Lot 1 An LMS enamel lamp tablet, "FLEETWOOD", from the terminus of the branch from Poulton-le-Fylde which closed in 1966. Black on yellow, 16"x4 1/2", excellent condition other than a few edge chips. - Sold for £160 Lot 2 An LMS Steamers silver plated menu holder, by Elkington, comprising a weighted base and circular panel engraved with the company name in laurel leaf surround with an outer ring of laurel leaves in relief, overall 2" high, excellent condition. - Sold for £90 Lot 3 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "SHAP", (f/f), from the famous station close to the summit of the West Coast Main Line in Cumbria. Excellent colour and shine, three minor face chips all expertly restored. - Sold for £3300 Lot 4 A locomotive worksplate, "NASMYTH WILSON & Co LIMITED, No 1452 - 1925, PATRICROFT, MANCHESTER", from a LMS Class 3 (later 3P) 4-4-2T No 2124 built for the London, Tilbury & Southend line. It was allocated the new number 1942 by the LMS in 1947 but the loco was never renumbered, becoming BR 41942 the following year. It was withdrawn from Plaistow in 1956. Cast brass triangle, 13 3/4"x5 1/2", the front cleaned and repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £960 Lot 5 LMS "Coronation Scot" book matches, the cover featuring a painting of the world famous train by Bryan de Grineau, the back providing details of the train timings. The book is complete with 20 matches with yellow stems and blue phosphorous heads, each match bearing a single word forming the slogan, "CORONATION / SCOT / STREAMLINED / COMFORT / SPEED", repeated in this order four times utilising each match. A rare survivor. - Sold for £70 Lot 6 A Great Western Railway brass signal box plate listing the descriptions for levers 1 to 34, in three sections totalling 172". The descriptions include such wordings as "Refuge Siding, Backing North, Relief". The plate comes from the Cardiff area. - Sold for £280 Lot 7 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "RUABON", (f/f), from the Great Western Railway's Shrewsbury to Birkenhead Woodside main line and once junction for the cross country route to Barmouth. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £500 Lot 8 A Duffield Bank Railway wagonplate, "DBR, 15, 1898, LOAD 1 TON", rectangular, 5 3/4"x2 1/2", the front repainted long ago, the back in original condition. This 15" gauge railway, built in the grounds of Sir Athur Hayward's home in Derbyshire, was opened in 1874. Sir Arthur died in 1916 and the railway closed and was dismantled a short while later. - Sold for £440 Lot 9 A BR(M) maroon enamel station direction sign, "BRITISH RAILWAYS (in totem) STATION", with feathered arrow, double sided, 21"x11", excellent colour and shine and complete with mounting bracket. - Sold for £320 Lot 10 An early road sign, "DOUBLE BEND". An unusual large example in cast aluminium, 17"x30", with ten glass reflectors, in original condition. - Sold for £100 Lot 11 A Highland Railway Hotels white china 2 1/2" egg cup, with the company's full coat of arms on the side in green. - Sold for £200 Lot 12 A single line key token, "DERRY ORMOND - PONT LLANIO", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Aberystwyth to Carmarthen route which closed in 1964 although the section from Pont Llanio southward was retained for milk traffic until 1970. - Sold for £360 Lot 13 A Caledonian Railway three aspect handlamp, complete with internal fittings and glasses, the body stamped "10871" and bearing an oval embossed brass plate "BULPITT & SONS LTD BIRMINGHAM 1921", the top bears a stamped brass plate "CALEDONIAN". The lamp is in fine original condition. - Sold for £240 Lot 14 A North Eastern Railway silver plated salt spoon, by Elkington, the handle engraved "NER, ROYAL STATION HOTEL HULL" in a belted garter, excellent condition. - Sold for £80 Lot 15 A signal box nameboard, "LANCASTER No 3", from the London and North Western Railway's West Coast Main Line. Cast letters on wood with beading, 72 1/2"x10 1/2", the front repainted white on black. - Sold for £180 Lot 16 An LMS sepia carriage print, "FESTINIOG TOY RAILWAY, NORTH WALES", a superb view of a train entering an immaculately kept station hauling six ancient coaches. - Sold for £320 Lot 17 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "KENTS BANK", (f/f), from the Furness Railway's Carnforth to Barrow route, the station situated on the northern shores of Morecambe Bay. Good colour though a little loss of shine. - Sold for £660 Lot 18 A BR(Sc) light blue enamel running in board, "THURSO", (f/f), from the terminus of the Highland Railway's far north line from Inverness and Great Britain's most northerly station. 96"x24", some loss of shine and a few face chips. - Sold for £1700 Lot 19 An enamel trespass notice, "SLIGO LEITRIM AND NORTHERN COUNTIES Ry Co, - NOTICE -, ANY PERSON FOUND TRESPASSING ON THIS RAILWAY OR OTHER PREMISES THE PROPERTY OF THIS COMPANY WILL BE PROSECUTED ACCORDING TO THE LAW. BY ORDER R.E. DAVIS, SECRETARY", white lettering and border on black, 16"x12", four small face chips, otherwise excellent. The company's line ran from Enniskillen to Collooney near Sligo. A very rare example. - Sold for £500 Lot 20 An LMS Steamers silver plated one pint tea pot, by Elkington, the company name displayed on the side within a laurel leaf surround, excellent condition with an attractive finialed lid. - Sold for £80 Lot 21 A Highland Railway mounted coat of arms transfer. A striking design with twin shields, featuring the crucifixion, a lamb with Scottish standard and eagle and green belted garter. 12"x14", presented on a polished wooden board. - Sold for £80 Lot 22 A BR(NE) totem cap badge, "GUARD", tangerine enamel/chrome, complete with fixings, pin and maker's name "J.R. Gaunt, London". - Sold for £90 Lot 23 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY WEST", (f/f), from the Highland Railway's Aviemore to Forres route, via Dava Summit, which closed in 1965. Excellent colour and shine, one small chip repair at the edge of the top panel. - Sold for £2100 Lot 24 An LMS "Hawkseye" target sign, "BROMSGROVE". The station is situated at the foot of the Lickey Incline on the Midland Railway's Bristol to Birmingham main line. The sign is in original condition, with chocolate and cream paintwork applied by the Western Region after nationalisation. It is 48" long. - Sold for £1850 Lot 25 A Metropolitan Railway carriage door, from a "T Stock" electric set. The door is 22"x72 1/2", with curved top, original brown paintwork and brass bar on the outside. It is complete with its "Live in Metroland" brass door lock, the car number "6706" and leather strap. A rare survivor. - Sold for £560 Lot 26 An enamel advertising sign, "FRYS CHOCOLATE", featuring the five boys with changing expressions, "Desperation, Pacification, Expectation, Acclamation, Realisation its Frys". A few neat repairs and a vertical mark on the right-hand boy, 30"x22", minor corner loss lower left screw hole, a lovely example of this famous sign. - Sold for £820 Lot 27 A cast iron notice, "STRATFORD-UPON-AVON AND MIDLAND JUNCTION RAILWAY, MOTOR CAR ACTS, 1896 AND 1903, ...", outlining the restrictions for vehicles of certain axle weights. Rectangular, 16 1/4"x11 1/2", with scalloped corners. The front of the sign has been repainted. (These examples were mounted using steel clips driven into the masonry on the parapet of the bridge). - Sold for £330 Lot 28 A BR(M) maroon enamel doorplate, "ENQUIRIES", (f/f), excellent condition other than one small chip repair at the right-hand end and a few surface marks. - Sold for £210 Lot 29 A BR(S) signal box diagram, "MARCHWOOD", 1971, showing the lines towards Totten and Frost Lane Crossing. It includes the station platform (closed 1966), the loop, reception siding and auxiliary token instrument with crossings at Trots Lane, Tavells Lane, Pumpfield Farm, Veals Lane and West Street. A multicoloured example from the box, 52"x18", rolled. - Sold for £300 Lot 30 A shedplate "87H" Neyland (1949 - September 1963), then Whitland until December 1963. The ex GWR shed at Neyland had an allocation of 45 locos which at one time included 4 Counties, 4 Halls and a solitary Manor. On closure, sub shed Whitland used the code for its allocation of 15 locos until it too closed just three months later! The front of the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £160 Lot 31 A smokebox numberplate, "42613", from an LMS Class 4P (later 4) 2-6-4T No 2613 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24369, in 1937. A long-time Tebay loco and Shap banker, it later moved to Carnforth and Birkenhead from where it was withdrawn in April 1967. After six months in store at Birkenhead, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge the following October. The plate is in fine ex loco condition with maroon paintwork. - Sold for £540 Lot 32 A single line key token "PENMAENPOOL - DOLGELLY", (engraved metal plates/steel), from the western end of the Great Western Railway's Ruabon to Barmouth route. This section closed in 1964. - Sold for £320 Lot 33 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign, "RADCLIFFE ON TRENT", (h/f), from the Great Northern Railway's Nottingham to Grantham route. A rare example, not previously offered at auction. Good colour and shine, a little mottling, one tiny chip to the right of the word "ON". - Sold for £1600 Lot 34 A wagonplate, "SPOONER & Co, No 99 PORTMADOC", cast iron oval, 7 1/2"x4 3/4", with centre fixings, the front repainted long ago, the back in original condition. - Sold for £540 Lot 35 A Great Western Railway brass cabside numberplate, "6306", from a GWR 43XX Class 2-6-0 built at Swindon in December 1920 and allocated new to Neyland. It had moved to Worcester by the end of its GWR days and had spells later at St Philip's Marsh, Neyland and Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn in November 1961 and cut up at Swindon Works the following month. The front of the plate has been repainted, the back is in original condition; the beading stamped "ENGINE CLASS, 2-6-0 K.M., BOILER CLASS D.G.". - Sold for £1050 Lot 36 A locomotive worksplate, "LMS, BUILT 1943, GWR", from an (LMS) Class 7F (later 8F) 2-8-0 built by the GWR at Swindon to Railway Executive Committee order. Those built in 1943 were Nos 8400-26 which became BR 48400-26. All were loaned new to the GWR but transferred in 1946-7 to the LMS who allocated them to sheds across their system. Cast brass oval, 10 1/4"x6", the front repainted, the back untouched. - Sold for £250 Lot 37 An LMS Hotels small white china milk jug, the company name on the side in gilt lettering with laurel surround and similar decoration to the rim. - Sold for £55 Lot 38 A Midland Railway whistle, clearly engraved "THE METROPOLITAN PATENT, MIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANY, J HUDSON & Co, 13 BARR ST BIRMINGHAM", nickel, 3 1/4" long, of barrel shape construction with ring, chain and clip. - Sold for £65 Lot 39 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway cast brass signal instrument plate, "LOW MOOR, No 2 WEST", a box situated near Bradford. The plate is 5 1/2"x5/8". - Sold for £130 Lot 40 A BR(S) light green totem sign, "FALCONWOOD", (f/f), from the station on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway's Blackheath to Dartford route. