Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 17 January 2009

Lot 165 A locomotive nameplate "THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY", from the LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 No 3676 built at Darlington, Works No 1904, in January 1943, renumbered 964 in 1946, becoming BR 60964. It was ceremonially named at Durham Station on 29th April 1958 by the Colonel of the Regiment in the presence of local dignatories. The choice of 60964 for the naming was appropriate as the loco spent the whole of its working life at nearby Gateshead and Heaton. It was withdrawn from Gateshead in May 1964 and, after short periods in store there and at Swindon Works, it was cut up at the latter the following October. A magnificent example, the nameplate and "splasher" below being a one piece brass casting with the regimental badge fitted separately, the whole with the original BR chromium plating. Note: There is a photograph of the naming ceremony and a diagram showing the construction of the nameplate on page 138 of Frank Burridge's "Nameplates of the Big Four". Overall 65"x15_", the integral splasher repainted green with orange lining and the background to the lettering red, original chrome to the lettering, border and badge, the back also completely untouched.
 This lot sold for £20000
