Great Central Railwayana Auctions

Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 25 April 2009

Lot 89 A locomotive nameplate "DUCHESS OF ATHOLL", from the LMS Class 7P (later 8P) "Princess Coronation" 4-6-2, LMS No 6231, BR No 46231, built at Crewe in June 1938 under Lot No 145 and one of five Duchesses built without streamlining and with a single chimney, later replaced by a double chimney which later members of the Class had from new. It was allocated new to Camden but in 1940 moved north of the border to Polmadie where it spent the remainder of its working life, eventually becoming one of the first three of the class to be withdrawn at the end of 1962. It was stored at Carstairs shed before being moved to Crewe Works for scrapping in November 1963. In early BR days No 46231 was painted in BR experimental blue livery with LNWR style lining but was repainted BR green in the early 1950s. It achieved considerable fame and affection when chosen by Hornby as the prototype for their model first produced in a boxed set in 1948. The model had first been advertised in 1939 when the engine was barely a year old but production was delayed as the Hornby factory stopped model production during the war. The plate is 75 1/2" long, the face repainted black while the edge retains much chrome plating, the back in totally original condition.
 This lot sold for £39000