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £640 Lot 41 A shedplate "89D" Oswestry (September 1960 - September 1963). During the time this ex Cambrian Railways shed used this code it had an allocation of around 40 locos. Formerly 89A, Oswestry came under the LMR in September 1963 when it became 6E; a code it used for just three months prior to closure in January 1964. The plate is in fine ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £140 Lot 42 A Metropolitan Railway enamel cab destination plate "RICKMANSWORTH / WATFORD", an early black on white enamel example with repeats "WF-RK" at each end, 32 3/4"x4", a little edge and face chipping from normal use. - Sold for £140 Lot 43 A Great Northern Railway bronze hand bell, with the company initials engraved on the side in serif lettering, 6 3/4" diameter base. The bell is complete with its clapper and ebonised wooden handle the top of which has some restoration. - Sold for £270 Lot 44 An early road sign, "SPEED LIMIT 30 MPH", embossed aluminium, 12"x21", in original condition with the maker's name "Hills, Staines, London" at the base. - Sold for £140 Lot 45 An LMS station direction sign, "LMS STATION EUSTON", black on yellow, 24 3/4"x9 1/2", double sided, poor condition with loss of shine and surface wear, but nevertheless a very rare example. An attempt at restoration has been made to one side of the plate. - Sold for £170 Lot 46 A locomotive worksplate, "NEILSON REID & Co GLASGOW 1900, HYDE PARK LOCOMOTIVE WORKS No 5699", from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway "C" Class 0-6-0 No 693 built in July 1900 and allocated new to Bricklayers Arms. At the Grouping it was renumbered A693, later becoming 1693 and BR 31693. In BR days it was shedded at Gillingham and Hither Green before returning to its first shed, Bricklayers Arms from where it was withdrawn in June 1961 to be cut up at Ashford Works the same month. Cast brass oval, 9"x6 3/4". The plate is from the collection of W.A.B. Jones, headmaster of Hadleigh School, Suffolk. As with other plates in the collection, it is distinctively repainted on the face only and is accompanied by photographs, descriptive notes and BR paperwork. - Sold for £720 Lot 47 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "ULVERSTON", (f/f), from the Furness Railway's Carnforth to Barrow route, once the junction for the Lakeside, Windermere branch. Excellent colour and shine, two minor blemishes only. - Sold for £680 Lot 48 A single line key token, "COMMON BRANCH JCT - TONTEG", (alloy), from the Taff Vale Railway's Llantrisant to Treforest route which closed in 1963. - Sold for £75 Lot 49 A Great Southern Railway double royal poster, "ALL IRELAND SENIOR AND MINOR FOOTBALL FINALS, KERRY V GALWAY AND MAYO V LOUTH, AT CROKE PARK DUBLIN 22ND SEPTEMBER 1940", a special excursion from Wexford to Arklow stations. Black on white, folded. - Sold for £80 Lot 50 An LMS 11" silver plated oval serving dish with domed lid and detachable handle, by Walker and Hall, the side of the lid is marked with the full company name and coat of arms, while the dish has a similar marking on the base, excellent condition. - Sold for £170 Lot 51 A Great Central Railway 12" roundhead clock with a chain driven fusee movement. The original dial is marked "LNER, 8024", though earlier ghost lettering is visible which reads "ARNOT AND SONS, No 485, MANCHESTER". The clock is in fine original condition and complete with pendulum and key. It was used in Ashton-Under-Lyme signal box and acquired by the railway historian James Boyd. - Sold for £580 Lot 52 A locomotive nameplate, "DUKE OF SUTHERLAND", from the LMS Class 5XP (later 6P & 7P) "Patriot" 4-6-0 No 5903 built at Crewe in 1933. It was renumbered 5541 in 1934, becoming BR 45541. A long time Carlisle Upperby loco, it later moved to Rugby and Nuneaton from where it was withdrawn in May 1962. After nine months in store at Rugby, it was cut up at Crewe Works in September 1962. The loco was named after the 4th Duke who died in 1913, having been a Director of the LNWR for 38 years. Cast brass, 48 1/2" long, the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £10000 Lot 53 A Great Western Railway double line level crossing indicator, with a small bell mounted on the top of the case. Excellent original condition, other than a bit of wear to the back of the case and a strip of veneer missing at the base. - Sold for £200 Lot 54 A Southern Railway enamel target sign, "BROADSTONE". The station was situated at the southern end of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Line, it was the junction for Wimborne and Salisbury and closed in 1966. Excellent colour and shine, with the usual edge chips filled and neatly colour matched. - Sold for £520 Lot 55 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "TAIN", (f/f), from the Highland Railway's far north route to Wick and Thurso. Good colour though some loss of shine. - Sold for £620 Lot 56 A set of cast iron letters, "WEST LONDON JUNCTION", from the overhead signal box just east of Clapham Junction station. The letters are 7 1/4" high. - Sold for £110 Lot 57 A carriage print, "NEVIN, CAERNARVONSHIRE", by Ellis Silas, a view of boats around the jetty with cottages and cliffs beyond. The print is from the LMR (A) Series. - Sold for £50 Lot 58 A North British Railway mounted coat of arms transfer. A distinctive example featuring twin shields, roses and thistles. It is presented on a polished wooden board, 14 1/4"x16". - Sold for £80 Lot 59 An early three aspect handlamp from the Timoleague and Courtmacsherry Railway which ran from Ballinascarthy on the Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway's Clonakilty branch. The lamp is complete with its interior fittings but lacks the red glass, one of the side catches bears a large brass plate "TIMOLEAGUE, 3". It has a copper bezel and piecrust top, the front glass is cracked, though this could easily be replaced. - Sold for £440 Lot 60 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "DIDCOT", (f/f), from the Great Western Railway's main line to Bristol and South Wales, the junction for Oxford. Excellent colour and shine, minor chips on the "O" and "T", a couple of insignificant blemishes. - Sold for £600 Lot 61 A London Transport wooden headboard carried on the front on the Royal Train to Heathrow Central on the occasion of the opening of the Piccadilly Line extension. "UNDERGROUND TO HEATHROW - 16TH DECEMBER 1977", featuring a pictogram combining the LT target with an aeroplane, 15 3/4"x15", silver on dark blue, the date on a separate band 15 3/4"x3 1/2". - Sold for £460 Lot 62 A shedplate "85A" Worcester (1949 - December 1965). This ex GWR shed was home to 80 locos in the 1950s, including Bulldogs, Stars, Castles, Halls and Granges. Even in its final year it hosted 6 Halls and 5 Granges in a total of 24 locos. The front of the plate may have been repainted long ago. - Sold for £280 Lot 63 A brass wall plate, "NORWICH UNION, FIRE, INSURANCE SOCIETY, ESTABLISHED 1797 - GEORGE BUNYON, AGENT". A superb hand-engraved example, 16"x21". - Sold for £130 Lot 64 A BR(NE) tangerine enamel station direction sign, "BRITISH RAILWAYS (in totem) STATION", with arrow, 21"x11", excellent colour and shine. This example pointed to Ormsby station on the Middlesborough by Battersby line. - Sold for £320 Lot 65 A London and South Western Railway cast iron occupation crossing notice, with full company title and signed by Godfrey Knight. 25 3/4"x19", the front neatly restored in white on a red background. - Sold for £100 Lot 66 A Tyers single line tablet, "GUNNISLAKE - CALLINGTON", (brass), from the Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway's branch line from Bere Alston. This section west of Gunnislake closed in 1966. - Sold for £400 Lot 67 A single line key token, "PENYBONT - LLANBISTER ROAD", (alloy), from the London and North Western Railway's Central Wales line, one of the more remote sections situated to the west of Knighton. - Sold for £210 Lot 68 A GWR and LMS Joint quad royal poster, "THE SEVERN, AVON AND WYE VALLEYS", by Sayer. A fine poster map with vignettes covering the area Newport, Whitney-on-the-Wye, Wantage and Warwick with rail routes including the Golden Valley Line, Stratford and Midland Junction, etc. Rolled, with a couple of minor edge nicks, excellent condition. - Sold for £220 Lot 69 An early cast aluminium road sign, "CROSSING NO GATES", depicting an 0-6-0 steam locomotive, 12"x21", complete with 67 glass reflectors, the maker's name "Franco Traffic Signs" at the base. - Sold for £420 Lot 70 A Midland Railway power classification plate, "2". The MR had very many Class 2 locos and it is impossible to trace from which Class this plate originates. These plates were fitted high up on the loco cabsides. Cast brass, serif style, 2 1/2"x2", complete with both rear fixings. - Sold for £50 Lot 71 An early cast iron road sign triangle, with original white paintwork and twelve large and bulbous red glass reflectors, one with the top chipped off, the maker's name "24 Hour Signs" shown on the front. - Sold for £170 Lot 72 An North Eastern Railway enamel doorplate, "PORTER'S ROOM", reddish brown lettering and border on cream, a little edge chipping at the top and base centre, otherwise excellent. - Sold for £140 Lot 73 A BR(M) maroon enamel sign, "PLEASE SHOW TICKETS", (f/f), exceptionally good condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 74 A BR(NE) small poster timetable for train services between Berwick and Kelso, September 10th 1951 until further notice. Blue on white, with a totem at the top, all stations listed, together with the timings for the four daily services in each direction. The line closed in 1965. 13 3/4"x21 1/2 ", framed. - Sold for £90 Lot 75 A ground frame notice, "AVENUE SIDINGS S.F.", from the Midland Railway's main line between Clay Cross and Chesterfield. Cast letters on wood, 59"x6", with chamfered edges. - Sold for £40 Lot 76 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway guard's whistle, the top neatly engraved "L&YR Co, Registered", brass, with open section by the mouthpiece and complete with chain with an LMS button at the end. - Sold for £110 Lot 77 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "DERBY MIDLAND", (h/f), a famous location, headquarters of the Midland Railway. Excellent colour and shine, three small face chips repainted and a few surface marks. - Sold for £600 Lot 78 A diesel locomotive worksplate, "THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO LTD, VULCAN WORKS, NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS, ENGLAND, No D1246, 1968" from a standard gauge 500hp 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic which went new to British Steel, Strip Products Division at Llanwern Works, Newport and was noted out of use there in 1998 and presumed scrapped on site subsequently. Chromed brass rectangle, 10 1/4"x4 3/4", in ex loco condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 79 An LMS blue enamel trespass notice, "LONDON MIDLAND & SCOTTISH RAILWAY COMPANY, WARNING, PERSONS ARE WARNED NOT TO TRESPASS UPON THE COMPANY'S RAILWAY OR OTHER PROPERTY. ANY PERSON FOUND SO DOING WILL BE PROSECUTED. BY ORDER." The sign is 18"x22" and contained in an original wooden frame, it has minor edge and screw hole chipping only. A rare example, the colour probably deriving from signs of the former Caledonian Railway. - Sold for £240 Lot 80 A cast brass plate, "IMPROVED DRAUGHTING, 7025", from the (GWR) "Castle" Class 4-6-0 "Sudeley Castle" built at Swindon in August 1949. It was allocated new to Old Oak Common and withdrawn from Worcester in September 1964. 33/8"x23/8", the number stamped, the plate has been lightly cleaned. - Sold for £380 Lot 81 An original gouache painting by the renowned carriage print artist Richard Ward, featuring LMS 46238 "City of Carlisle". This is the original artwork for the Brooke Bond tea picture card series, it is mounted and framed, overall 11"x9 1/2". - Sold for £150 Lot 82 A BR(S) signal box diagram, "ROTHERFIELD", 1952, from the Eridge to Polegate "Cuckoo" line which closed in 1965. A coloured example from the box, 28"x24", some edge wear and a little loss to the lower left. - Sold for £190 Lot 83 A Great Western Railway one pint white china tea mug, the company initials shown below the rim in a diamond motif. - Sold for £50 Lot 84 A signal box shelf plate, "BEN RHYDDING", from the Otley and Ilkley Joint Line, 9"x11/8". - Sold for £40 Lot 85 A Great Southern and Western Railway salt glaze "landmine" inkwell, 4 1/2" diameter, the side clearly marked "GS&WR". This example came from Baltinglass signal box on the Sallins to Tullow branch, south east of Kildare. - Sold for £70 Lot 86 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway silver plated serving spoon and fork, each clearly marked with the company monogram on the handle, excellent condition. (2) - Sold for £90 Lot 87 A cast aluminium county boundary road sign, "HUNTINGDONSHIRE", incorporating the coat of arms above the county name and rear fixing brackets, 60"x25", unrestored, with original blue on white paintwork and the detail of the crest picked out in colour. - Sold for £65 Lot 88 A BR(S) light green totem sign, "MARDEN", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's Redhill to Ashford route, the station situated between Paddock Wood and Staplehurst. