Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 25 April 2009

Lot 75 A Midland Railway shed code plate "11" (Wigston, near Leicester). Opened by the Midland in 1873 as a substantial roundhouse, its allocation in 1920 amounted to 52 locos. It lost this code and became a sub-shed of Leicester (10) at the Grouping in 1923. By the time the LMS introduced the "numbers and letters" system in 1935, Wigston shed had just been closed. It remained intact and rail connected and when Leicester Midland (15C) was being rebuilt in 1944, Wigston was re-opened with full servicing facilities. When the rebuild was complete, the LMS continued to use these facilities and, although Wigston was never recognised as a sub-shed of Leicester in BR days, it continued in use until final closure came in April 1955! Cast iron oval, 5 1/4"x3", the number and rim repainted long ago, the rest in original condition.
 This lot sold for £380
