on the other, it has an excellent colour and shine, with all the damage neatly restored. - Sold for £120 Lot 86 A carriage print "WORDSWORTH HOUSE, COCKERMOUTH, CUMBERLAND, A National Trust Property", by Ronald.A.Maddox. The print is presented in a modern black wooden frame, of a similar style to the original frames. - Sold for £220 Lot 87 A BR(W) double royal poster "I'D RATHER STAY IN PLYMOUTH", by Lander (PR191/61), Sir Francis Drake converses with the figurehead of a ship while examining a large globe. Rolled and in excellent condition. - Sold for £110 Lot 88 A Great Western Railway single line key token "DOVEY JUNCTION - GLANDYFI". The first section of the Cambrian Railway's route to Aberystwyth, a very short section at the head of the Dovey Estuary where the line follows the original route of the narrow gauge Corris Railway. Glandyfi station closed on 14th June 1965 after which the single line section was extended to Borth. The key is steel with a cast brass plate, with raised lettering on each side. - Sold for £210 Lot 89 A Great Northern Railway bridgeplate "GNR, 181", with double ring border, 17_"x13", the front repainted. Excellent colour and reasonable shine, minor edge chips and a little wasting at the top centre, but generally a good example from a small northern company. - Sold for £280 Lot 95 A Southern Railway enamel notice re the dangerous practice of propping up wagon doors for the support of coal weighing machines. Black on white, excellent condition, really one of the best examples we have seen. - Sold for £110 Lot 96 A Midland Railway Rotary block instrument, with enamel face, brass backplate to the commutator, the usual cancel buttons and plates, fine original condition, the case clearly stamped "MR Co 1913". - Sold for £150 Lot 97 A North Eastern Railway 10" dial roundhead clock with a chain driven fusee movement, stamped "W&H SCh" indicating that the clock was made by Winterhalder and Hofmier, a German Clockmaker from the Black Forest. The clock has base and side doors, the inside of the latter bearing a label "NER, When Sending This clock to Gateshead Stores For Repairs etc, remove Pendulum to Protect Spring....", orange on white print. The base is marked in ink "Carnaby Station Cabin" and rubber stamped "11 Aug 1911", though Carnaby has been changed to "Burton Agnes" at a later date. The clock is in excellent condition and full working order and comes with its key, pendulum and Collector's Corner receipt. The stations named are adjacent and immediately south of Bridlington on the route to Hull. - Sold for £800 Lot 98 A shedplate "26A", Newton Heath (1935-September 1963, then recoded 9D with closure to steam in February 1968). This ex LYR shed had a 1950s allocation of 170 locos, the vast majority carrying this early LMS pattern code produced at Horwich. Of note were two of the four named Black 5s and 8 Jubilees. Cleaned and the front repainted. - Sold for £180 Lot 99 A smokebox numberplate "43917", from a Midland Railway 3835 Class, LMS Class 4F, 0-6-0 No 3917 built at Derby in 1920. Its BR sheds were Skipton, Toton, Nottingham and Westhouses from where it was withdrawn in August 1964. After a couple of months in store at Toton, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh the following November. The front repainted. - Sold for £480 Lot 100 A BR(Sc) quad royal poster "THE TAY BRIDGE", by Cuneo. Featuring a view from the high girders of a Class 40 hauled express heading south and a steam loco heading north. Rolled with folds, a couple of edge nick repairs, a good example. - Sold for £120 Lot 101 An industrial locomotive nameplate set "JUPITER", together with its matching worksplate "ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD, 7116, NEWCASTLE WORKS, 1943", from a 0-4-0ST O/C which went ex works in February 1944 to Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd at their Barrow Works. In December 1950 it moved to Vickers-Armstrongs' Elswick Works but had returned to Barrow by by 1954. No information is available as to the loco's disposal but it is not preserved. The nameplate is 21"x6", the worksplate is a cast brass oval, 13"x8_", the front repainted. (2) - Sold for £1000 Lot 102 A London and North Western Railway permissive block instrument, for double line, complete with commutator, side plunger, bell mounted below case, tapper and number indicator, excellent condition. - Sold for £150 Lot 103 A carriage print "OCEAN LINER EXPRESS, SOUTHAMPTON DOCKS - LONDON, from a water colour by RICHARD WARD", featuring an unbuilt West Country Class Pacific 34095 "Brentor" with a rake of Pullman Cars, behind the liners Queen Mary, Athlone Castle and the Terminal Buildings. - Sold for £320 Lot 104 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign "WELLINGTON SALOP", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury section of the main line to Birkenhead. Various edge and face chips neatly restored though the lettering other than the "W" almost unaffected. - Sold for £800 Lot 105 A North Eastern Railway signal box shelf plate "COXHOE JCT". This junction was situated just north of Ferryhill on the East Coast Main Line and controlled the routes to Stockton, Hartlepool and Consett via Spennymoor. Engraved brass, 7"x1_", the front polished. - Sold for £200 Lot 106 A Coras Imopair Eireian, dual language enamel doorplate "FIR, GENTLEMEN", black on white, 21_"x8_", in Gaelic and English, excellent condition. - Sold for £160 Lot 107 A Great Eastern Railway signal box nameboard "MARCH NORTH". The box was situated just south of Whitmoor Junction and Yard, where the routes from the north split for Peterborough and Ely. 56"x10_", the front repainted long ago. - Sold for £250 Lot 108 A BR(M) maroon totem sign "PENDLETON BROAD STREET", (f/f), from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Manchester to Wigan route. Excellent colour and shine, two minute face chips and a few marks, otherwise excellent. A somewhat uncommon layout where the suffix on the second line and the town name share the same size lettering. - Sold for £400 Lot 109 A Metropolitan Railway cast iron notice "MET. RLY. BEWARE OF THE TRAINS", repainted, 14"x11" with rounded corners. Undoubtedly from the "Metroland" section of the route. - Sold for £420 Lot 110 A small GWR enamel advertising sign "TO IRELAND, BY THE NEW FISHGUARD ROUTE, GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, SHORTEST SEA PASSAGE 2_ HOURS, MAGNIFICENT TURBINE STEAMERS - 22_ KNOTS", a lovely multicoloured sign, showing map of England and Ireland with Railway and Steamer routes, a bit of edge chipping and wear in places but a fine example. - Sold for £340 Lot 111 A Great North of Scotland Railway trespass notice in brown on white enamel, the main text unusually in lower case script lettering, the company name repeated twice as well as appearing as the title. It is dated Aberdeen 1st October 1909 and signed T.S.Mackintosh, Secretary. 24"x18", two face chips & a few edge chips affecting the "SC" of Scotland, though this has been filled ready for repainting. - Sold for £200 Lot 112 A glass counter top jar as used in station refreshment rooms with the wording "SMITHS POTATO CRISPS" cut into the glass in blue and red lettering. The brown bakelite lid which has been broken and repaired is marked "Smiths 1929 Ltd" and states that the jar should not be used for another purpose. - Sold for £100 Lot 113 A BR(M) double royal poster "THE ENGLISH LAKES, Where Beauty Reigns Supreme", by D.W.Burley, 1956,(LM 13656). A bird's eye view with vignettes of famous locations and below images of the Lakeland poets. Rolled, minor edge nicks only. Lot 114 A locomotive worksplate "BRUSH SULZER No 532, 1964", from a BR Class 47 diesel electric D1770 built at Falcon Works, Loughborough and delivered new to Tinsley. It was renumbered 47175 in January 1974 and 47575 in March 1981. The loco was named "CITY OF HEREFORD" by SJ Stougten, Lord Mayor of Hereford on 26th June 1985 at the opening of an exhibition train in connection with the GW 150 event. The nameplates were removed in August 1999 and the loco is currently owned by Riviera Trains and stored at Crewe Heritage Centre. Cast aluminium oval, 9_"x55/8", cleaned and the front repainted, a small knock on the top of the "US". - Sold for £220 Lot 115 A framed sales card "MECKUMFAT" REGD. Prepared from SUSSEX GROUND OATS & proved to be the best for making poultry plump. TO BE OBTAINED FROM ALL HIGH CLASS SHOPS", a superb farmyard scene with turkeys, geese, ducks and hens in full colour. Framed and glazed, overall 25_"x22" including a 4" mount and frame. - Sold for £130 Lot 116 A single line key token "WHITSTONE & BRIDGERULE - HOLSWORTHY", (alloy), from the London and South Western Railway's Halwill Junction to Bude branch which closed on 3rd October 1966. The key end has been replaced as the Exeter S&T Dept removed these before sale in the 1960s. - Sold for £130 Lot 117 A traction engine builder's emblem "ADVANCE SIMPLICITY", the plate incorporating a globe and shooting star. Cast brass, 12"x11", the front repainted. - Sold for £540 Lot 118 A diesel locomotive nameplate "TENACIOUS, WARSHIP CLASS", from a North British built "Warship" Class 43 No D852 built at the NBL works in Glasgow, Works No 27981, one of 33 diesel hydraulics built for the Western Region. Delivered new to Laira in July 1961, it spent all its working life allocated to the WR, being withdrawn from Newton Abbot in November 1971 and cut up at Swindon Works in June 1972. Fine ex loco condition, 39_"x11_", with original black paintwork, the earlier red visible in places, a magnificent name and in superb condition. - Sold for £6000 Lot 119 A Glasgow and South Western Railway enamel armband "G&SWR, LOOK OUT", a little chipping at left hole otherwise a fairly good example. - Sold for £120 Lot 120 A London and South Western Railway cast iron signal box door notice "PRIVATE, NO ADMITTANCE EXCEPT ON BUSINESS", the second two lines in upper case italics, 12_"x6_", the front repainted black on cream, the back primered. - Sold for £110 Lot 121 A BR(E) dark blue running in board "BILLERICAY", (f/f), from the Great Eastern Railway's Shenfield to Southend Victoria route, 72"x20", some surface marks, no face chips (just the odd edge chip). The station had totems but none are known to have survived, so a good opportunity to acquire an enamel sign showing the station name. - Sold for £520 Lot 122 A road sign "SLOW, MAJOR ROAD AHEAD", featuring the crossroads symbol with its large and small glass reflectors complete, cast aluminium, 14"x27_", the front repainted, the back in original condition and complete with its two small brackets. - Sold for £110 Lot 123 A locomotive worksplate style numberplate "No 62070, 1948" carried by the last KI 2-6-0 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 26674, in 1950. A long time March loco, it could be found on such diverse duties as station pilot at Peterborough North and working holiday specials as far afield as York, Southend and Great Yarmouth. It finished its days at Stratford, returning briefly to March and finally Retford from where it was withdrawn in January 1965. After three months in store at Retford, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following May. Engraved brass oval, 12_"x6_". - Sold for £260 Lot 124 A Southern Railway (L&SWR pattern), signal post finial, the top of the base clearly marked "TYER & CO, LONDON, SR", 24_" high. - Sold for £110 Lot 125 A BR(S), dark green totem sign "BEKESBOURNE", (f/f), from the London Chatham and Dover Railway's Canterbury to Dover main line, excellent colour and good shine, no face chips, just a couple of minor chips on the white flange. - Sold for £230 Lot 126 A BR(M) maroon enamel doorplate "SEAT & SLEEPER RESERVATIONS", (f/f), excellent colour and shine, almost mint and certainly from one of the larger stations on the system, either of Midland or LNWR route origin. - Sold for £600 Lot 127 A Great Western Railway brass signal box shelf plate "DAWLISH WARREN BOX", from the Exeter to Newton Abbot section, 4_"x1_", the front polished. - Sold for £140 Lot 128 A North Eastern Railway enamel signal box nameboard "FIMBER ROAD", from the company's Malton to Driffield route which closed to passengers on 5th June 1950 and finally to freight in 1958. The box was situated near Sledmere and Fimber station, high in the Yorkshire Wolds. The board is mounted on its original chamfered wooden backboard, overall 41"x9", cream lettering and border on reddish brown background, a few light surface marks and minor edge chips only, otherwise fine original condition with excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £540 Lot 129 A carriage print "SEAHOUSES, NORTHUMBERLAND, from a water colour by Jack Merriott R.I. A picturesque view of the harbour, the small town situated on the coast south of Berwick and served by the branch from Chathill on the main line. - Sold for £150 Lot 130 A locomotive worksplate "LMS BUILT 1933 CREWE". Engines built that year were the first two "Pincess Royal" 4-6-2s (4)6200-01, "Patriot" 4-6-0s (4)5517-9/23/4/29-32/36-41 and Stanier 2-6-0 "Moguls" (4)2945-57/60/63, so a fair chance that this plate was carried by a "namer". Cast brass oval, 10_"x6", the front repainted maroon. - Sold for £180 Lot 131 A BR(W) "One Engine In Steam" train staff "MAIDEN NEWTON - BRIDPORT", used during the final years of the Great Western branch which once extended to West Bay. Services ceased on 5th May 1975. The staff is wooden with steel ends and handle, the section names stamped on a aluminium plate, overall " long. The lot includes a book, The Bridport Branch, by Jackson and Tattersall, OPC 1976, which clearly shows the staff on page 142. - Sold for £320 Lot 132 A pair of cast brass crests as carried by the GWR 3031 Class 4-2-2 Dean "Single" No 3035 built at Swindon in July 1894, originally named "Bellerophon" but renamed "Beaufort" in December 1895 and withdrawn in May 1909. These remarkable survivors from a loco withdrawn nearly a century ago display the crests of London, depicting a dragon's wing and red cross, and Bristol, depicting a serpent and pair of scales. These crests, each approximately 5"x5_", were mounted on the engine's driving wheel splasher below the nameplate, either side of the GWR coat-of arms, the London crest to the left of the coat-of-arms and the Bristol crest to the right. The London crest is stamped "3035" on the back. The classic lines of the elegant Dean bogie singles resulted in them being regarded by many devotees as the most handsome of railway locomotives ever to run on British rails. Note: There is a superb official photograph of the locomotive on page 43 of Jim Russell's "Pictorial Record of Great Western Engines" clearly showing the two crests. (2) - Sold for £1650 Lot 133 A Midland Railway (Northern Counties Committee) cast iron notice, "MIDLAND RAILWAY, N.C.C, NOTICE RELATIVE TO ACCOMMODATION CROSSING GATES, ANY PERSON OMITTING TO SHUT AND FASTEN THIS ACCOMMODATION CROSSING GATE WILL BE PROSECUTED PURSUANT TO 8.VIC.CH.20.SEC.75, PENALTY 40/-", 19_"x12", the front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £110 Lot 134 An LNER cast iron seatback plate "LONMAY", from the Great North of Scotland Railway's Dyce to Fraserburgh branch which closed to passengers on 4th October 1965, though the line survived until 1979 for freight traffic. The front is repainted and has a repair to the left end. - Sold for £120 Lot 135 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign "DUNDEE TAY BRIDGE", (h/f), from the North British Railway's station situated close to the north end of the famous bridge. Arguably one of the best suffixes in the lower panel of any totem and in lovely condition with an excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £2500 Lot 136 A Caledonian Railway (Dundee and Arbroath Joint) brass signal box shelf plate "ST VIGEANS JCT DOWN DIST. TO N.B. LINE". The box was situated just beyond Arbroath at the north end of the D&A Joint line where the routes to Aberdeen and Forfar diverge. 5"x11/8". - Sold for £100 Lot 137 A Southern Railway double line block instrument, complete with commutator, brass slide and cancel button and enamel plate "Down Line", the "Up Line" indicator mounted above the case but lacking its enamel description plate, excellent condition. - Sold for £120 Lot 138 An enamel notice "EAST KENT RAILWAY, PUBLIC WARNING NOT TO TRESPASS.....". The sign refers to the E.K.R order of 1911 and The Railways Clauses Consolidation Act 1845, referral to Justices... and is signed HF Stephens, Engineer and General Manager, Tonbridge Sept 1917. 15"x10", black on white, three face chips and screw hole chips, otherwise original condition with minor surface wear as is to be expected. The Light Railway ran from Shepherds Well on the Canterbury to Dover route to Richborough Port (north of Sandwich) with a branch to Wingham, in the west, serving the Kent coal fields. - Sold for £1150 Lot 139 A single line key token "BUGLE - ROCHE", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Par to Newquay branch. In common with many Cornish examples the key end has been replaced. - Sold for £130 Lot 140 A shedplate "65B", St Rollox (1949-November 1966). This ex Caledonian shed was noted for being home to all four named Black 5s in the early 1950s when its allocation numbered around 80 locos. In its final year it had just 13 locos, one of them being A4 60031 Golden Plover. Repainted black, the back showing various wording from the wooden pattern though this is indistinct. - Sold for £110 Lot 141 A smokebox numberplate "4917", from the GWR 4900 "Hall" Class 4-6-0 "CROSSWOOD HALL" built at Swindon in March 1929. In BR days its sheds were Southall, St Philips Marsh, Landore, Chester, Hereford, Exeter and in 1954 Wesbury where it remained until withdrawal in September 1962. After nearly two years in store at Westbury, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in June 1964. Unrestored with BR welds at both ends where the plate has been broken at the bolt holes. Note: The actual Hall is 10 miles south-east of Aberystwyth and is part of Crosswood Park, once owned by the Earls of Lisburne. - Sold for £430 Lot 142 A Southern Railway enamel target sign "VAUXHALL", from the first station outside Waterloo which serves the Oval Cricket Ground, excellent colour and shine with the usual edge chipping. - Sold for £150 Lot 143 A locomotive worksplate "BUILT BY THE BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON Co LTD SMETHWICK, ENGLAND, 1958, SERIAL No DEL 65" from a BR Class 26 diesel electric D5320. Delivered new to Leith Central, it was the first of the Class to work in Scotland. It was renumbered 26028 in March 1974, withdrawn from Eastfield in October 1991 and cut up at MC Processors, Glasgow in November 1992. Cast brass rectangle, 4"x3", as fitted in the locomotive cab and in ex loco condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 144 A Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway mounted transfer, featuring the company's monogram initials in gold with brown shading on a black background, overall 11_"x14". - Sold for £80 Lot 145 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign "FOREST GATE", (h/f), from the Great Eastern Railway's main line out of Liverpool Street and situated just north of Stratford. Excellent colour and shine, a little damage and chipping to the top flange at the left end, the face of the sign unaffected. A scarce example only offered for sale once before. - Sold for £1000 Lot 146 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway cast brass signal instrument plate "HOUGHTON". The box was on the Dearne Valley Railway between Wakefield and Doncaster and was situated between Thurnscoe Junction and Grimethorpe Junction, closure as a through route took place in 1966. 5_"x5/8", with scalloped ends, the raised lettering lightly polished. - Sold for £180 Lot 147 A BR(M) wooden fingerboard from Bangor station "MENAI BRIDGE, PORT DINORWIC, CAERNARVON, AND ALL STATIONS TO AFONWEN", cream on maroon paintwork, 60"x6", with edge beading and brass fixings at the end (the name Port Dinorwic has been scratched on each side, presumably to indicate that the station was not open, it is still clearly legible). - Sold for £170 Lot 148 An industrial locomotive nameplate "CHELFORD No 1", from a 0-4-0DM built by Drewry Car Co, Works No 2168, and Vulcan Foundry, Works No 4860, in 1942. It went new to the MOD at the Royal Ordnance Factory, Chelford and in 1961 moved to ROF Ruddington. It went into the Bicester Military Railway Workshops, Oxfordshire in May 1964 and was sent in February 1965 to Pontrilas Ordnance Depot, returning to Bicester for storage in December 1968. It moved to ROF Bishopston in July 1971 and to ROF Leeds in March 1972 before being sent to the Royal Navy at Gosport in December 1980. We have been unable to trace the loco's later history. Lot 152 A road sign "SCHOOL", with torch emblem, cast aluminium, 12"x21", generally original paintwork, with the bolt holes retouched, the maker's name "Royal Label Factory", picked out in black. Lot 153 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign "MABLETHORPE", (h/f), from the Great Northern Railway's Lincolnshire Coast loop line which left the Boston to Grimsby route at Willoughby and rejoined at Louth. The north end of the loop closed in 1960 leaving Mablethorpe as the branch terminus until closure on 5th October 1970. It spent the whole of its BR days at Tyseley from where it was withdrawn in May 1964 and, after three months in store at Tyseley, was cut up at Cashmores, Newport the following August. The front repainted long ago. - Sold for £580 Lot 159 A Great Western Railway brass signal box shelf plate "HALLEN MARSH". The junction was situated between Avonmouth Dock and Severn Beach, at the divergence of the route to Filton Junction and Pilning. 