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £250 Lot 89 A GWR restaurant car steward's badge, "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, 348", black and white enamel on brass, 1 1/4" diameter, complete with rear fixings and pin. - Sold for £100 Lot 90 A locomotive worksplate, "MANNING WARDLE & Co, No 1362, LEEDS 1897", from the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway 2-6-2T "Exe" delivered new to Barnstaple in November 1897. When the L&B was taken over by the Southern Railway at the 1923 Grouping, "Exe" was numbered E760. The line closed at the end of the 1935 summer season and an auction of the various assets was held on 15th November 1935. The Railway's five locos realised a total of only £236 with "Exe" being the lowest priced at just £34. All except "Lew" were broken up a few days later at Pilton by J Cashmore Ltd. "Lew" was shipped to Brazil and worked on a coffee plantation before being reported as scrapped in February 1957. Engraved brass oval, 107/8"x6", the front polished, the back completely untouched. - Sold for £6300 Lot 91 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "PRESTONPANS", (f/f), from the Berwick upon Tweed to Edinburgh section of the East Coast Main line. It is presumed to have been scrapped as there is no record of it being preserved. Excellent colour and shine though slight discoloration to the white enamel. - Sold for £320 Lot 100 A GWR Photochrom carriage print, "NEWQUAY, BEACON COVE", featuring a colour view of the dramatic Cornish coastline and cliff-top hotel. - Sold for £50 Lot 101 A diesel locomotive depot plaque, "CARDIFF CANTON", featuring a Welsh mountain goat, 25"x25" diamond, the black background probably repainted, otherwise in original condition with brake dust deposits on the sides and oxidisation on the back. - Sold for £210 Lot 102 A Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway cast iron poster board header "L&L.S.R.", from the 3' gauge line which ran north from Derry to Buncrana, on the Inishowen peninsula. The plate is 21 1/2"x4", the front has been repainted. A very rare example from a minor Irish company. - Sold for £300 Lot 103 A smokebox numberplate, "42782", from an LMS Class 4 (later 5) "Crab" 2-6-0 No 13082 built at Crewe in 1927. It was renumbered 2782 in 1934, becoming BR 42782. Its BR sheds were Aston, Bescot, Crewe South, Rugby, Stoke, then north of the Border to Ayr for six months in 1963, and finally Birkenhead from where it was withdrawn in December 1966. After four months in store at Birkenhead, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh in April 1967. The plate is in ex loco condition. - Sold for £920 Lot 104 A single line key token "EGGESFORD - KINGS NYMPTON", (alloy), a picturesque mid Devon section on the London and South Western Railway's route to Ilfracombe. - Sold for £210 Lot 105 A Cavan, Leitrim and Roscommon Railway axle box cover inscribed, "C.L.&r.Ry", 6 3/4"x5" including side lugs. - Sold for £260 Lot 106 A locomotive nameplate, "KING GEORGE VI", from the LMS Class 7P (later 8P) "Princess Coronation" 4-6-2 No 6244 built at Crewe in 1940 and originally named "City of Leeds" but renamed the following year after the then reigning monarch, becoming BR 46244. A long time Carlisle Upperby loco, it finished its days at nearby Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in October 1964. After a couple of months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at West of Scotland Shipbreaking Co, Troon in the December. Cast brass, 76" long, with evidence of chrome plating remaining on the rims and two recesses in the rear of the plate to accommodate the stays securing the streamlined casing. The front of the plate is repainted red, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £39000 Lot 107 A Great Central Railway brass permanent way look out man's horn, 5" long, in working order, clearly stamped with the company's initials. - Sold for £95 Lot 108 A Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway cast milepost, "12", rectangular with V-shaped base, 10"x9 3/4". (MP CB 101/F) - Sold for £30 Lot 109 A small wooden carriage board, "CREWE / PRESTON", cream on maroon paintwork, 32"x31/8", as used on local stopping services on the West Coast Main Line. - Sold for £220 Lot 110 A German Railway notice, as attached to an LNER coach used on a British Service Train after the Second World War, "ACHTUNG, BEIM KUPPELN NICHT VOR STILLSTAND, DER FAHRZEUGE HINEINTRETEN. KUPPLERRAUM IST ZU KLEIN! LEBENSGEFAHR!", black and white lettering painted on steel, 13 1/2"x6 1/2". The plate is accompanied by some illustrations of the coaches showing the plates. - Sold for £110 Lot 111 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "HAYMARKET", (h/f), the first station out of Edinburgh Waverley on the North British Railway's route to Glasgow and Aberdeen. Reasonable colour though loss of shine, a few small edge chips filled and colour matched, the surface has been varnished. - Sold for £460 Lot 112 A single line key token, "ST DENNIS JCT - DRINNICK MILL", (alloy), with a small GWR pattern aluminium token holder with steel hoop. The key is from a section on the original Cornwall Minerals Railway's route to Burngullow on the Cornish main line. (Replacement key end). (2) - Sold for £290 Lot 113 A Great Central Railway Tyers Co-operative Permissive block instrument with a metal plate "DUCKMANTON EAST JCT", which refers to a box on the company's Staveley to Arkwright Town line. The instrument has a large dial numbered 1 to 6, commutator and an indicator below with brass surround. A fine example, the case and paintwork are in original condition. - Sold for £390 Lot 114 A BR(E) dark blue enamel sign, "GONERBY TUNNEL 560 YARDS", from the Great Northern Railway's Grantham to Nottingham route, the tunnel situated just west of Grantham. 48"x24", with minor face chips only. - Sold for £100 Lot 115 A shedplate "84A" Plymouth Laira (September 1963 - 1973). This alloy code was carried by Laira's allocation of diesel hydraulics. The plate has been lightly cleaned and the front repainted. - Sold for £130 Lot 116 A cast iron notice "LM & SR WARNING, STOP LOOK AND LISTEN, KEEP THIS GATE CLOSED UNTIL THE FARTHER GATE IS OPENED....", includes further instruction re closure and fines and contacting the station master about exceptional loads. The sign is 27"x20", the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £210 Lot 117 A Glasgow and South Western Railway mounted coat of arms transfer, with the full company name displayed on a red belted garter on a green background, overall 22 1/2"x16". A very old example, with a little wear in places, but nevertheless an example of the rarest of the main Scottish companies. - Sold for £100 Lot 118 A BR(S) dark green totem sign, "ROCHESTER", (f/f), from the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's Strood to Faversham route. Excellent colour and shine with the odd insignificant blemish. - Sold for £420 Lot 119 An LMS silver plated coffee service on a circular serving tray comprising a large three pint coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl, each marked with the full company name and coat of arms within a decorative leaf and scroll pattern, all by Walker and Hall. The LMS Hotels tray is 12" in diameter, manufactured by Elkington. A pair of LMS Hotels sugar tongs is included. All in excellent condition. (5) - Sold for £360 Lot 120 A wagon or coach plate, "EATON RAILWAY, 39, 1896", from the narrow gauge system at Eaton Hall in Cheshire. Cast iron oval, 6 1/4"x43/8", the plate has been cleaned and primered. This and other narrow gauge plates are from the collection of James Boyd, the narrow gauge railway historian. - Sold for £560 Lot 121 An enamel notice, "COUNTY BOROUGH OF SOUTHEND-ON-SEA, CLEANLINESS OF STREETS, PLEASE do not allow your DOGS to FOUL the Footpaths. The Deposit of PAPER or other LITTER in any Street or Public Place is PROHIBITED - PENALTY £5", green on white, 13"x8", double sided, minor edge chipping only, a couple of tiny face chips on one side. - Sold for £65 Lot 122 A Great Western Railway brass cabside numberplate, "GWR, 3017", from a "ROD" 2-8-0 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22124, in April 1919 at their Queens Park Works for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 2029. No longer required for the war effort, the loco was sold to the GWR in July 1919 and allocated to Neath and then Carmarthen. It finished its GWR days at St Philip's Marsh and was withdrawn from Tyseley in October 1956. The front of the plate has been repainted red, the back is in original condition; the beading clearly stamped "ENGINE CLASS, 2-8-0 G, BOILER CLASS, M.A.". - Sold for £3700 Lot 123 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway three aspect handlamp, complete with its interior fittings, glasses and bull's eye lens to the front. The body is stamped "BOLTON P 472" and the brass rear catch is stamped with the company initials. The lamp is in unrestored condition. - Sold for £270 Lot 124 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "PENRITH", (f/f), from the Lancaster and Carlisle section of the West Coast Main Line, once junction for Keswick and the Stainmore route. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £1050 Lot 125 A single line key token "PENRHYNDEUDRAETH - PORTMADOC", (alloy), from the northern part of the Cambrian Coast route, this section notable in being crossed on the level by the Festiniog Railway at Minffordd. The key is complete with its hinged GWR. pattern holder, for automatic exchange, aluminium with steel hoop and handle. (2) - Sold for £420 Lot 126 An enamel sign, "WESTMINSTER BANK", comprising a coloured shield within a brass frame featuring a portcullis and flowers, with a separate plate showing the name below, the whole contained in a rectangular wrought iron frame, double sided, 21"x30", complete with brass supporting bar and two steel supports for wall fixing. A splendid example. - Sold for £310 Lot 127 A smokebox numberplate, "3716", from a GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in January 1937 and allocated new to Ebbw Junction. It had moved to Cardiff Canton by the end of its GWR days and spent its final years at Aberdare from where it was withdrawn in December 963. After three months in store at its home shed, it was cut up at Wards, Briton Ferry in March 1964. