Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 25 April 2009
| Lot 20 |
A cast iron notice "WYE VALLEY RAILWAY, CAUTION, TRESPASSERS ON ANY PART OF THIS RAILWAY ARE LIABLE TO A PENALTY OF TWO POUNDS". The Railway operated the short route between Chepstow and Monmouth and was absorbed into the Great Western in 1905. Passenger services ceased on 5th January 1959 and freight five years later, although the section south of Tintern was retained for quarry traffic until 1986. This is probably the rarest of all cast iron trespass notices, only one other example being known to exist. It measures 28 1/2"x20" with scalloped corners and a shaped border, is of a unique design and in completely original condition.