4_"x1_" and retaining the original wax infill. - Sold for £320 Lot 160 A Southern Railway enamel seatback plate, "ASH VALE", from the London and South Western Railway's Aldershot to Ascot and Pirbright Junction (Brookwood) route. Excellent colour, shine and condition with just a few tiny edge chips, 48"x3", mounted on a wooden bar. - Sold for £70 Lot 161 A Webb and Thompson large single line train staff "BREIDDEN - BUTTINGTON JUNCTION", from the Great Western and London and North Western Joint Railway between Shrewsbury and Buttington, where it joined the Cambrian Railway's Oswestry to Newtown line. The staff is of tubular steel construction with brass rings. The Buttington plate is cast brass with raised lettering, the Breidden plate is engraved, as it was fitted in 1928 when the station name was changed from Middleton Hills on 1st February 1928. - Sold for £380 Lot 162 A set of London and North Western Railway signal lever description plates on their original backboard, from Heyford North box on the West Coast Main line between Blisworth and Weedon, fourteen plates each 5_"x3_". The wordings include; (a) Heyford South Down Intermediate Block Main To Loop Call On (a unique example), (b) From Loop, (c) Gong To Box, (d) Up Main & Thro Crossing, (e) Disc Siding To Down Main and other usual wordings, all repainted, overall 62_"x8". (14) - Sold for £160 Lot 163 A locomotive worksplate "AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY, 74208, SCHENECTADY WORKS, DECEMBER, 1945" from a United States Transportation Corps metre gauge 2-8-2 built for war service and known as the "MacArthur" Class after the American General. This was a general purpose design which saw use across many theatres of the Second World War and subsequently in parts of Africa and Asia. Cast brass rectangle with rounded corners, 14_"x7_, the characters and rim polished. - Sold for £450 Lot 164 A Great Eastern Railway signal box instrument plate "NEWMARKET YARD JCT BOX", from the company's Cambridge to Bury St Edmunds route. The box controlled access to the extensive goods yard provided to deal with horse box traffic from the nearby race course. The plate is 4_"x7/8, with hand cut serif lettering and is in exceptionally good condition for a plate of this type and age. - Sold for £130 Lot 165 A locomotive nameplate "THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY", from the LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 No 3676 built at Darlington, Works No 1904, in January 1943, renumbered 964 in 1946, becoming BR 60964. It was ceremonially named at Durham Station on 29th April 1958 by the Colonel of the Regiment in the presence of local dignatories. The choice of 60964 for the naming was appropriate as the loco spent the whole of its working life at nearby Gateshead and Heaton. It was withdrawn from Gateshead in May 1964 and, after short periods in store there and at Swindon Works, it was cut up at the latter the following October. A magnificent example, the nameplate and "splasher" below being a one piece brass casting with the regimental badge fitted separately, the whole with the original BR chromium plating. Note: There is a photograph of the naming ceremony and a diagram showing the construction of the nameplate on page 138 of Frank Burridge's "Nameplates of the Big Four". Overall 65"x15_", the integral splasher repainted green with orange lining and the background to the lettering red, original chrome to the lettering, border and badge, the back also completely untouched. - Sold for £20000 Lot 166 A smokebox numberplate "60964", from LNER Class V2 2-6-2 "THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY". No 3391, DARLINGTON, 1910" from a Rhymney Railway "A" Class 0-6-2T, RR No 14, designed for freight traffic. When the Rhymney amalgamated with the GWR on 1st January 1922 the loco was taken into GWR stock, renumbered "GWR 56" and allocated to Dowlais. It was fitted with a GWR standard No 10 boiler in 1936. Its later years were spent at Cardiff (Cathays) and Cardiff (East Dock) from where it was withdrawn in September 1953. Cast brass hexagon, 11"x5_", ex loco condition, the back clearly stamped "56". - Sold for £720 Lot 170 A shedplate "50A", York (1949-June 1967 for steam with total closure in March 1984). This ex NER shed had 180 locos allocated in the 1950s; 5 A1s, 6 A2s, 4 B1 Antelopes and 10 D49 Hunts. In the 1960s it was home to the few remaining A1 Pacifics and much later host to the magnificent Deltics. After closure it was transformed into the NRM. Ex loco condition with orange paintwork and dirt. A superb view of the main street with its classic Cotswold town houses and cottages. Excellent colour and shine, a face chip between the second "H" and "T" into the left side of the "H", a tiny chip in the upper panel, both carefully filled and colour matched. - Sold for £560 Lot 178 A small brass lifeboat nameplate "DUKE OF LANCASTER", 15_"x2_", in original condition with black on maroon paintwork and scalloped corners, together with the matching circular emblem, featuring the lion and wheel with rope surround, 5" diameter, unrestored with some yellow orange and blue paintwork present. The lifeboat was allocated to one of the last BR passenger-only ships built at Harland & Wolff, Belfast in 1926, later converted to a car ferry, and used mainly on the Heysham-Belfast ferry service until 1975 and later on the Fishguard-Rosslare and Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire services until 1978 after which the ship was sold to a private operator. The sign was used on the A1 north of Scotch Corner until the section was converted to motorway. - Sold for £65 Lot 182 A Glasgow and South Western Railway framed signal box diagram "G&SWR, DIAGRAM OF SIGNALLING AT BARGANY CABIN, 1920", signed Signal and Works Dept Irvine 1/12/20. It includes Signals, Cabin, two track circuits, gradient post and siding to the pit (coal mine). Some repairs, etc. and presented in an old, non-original frame, 36"x18". The box was situated on the Stranraer main line just north of Girvan, on the route to Maybole and Ayr. Scottish pre-group diagrams are uncommon, in any case, though we have not seen a G&SWR example previously. - Sold for £100 Lot 183 A North Staffordshire Railway signal box nameboard "STOKE JUNCTION", from the box situated just south of Stoke on Trent station where the routes to Leek, Derby and Stone diverged, 74"x10_". The front repainted white on black, cast letters on wood with beading. - Sold for £440 Lot 184 A shedplate "40B", Immingham (1949-February 1966 for steam). This ex GCR shed housed over 120 locos in the 1950s, being noted for its GCR D11 "Director" 4-4-0s. It was one of the last sheds on the Eastern Region to have a steam allocation. Ex loco condition with white on blue paintwork. - Sold for £110 Lot 185 A carriage print "TOWN BRIDGE, STAMFORD, LINCS", from a water colour by John Bee. A view of the river and the beautiful town houses close to its banks. - Sold for £80 Lot 186 A Great Northern Railway brass seal "G.N.R, NOTTINGHAM, (T.O)", the engraved oval head 1_"x7/8", with a turned wooden black handle, overall 3_" high. The "T.O" stood for Town Office. The provision of a booking office away from the station was not uncommon in this period in larger places such as Nottingham. - Sold for £100 Lot 187 A Midland Railway three aspect handlamp, complete other than the blue glass and bearing matching oval brass plates "MIDLAND RAILWAY, B18469", on the top and body side, the company name embossed, the number stamped. - Sold for £100 Lot 188 An original oil painting "Euston Station, by Malcolm Root", an atmospheric view looking through Hardwicks Arch to the station while in the foreground a taxi pulls across to the pavement to collect a "fare". Overall 23_"x19_", presented in a stylish 3" frame. This is a superb image giving the feeling that one could just walk through the arch and the building onto the platform and board a Coronation hauled express to Glasgow. - Sold for £840 Lot 189 A single line key token "WHITSTONE & BRIDGERULE - BUDE", from the London and South Western Railway's Halwill Junction to Bude branch which closed on 3rd October 1966. The key end has been replaced as the Exeter S&T Dept removed these before sale during the 1960s. - Sold for £170 Lot 190 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign "MAIDENHEAD", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's Paddington to Reading Main Line, the junction for Marlow and formerly High Wycombe, excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £680 Lot 191 A locomotive worksplate "BUILT BY [AND ON LOAN TO] LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co 1945, DONCASTER WORKS No 1989". Doncaster built 30 Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0s for the LMS between 1943 and 1945. This plate was carried by the last loco in the batch, LMS No 8539 which became BR 48539. Initially used on the LNER, it was transferred to the LMS in April 1947 when its loan period was terminated and when the words "and on loan to" were probably ground off. A long time Staveley engine, it later moved to Newton Heath and Agecroft from where it was withdrawn in January 1966. After five months in store at Agecroft, it was cut up at Wards, Beighton, Sheffield the following June. Cast iron oval, 13_"x7_", the front in ex loco condition, white on red, the back cleaned. - Sold for £540 Lot 192 A Great Northern Railway locomotive tenderplate "1026", cast brass oval with serif numbers, 61/8"x31/8", the front cleaned. - Sold for £110 Lot 193 A Midland Railway rotary block instrument with an enamel face, brass backplate to the commutator and the usual cancel buttons with their associated brass plate, excellent original condition, the top of the case clearly stamped MR Co 1913. - Sold for £160 Lot 194 A Southern National Omnibus Company Ltd. small poster route map of North Devon and North Cornwall, covering the area from Exeter to Padstow and the coast to Porlock, with an inset of the Newquay to Wadebridge area. The green border is decorated with twenty town and county crests of the places served (many used on West Country Class locos), also a single and double deck half cab bus and central vignette "A Tilling Company", illustrating the Crewe House headquarters. 29_"x20", undated but probably mid to late 1930s. - Sold for £60 Lot 195 A GWR double royal poster "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, SUMMER TRIPS THROUGH 90 MILES OF THAMES SCENERY - OXFORD TO KINGSTON - SALTER BROS BOAT BUILDERS OXFORD". A fine image of one of the company's steamers with Windsor Castle beyond, a lovely example dating from before the First War, framed and glazed, minor repairs in places. - Sold for £420 Lot 196 A smokebox numberplate "7907", from the (GWR) 6959 "Modified Hall" Class 4-6-0 "HART HALL" built at Swindon in January 1950 and allocated new to St Philip's Marsh although it spent most of its working life at Bristol (Bath Road) and then Bristol (Barrow Road) from where it was withdrawn in December 1965, After five months in store at Oxford, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in May 1966. Note: The actual Hall is a building attached to Hertford College, Oxford. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £860 Lot 197 A BR(NE) tangerine enamel doorplate "TICKETS", (f/f, with black edged lettering), excellent colour and shine, one minor rim chip. - Sold for £340 Lot 198 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign "STOP, NO SEATS IN TRAIN BEYOND THIS POINT", (f/f), 42"x24", with a few minor chips repainted. The sign would have been used at a location where a particular platform was used by services with a high proportion of parcels or mail vans at one end of its formation, or possibly where early motor rail services departed, such as Sutton Coldfield. - Sold for £100 Lot 199 A BR(M) maroon totem sign "MANCHESTER VICTORIA", (f/f), from the famous LNWR and Lancashire and Yorkshire station on the north side of the city. Excellent colour and shine, though a crease repainted to the right side, affecting the right half of the second "E" and a few surface marks at the ends. - Sold for £600 Lot 200 A North Eastern Railway brass signal box shelf plate "WINGATE COLLIERY". Wingate Colliery Junction, to which the plate refers, was situated between Hartlepool and Crook. The colliery branch and adjacent section of the route closed in 1963. Engraved brass with prominent wax filled lettering, 10_"x11/8", the front polished. - Sold for £250 Lot 201 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign "NAIRN", (f/f), from the Highland Railway's Inverness to Keith Junction (and Aberdeen) route, excellent colour though some loss of shine, three face chips around "R" and a couple of edge chips into the blue, all neatly filled and colour matched. - Sold for £280 Lot 202 An early signal box Magnetto telephone, with separate mouth and ear piece. The body is 7"x5" with two small bells and an ivorine maker's plate "G HAWKES & SONS, ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS & IRONMONGERS, 7 HIGH ST READING". The instrument is mounted on a shaped backboard with external terminals, excellent original condition. - Sold for £180 Lot 203 A Great Northern Railway (Ireland) 12" dial roundhead wall clock, with a chain driven fusee movement. The painted face is marked "GNR(I), Strabane South Cabin", applied over the original lettering and background, a note on the rear of the face indicates that the clock was examined in February 1902, with a signature, below a door to the right side and base and complete with a spun brass bezel, pendulum and key and in good working order. Strabane was on the Omagh to Londonderry route, the town also being served by the County Donegal Railway. - Sold for £920 Lot 204 A locomotive worksplate "YORKSHIRE ENGINE Co LIMITED, No 2863, MEADOW-HALL WORKS 1962 SHEFFIELD" from a 0-6-0DE which spent all its working life at British Steel Corporation, Frodingham, their No 6, and was scrapped in March 1983. Cast brass oval, 11"x5", cleaned and polished. Together with a cast brass numberplate "7" from a sister engine built by Yorkshire Engine Co, Works No 2634, in 1957 and scrapped in about August 1986. - Sold for £160 Lot 205 A Great Western Railway oval steward's badge "GWR 282", black on white, 1_"x1", the number on a brass rectangle. - Sold for £210 Lot 206 An original George Heiron painting "THE BLUE PULLMAN", featuring a view of the Bristol service leaving Bath Spa with a bus and cars below and the city skyline beyond. The painting is 13"x10" with frame and mount, overall 17_"x14", and is painted in Heiron's characteristic style with great attention to detail. - Sold for £540 Lot 207 A BR(S) dark green totem sign "WOOLWICH DOCKYARD", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's North Kent route from London to Dartford, via Plumstead. There is a cease repair at the right side and a few face chips filled and painted in the green, otherwise the enamel has excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £200 Lot 208 A Great Western Railway pocket watch, the back clearly engraved "G.W.R. 0.631", in prominent hatched lettering. The face is in generally good condition, with one chip repair on the white only and is marked "Limit No 2, GWR 0.631", below a second hand, with the inscription, "Non Magnetic". A good example, in working order. - Sold for £220 Lot 209 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign "GLYN NEATH", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's Vale of Neath line from Neath to Merthyr and Aberdare. The station closed on 15th June 1964. Excellent colour and shine, a bit of surface scratching only apparent on close inspection and the edge repainted. - Sold for £1400 Lot 210 A London and North Western Railway double line block instrument with a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway type cast brass plate "EAST JCT", referring to Bolton East Junction. - Sold for £120 Lot 211 A shedplate "24B", Rose Grove (1935-September 1963, when it was recoded 10F). This ex LYR shed was famous for being one of the last three steam sheds in the country, closing in August 1968. Under its original code it was home to 45 locos in the late 1950s. An LMS pattern plate, the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £440 Lot 212 A small N.B.R. coloured system map with wooden rollers, showing the company's lines and steamer services and titled "RAIL COACH & STEAMBOAT TOURS IN SCOTLAND IN CONNECTION WITH THE NORTH BRITISH RAILWAY", 13_"x21, glazed linen backed paper, vignettes of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth Hotels (unused condition). - Sold for £140 Lot 213 A locomotive worksplate "W.G. BAGNALL LTD, ENGINEERS, No 2665, STAFFORD ENGLAND" from a 0-4-0ST O/C which went ex works by December 1942 to the Shropshire, Worcestershire & Staffordshire Electric Supply Co at Stourport Power Station and was named "GENERAL WADE HAYES". In April 1948 it was taken over by the British Electricity Authority, in April 1955 by the Central Electricity Authority and in 1958 by the CEGB. It was scrapped in February 1968. Cast brass oval, 8"x53/8", the lettering and rim lightly polished, the back in original condition. - Sold for £460 Lot 214 A Southern Railway enamel target sign "BECKENHAM JUNCTION", from the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's London to Swanley route and situated between Kent House and Shortlands. Excellent colour and shine, the usual edge and screw hole chips filled and neatly matched, together with two patches around the right centre fixing holes just affecting the top of the "H" and the top right corner of the "N" of junction, otherwise a good presentable example. - Sold for £420 Lot 215 An LNER cast iron doorplate "TELEPHONE", smaller size than usual, 11_"x3_", black on silver grey, the letters possibly repainted, background original, the back untouched. - Sold for £120 Lot 216 A locomotive nameplate "LOCH OICH" from the Great Northern Railway H3 Class, LNER K2 Class, 2-6-0, No 4704, the last of the Class built by Kitson & Co, Works No 5354, in September 1921. It was named in June 1933 after the Loch near Invergarry in Inverness-shire and renumbered 1794 in 1946, becoming BR 61794. A long time Eastfield engine and regular performer on the West Highland line, it was withdrawn in July 1960 and cut up at Cowlairs Works the following month. Curved cast brass, 56" long, unrestored other than a little repainting of the black background in places, over the original paintwork, the brass unpolished. - Sold for £7200 Lot 217 A Great Western Railway locomotive cab notice "CAUTION DO NOT LOOK OVER OR PASS ALONG THE SIDE OF THIS CAB WHEN NEAR BRIDGES, TUNNELS, LOADGAUGES OR COAL STAGES, JAN 1909", cast iron, 12"x7_", the front repainted white on green, the back in original condition. - Sold for £140 Lot 218 A London and North Western Railway 8" dial wall clock, with fusee movement, the face marked "L&NWR, JOHN WALKER, SOUTH MOLTON ST LONDON". It is complete with pendulum, key, spun brass bezel and side and base doors and is restored and in working order. - Sold for £520 Lot 219 A BR(S) quad royal poster "THE SOUTH DOWNS", by Jack Merriott (AD6657/A3). A scenic view of ruins, substantially complete on the edge of the Lough in County Limerick. As all the D11s and B3s were named, there is a very fair chance that this plate is from a "namer". Cast brass oval, 10_"x65/8", cleaned and the face repainted. - Sold for £1100 Lot 235 A Great Western Railway brass cased locomotive footplate thermometer with white porcelain face, indicating 40o - 300o Fahrenheit, 2"x8_", with decorative pediment and substantial side fixings and a 9" horizontal sensor pipe at the rear. The front clearly stamped with the company initials. A very early example. - Sold for £130 Lot 236 A London and North Eastern Railway cast iron seatback plate "PELAW". The station was on the North Eastern Railway's Newcastle to Sunderland coastal route and was the junction for the South Shields branch and the line to Washington. 19" long with thick original paintwork, completely unrestored. Lot 237 A Midland Railway non pegging block instrument with an enamel face plate surrounding the green centre, which bears a painted scroll with the full company name, with a Wyvern below. The instrument is in fine original condition and is complete with a cancel button lower left. The top of the case is stamped M.R.Co. in three places. - Sold for £60 Lot 238 A Southern Railway carriage print, "ENTRANCE TO PORTSMOUTH ", by Donald Maxwell, a view of yachts, a warship and the town, border marked to the left otherwise fine. A scarce example only offered once previously. - Sold for £300 Lot 239 A shedplate "34E", Neasden (1949-February 1958, then New England until January 1965 for steam and September 1968 completely). The ex GCR shed at Neasden was home to 80 locos in the 1950s including several A3s and a handful of B1 Antelopes. It was transferred to the LMS (14D) and the ex GNR shed at New England (35A) took over the code. Well over locos were housed at New England, mostly noted for its A2s and latterly the displaced A3s and A4s from Kings Cross. The front repainted with silver grey characters, the back in original condition. - Sold for £230 Lot 240 A Great Western Railway pre-grouping enamel poster board heading with yellow, black and red shaded lettering on a brown background, 27"x6_", chips at edges and corners neatly filled and colour matched, a very decorative style. - Sold for £260 Lot 241 An industrial locomotive nameplate "LUNDIE", from a 0-6-0ST O/C built by Andrew Barclay, Works No 1091, in 1906. It went new to Cardiff Steam Coal Collieries Ltd at Llanbradach, which in 1911 became known as Cardiff Collieries Ltd, as their No 1. In January 1947 it became National Coal Board property. In September 1961 it went to Tredegar Central Workshops but by July 1963 was at NCB Bedwas Colliery where it was scrapped on site in 1968. Cast brass with serif lettering and scalloped corners, 30"x6_", the background repainted dark green long ago. - Sold for £760 Lot 242 A South Eastern and Chatham Railway 12" dial dropcase clock, the face marked "S.E. & CR 1014". The clock is complete with its spun brass bezel, pendulum and key and is in working order. The back of the case is stamped "1014 SE" and the number is shown again on a brass plate inside the right hand door - of note the case has a glazed aperture though which the pendulum can be seen. Lot 243 An original watercolour painting of LMS Class 5, 4-6-0, No 5525, by Victor Welch. The loco stands outside the shed in lined black livery, while behind a maroon Midland Compound can be glimpsed. The body, top and original slide in vessel stamped N.E.R. and the vessel brass plated "STODDART". Lovely original condition and similar in style to those carried by LNER A4 Class locomotives. - Sold for £480 Lot 251 A Great Western Railway cast iron cabside numberplate "7245", from a 7200 Class 2-8-2T rebuilt at Swindon in May 1938 from the earlier 4200 Class 2-8-0T No 4205 which was built in February 1912, one of the earliest members of the Class to be rebuilt as a 2-8-2T. It spent almost all its BR days at Ebbw Junction before moving in 1963 to Aberbeeg and then Radyr fropm where it was withdrawn in September 1964 and cut up two months later at Hayes, Bridgend. The front repainted. - Sold for £620 Lot 252 A Railway Executive (Western Region) double royal poster "PORTHCAWL, for happy healthy holidays", by Armeugol (PR29). RAILWAY NEW HOLLAND", 13" high, 7" diameter. - Sold for £270 Lot 256 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet "DEREHAM - NORTH ELMHAM", (fibre), from the Great Eastern Railway's Wymondham to Fakenham and Wells-Next-The-Sea route. After the line was closed to passengers on 5th October 1964, the freight services were progressively cut back from the north with the remaining section to North Elmham surviving until 1989 (although tablet working ceased much earlier), long enough to see the line reopened