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £350 Lot 128 An LMS, "GLENEAGLES HOTEL", cup and saucer, 2 1/2", by Cauldon, with black and gold rim decoration. (2) - Sold for £170 Lot 129 A Great Western Railway brass signal box shelf plate, "PANGBOURNE MAIN LINE", from the Reading to Didcot main line, engraved lettering, 4 3/4"x1 1/2", with much of the original wax infill. - Sold for £130 Lot 130 A locomotive worksplate, "DE WINTON & Co Ltd ENGINEERS 1893 CARNARVON". The only loco built by this Company in 1893 was a 2ft 6ins gauge 0-4-0 vertical boiler tank with outside cylinders named "Gelli" which worked at Pen-yr-Orsedd Slate Quarry at Nantlle. Engraved brass rectangle, 8"x5", the face polished though the lettering worn in places, the year has been stamped in the plate to the left of the original engraving, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £2100 Lot 131 A Festiniog Railway cast iron fire surround, formed from a section of the company's narrow gauge rail, 27 1/2" long, 9 1/2" deep. - Sold for £100 Lot 132 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "WREXHAM GENERAL", (f/f), from the Great Western Railway's Shrewsbury to Chester section of the main line to Birkenhead Woodside. Excellent colour and shine, a few minor surface marks. - Sold for £520 Lot 133 A Shedplate "74C" Dover (1948 - October 1958). This ex SR shed was home to 70 locos during the time it used this code; most notable classes shedded here were Schools and King Arthurs, along with Battle of Britain and Merchant Navy Pacifics. It was recoded 73H and finally closed in June 1961. The plate has been repainted long ago, the BR(S) Eastleigh triangle is cast on the back. - Sold for £500 Lot 134 A Metropolitan Railway cast iron doorplate, "SIGNAL DEPT.", with serif lettering, the plate is 15"x4" and in original condition. - Sold for £210 Lot 135 A framed notice, "FESTINIOG RAILWAY, On and from 1st October 1908, the issue of SECOND CLASS ORDINARY TICKETS on the Festiniog Railway will be discontinued and tickets available FIRST CLASS will be issued at existing second class fares, by order". The notice is contained in its original decorative wooden frame,16 1/4"x4 3/4". - Sold for £170 Lot 136 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, "BARNSTAPLE TOWN - POTTINGTON", (brass/steel), from a short section on the banks of the River Taw before the route again becomes double track en route to Ilfracombe. - Sold for £250 Lot 137 A Festiniog and Blaeneau and Festiniog Railway signal box diagram, "F&B&F RYS, BLAENEAU YARD AND DUFFWS JUNCTION", showing the narrow gauge mineral and main passenger lines to Portmadoc and the Festiniog and Blaeneau Railway (later GWR) towards Festiniog station. A superb and early diagram inscribed "McKenzie and Holland, Railway Signal Engineers, Worcester, November 28th 1883" and notably including a flat crossing between standard and narrow gauge. The diagram is 30"x13 1/2" and is presented in a smart modern frame. - Sold for £820 Lot 138 A single line key token, "DRWS-Y-NANT - GARNEDDWEN", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Ruabon to Barmouth route, an isolated and picturesque section situated south west of Bala Junction. The line closed in 1965. - Sold for £480 Lot 139 A Caledonian Railway signal post finial, of the skeletal ball pattern. This example is complete with its four feet, is 30" high and is repainted white. - Sold for £100 Lot 140 An LNER cast iron seat back plate, "MANEA", from the Great Eastern Railway's March to Ely route. 22" long, with original white on blue paintwork. - Sold for £640 Lot 141 A BR(S) fishtail cap badge, "TICKET COLLECTOR", green enamel/brass, 4 1/4" long. The badge is complete with its rear fixings and the maker's name "J.R. Gaunt, London". - Sold for £120 Lot 142 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign, "HUNSTANTON", (h/f), the seaside terminus of the Great Eastern Railway's branch from Kings Lynn which closed in 1969. Excellent colour though some loss of shine, several chips filled and repainted, the lettering largely unaffected. - Sold for £980 Lot 143 A locomotive worksplate, "No 4627, 1935, THE VULCAN FOUNDRY (LIMITED), NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS, LANCASHIRE", from an LMS Class 5P5F (later 5) 4-6-0 No 5084 which became BR 45084. In BR days its sheds were Carlisle Kingmoor, Stirling for many years, Corkerhill and Carstairs from where it was withdrawn in November 1966. After five months in store at Carstairs, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw in April 1967. Cast brass oval, 9"x5 1/4", the front cleaned and painted maroon, the back untouched. - Sold for £400 Lot 144 An LMS Steamers silver plated scallop dish, by Elkington, the handle marked with the company name within a laurel leaf surround, the 5" bowl constructed in the shape of a sea shell, excellent condition. - Sold for £90 Lot 145 A Cheshire Lines Committee platform lamp interior, comprising square vessel bearing a superb brass plate, "CHESHIRE LINES, ALTCAR & HILLHOUSE", brass burner (non-matching) and glass chimney. The station was on the Southport Lord Street branch and closed in 1952. - Sold for £210 Lot 146 A diesel locomotive nameplate, "THE ENGINEMEN'S FUND", with badge, from a Brush Type 2 A1A-A1A Class 31 diesel 31568. Originally numbered D5855 delivered new to 41A Tinsley as Brush works number 391 in August 1962, renumbered 31321 in December 1974, 31468 in April 1985, and finally 31568 in September 1990. The loco was named at Bescot Open Day on 6th May 1990, and the plates were removed in October 1997. Ex loco condition, the nameplate is 81"x10", the oval badge is 12 1/2"x8" and features an early steam locomotive with the wording "ENGINEMEN'S ASSURANCE, 12TH ANNIVERSARY, 1865-1990". The lot is accompanied by a Lima "00" boxed model of the locomotive, a programme for the naming ceremony at Bescot and an enamel badge produced by the fund. (5) - Sold for £2200 Lot 147 A Furness Railways cast iron trespass notice referring to the company's 1894 act, 26"x19 1/4", the front possibly repainted long ago. - Sold for £160 Lot 148 A wooden fingerboard, "LOUGHBORO', BARROW-ON-SOUR, SILEBY, SYSTON, HUMBERSTONE RD, LEICESTER", 48"x6 1/2", with original yellow on maroon paintwork and steel bracket. This example was probably used at Trent, alternatively Derby or Nottingham. - Sold for £440 Lot 149 A North Eastern Railway tea cup, with blue rim and full multicoloured coat of arms, the "NER HOTELS DEPT" scroll beneath, produced by Bowns of Staffordshire. - Sold for £30 Lot 150 A bronze platform lamp from Rickmansworth station on the Metropolitan and Great Central Joint line. The lamp is 31" high, 30" across and comprises a circular stand with post fitting and 18" bronze shade for an electric bulb. A distinctive Art Deco style lamp, in excellent original condition. - Sold for £270 Lot 151 A BR(S) dark green totem sign, "CHARING CROSS", (f/f), from the famous London terminus on the north bank of the river Thames. Engraved brass oval, 11 1/4"x8 1/4", the face polished but showing the usual markings, the back in original condition. - Sold for £920 Lot 155 An enamel advertising sign, "GUINNESS IS GOOD FOR YOU", featuring a pint glass of the world famous stout, multicoloured, 27 1/2"x18 3/4", one face chip neatly repainted, affecting the final word, otherwise just the usual edge and screw hole chips. - Sold for £210 Lot 156 A small wooden carriage board, "CHANNEL ISLANDS PASSENGERS / PADDINGTON", cream on maroon paintwork, 32"x3 1/4", as used on the boat trains to Weymouth Quay connecting with steamers to Guernsey and Jersey. - Sold for £90 Lot 157 A single line key token, "LLANYMYNECH - FOUR CROSSES", (engraved metal plates/steel), from the Cambrian Railway's Oswestry to Buttington Junction route which closed in 1965. (2) - Sold for £420 Lot 158 A carriage print, "OLD BRIDGE OF DEE, NEAR BRAEMAR, ABERDEENSHIRE", by Kenneth Steel, a detailed view of the ancient structure with mountains rising dramatically beyond (one of the longer style prints, designed to fit LMS frames). - Sold for £180 Lot 159 A British Railways Lion, Wheel, Crown mounted coat of arms transfer, small pattern, presented on a black metal plate, overall 39"x15". - Sold for £260 Lot 160 A locomotive worksplate, "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COY LTD, 1942, No 24775, HYDE PARK WORKS, GLASGOW", from an LMS Class 7F (later 8F) 2-8-0 No 8197, which became BR 48197. A long-time Toton loco, it finished its days at Westhouses, Buxton and Heaton Mersey from where it was withdrawn in April 1968. After four months in store at Heaton Mersey, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following August. 7 3/4" diameter, the front of the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £250 Lot 161 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "TEBAY", (f/f), from the Lancaster and Carlisle section of the West Coast Main Line, the station and nearby sheds were situated at the north end of the Lune Gorge at the start of the gruelling climb to Shap Summit. Good colour though some loss of shine and mottling. - Sold for £2300 Lot 162 A German Railway smokebox numberplate, "58 1968", from a standard gauge 2-10-0 built by Linke-Hofmann-Werke, Breslau, works No 2040, in 1920. It was withdrawn in November 1970. 27 1/2"x8", aluminium numbers on steel backplate, in ex loco condition. - Sold for £170 Lot 163 A Glasgow and South Western Railway signal box route indicator, with a suspended needle showing "Main, Goods, or Canal Line". A little wear to the paintwork on the face and lettering, 6 1/4" diameter, with a brass plate to the left "CART JUNCT SLOW LINE" on the cast brass surround. The instrument originates from the Paisley area. - Sold for £120 Lot 164 A pair of London and North Western Railway signal lever description plates "FROM UP BLACKPOOL FAST" and "TO LIVERPOOL ROAD", each 5 1/2"x3 3/4", cast iron, with original paintwork. (2) - Sold for £90 Lot 165 An London and North Eastern Railway cast iron doorplate, "TRANSHIP SHED", from Mablethorpe station in East Lincolnshire, the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £130 Lot 166 A Tyers single line tablet, "WILLOUGHBY - SUTTON-ON-SEA", (brass), from the Great Northern Railway's Mablethorpe branch which, along with the East Lincolnshire line, closed in 1970. Unusually, the tablet has a groove in the back and is inscribed "This side up to release switch box". - Sold for £200 Lot 167 A Caledonian Railway carving fork with silver plated ribbed handle bearing the company name and coat of arms, steel tines and guard, excellent condition. - Sold for £110 Lot 168 A BR(S) dark green enamel signal box nameboard, "BARNSTAPLE JUNCTION", (f/f), from the London and South Western Railway's route from Exeter, the junction for the Torrington and Ilfracombe routes. 120"x12", in two sections of 57" and 63", excellent colour and shine, just a small blemish in one place and a few minor flange chips. - Sold for £420 Lot 169 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "MONTROSE", (f/f), from the North British Railway's Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line. Excellent colour and shine, two tiny edge chips. - Sold for £640 Lot 170 A locomotive nameplate, "BOSWELL", from the (LNER) A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60138 built at Darlington, Works No 2057, in December 1948 and named in September 1950 after the winner of the 1936 St Leger, owned by Mr W Woodward. It was allocated new to York and spent all its working life there until withdrawal in October 1965. After a couple of months in store at its home shed, it was cut up at Wards, Killamarsh in the December. The route closed in 1985. - Sold for £130 Lot 172 An LMS fully titled cast iron trespass notice dated "1st August 1924", 26"x19 1/2" (TPLM 201). - Sold for £190 Lot 173 A signal box nameboard, "PITSFORD", from the London and North Western Railway's Northampton to Market Harborough route which closed to passengers in 1960 but remained open for freight until 1984. Cast letters on wood with beading, 43"x10 1/2". - Sold for £420 Lot 174 A smokebox numberplate, "48495", from a LMS Class 7F (later 8F) 2-8-0 No 8495 built at Horwich in 1945. Its BR sheds were Westhouses, Cricklewood, Wellingborough, Hasland, Bolton and finally Buxton from where it was withdrawn in October 1967. After six months in store at Buxton, it was cut up at Buttigiegs, Newport in April 1968. The plate has been repainted long ago. - Sold for £410 Lot 175 A North Eastern Railway 12" dial dropcase clock with fusee movement and pendulum window. The original face is marked "BR, (NE), 1904". The prototype was a Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Class 27 3F 0-6-0 built at