Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 25 April 2009
| Lot 27 |
A locomotive worksplate "LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co No 2024, DONCASTER 1948", from the (LNER) Peppercorn A2 Class 4-6-2 No 60533 "Happy Knight", named after the winner of the 1946 2000 Guineas owned by Sir W Cooke. Always a Southern Section engine, it was allocated when built to New England in April 1948, soon moved to Copley Hill, but returned to New England where it spent about half its working life in several spells, but was also allocated, largely for only brief periods, to Grantham, Kings Cross and Doncaster. It was withdrawn from New England in June 1963 and cut up the following November at Doncaster Works. A fully engraved brass oval, 13 1/4"x7 3/4", in ex loco condition, unpolished with green paint on the rim, the back also untouched and stamped "533" in two places. The plate was acquired direct from the railway in the 1960s and has been in the possession of the vendor and his family ever since.