for passenger traffic. - Sold for £130 Lot 257 A locomotive nameplate, "BON ACCORD", from the (LNER) A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60154 built at Doncaster, Works No 2048, in September 1949 and named when built. It was allocated new to Gateshead, moving in 1960 to York and in 1963 to Neville Hill from where it was withdrawn in October 1965 and was cut up two months later at Wards, Beighton, Sheffield. The plate is 57_" long, the front background repainted black, the back untouched and bearing the usual list of locomotive names, cast in, which shared the same length nameplate (Woodcock, Silver King, Sun Stream, Steady Aim, Book Law, etc, etc). The loco was named after the motto of the City of Aberdeen, using the same name as that given to an ex North British Railway Class C11 4-4-2. - Sold for £16700 Lot 258 A shedplate "26B", Agecroft (1935-September 1963). This ex LYR shed housed 50 locos in the 1950s but by the time it was recoded 9J this number had halved. Closure came in October 1966. The front repainted, the back in original condition other than being marked "45718", the BR number of the LMS Jubilee "Dreadnought" which was withdrawn from Agecroft in October 1962. At Tolcarne, the line to Par diverged. A replacement key end has been fitted as these were removed by the S&T Dept before the keys were originally sold in the 1960s. - Sold for £150 Lot 263 A South Devon Railway paycheck, cast white metal, each side bearing the full company name in serif lettering around the edge with the number "75" stamped in the centre, circular, 1_" diameter. The company ran between Exeter St Davids and Plymouth and branches and was absorbed by the Great Western Railway in 1878. Lot 264 An LMS/BR(M) maroon wooden fingerboard "BLACKPOOL", 54_"x5_", almost certainly from Preston station. - Sold for £140 Lot 265 A carriage print "OLD BRIDGE HOUSE, AMBLESIDE, WESTMORELAND, A National Trust Property", by Ronald A.Maddox. A fine scene of the Lakeland town, featuring the unusual property built over the river. - Sold for £200 Lot 266 An LMS drinking glass with a large garter "LMS, RAILWAYMANS INSTITUTE, EUSTON", below the rim. - Sold for £170 Lot 267 A Llynfi and Ogmore Railway milepost top "_". The company built its line from Nantyffyllon to Abergwynfi in 1878 as an extension of the Llynfi Valley lines from Llanaran and Maesteg, the whole system being absorbed by the Great Western Railway in 1880. This is the top of the post comprising the oval head, 9"x7", with a 3_" shaped base, the rest absent. The post dates from the lines construction in the 1860s/70s. - Sold for £75 Lot 268 A County Donegal Railways Joint Committee mounted coat of arms transfer, featuring a central shield with garter surround, overall 15"x16", with a red background and beading. - Sold for £60 Lot 269 A Great Northern Railway signal box telegraph instrument, incorporating a writing slope. An early circular faced example with moulded surround and complete with handle, sounding bars and needle. The side has a brass frame, which holds a printed card for the Crescent Junction to Essendine circuit and lists boxes inc Westwood, New England, Werrington, Helpston, Lolham, etc. Excellent original condition other than a very old crack in the wood surround to the face. - Sold for £180 Lot 270 A cast iron gate notice "GREAT WESTERN & MIDLAND JOINT COMMITTEE, BY 8 VIC.CAP.20.5.75. ANY PERSON NOT FASTENING THIS GATE AFTER HAVING PASSED THROUGH IS LIABLE TO A PENALTY OF FORTY SHILLINGS". The front repainted, the back in original condition, 29_"x10_". These signs were used on the Severn and Wye Joint Line as well as on the Avonmouth branch. - Sold for £440 Lot 271 A BR(S) light green totem sign "BALCOMBE", (f/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's Main Line between Three Bridges and Haywards Heath. Excellent colour and shine, just a few minor chips on the flange edge repainted. - Sold for £280 Lot 272 A carriage print "BERWICK ON TWEED, NORTHUMBERLAND, from a water colour by John C.Moody, R.E. R.I". A superb view of the old river bridge and town viewed from the beach at Tweedmouth. A scarce example, rarely offered for sale. - Sold for £150 Lot 273 A road sign "HOSPITAL", featuring a shield with Maltese Cross shape cut out and thirty-six glass beads, riveted to the backplate, overall 12"x21" with the manufacturer's name "Franco Traffic Signs" cast at the right base. The sign is unrestored though the paint is peeling in places. - Sold for £180 Lot 274 A Webb and Thompson large single line train staff "UPMINSTER-OCKENDON", from the London Tilbury and Southend Railway's Romford to West Thurrock Junction (Grays) route. Tubular steel with brass rings, the names engraved at the right end which is painted yellow. - Sold for £130 Lot 275 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway signalling instrument plate "BUCKLEY WELLS", engraved brass, 5"x_" with scalloped corners. The plate refers to a box just south of Bury Bolton Street. - Sold for £150 Lot 276 A shedplate "32A", Norwich Thorpe (1949-April 1962 for steam, completely in 1992). This ex GER shed housed 130 locos, being most noted for its stud of 21 Britannias in the late 1950s. The front repainted though the back untouched. - Sold for £200 Lot 277 A smokebox numberplate "84013", from a BR Standard Class 2 2-6-2T built at Crewe in 1953 and allocated new to Low Moor. A much travelled engine, its later sheds were Bank Hall, Lees, Bolton, Stockport, Leicester and back to Stockport. At the end of 1965 there was a proposal to use ten of the Class, including 84013, on the Isle of Wight and they were officially shown as transferred to the Southern Region. The proposal was, however, quickly abandoned and 84013 was withdrawn in December 1965 and, after three months in store at Stockport, cut up at Arnott Young, Parkgate & Rawmarsh in March 1966. Original unrestored condition. - Sold for £1550 Lot 278 A BR(N) double royal poster "WHITLEY BAY", by Davies (56-7), featuring a blonde in a purple swimming costume on the beach, her sun hat laid on the sand and a poodle with its ball to her right, in the background the lighthouse and pavilion. The poster is folded and has a small corner missing top left only affecting the border. - Sold for £460 Lot 279 A London and North Western Railway three aspect handlamp, the side clearly stamped "SWANBOURNE P. WAY, A13185" and "LNWR". It is complete with its original vessel stamped LNWR and its original burner with "LNWR" emblazoned on the china top, excellent restored condition with the copper cone and bezel polished. Swanbourne was on the Bicester to Bletchley section of the Oxford to Cambridge route. - Sold for £360 Lot 280 A locomotive worksplate "BEYER PEACOCK & Co LTD, 7510, BEYER-GARRATT LOCOMOTIVE, BRITISH PATENTS...., MANCHESTER 1953" from a Rhodesian Railways 3'6" gauge 2-8-2+2-8-2 Class 16A Garratt No 632. Although many of the Class were withdrawn by the late 1970s, No 632 was instead refurbished and returned to traffic on 9th October 1979. Cast brass oval, 10_"x6_", paint cleaned off the front, otherwise unrestored. - Sold for £200 Lot 281 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign "PONTYPRIDD", (h/f), from the Taff Vale Railway's route from Cardiff to Merthyr and Treherbert. Excellent colour and shine, edge chips repainted and also one tiny face chip. - Sold for £400 Lot 282 A Southern Railway carriage print "BATTLE ABBEY, SUSSEX", by Donald Maxwell, a lovely view of the ivy clad ruins painted in the artist's timeless style. It is of the usual style with hexagonal surround to the head, glazed door to the dropcase and label inside with instructions and maker's name. Fine original condition, of note is the label pasted over that of the maker, indicating that the clock was supplied by J Ritchie of Princes St, Edinburgh, the well- known supplier of the superb long case clocks to the N.B.R and other Scottish companies. - Sold for £180 Lot 302 A Great Western Railway brass signal box shelf plate "PILNING JUNCTION". The box was on the South Wales main line just east of Pilning station on the approach to the Severn Tunnel. The base bears the Royal Doulton lion and crown impression and the number 1711. The jug is 7" high. - Sold for £110 Lot 306 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign "ST NEOTS", (h/f), from the Great Northern Railway's East Coast Main Line and situated between Sandy and Huntingdon. A couple of minor chips on the letters and chipping into the blue above and below the four outer fixings in the flanges, excellent colour and shine. Lot 307 A locomotive worksplate "AVONSIDE ENGINE Co LIMITED, 1619, 1912, BRISTOL" from a 0-6-0ST O/C which spent all its working life at the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board. It was scrapped in November 1961. Cast brass oval 10_"x 6_", repainted dark maroon, the front polished. - Sold for £300 Lot 308 A Great Western Railway green linen antimacassar, 16"x13", with a large 6" diameter roundel embroidered in the centre, an unusual colour, excellent condition. - Sold for £75 Lot 309 A smokebox numberplate "92057", from a BR Standard Class 9 2-10-0 built at Crewe in 1955 and allocated new to Toton. Its later sheds were Westhouses, Cricklewood, Annesley, Saltley and Birkenhead from where it was withdrawn in September 1965. After thre months in store at Birkenhead, it was cut up at Wards, Beighton, Sheffield in December 1965. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £500 Lot 310 A builder's plate "JOHN MILLS & Co B.770, Railway Foundry, Llanidloes, Mont". Although an interesting plate, especially with its "Railway Foundry" address, we have been unable to trace any recorded involverment of this company in the production of any type of railway equipment. Furthermore, although there was a siding in the station yard at Llanidloes, we have been unable to establish whether or not it was used by this company. Although the company did not build locomotives or rolling stock, it produced a wide variety of industrial equipment. The plate is of a traditional design and is from a particularly unusual location. Cast brass oval, 7"x4", the front lightly cleaned. - Sold for £300 Lot 311 An East Lincolnshire Railway brass seal, with a small oval head engraved with the full company name and a large, almost spherical, handle. Overall 3_" high, the head 5/8"x_". The catalogue image has been reversed to show the seal as at would appear when used. - Sold for £400 Lot 312 An Electric locomotive worksplate "A.E.I. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, 1960 ----THE BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON Co LTD", from a BR Type A Bo-Bo electric in the number series E3001-23 and E3096-7. Cast brass rectangle, 13"x11_", incorporating the oval motif of AEI and the Star motif of BRCW. The front repainted rail blue and black over traces of the original paint with the characters and motifs lightly polished, the back just lightly cleaned. - Sold for £900 Lot 313 A "UNITED, BUS STOP" sign, cast aluminium, 12"x16", with integral fixing cap for post, original condition, double sided and with the company name in red. The company operated in the North Yorkshire area. - Sold for £90 Lot 314 A carriage print "RAILWAY ARCHITECTURE, ST PANCRAS STATION, LONDON", by Claude Buckle. An impressive view of the famous Midland Terminus now beautifully restored and transformed into the Eurostar terminal. - Sold for £90 Lot 315 A locomotive worksplate "SIR W.G. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & Co LTD, No 959, 1928, SCOTSWOOD WORKS, NEWCASTLE ON TYNE" from a GWR 5600 Class 0-6-2T No 6671 which spent most of its BR days at St Philip's Marsh before moving to Worcester, Leamington Spa and finally Banbury from where it was withdrawn in October 1965. After four months in store at Banbury, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in May 1966. Cast brass rectangle, 8_"x5", cleaned but not repainted, unusually all four bolt holes are undamaged. - Sold for £210 Lot 316 An LNER signal finial, 30" high with square base and circular ball and spike repainted. The side marked with company initials. - Sold for £110 Lot 317 A live steam model of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway 0-4-2 locomotive "LION", 4" gauge and 24_" long on a section of track in a display case. Overall 28"x14_" and 9" deep. The locomotive was immortalised in the 1950s film "The Titfield Thunderbolt" and is currently in York Museum. - Sold for £1250 Lot 318 A single line key token "ST DENNIS JC - DRINNICK MILL". The section includes the eastern end of Treffrys Railway which ran from Newquay Harbour to Parcandillick and was opened in 1849. The southern extension of 1874 connected the route with the Burngullow to Drinnick Mill line. Always freight and china clay branches, this section closed in 1965. Replaced key end, as these were removed by the S&T Dept before sale in the 1960s. - Sold for £170 Lot 319 A diesel locomotive nameplate "CONQUEST, WARSHIP CLASS", from a North British built "Warship" Class 41 No D603. Built at the NBL Works in Glasgow, Works No 27663, it was one of only five diesel hydraulics in this Class built for the Western Region. Delivered in November 1958 to Laira, it spent most of its working life there, with a brief spell at Landore in South Wales. Withdrawn in December 1967, it was cut up eleven months later at Cashmores, Newport. Cast aluminium, 39_"x11", the front repainted red over the original paintwork, the back has plenty of pitting and oxidization and green paint in places. The D600 Class Warships were the first Diesel Class to be named and consisted of only five locomotives. Of the ten plates, two are in York Museum, at least two others in well-known collections and unlikely to move, so a rare opportunity to acquire an example from this class. - Sold for £11200 Lot 320 A BR(S) light green totem sign "POLEGATE", (f/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's Lewes to Hastings route and situated just north of Eastbourne. The station was originally the junction for the Cuckoo line to Eridge. Excellent colour and shine, no face chips. - Sold for £220 Lot 321 A London and North Western Railway locomotive tenderplate "L&NWR, No 4", cast iron rectangle, 11_"x4_", probably repainted after removal. - Sold for £160 Lot 322 A BR(W) presentation pocket watch, Vertex Revue, gold plated and complete with second hand. The inner case is engraved "BR LONDON MIDLAND REGION, F.W.FENNELL, IN GRATEFUL APPRECIATION OF 45 YEARS SERVICE". The watch is in working order and presented in its original box marked Wilson & Gill, Jewellers, London. - Sold for £280 Lot 323 An enamel sign "ROYAL BLUE, COACH STOP", dark blue lettering and border on cream, 12_"x10_", double sided, excellent condition, colour and shine. - Sold for £110 Lot 324 A London and South Western Railway leather harness decoration with a variety of horse brasses, including a pair of LSWR rectangular examples and Southern and other decorative examples, overall 50" long with fourteen brasses. - Sold for £140 Lot 325 A carriage print "LOCH ETIVE, ARGYLL, from a water colour by Jack Merriott R.I." A dramatic view looking up the loch toward Glen Etive, Buachaille Mor and The Three Sisters in the distance. The Oban Line between Tainuilt and Connell Ferry runs along the south end of the loch. This is the scarcer long version of this view. - Sold for £100 Lot 326 A Smokebox Numberplate "78063", from a BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 built at Darlington in 1956 and allocated new to Wigan Central. Its later sheds were Willesden, Nuneaton and Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn in December 1966. It was cut up a year later at Cashmores, Newport. The numbers probably repainted, otherwise original condition. - Sold for £600 Lot 327 A London and South Western Railway enamel notice "L&SWR, NOTICE, TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED, BY ORDER". As the company used cast iron Trespass notices, this is an extremely rare example and comes from the original Town Station in Chard, which closed to passengers on 1st January 1917. It has a couple of face chips and a chip at the top left, otherwise fine condition. - Sold for £1150 Lot 328 An LNER quad royal poster "ITS QUICKER BY RAIL, SIXTEEN L.N.E.R, RAMBLING GUIDES", by Tom Purvis. A superb 1930s view of ladies seated and standing in a carriage viewed from outside. The poster has been professionally mounted on linen and is presented in a high quality solid oak frame. - Sold for £1400 Lot 329 A London and South Western Railway four aspect fogman's handlamp. The case and top are clearly stamped L&SWR, the body is complete with a brass top band and bezel, BR(S) vessel of the correct style and other than a crack to the base of the orange glass is in excellent condition, the top has signs of red paintwork and a brass plate "143". - Sold for £100 Lot 330 A locomotive worksplate "PECKETT & SONS LTD 1927, No 1723, BRISTOL" from a 0-4-0ST O/C, Peckett Type W6, which spent all its working life at Settle Speakman Ltd at Queenborough Wharf and was scrapped in June 1960. (similar style surface to LMS Hawkseye signs) - Sold for £90 Lot 332 A BR(S) dark green totem sign "COBHAM AND STOKE D'ABERNON", (h/f), from the London and South Western Railway's Hampton Court Junction (Surbiton) to Guildford route, excellent colour and shine with just minor edge rust repainted on the white flange. - Sold for £360 Lot 333 A Great Eastern Railway time clock by Gledhill Brook Time Recorders Ltd, Huddersfield. A table top or portable example, comprising of a 4_" diameter face, a brass surrounded aperture in which to sign name on paper roll, with a pencil on spring chain above. The case is 14"x16" and sloping, with a handle on the left operating the mechanism and bell. It is equipped with wooden rollers for the paper and ink ribbon and is complete with winding key and the original instructions "The Desk Autograph Time Recorder". The inside rim of the case is prominently stamped "GER" and "24763", an unusual example in fine original condition. Lot 334 A locomotive worksplate "THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC Co LTD, VULCAN WORKS, NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS, ENGLAND, No 3347/D833.1963", from a BR Class 37 diesel electric D6869. Delivered in August 1963 to Landore, it was renumbered 37169 in May 1975 and then 37674 in June 1987. In December 1995 it was named "SAINT BLAISE CHURCH 1445-1995" at St Blazey depot by Uny Bowers, son of the Rev Malcolm Bowers, vicar of the Church. The loco was sold in May 2007 to the Stainmore Railway at Kirkby Stephen where it is now awaiting restoration. Rectangular brass, 10_"x4_", the plate has been re-chromed and the front painted rail blue. - Sold for £190 Lot 335 A Southern Railway carriage print "WEYMOUTH, DORSET", featuring a sepia photographic view of sailing ship in the harbour. The print is contained in an original South Eastern and Chatham Railway frame. - Sold for £150 Lot 336 A Southern Railway enamel target sign "BICKLEY", from the London Chatham and Dover Railway's main line and situated just to the west of Bromley South. Good colour and shine, the white a little discoloured and just the usual edge and screw hole surround chips all neatly restored. - Sold for £120 Lot 337 A Great Western Railway cast iron cabside numberplate "6618", from a Great Western Railway 5600 Class 0-6-2T built at Swindon Works in December 1927 under Lot No.244. New to Cardiff Cathays it was withdrawn from Tyseley in November 1963. A Collett design used in the Welsh Valleys. The front repainted, the back in completely original condition. - Sold for £880 Lot 338 A single line key token "ST BLAZEY - ST BLAZEY BRIDGE CROSSING", (alloy/brass head). The first section on the Great Western Railway's Par to Newquay branch, at the beginning of the long climb through to Luxulyan valley. The head has been changed by BR to alter the key's configuration and shows plenty of signs of use. - Sold for £250 Lot 339 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway double line block instrument with an engraved brass plate "HORROCKSFORD JCT". This box was on the company' Blackburn to Hellifield route where the cement works branch diverged. The instrument has a small type LNWR "dog kennel" block bell mounted on the top of the case. - Sold for £260 Lot 340 A shedplate "53B", Hull Botanic Gardens (1949-February 1959, recoded to 50B, closed to steam June 1959, then a DMU depot until 1987). This ex NER shed had 14 LNER D49 "namers" among its allocation of 50 locos in the 1950s. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £170 Lot 341 An enamel advertising sign "GO TO F. ALLEN, 8 DUKE STREET, NORTHAMPTON, FOR PRAM & MAIL CART WHEELS, RUBBER TYRES CEMENTED OR WIRED ON, WORK DONE FOR THE TRADE, TRIAL SOLICITED". An unusual example with illustration of wheels and tyre, the name in a decorative scroll, some face and edge chips which could easily be restored, 48"x24", red and black on white and the manufacturer's name "Falkirk Iron Co", lower right. - Sold for £150 Lot 342 A cast iron trespass notice, "GREAT CENTRAL, HULL & BARNSLEY AND MIDLAND COMMITTEE, PUBLIC WARNING PERSONS ARE WARNED NOT TO TRESPASS ON THIS RAILWAY OR ANY OF THE LINES STATIONS WORKS OR PREMISES CONNECTED THEREWITH, ANY PERSON SO TRESPASSING IS LIABLE TO A PENALTY OF FORTY SHILLINGS, BY ORDER, SEP 1909". The front repainted, the back in original condition, 28_"x17_", the title and date on separate plates. A rare triple joint example used on the Braithwell Junction to Laughton Junction section of the Doncaster to Shireoaks route - Sold for £700 Lot 343 A North Eastern Railway four aspect handlamp with copper bezel and copper wire bound handle, together with an "LNER LOCO" three aspect handlamp with piecrust top and brass plate "W.GROSSETT". (2) - Sold for £95 Lot 344 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign "TORKESEY", (h/f), from the Great Central Railway's Retford to Lincoln route. Passenger services were withdrawn from the direct line between Clarborough Junction and Sykes Junction on 2nd November 1959 and the route diverted via Gainsborough. The central section of the line closed immediately, though oil traffic continued to Torkesey until 1988. Excellent colour and very good shine, slightly dulled in one or two places, a chip at the top left just into the blue and a few minor edge chips all neatly repainted. - Sold for £600 Lot 345 An Edwardian china bowl, featuring an illustration of a London Brighton and South Coast Railway 4-4-0, with Pullman, improbably emerging from the south portal of Shugborough Tunnel on the West Coast Main Line. The rim is marked "Baby's Plate" and the picture titled "Puff Puff", 8" diameter with heavy base and wide rim, excellent condition. - Sold for £40 Lot 346 A locomotive nameplate "THE GREEN KNIGHT" from the BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No 73086 