Horwich in 1894, which became LMS 12237, BR 52237 and was withdrawn in 1959. - Sold for £460 Lot 178 An original oil painting by Eric Bottomley, featuring an Isle of Man Railway train, probably leaving Douglas. It is complete with its interior fittings and glasses, the dome-shaped vessel stamped "LMS AWW". The lamp has been cleaned and repainted to a high standard. - Sold for £160 Lot 183 A small Festiniog Railway carriage board, "PORTMADOC / BL. FESTINIOG", black on white paintwork with light brown shading to the lettering, 17 1/2"x3", a rare survivor in fine original condition. - Sold for £620 Lot 184 A diesel locomotive worksplate, "ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & CO LTD, KILMARNOCK, CALEDONIA WORKS, LWDMU, 698, 1985", from coach No 55681 of Class 143 diesel multiple unit No 143615. The DMU was scrapped at Cardiff Canton following a fire which gutted the entire unit. Cast aluminium oval, 97/8"x7 1/4", completely original condition, the BR blue paintwork caked in brake dust. This is probably the final type of cast worksplate to be produced by any builder in this country. - Sold for £270 Lot 185 A locomotive worksplate, "ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS Ltd, 7533, 1950", from the (LNER) L1 Class 2-6-4T No 67799, the penultimate member of the Class built in September 1950. It was allocated new to Kings Cross but later moved to Colwick from where it was withdrawn in March 1962 and was cut up at Darlington Works the following month. Engraved brass hexagon, 11 1/4"x5 1/2", the face polished, the back lightly cleaned and the loco number noted. - Sold for £820 Lot 186 A BR(S) signal box diagram, "BROCKENHURST, A", 1968, showing the lines towards Christchurch and Totten. It includes Ashurst Crossing, Lyndhurst Road, Beaulieu Road, Woodfidley Crossing, Whitley Crossing, Lymington Junction and the Pier branch, of note is the luggage platform electrical release. A multicoloured example from the box, 60"x20", rolled. - Sold for £160 Lot 187 A smokebox numberplate, "69698", from a (Great Eastern Railway Class L77), LNER N7 Class, 0-6-2T No 2658 built by Beardmore & Co, Works No 321, in September 1927. It was renumbered 9698 in 1946, becoming BR 69698. In BR days it saw service at a wide range of sheds: Neasden, Kings Cross, Norwich, Yarmouth South Town, Tilbury, Kings Lynn, Hatfield, Kings Cross again and finally Stratford from where it was withdrawn in September 1961 to be cut up at the nearby Works the following month. The front of the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £560 Lot 188 A single line key token, "TONDU - GELLI LAS", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Llynvi and Ogmore line north of Bridgend. - Sold for £105 Lot 189 A BR(S) light green totem sign, "READING SOUTHERN", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's terminus station which closed in 1965 when trains were diverted into a new electrified platform at the east end of Reading General station. Excellent colour and shine, though edge chips into the green in several places. - Sold for £900 Lot 190 A hanging card advertisement, "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE ET NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS, SERVICE RAPIDE ENTRE LE CONTINENT ET L'ANGLETERRE, VOIE DE ZEBRUGGE ET HULL", by "Duke of Cornwall", (May 1914). The card is 10"x14" and features the LY&NE flags, a photograph of the steamer and times from Brussels, Gent, Bruges, etc. to Hull, excellent condition. - Sold for £80 Lot 191 A ground frame notice, "SNEINTON CROSSING S.F.", from the Midland Railway's Nottingham to Newark route. Cast letters on wood, 63"x6", with chamfered edges. - Sold for £80 Lot 192 A locomotive worksplate, "SHARP STEWART & Co LIMITED, ATLAS WORKS, 4692 - 1900, GLASGOW 2", from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway "C" Class 0-6-0 No 720 actually built in January 1901 and allocated new to Longhedge. At the Grouping it was renumbered A720, later becoming 1720 and BR 31720. In BR days it was shedded at Hither Green, Faversham, Nine Elms, Dover and Ashford from where it was withdrawn in October 1961 to be cut up at Ashford Works the same month. Cast brass oval, 95/8"x57/8". The plate is from the collection of W.A.B. Jones, headmaster of Hadleigh School, Suffolk. As with other plates in the collection, it is distinctively repainted on the face only and accompanied by photographs, descriptive notes and in this case correspondence with BR dated 1965 outlining the history of the locomotive. - Sold for £440 Lot 193 A Great Southern and Western Railway enamel armband, "GS&WR, LOOK-OUT", red on white, complete with straps and buckle, a fine example with only the most minor edge chips in places. - Sold for £340 Lot 194 A china tea mug, "SAILORS AND SOLDIERS CANTEEN CREWE STATION C.E.M.S., PLEASE RETURN TO CREWE", hairline crack at back, otherwise quite presentable. - Sold for £40 Lot 195 A London and North Eastern Railway two aspect splitting lamp with copper plate "LNER, YORK D.H. No. 10" (the initials referring to Drighouses yard south of York). The lamp is complete with its interior fittings, the vessel stamped "LNE D 2" and the side of the cone "L&NER John Levick Birmingham". It has been cleaned and repainted red. - Sold for £360 Lot 196 A Great Western Railway children's game, "RACE TO THE OCEAN COAST", produced for the company's publicity department by the Chad Valley Company. The original box features a dramatic view of King Class locomotive 6000 at speed, 17"x12 1/2 ". The folding board shows the company's system with vignettes of places of interest, 21 1/2"x14 1/2". Included are three of the four "loco" playing pieces, one lacking its base and one its tender (the green example complete), dice and red cardboard cup. A photocopy of the original rules is provided. A reasonable example, a little repair to the base of the box. - Sold for £30 Lot 197 A locomotive worksplate, "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1944, No 25163", from an "Austerity" 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order for the War Department, WD No 70821 and shipped to Belgium. On returning to the UK, it was loaned to the LNER in December 1945 and purchased by them in December 1946, becoming LNER Class O7 No 3051. It became BR 63051 in 1948 and 90051 a year later. In BR days it was allocated to Woodford Halse, then Colwick, Langwith Junction, Canklow and Colwick again from where it was withdrawn in October 1965. After a couple of months in store at Colwick, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following January. The front of the plate has been lightly cleaned, 13 3/4"x5 1/2". - Sold for £250 Lot 198 A single line key token, "GARVE - ACHNASHEEN", (brass), from the Highland Railway's Dingwall and Skye route to Kyle of Lochalsh. - Sold for £130 Lot 199 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "GRANGE-OVER-SANDS", (f/f), from the Furness Railway's Carnforth to Barrow route, the station situated on the northern shore of Morecambe Bay. Excellent colour though slight loss of shine, a small chip at the top of the first "N" and at the edge of the upper panel, both neatly restored. - Sold for £880 Lot 200 An LMS Steamers silver plated coffee pot, by Carrington. An attractive graduated design, with long curving handle and flat finialed lid. Excellent condition. - Sold for £130 Lot 201 A locomotive worksplate, "LMS BUILT 1947 DERBY". Locos built that year were Class 4P (later 4) 2-6-4T (4)2187-9/2265-99, diesel electric 0-6-0 shunters 7126-9, BR 12039-42, and the first Co-Co diesel electric No 10000. Cast brass oval, 10 1/2"x6", ex loco condition. A note attached to the plate indicates that it was removed from No 42266 at Greenock Ladyburn MPD. - Sold for £160 Lot 202 A Glynn Valley Tramway mounted coat of arms transfer, featuring the company monogram in gilt lettering within a red oval belted garter on a green background, overall 18"x15". This minor line ran westward from Chirk on the Shrewsbury to Chester main line. It closed in 1933. - Sold for £160 Lot 203 An London and North Eastern Railway cast iron doorplate, "STATION MASTER", from Mablethorpe station in East Lincolnshire, the plate has been cleaned and primered long ago. - Sold for £100 Lot 204 A cast bronze wall plate, "ESSEX & SUFFOLK EQUITABLE INSURANCE SOCIETY LTD, ESTD 1802", 23 1/2"x11", with frame, engraved serif lettering with white filling. (MP NB 101F) - Sold for £80 Lot 208 A Great Western Railway cast iron cabside numberplate, "3782", from an 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in August 1938 and allocated new to Shrewsbury where it remained for virtually all its working life before spending its final days at Birkenhead, Stourbridge Junction and Oxley from where it was withdrawn in October 1966. After six months in store at Oxley, it was cut up at Cashmores, Great Bridge in April 1967. The front of the plate has been repainted, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £540 Lot 209 A Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway level crossing gate lamp, with square body and hinged top. Two opposite sides have a small red bull's eye lens and the others a large blue bull's eye lens, each side has a red or green steel dish-shaped surround. The lamp lacks interior fittings. This example was recovered by James Boyd who accompanied and filmed the demolition train on the line. - Sold for £600 Lot 210 An Annets key, "EMERGENCY KEY, FISHERMANS CROSSING, REDCAR", (steel, with mushroom shaped head), overall 8" long. The watch has a hinged double back case which, along with the Swiss 15 jewel movement, is marked with the maker's name. - Sold for £140 Lot 213 An LMS blue enamel trespass notice in the style of the former Caledonian Railway and referring to their act of 1898, signed "EUSTON STATION, LONDON, 2ND JULY 1923, R.C. The badge is complete with its rear fixings and pin. - Sold for £110 Lot 220 A locomotive headboard, "THE RED ROSE", a title introduced by BR on 3rd May 1951 specially for the Festival of Britain and conferred on the existing 12.05 p.m. service from Euston and the 5.25 p.m. return working from Liverpool Lime Street. Its last titled run was on 16th April 1966. Cast aluminium, with integral bracket, overall 33 1/4" wide, with original red paintwork, plenty of signs of wear from daily use and the back marked "8A EDGE HILL". (See following lot) - Sold for £1650 Lot 221 An original oil painting by Barry Price, featuring the down "Red Rose" hauled by 46207 "Princess Arthur of Connaught", taking water on Bushey troughs while a Class 5 hauled passenger train is seen running on the slow lines. Cast aluminium oval, 9 1/4"x5 1/4", the front cleaned and repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £440 Lot 225 A Great Western Railway wooden notice, "ENGINEMEN MUST NOT DISCHARGE WATER FROM ENGINES WHEN STANDING AT THIS PLATFORM", cream lettering and frame on brown, 28"x20", double sided with hanging hooks. A superb example in fine original condition. - Sold for £270 Lot 226 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "KETTERING", (f/f), from the Midland Railway's main line to the north, the station still an impressive structure with its original canopies. Excellent colour and shine, two tiny insignificant face chips and an edge chip at the base, all expertly restored. - Sold for £440 Lot 227 A locomotive worksplate, "LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co No 2021, DARLINGTON 1948", from the (LNER) L1 Class 2-6-4T, originally numbered 9002 but renumbered 67703 in May 1948. A long-time Ipswich loco, it later moved to Stratford from where it was withdrawn in September 1962 and cut up at Doncaster Works two months later. Fully engraved brass oval, 13 1/2"x7 3/4", the front polished, the back in original condition with the loco number noted on the back. - Sold for £1700 Lot 228 An LMS cast iron bridge weight restriction notice, "LONDON MIDLAND & SCOTTISH RAILWAY, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN TO OWNERS OR DRIVERS OF LOCOMOTIVES, OR OF ANY WAGONS OR CARRIAGES DRAWN OR PROPELLED BY LOCOMOTIVES, THAT THIS BRIDGE IS INSUFFICIENT TO CARRY WEIGHTS BEYOND THE ORDINARY TRAFFIC OF THE DISTRICT", rectangular, 26 3/4"x20", with original white on red paintwork. - Sold for £190 Lot 229 A china tea cup, "GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY, S." (the "S" indicating Sheffield), excellent condition though unfortunately lacking saucer. - Sold for £130 Lot 230 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "STONEBRIDGE PARK", (h/f), from the London and North Western Railway's route northward from Euston, the station situated between Willesden Junction and Wembley Central. A scarce example, the first time offered at public auction. Excellent colour and shine, two tiny chips at the upper and lower right edge just into the maroon. - Sold for £580 Lot 231 A BR(S) light blue enamel notice detailing the conditions upon which tickets are issued, 6"x4", very minor screw hole chipping only. - Sold for £70 Lot 232 A single line key token, "LLANDILO - FFAIRFACH", (alloy), from the southern end of the Central Wales line, this short section originally built by the Llanelly Railway and Dock Company. - Sold for £170 Lot 233 A locomotive nameplate, "THE NORTHAMPTONSHIRE REGIMENT", with matching regimental badge, from the LMS Class 6 (later 6P & 7P) "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 No 6147 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23642, in 1927, becoming BR 46147. The loco was originally named "Courier" in 1928 after the pioneer loco designed by Thomas Crampton but renamed in 1935 following a decision to name all the Class after regiments and other organisations. In BR days its sheds were Carlisle Upperby, Camden, Holyhead, Edge Hill, Longsight, Crewe North, Millhouses, Canklow and finally Willesden from where it was withdrawn in November 1962. After three months in store, unusually at Devons Road, Bow, it was cut up at Crewe Works in March 1963. Cast brass, 52 1/2", the name on two lines, with the background repainted. The badge, 11" diameter, chromed and mounted on a brass backplate, features a castle, the county name in scroll and the battle honours of Gibraltar and Talavera. - Sold for £12200 Lot 234 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, "BELLERENA - LIMAVADY JCT", (alloy), from a section situated on the southern shore of Lough Foyle on the former Belfast and Northern Counties Railway's route to Derry. - Sold for £160 Lot 235 An LMS silver plated half pint tankard, by Mappin and Webb, the side displaying the company initials in large script lettering, excellent condition. - Sold for £95 Lot 236 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign "KINGUSSIE", (h/f), from the Highland Railway's Inverness to Perth main line. It is in superb original condition. - Sold for £1200 Lot 241 A single line key token, "RANNOCH - CORROUR", (brass), from the North British Railway's West Highland line, a desolate moorland section close to the summit of the route. - Sold for £300 Lot 242 A Sykes brass cased signal box indicator, with a red/white flag showing "LOCKED/FREE", 3 3/4"x5 1/4", lacking glass and front plate. An interesting example which would benefit from some simple restoration. - Sold for £260 Lot 243 A BR(S) dark green totem sign, "KENLEY", (f/f), the station is on the South Eastern Railway's branch to Caterham. Notably, this totem shares its name with one of Bulleid's Battle of Britain Class Pacifics. Excellent colour and shine, one small chip repair, hardly noticeable. - Sold for £460 Lot 244 A pair of Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway cast iron seat ends, each marked with the company initials and in unrestored condition. Rolled with folds. - Sold for £260 Lot 250 A shedplate "55G" Huddersfield (February 1957 - January 1967), then Knottingly diesel depot (December 1967 - June 1973). This ex LNWR shed, formerly 25B, had an allocation of around 25 locos when using this code. Knottingly diesel depot adopted this code, but it is unknown if any of its allocation carried such a plate. The plate has been cleaned and the front repainted. - Sold for £210 Lot 251 A BR(E) dark blue enamel station direction sign, "BRITISH RAILWAYS (in totem) THORPE BAY STATION", with arrow, from the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway's route, the station situated between Southend and Shoeburyness. 28"x13", excellent condition. - Sold for £780 Lot 252 An enamel departure board plate, "YEOFORD, CREDITON & NEWTON ST CYRES". The stations are on the London and South Western Railway's main line on the approach to Exeter. The plates are believed to have been used at Barnstaple Junction or Ilfracombe. Cast letters on wood with beading, 79"x10 1/2", the front repainted black on white. - Sold for £100 Lot 258 A smokebox numberplate, "70028", from the BR Standard Class 7 "Britannia" 4-6-2 "Royal Star" built at Crewe in October 1952, one of a batch built for the Western Region, and appropriately named when built after a GWR broad gauge loco. It was allocated new to Cardiff Canton in December 1953 and it remained there until 1961 apart from a brief spell at Exmouth Junction in the spring of 1953 deputising for the Bulleid Pacifics. Its later sheds were Aston, Longsight, Willesden, Crewe North Crewe South, Llandudno Junction and finally Carlisle Kingmoore from where it was withdrawn in September 1967. After four months in store at Kingmoor, it was cut up at J McWilliams, Shettleston, in January 1968. The front of the plate has been repainted over the original paintwork, the back is untouched. The plate was acquired from Carlisle Kingmoor in the 1960s direct from the Shedmaster. It has not been offered for sale previously. - Sold for £3200 Lot 259 An LMS "Hawkseye" target sign, "HIGHTOWN", from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Liverpool to Southport route. 48" long, with black on yellow paintwork. - Sold for £190 Lot 260 An LMS sepia carriage print, "LOCH LOMOND, DUMBARTONSHIRE", a view of loch-side cottages and boats with mountains towering above the far shore. It is complete with two unmarked glass jars with lids. The holder has a ringed handle and ball feet and is in excellent condition. - Sold for £270 Lot 264 A brass wall plate, "ROYAL EXCHANGE ASSURANCE, FIRE AND LIFE OFFICE, A.D. 1720". A lovely old hand-engraved example, 18"x12", with the engraver's name "Rummens 48 Leadenhall St" discreetly displayed to the lower right. - Sold for £150 Lot 265 A tenderplate, "BR1F, 1165, 1956", from the tender attached to the BR Class 9F 2-10-0 No 92076, allocated new to Doncaster in March 1956. It soon moved to Annesley where it was a regular on the famous "windcutter" freights to Woodford Halse. Its later sheds were Rowsley, Kirkby in Ashfield, Newton Heath and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in February 1967. After four months in store at Speke Junction, it was cut up at McWilliams, Shettleston the following June. Cast iron rectangle, 8"x5 3/4". The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £130 Lot 266 An L&YR cast iron notice, "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY NOTICE, THE COMPANY'S ROAD NOT PUBLIC", 24"x97/8", with lugs at the centre top and base, the face of the sign has been repainted. - Sold for £150 Lot 267 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "LOSTWITHIEL", (f/f), the station is situated on the Cornish main line and was the junction for the Fowey branch. The plate is 4 1/4"x 3/4" - Sold for £25 Lot 273 A locomotive nameplate, "CRIGGION", from a 0-6-0ST with inside cylinders built by Kitson, Works No 5476, in 1936. It went new to Stewarts & Lloyds at Corby Steelworks as their No 48. In November 1949 it moved to nearby Corby Quarries, which became part of British Steel in 1968, and was scrapped on site by George Cohen in October 1969. Rectangular cast brass, 28 3/4x6", with serif lettering, the front repainted red, the back in original condition. - Sold for £1600 Lot 274 A shedplate "87G" Carmarthen (1949 - April 1964). This ex GWR shed was home to 40 locos during the 1950s.In the early 60s it housed 5 Manors and, surprisingly, the same number of ex WD 2-8-0s. The front of the plate has been repainted long ago. - Sold for £230 Lot 275 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "MANCHESTER EXCHANGE", (f/f), from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's principal terminus station on the north side of the city. It is accompanied by a letter from British Transport Catering stating that the pot is available for collection from Glasgow. Excellent condition. - Sold for £500 Lot 279 An LNER cast iron seat back plate, "PONDERS END", from the Great Eastern Railway's original main line to Cambridge, the station situated between Angel Road and Brimsdown. The front of the plate has been repainted white on black, 30" long. - Sold for £360 Lot 280 A cast iron doorplate, "SIGNAL - LAMP ROOM", believed to be of Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway origin, two separate plates, each 18"x3", with raised inset borders and scalloped corners, presumably used on a pair of double doors. One example has been restored, the other is in original condition. - Sold for £200 Lot 281 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "LONG BUCKBY", (f/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Northampton loop on the West Coast Main Line and the sole surviving "village" station on this part of the route. Excellent colour and shine with slight mottling, a tiny chip on the second "B", hardly noticeable. - Sold for £500 Lot 282 A Webb and Thompson large single line staff, "KENILWORTH JCT - GIBBET HILL", from the London and North Western Railway's Leamington Spa to Coventry line, today a busy cross country route. - Sold for £150 Lot 283 A locomotive nameplate, "THE BEDALE", from the LNER D49/2 "Hunt" Class 4-4-0 No 235 built at Darlington in June 1932 and named after the fox hunt operating in the Northallerton/Catterick area of North Yorkshire. It was renumbered 2740 in 1946, becoming BR 62740. In BR days its sheds were York, Starbeck, Neville Hill, Selby and Hull Dairycoates from where it was withdrawn in August 1960 to be cut up at Darlington Works the following month. The plate is 33" long and carries a left-handed fox with its fur well polished after many years on the loco, the front of the plate is repainted black, the back untouched. - Sold for £13200 Lot 284 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway signal box lever frame maker's plate, "L&Y Ry Co, HORWICH", cast iron, 33"x7", with decorative shaped ends. The plate is in fine original condition. - Sold for £150 Lot 285 A shedplate "61A" Kittybrewster (1949 - July 1961). The ex GNSR shed was home to between 50 and 70 steam locos, until it became a short lived diesel depot when the area became dieselised. Notable residents were the GNSR D40 4-4-0s and the NBR D34 4-4-0s, along with the diminutive Z4 and Z5 0-4-2Ts which shunted in Aberdeen Docks. The plate is in superb ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £190 Lot 286 A shedplate "61B" Aberdeen Ferryhill (1948 - February 1967). This joint shed used by the CR and NBR was perhaps most famously remembered for its 1960s allocation of 14 A4s performing their main line swan song on the Glasgow expresses. The final two A2s also worked from this depot. It had 40 locos allocated in 1950, dwindling to just 5 in its final few months after all the Pacifics had gone The plate is in superb ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £540 Lot 287 A shedplate "61C" Keith (1949 - January 1961 to steam, July 1966 completely). This former GNSR shed had 23 locos allocated in 1950, and in its final month had 26 locos on its books. On closure to steam the shed housed a small number of diesel shunters. The plate is in superb ex loco condition with original paintwork. - Sold for £390 Lot 288 A BR(S) dark green totem sign, "AYLESFORD", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's Rochester to Paddock Wood route. A scarce example rarely seen at auction. Excellent colour and shine, a small chip on the "F" and a couple of minor blemishes. - Sold for £450 Lot 289 A locomotive worksplate, "BUILT 1949, CREWE". Locos built that year were Class 2P (later2) 2-6-2T 41230-59 and Class 5P5F (later 5) 4-6-0 44658-67 and 44718-37. Cast iron oval, 10 1/2"x6", the characters repainted. An LMS style plate with thicker lettering than the later BR examples. - Sold for £140 Lot 290 An original watercolour painting by T Oben, featuring West Country Class Pacific 34039 "Boscastle" passing through Midsomer Norton South station with a Cross Country express. 