built at Derby in 1955 and named in December 1959. It was allocated new to Stewarts Lane and later moved to Nine Elms from where it was withdrawn in October 1966. It was cut up at Cashmores, Newport in March 1967. The name was previously carried on the "King Arthur" Class engine No 30754 which was withdrawn in 1953 and relates to the title by which Sir Pertolepe was known in Arthurian legend. The front background repainted, the back in completely original condition, 52_" long. - Sold for £6000 Lot 347 An LMS sepia carriage print "STOKESAY CASTLE, SHROPSHIRE", (photographic), one of the smaller LMS prints showing a fine view of the buildings near Craven Arms, at the north end of the Central Wales line. - Sold for £80 Lot 348 Artwork for a Great Western Railway double royal poster "G.W.R. VISIT THE CAMBRIAN COAST AND LIVE FOREVER, GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY". The image features an old sailor smoking his pipe, the sea and Welsh mountains beyond. Framed and glazed, details on reverse, a fine example, well before the days of the Trade Descriptions Act, when the company could offer immortality! - Sold for £190 Lot 349 A North Eastern Railway signal box shelf plate "GARDEN LANE". The box Garden Lane Junction was situated just outside South Shields station where the direct route to Tyne Dock diverged from the route via High Shields. Engraved brass, 14"x11/8", the back engraved "BRANCH LINE NORTH". - Sold for £50 Lot 350 A smokebox numberplate "2841", from a GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in October 1912. A much travelled engine, its BR sheds were Shrewsbury, Pontypool Road, Oxley, Tyseley, Worcester, Stourbridge, Oxley, Banbury, Reading and finally Southall from where it was withdrawn in December 1963. After nearly a year in store at Southall, it was cut up at Hayes, Bridgend in December 1964. The front appears to have been repainted long ago. - Sold for £490 Lot 351 A tenderplate "GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY 1C MAKERS 1908, DUNDALK" made by this Irish company for a prototype tender of Type 1C. These tenders were intended as replacements for Type B1 2500 gallon tenders although it is not clear whether even the prototype was actually built. Cast brass oval, 9_"x6", the characters and rim polished. - Sold for £320 Lot 352 A Great Eastern Railway platform wall lamp with a steel plate "NEWMARKET", glazed three sides, 22" high, 14" wide. The station was on the company's Cambridge to Ipswich route. - Sold for £140 Lot 353 A Great Western Railway 1947 double line block instrument in excellent condition, complete with commutator and the usual flaps. - Sold for £220 Lot 354 A Great Western Railway cash bag plate "G.W.R, PADDINGTON "D", BOOKING OFFICE", engraved brass, 2_"x1_", retaining two fixing studs on the back. The "D" or Down Office was situated on Platform One and remained open all night, it retained its Edmondson Ticket Stock well after the main office was mechanised, all tickets having the "D" shown at the top. - Sold for £50 Lot 355 A locomotive worksplate "GENERAL ELECTRIC DIESEL - ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE, MODEL USB, WEIGHT 112000/112000, SERIAL NO 34805, HP 600/540, DATE OF MFR JUNE 1963, MAINT INST GEI - 74381 LOCOMOTIVE AND CAR EQUIPMENT DEPARTMENT, ERIE, PA. MADE IN U.S.A.". The plate is most probably from a North American Switcher locomotive. Cast aluminium 14"x5", the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £55 Lot 356 Two pairs of "LMS Hotels" small 4" sugar tongs by Mappin & Webb, with the company name within a laurel leaf surround. (2) - Sold for £140 Lot 357 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign "DUNRAGIT", (f/f), from the Glasgow and South Western (Portpatrick & Wigtown Joint) route from Stranraer and situated just west of Challock Junction where the lines to Carlisle and Glasgow diverge. The station closed along with the route to Carlisle on 14th June 1965. Good colour, slight loss of shine. - Sold for £350 Lot 358 A carriage print "LINCOLN, from a water colour by Henry Rushbury R.A.". A superb view of the town as seen from the train crossing the river, looking up to the Cathedral, with mills on the right. The print is in its original titled mount and frame, similar to the LNER First Series. Lot 359 A Railway Executive (Western Region) double royal poster "COME TO CONEY BEACH, PORTHCAWL", by Ameurol (PR.28), featuring a girl on horseback on a merry-go-round, the beach and roller coaster beyond. Rolled, excellent condition. Lot 360 A shedplate "55F", Bradford Manningham (October 1956-April 1967). Formerly 20E, this ex Midland shed was home to 25 locos. The plate is repainted. - Sold for £180 Lot 361 A BR(Sc) light blue enamel sign "ENQUIRIES & RESERVATIONS", (f/f), excellent colour and shine, 28"x10", with just a few minor edge chips matched in. - Sold for £260 Lot 362 A Great Western Railway Duplex vacuum gauge indicating 0-30 for Train Pipe and Reservoir. The engraved face is prominently marked with the "GWR" initials which are also stamped into the front of the 7" brass case. - Sold for £190 Lot 363 A London and Scottish Railway 12" dial dropcase wall clock, with fusee movement, brass bezel, pendulum and key. The original face is marked "LM &SR", the clock is housed in a high quality replacement case with doors to the side and base. - Sold for £200 Lot 364 A locomotive worksplate "BRUSH, BRUSH ELECTRICAL MACHINES LIMITED, LOUGHBOROUGH ENGLAND, A HAWKER SIDDELEY COMPANY, LOCOMOTIVE No 763, YEAR 1976". This plate was designated for No 56014, one of the first batch of thirty Class 56 diesel electric locos (56001-30) but the order was outsourced to Electroputere in Romania. When the locos arrived in the UK Brush were so appalled by the state of them that they refused to fit the plates, and the locos were then fitted with amended Brush plates acknowledging their actual origins When No 56014 arrived at Harwich in January 1977, it went straight to Tinsley, then to Barrow Hill for storage. It entered traffic in March 1977 but suffered a major accident at West Burton Power Station which necessitated repairs at Doncaster Works. It returned to traffic in March 1982 at Toton but was sold to Raxstar in about 1995 and cut up at Immingham by Raxstar staff by April 2000. Aluminium rectangle, 8"x3_", the characters cast in, the works number engraved. The plate appears unused and was probably not fitted to a locomotive. - Sold for £160 Lot 365 A Southern Railway enamel doorplate "PARCELS AND CLOAKROOM", a bit of surface wear and minor chips on the white and around the screw holes, excellent colour, slightly dull. - Sold for £55 Lot 366 A London and North Western Railway carbide handlamp with black body and brass front, handle and fittings. It is embossed with the company initials on the top, base and front, excellent restored condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 367 An LNER quad royal poster "ITS QUICKER BY RAIL, EAST COAST BY LNER, PENNY A MILE MONTHLY RETURN TICKETS", by Tom Purvis. The image features a mother and father and boy and girl in a carriage, the boy waving a spade. The poster is mounted on linen and presented in a high quality solid oak frame. - Sold for £1300 Lot 368 A smokebox numberplate "9728", from a GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in December 1934. It spent most of its BR days at Chester before moving in 1960 to Abercynon from where it was withdrawn in May 1962 and, after three months in store at Swindon Works, cut up at Cashmores, Newport the following September. The numbers possibly repainted, otherwise original condition. - Sold for £380 Lot 369 A North Eastern Railway signal box lever description board from "BOG HALL". The box was situated just outside Whitby Town on the route to Grosmont and Pickering and controlled the yard and branch to Prospect Hill on the Scarborough to Middlesborough coast route. The board is 166" long overall, in three sections, one join is jointed as made, the other cut for ease of transportation. The wordings include references to Engine Shed, Goods Yard, etc. A 12"x_" section has been cut at the top centre to accommodate a maker's plate or equipment. The board is accompanied by a sketch of the track layout. - Sold for £220 Lot 370 A Great Western Railway cast iron cabside numberplate "5326", from a 43XX "Mogul" Class 2-6-0 built at Swindon, Works No 2698, in September 1917. In January 1926 it was, with others of the Class, modified by moving the buffer beam forward and renumbered 8326. It reverted to its original number in June 1944 but with cast iron numberplates instead of the orginal brass plates. A much travelled engine in BR days, its sheds were Wesbury, Chester, Worcester, Reading, Didcot and finally St Philips Marsh from where it was withdrawn in March 1962 and cut up the following month at Swindon Works. The front repainted. - Sold for £540 Lot 371 A Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway non pegging block instrument, with red needle indicating "Train On Line/Line Closed/Line Clear". The face below is marked "Tyers Patent", the top of the case is marked "MSL Ry", while on the lower part of the case is an enamel maker's plate "Tyers Patent, Train Signalling Telegraphs, Offices and Works, London", which is in pretty good condition, a little chipping at the ends only. There is also an ivorine plate at the top "Up Goods Line". - Sold for £260 Lot 372 A BR(M) maroon totem sign "HUYTON", (f/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Liverpool and Manchester main line and situated between Broad Green and Rainhill. Excellent colour and shine, a small face chip and two edge chips into the maroon filled and colour matched, hardly noticeable. - Sold for £320 Lot 373 A Southern Railway enamel sign "CLOAK ROOM", white on green, 28_"x16", one small face chip near the right edge and the usual edge chipping. Small 4" diameter body, but 12_" tall with piecrust top and square top handle. The lamp is complete with its original vessel with screw in burner, reflector (L&NER, J Levick, B'ham), copper bezel and brass plate "R.TATE". It is attractively repainted. - Sold for £140 Lot 375 A cast iron notice, "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NOTICE, NO UNAUTHORISED PERSON ALLOWED IN THIS BOX, BY ORDER", 11"x63/8", the front repainted cream on brown, the back untouched. - Sold for £170 Lot 376 A Diesel locomotive nameplate "WESTERN HUSSAR" and its matching cabside numberplate "D1028", and Worksplate from Swindon built "Western" Class 52 diesel hydraulic delivered new in February 1964 to Bristol Bath Road. It spent all its working life allocated to the Western Region and was withdrawn from Laira in October 1976 and cut up at Swindon Works in June 1979. The front of the plate is restored, the back lightly cleaned. A wooden mount is provided for each plate, though these are not attached at present. The Nameplate measures 86"x8", the cabside 35"x10" a little distortion to the beading in places, the Worksplate 10"x6" (3) - Sold for £7400 Lot 377 A Great Western Railway carriage print "DUNMORE, Co WATERFORD", a colour view by the Photochrom Co of a traditional seaside village. - Sold for £25 Lot 378 An original painting by Alex Williams, featuring four diesel locomotives, Class 08 Shunter, 37.422 in EWS livery, Deltic and Electro Diesel, arranged one above the other. Oil on board, 17_"x24". The painting was used for a birthday card design, unusual, something completely