34"x26 1/2", framed and glazed. - Sold for £380 Lot 291 A BR(E) signal box diagram, "DONNINGTON ROAD", from the Sleaford to Spalding route, including up and down sidings and Quadring Crossing. Multicoloured, 49 1/2"x18 1/2", in its original wooden frame with glass. - Sold for £70 Lot 292 An LMS Hotels china muffin plate and cover, each marked with the company name in gilt lettering with laurel surround, the base of the 9" plate marked Wedgwood, a crack inside the lid restored on the outside. - Sold for £35 Lot 293 A pair of London and North Western Railway signal lever description plates from the Birkenhead area, "FROM SEACOMBE", "TO BROOK ST", "TO FLOAT", each 5 1/2"x3 3/4", in original condition. - Sold for £50 Lot 294 A BR(E) dark blue totem sign, "CANTLEY", (h/f), from the station is on the Great Eastern Railway's Norwich to Reedham route. The totem is creased at each end with loss of enamel which has been repainted, though the name is almost unaffected, the remaining enamel good with excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £440 Lot 295 A worksplate, "JOHN BENNIE, STAR ENGINE WORKS, GLASGOW, 5". We have been unable to obtain any information on this builder other than that John Bennie was a cousin of George Bennie of Railplane fame, erected over the line at Milngavie in the1930s, and who also built the steamer lift on Loch Lomond. Possibly, therefore, this attractive plate may well originate from a boat or some other artefact with maritime connections. Engraved brass rectangle with hand cut serif lettering, 6"x33/8", the number stamped in, the front of the plate is lightly polished, the back in original condition. - Sold for £70 Lot 296 A Great Western Railway matching cup and saucer, "PROPERTY OF GWR RETURN TO PADDINGTON STATION", by Bond Pottery Cobridge, a little wear to the rim of the saucer, otherwise good. (2) - Sold for £90 Lot 297 A single line key token, "TOWYN - LLWYNGWRIL", (alloy), from the Cambrian Coast route between Dovey Junction and Pwllheli. - Sold for £480 Lot 298 A Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Railway lifebelt, "PD&SWJRly, CALSTOCK", complete with ropes. These rare examples were used on the quay at Calstock, below the famous viaduct where sidings connected to the line above by means of a wagon lift. 30" diameter, excellent original condition. - Sold for £500 Lot 299 A Great Northern Railway combined block instrument, with a 3-position dial and a matching indicator below with upward arrow. A large bell is mounted above the case, its box stamped "GNR Tele". Below, the instrument has a tapper, commutator (a little worn) and an ivorine plate "PRESS WHEN SENDING LINE CLEAR, OR RESTORING FROM T.E.S.", with brass button above. The instrument is in good original condition and complete with an additional case to the rear housing relays. Overall 25" high. - Sold for £360 Lot 300 A smokebox numberplate, "8786", from a GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in January 1934 and allocated new to Ebbw Junction where it remained until the end of its GWR days. It moved later to Pontypool Road and Aberbeeg with a final six months on the Southern Region at Nine Elms from where it was withdrawn in July 1963 and cut up at Swindon Works three months later. The plate has been repainted. - Sold for £340 Lot 301 A pair of North Eastern Railway "platform" scales, complete with weights, brass balance bar and a cast brass plate, "H POOLEY & SONS, N.E.R. (2683) GATESHEAD". - Sold for £720 Lot 302 A carriage print, "EAST LINTON, EAST LOTHIAN SCOTLAND, from a water colour by John S Aitken, R.S.W.", a view of the town looking towards the church, the river and bridge in the foreground (a file copy example with two small punch holes at the far left of the border, hardly visible). - Sold for £160 Lot 303 A Great Northern Railway 12 1/2" oval silver plated meat dish, by Walker and Hall, the rim prominently marked with the company's decorative monogram, excellent condition. - Sold for £30 Lot 304 A London Passenger Transport Board double royal poster, "HYDE PARK CORNER MAP OF DISTRICT WITHIN 1/4 MILE RADIUS OF THIS STATION", black and red, with a detailed street map. The sign is in L&NWR style, 28 1/2"x15", the face has been repainted. - Sold for £480 Lot 307 An LMS medallion, "LONDON MIDLAND & SCOTTISH RAILWAY ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS / 2 MILE WALK, 2ND", orange and white enamel on hallmarked silver, 1"x1 1/4". - Sold for £30 Lot 308 A North Eastern Railway non-pegging 3 position block instrument, with a brass plate below the dial "CARDIGAN ROAD" and a larger plate above "UP LINE". Excellent restored condition, the name plate referring to a Leeds area signal box. - Sold for £150 Lot 309 An electric locomotive bogie plate, "DONCASTER WORKS, A.C, BOGIE, NO 58", from a BR 25kv Bo-Bo Class 85. The whole Class, E3056-95, 85001-40, was built at Doncaster between 1961 and 1964. Engraved steel, 7"x3 1/2", the back marked "85 023". This loco was built in March 1963, withdrawn in April 1990 and cut up at MC Processors, Glasgow in November 1993. - Sold for £150 Lot 310 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway mounted coat of arms transfer featuring twin shields, crown and roses and belted garter, 13"x17", presented on a dark brown board. - Sold for £40 Lot 311 A London and North Eastern Railway cast iron doorplate, "BOOKING OFFICE", the front of the plate has been repainted, the back is in completely original condition. - Sold for £75 Lot 312 A single line key token, "ROCHE - TREGOSS", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Par to Newquay branch, a short section situated east of St Dennis Junction close to the famous village of Indian Queens. "COOKSTOWN JUN", from the Belfast and Northern Counties line, just south of Antrim. 5"x 1/2", with scalloped corners. - Sold for £110 Lot 315 An LMS silver plated seafood serving dish, together with five small oyster forks, all by Elkington, the company name in laurel leaf surround, though the dish marked "Steamers" and the forks "Hotels", excellent condition. (6) - Sold for £50 Lot 316 A Great Western Railway cast iron cabside numberplate, "G.W.R. 42", from a Rhymney Railway "R" Class 0-6-2T built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 6102, in December 1921, RR No 46. It spent its early years at Cardiff East Dock before moving to Cardiff Cathays where it spent most of its working life before returning for its final few years to East Dock from where it was withdrawn in October 1957 and cut up at Swindon Works the following month. The front of the plate has been repainted, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £2000 Lot 317 A BR(W) quad royal poster, "SOMERSET", by Boyer, (PR87). A poster map with vignettes and town coats of arms. The poster is rolled and has tape marks to the corners and corner loss at the lower right border (hidden if framed). - Sold for £220 Lot 318 A Festiniog Railway coach numberplate, "F.R. Co, No 5". A substantial plate, 15 3/4"x7", with scalloped corners, the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £840 Lot 319 A number plate "E3031" from an English Electric 25kv Bo-Bo Class 83 electric works number 2935/E271, introduced in November 1960 to ACL. Renumbered 83008 in November 1972, it was withdrawn in August 1983 and cut up by Vic Berry, Leicester in September 1984. Chromed stainless steel characters on steel backplate, 32 1/4"x7 1/2", the front background repainted in rail blue, plenty of rust in evidence on the back with primer. - Sold for £880 Lot 320 An LMS brass whistle from a Jubilee class locomotive, a Stanier Hooter type, 15 3/4" high, the base marked "3 cyl, 460". - Sold for £160 Lot 321 An LMS framed certificate issued by the Euston School of Signalling for the session 1925-1926, certifying that Ernest G.W. Hanks (signalman, South Acton) obtained 108 out of 150 possible marks in an examination of block telegraph regulations. An attractive presentation including coat of arms, locomotive 10453 and a variety of block instruments. The certificate is fully printed with the signalman's details. 15 3/4"x19". - Sold for £40 Lot 322 A shedplate "16A" Nottingham (1948 - September 1963), then Toton (September 1963 - December 1965 for steam and as a diesel depot until July 1973). The ex MR Nottingham shed housed almost 150 locos in the 1950s. When ex MR shed Toton, formerly 18A, used this code it had around 75 steam locos, and some of its diesel allocation also carried these plates. An LMS style plate, the characters repainted. - Sold for £90 Lot 323 A locomotive worksplate, "NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD, GLASGOW, 1919, QUEENS PARK WORKS, No 22185", from a 2-8-0 built to a Robinson Great Central design to Ministry of Munitions order for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 2095. It was loaned to the GC in October 1919 and returned to the ROD in August 1921 to be stored at Morecambe. In February 1927 it was acquired by the LNER, becoming Class O4/3 No 6629. It was renumbered 3873 in 1946, became BR 63873 and was rebuilt with diagram 100A boiler in August 1955 and re-classified O4/8. Its BR sheds were Annesley, Gorton and Colwick from where it was withdrawn in January 1966. After three months in store at Colwick, it was cut up at Cohens, Kettering the following April. 12 3/4"x5 3/4", the front of the plate has been repainted. - Sold for £290 Lot 324 A single line key token, "LUXULYAN - GOONBARROW JCT", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Par to Newquay branch, one of the original short sections on the route before the closure of many of the intermediate signal boxes. The lamp is complete with its slide-in vessel and interior fittings stamped "BR(E)" and red, blue and orange glasses, the latter being formed of glass slats. The station was on the company's Lincoln to Doncaster route. The lamp has been cleaned and has the remains of a coat of arms maker's plate on the top. - Sold for £200 Lot 337 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "SQUIRES GATE", (f/f), from the Preston to Blackpool South route, a joint line operated by the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways. The lamp is complete with its interior fittings and glasses, the vessel and screw-in burner both stamped NER, the vessel and top also stamped "2 DEW", it has a piecrust top and copper wire handle. - Sold for £210 Lot 351 A diesel locomotive depot plaque, "TOTON", featuring cooling towers, 25"x25" diamond, the black background probably repainted, otherwise in original condition with brake dust deposits on the sides and oxidisation on the back. - Sold for £210 Lot 352 A pair of LMS silver plated sugar tongs, by Mappin and Webb, the side inscribed "Gleneagles" in script lettering, as used at the world famous Gleneagles Hotel, excellent condition. - Sold for £40 Lot 353 A locomotive nameplate, "MURRAY OF ELIBANK", from the LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 26146, in October 1947, LNER No 1245, becoming BR 61245. It was named at Cowlairs Works on 17th December 1947 after the Scottish based LNER Director who served between 1923 and 1947, the only Director