different. - Sold for £75 Lot 379 A North Eastern Railway enamel doorplate "PARCELS OFFICE", reddish brown lettering and thin border on cream, with black edge, some edge chip repairs, mainly outside border, otherwise a good example with excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £360 Lot 380 A Great Western Railway banking engine staff, the brass handle inscribed "PENYGRAIG BANK ENG", from the Ely Valley Line that ran from Llantrisant to Penygraig and on to Clydach Vale Colliery. The staff comprises a ground frame or instrument key and large oval brass handle stamped with the wording, overall 4_"x7", a rare example. - Sold for £500 Lot 381 A North British Railway pegging block instrument, the needle assembly marked "Train On Line/Line Clear/Line Blocked" with "Down Line" on the green surround above, the pegging handle has a trigger on top, the instrument is in fine condition and complete with the ceramic terminal markers "A,B,Y&Z" inside. - Sold for £110 Lot 382 An LNER cast iron seatback plate "POLMONT", from the North British Railway's Edinburgh to Glasgow main line. Excellent other than minor wear at the top left. - Sold for £70 Lot 389 A shedplate "3A", Bescot (1935-June 1960). This ex LNWR shed was home to over 80 locos in 1960 when it was recoded to 21B. It closed to steam in March 1966. The plate repainted long ago. - Sold for £120 Lot 390 A Great Northern Railway signal box telegraph Instrument with handle and sounding bars. It lacks its writing slope and circuit card frame to the side, otherwise it is in good original condition. - Sold for £60 Lot 391 A North Eastern Railway large brass train staff for use with staff and ticket working, "MELMERBY NORTH & TOPCLIFFE", from the company's Melmerby to Thirsk and Thirsk Town branch which linked the Harrogate to Northallerton route with the East Coast Main Line. The brass body is stamped with the names in serif lettering, has two small steel "keys" at the end, at the other end the circular body narrows into a square bar with a circular knob at the end, to which a hook is fixed. This clip is in turn fixed to a figure "8" shaped clip and a larger spring clip, with two padlock keys and a brass tag "KING LEVER, TOPCLIFFE BRANCH". The overall length is 15", a very early and unusual item. - Sold for £1300 Lot 392 A Caledonian Railway three aspect handlamp, complete with its interior and original green glass, the case and the top both stamped "CALEDONIAN", though with different numbers. The lamp has been restored. - Sold for £250 Lot 393 A Great Northern Railway brass hand bell, with a 6_" diameter base. The side is clearly marked with the company initials in 1" high serif lettering. (2) - Sold for £160 Lot 402 A BR(S) light green totem sign "MITCHAM JUNCTION", (f/f), from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway's station where the routes from Wimbledon to Croydon and Sutton to Peckham meet. Excellent colour and shine, a chip just into the green at each end and lower right, all neatly filled and the colour expertly matched. - Sold for £330 Lot 403 A North Eastern Railway brass signal box shelf plate "No 1 DOWN GOODS", with prominent engraved lettering, 14_"x11/8", with much original black wax infill remaining. (10) - Sold for £190 Lot 420 A locomotive worksplate "BUILT, 1959, DARLINGTON", removed from a BR Class 08 diesel shunter, either D3697 or D3698, during rebuilding into a slave unit to be matched with either D4187, as D4502 (13002), or D4188, as D4500 (13003). Modification took place at Darlington Works where this plate was removed in 1965. The three new master and slave units were then delivered to Tinsley for shunting the famous hump system in the adjoining yard. Cast iron oval, 10_"x 6_", in ex loco condition with original green paintwork and brake dust around the lettering. - Sold for £240 Lot 421 A single line key token "INVERGORDON - KILDARY", (chromed steel), from the Highland Railway's Inverness to Wick and Thurso "Far North" line. This section was extended to Invergordon - Tain in 1960, when Kildary station and box closed. It has a short chain attached with a bar "20 YEARS", 7/8" diameter, excellent condition. - Sold for £260 Lot 428 A fine LMS domed dish cover with decorative top handle, the side showing the company initials in a monogram formed of block serif letters, 11_"x9_" and 8_" high, with the maker's name Walker & Hall inside. It stands on a non matching LMS serving platter, nevertheless an impressive pair. (2) - Sold for £45 Lot 429 A BR(S) light green totem sign "KINGSTON", (f/f), from the London and South Western Railway's New Maldon to Richmond route. The station is close to the River Thames. Excellent colour and shine, a small face chip on the "T" and a knock to the left end and a few edge chips and surface marks. - Sold for £180 Lot 430 A shedplate "82C", Swindon (1949-April 1965 to steam, completely 1970). This ex GWR shed had an allocation of 120 locos in the 1950s when it was home to 7 Castles, 7 Saints, 4 Bulldogs, 6 Stars and 12 Halls. In its final year its most famous loco was the last active County, No 1011 "County of Chester". The front repainted, the back cleaned but some evidence of the old paintwork. - Sold for £300 Lot 431 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway mounted coat of arms transfer, featuring the twin shields, roses and crown with a blue belted garter surround, overall 13"x17", presented on a black background. - Sold for £160 Lot 432 A Southern Railway enamel target sign "BLACKHEATH", from the South Eastern Railway's Lewisham to Dartford route. The station was on the Darlington to Penrith (Stainmore) route and the junction for the Middleton in Teesdale branch, it closed on 30th November 1964.(2) - Sold for £100 Lot 438 A BR(NE) tangerine enamel doorplate "WAITING ROOM", (f/f), with black edged lettering, excellent colour and shine, though chips around screw holes and at the right edge, a little careful restoration would pay dividends. - Sold for £180 Lot 439 A carriage print "EAST LINTON, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND, from a watercolour by John.E Aitken R.S.W". This ex LNWR shed was home to over 150 locos in the 1950s and in its final few months still maintained 70. Original paintwork and silvered back marked "47559". - Sold for £140 Lot 445 A smokebox numberplate "44476", from a LMS Class 4 (later 4F) 0-6-0 No 4476 built at St Rollox in 1928. A Peterborough (Spital Bridge) engine for most of its BR days, it later moved to Northampton, Kerntish Town, Derby, Wellingborough, Bedford and finally Nottingham from where it was withdrawn in May 1963 and cut up two months later at Derby Works. Completely unrestored, though there is a weld repair in the centre which is hardly noticeable. - Sold for £480 Lot 446 A Railway telephone indicator by "Gents" comprising of eight swinging indicators numbered 1-8 with a bell on top of the wooden case, overall 15"x11_". Also a wooden case exchange instrument with three rows of switches on a brass front plate, indicators include Sandy and Huntingdon, Barford Auto and Barrow Crossing, overall 14"x11" and 13_" deep, with a sloping front. The instruments were used at St Neots and are accompanied by a wiring diagram. (3) - Sold for £110 Lot 447 A Great Western Railway single line key token "FOUR CROSSES-POOL QUAY", from the Cambrian Railway's Oswestry to Welshpool route, the northern part of which closed between Buttington Junction and Oswestry on 18th January 1965. - Sold for £280 Lot 448 A waiting room print "The Welsh Coast from The Great Orme", by Norman Wilkinson, showing the sea with a train mountains beyond. The plate is 143/8"x2_" with engraved lettering with some red wax infill remaining, the right end is rounded, the left square, with the whole plate slightly tapered toward the rounded end - Sold for £130 Lot 462 A North Eastern Railway brass signal box shelf plate "NORTON WEST", engraved lettering, 8_"x1_", the front polished. The box was on the line to Stillington and Wellfield which left the Stockton to Hartlepool route at Norton. - Sold for £160 Lot 463 A shedplate "12C", Penrith (1935-October 1955), Workington until February 1958, Carlisle Canal until June 1963 and finally Barrow until December 1966 for steam, total closure in 1977). Ex LNWR Penrith housed 6 locos, ex LNWR Workington 30, ex NBR Carlisle Canal 40 including 4 elusive A3s and finally ex Furness Railway Barrow just 20 although some diesels allocated to this shed also carried the code. The lamp is complete with its fittings and has been repainted black. - Sold for £70 Lot 466 A large brass radiator plate "HUNSLET", 46"x8", with original red paintwork, as carried by a Class 05 diesel shunter. - Sold for £110 Lot 467 A Great Southern and Western Railway mounted coat of arms transfer, featuring a central shield of four segments and showing castles and ships with a belted garter surround. The shield is similar to that of the Great Southern Railway, though one segment is a castle rather than a ship and that below it differs in detail. The station was on the Durham and Sunderland line between Ryhope Grange Junction and South Hetton. - Sold for £130 Lot 473 A BR(W) quad royal poster "FISHGUARD-ROSSLARE, Shortest Sea Route to Southern Ireland", by John S Smith (PR 168/60), a busy scene of the Fishgaurd Harbour with two rakes of chocolate and cream coaches in the platforms and a prairie tank shunting vans, while steamers wait at the adjacent quay. Rolled with some edge wear mainly to border and a little border loss in places, at the top left a patch of loss which affects the very edge of the image (sky). The poster would look fine framed. - Sold for £220 Lot 474 A Great Northern Railway pegging block instrument with a trafolite plate "DOWN LINE" and handle with spring catch, at the rear a horizontal brass bar protrudes from the square door to link to another piece of equipment, excellent condition. - Sold for £95 Lot 475 A shedplate "2E", Northampton (March 1952-September 1963), then Saltley (September 1963-March 1967 when it closed to steam). The ex LNWR shed at Northampton was home to 40 locos during the period it used this code. The ex Midland shed at Saltley had an allocation of 50 locos in the mid 1960s. Always double track, this temporary section was introduced during prolonged engineering works in Bramhope Tunnel. - Sold for £85 Lot 478 A shedplate "84K", (Chester GWR 1949-February 1958, when it became 6E, then Wrexham Rhosddu February 1958-January 1960). Chester had an allocation of some 50 locos when it used this code including Castles and Halls. Wrexham Rhosddu had in 1959, a mixture of GWR, LMS and BR Standard classes. The plate refers to a box just south of Bury Bolton Street. - Sold for £130 Lot 495 A Railway Signal Company miniature train staff "BALLYCAR - LONG PAVEMENT", a section just north of Limerick on the way to Ennis, on the Waterford Limerick and Western Railway's route to Collooney, near Sligo. The section names on stamped copper plates soldered onto each side of the brass head. - Sold for £55 Lot 496 A pair of BR(E) dark blue signs from Bury St Edmunds station "PLATFORM 1" and "PLATFORM 2", each 24"x18" with left handed feathered arrows, excellent colour and shine, a couple of tiny face chips repaired on the "1" example and the usual flange edge chips on each. - Sold for £130 Lot 497 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway cast brass signalling instrument plate "SNYDALE WEST", from the company's Goole to Wakefield route.