to serve from the 1923 Grouping to Nationalisation. He died on 2nd June 1973. A long time Haymarket loco, it moved late on to nearby Dalry Road from where it was withdrawn in July 1965. After three months in store at Dalry Road, it was cut up at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co, Wishaw the following October. Cast brass, 47" long, the front repainted maroon, the back in original condition. The plate is sold with an attractive polished wooden mount. - Sold for £9800 Lot 354 A locomotive worksplate, "LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 1245, 1947". Cast iron oval, 9"x5", the front cleaned but unpainted, the back untouched. It was cut up at BREL Glasgow in December 1973. Cast aluminium oval, 9 3/4"x7 3/4", the characters are polished, though the plate retains its original green paintwork. The lot is accompanied by a letter from the builders dated 1980 in which they provide information on the history of the locomotive and its mechanical specification. - Sold for £190 Lot 359 A brass builder's plate, "COCHRANE & SONS LIMITED, SHIPBUILDERS, SELBY, 1929". We have been unable to obtain any information regarding this company but the plate is presumed to come from a ship of some description. Cast brass oval, 17 1/4"x8 1/2", the front cleaned and repainted blue, the back in original condition. - Sold for £260 Lot 360 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "SHOTTON HIGH LEVEL", (f/f), from the Great Central Railway's Wrexham, Mold and Connahs Quay line, the station situated south of Dee Marsh Junction, close to the point where the line crosses the Chester to Holyhead route. Excellent colour and shine, with just minor rusting to the very edge of the white border. - Sold for £290 Lot 361 A BR(Sc) light blue enamel doorplate, "TICKETS", (f/f), a minor edge chip below the letter "T" and some surface marking at the right-hand end. - Sold for £75 Lot 362 A single line key token, "ST ERTH - ST IVES", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's scenic seaside branch in West Cornwall. (Replacement key end). - Sold for £150 Lot 363 An LNER cast iron seat back plate, "MILNATHORT", from the North British Railway's Stirling to Perth main line which closed to passengers in 1964 and completely in 1970. The station was situated just south of Glenfarg. 30" long, the front with original white on black paintwork. - Sold for £240 Lot 364 A locomotive nameplate "SNOWDON" from a BR/EE 25kv Bo-Bo Class 86 electric 86257. Originally numbered E3139 when delivered new from Doncaster in February 1966, it became 86043 in December 1973 then 86257 in June 1975. Named at Willesden on the 29th January 1981, it went into storage at MOD Longtown in November 2002 and was hauled to Immingham TMD in August 2003 and finally cut up by Easco at Immingham Railfreight Terminal in 2003. This Swindon plate is cast aluminium, 39" long, in ex loco condition with black paintwork and earlier red visible in places. The lot is accompanied by a sales receipt naming the original purchaser (not the present vendor). - Sold for £3000 Lot 365 A locomotive headboard, "THE MANXMAN", a title introduced by the LMS in July 1927, withdrawn during the War and re-introduced by BR in July 1951. The service from Euston to Liverpool Lime Street operated only during the summer timetable and ran in conjunction with sailings from Liverpool to the Isle of Man. Its last titled run was on 16th April 1966. Cast aluminium, with integral bracket and spring clip, overall 32 1/4" wide. The front has multiple coats of red paintwork, the top layer almost certainly applied by BR and there are plenty of signs of wear from day to day use. Having suffered considerable derailment damage it was withdrawn in September 1991 and cut up at Cardiff Canton MPD by Gwent Demolition in May 1993. Chromed brass rectangle, 10 1/4"x4 1/2", ex loco condition with BR blue paintwork. - Sold for £320 Lot 369 A smokebox numberplate, "5655", from a GWR 5600 Class 0-6-2T built at Swindon in January 1926 and allocated new to Cardiff Cathays. It finished its GWR days at Radyr and spent its final years at Merthyr from where it was withdrawn in June 1965. After four months in store at Cardiff East Dock, it was cut up the following October at Wards, Briton Ferry. The plate has been repainted and the numbers polished. - Sold for £380 Lot 370 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "BEATTOCK", (h/f), from the Caledonian Railway's Carlisle to Glasgow main line, the station situated south of the famous summit of the same name, The station was once the junction for the short branch to Moffat, its closure in 1972 produced the longest section of line without a station (Carstairs to Lockerbie) in the country. Reasonable colour though some loss of shine and discoloration. - Sold for £520 Lot 371 A Taff Vale Railway cast iron sign, "SAFETY POINTS", chevron shaped with integral post fitting, overall 26"x18", double sided and repainted black on white. This is the Welsh version of the English "Catch Points" sign. A rare example which we have never offered previously. - Sold for £210 Lot 372 A single line key token, "PANTEG & C JCT - ABERSYCHAN", (alloy), from the Great Western Railway's Pontypool Road to Blaenavon route which closed in 1962. (The abbreviation "C" on this key token stands for "COED-Y-GRIC"). - Sold for £130 Lot 373 A group of brass signal lever description plates from West London Junction box close to Clapham Junction, each engraved brass, 2 1/4"x7", with red infill, the wording referring to "WINDSOR LINES" and "YARD GROUND SIGNAL". (3) - Sold for £200 Lot 374 A shedplate75C Norwood Junction (1950 - January 1964 to steam, then a diesel depot until closure in August 1966). In early BR days this ex SR shed had 40 locos, which was reduced to 18 in its final year. A small fleet of diesel shunters also carried this code; 3 03s, 15 08s and 3 of their SR forerunners. The front of the plate has been repainted long ago, the BR(S) Eastleigh triangle is cast on the back. - Sold for £160 Lot 375 An LMS pattern platform lamp with a maroon label "GAERWEN" (the junction for the Amlwch branch), 29" high, repainted cream and complete with copper chimney and BR(M) reservoir, burner and chimney. - Sold for £250 Lot 376 A BR(E) signal box diagram, "ESSENDINE", from the ex GNR NORTH BOX on the East Coast Main Line. The diagram is dated 12/11/64 and is accompanied by an amendment, also dated 12/11/64. The North Box at Essendine was renamed when the larger 111 lever South Box was demolished. This modern framed and glazed diagram measures 71"x26" and the mounted amendment is 48"x24". - Sold for £200 Lot 377 A Caledonian Railway cast iron milepost set, "CARLISLE 153", with the three fractions 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4, each in their distinctive shape. It has a 6 1/2" dial with chromed bezel and brown bakelite case. - Sold for £210 Lot 394 A cast aluminium key tag "50037", as attached to the starting key of a BR Class 50 diesel electric locomotive. 2"x 1/2". These tags were provided when the Class was moved to the Western Region although, not surprisingly, they tended to disappear and were not replaced. Class 50 No D437 "Illustrious" was built in September 1968, renumbered "50037" in February 1974, withdrawn from Laira in September 1991 and cut up by MC Processors, Glasgow in December 1992. - This item was withdrawn from the auction. Lot 395 A BR(Sc) quad royal poster, "THE CLYDE COAST AND LOCH LOMOND", by Nicholson (B18997). A bird's eye view of the area extending in the north to the Callender and Oban line. Rolled with folds. - Sold for £110 Lot 396 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "WELSHPOOL", (h/f), one of the few surviving stations on the inland section of the Cambrian Railway's main line. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £400 Lot 397 A tenderplate, "WATER CAPACITY 4000 GALLONS", from a Type B "Princess Coronation" Class tender, non-streamlined style with welded tank construction, LMS tender Nos 9748-52, as fitted to the original non-streamlined "Duchesses" Nos (4)6230-4. Cast brass oval, 10 1/4"x6", the back of the plate clearly stamped "LMS A3", the LMS code for this type of tender. - Sold for £140 Lot 398 A set of cast aluminium cabside numbers, "D7054", from a BR Type 3 Class 35 B-B "Hymek" diesel hydraulic, built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 7958, in November 1962. It was allocated new to Bristol Bath Road, withdrawn from Old Oak Common in December 1972 and cut up at BREL Swindon in April 1975. They are mounted on a green wooden backboard. - Sold for £160 Lot 399 A locomotive nameplate, "RENOWN", from the LMS Class 5XP (later 6P & 7P) "Jubilee" 4-6-0 No 5713 built at Crewe in 1936, becoming BR 45713. A long time Carlisle Kingmoor engine, it moved at the end of its working life to Bank Hall from where it was withdrawn in October 1962. Following periods in store at Easfield and Cowlairs Works, it was cut up at Cowlairs in June 1963. The loco was named after the Royal Navy Battle Cruiser 1916-48. Cast brass, 29" long, the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £8500 Lot 400 A Great Northern Railway of Ireland flare lamp with a 4" circular body, cap and handle. The side is prominently stamped with the company initials. - Sold for £120 Lot 401 A diesel locomotive nameplate, "WESTERN ENVOY", with its matching cabside numberplate, "D1061", from the BR Class 52 Type 4 C-C built at Crewe in April 1963 and allocated new to Old Oak Common. It was withdrawn from Laira in October 1974 and cut up at BREL Swindon in August 1975. The faces of the plates have been repainted and the backs varnished, though there is plenty of wear still visible on the back and blue paint on the rim. The nameplate is 79 1/2" long. - Sold for £6000 Lot 402 An original painting by Patrick Hobel, featuring an express at speed hauled by a Merchant Navy Class locomotive 35028 "Clan Line". A detailed view with an impressive signal gantry in the background. The painting is framed, overall 39"x27". - Sold for £400 Lot 403 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "CHELTENHAM SPA MALVERN ROAD", (h/f), from the Great Western Railway's Stratford-Upon-Avon to Cheltenham route which closed to passengers in 1966 and to freight traffic in 1977. It finally moved to Southall from where it was withdrawn in June 1965 and, after four months in store at Southall, cut up at Wards, Briton Ferry the following October. The front of the plate has been repainted, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £820 Lot 406 A GWR cast iron notice, "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN ... PRIVATE ROAD". The sign is 25"x16", the front has been repainted. - Sold for £100 Lot 407 A single line key token, "JOHNSTON - NEYLAND", (cast brass plates/steel), from the Great Western Railway's branch in West Wales which closed in 1965 and left the Clarbeston Road to Milford Haven route at Johnston. - This did not sell at the auction. It quickly returned south of the border to Derby shed, later moving to Bristol Barrow Road. While at Barrow Road it went to Rugby Testing Station in January 1958 for tests, later moving to Bath Green Park, Gloucester Barnwood, Gloucester Horton Road and finally Oxford from where it was withdrawn in September 1965. After a couple of months in store at Oxford, it was cut up at Cashmores, Newport the following December. The Buttington plate is cast brass with raised lettering, the Breidden plate is engraved, as it was fitted in 1928 when the station name was changed from Middleton Hills. - Sold for £160 Lot 423 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "CORBY", (f/f), from the Midland Railway's Kettering to Nottingham (via Melton) route. Although closed to passengers in 1966, the station has recently re-opened. A larger pattern example, 10 1/2"x8", the plate is in original condition and complete with its fixing lugs. - Sold for £90 Lot 432 A Taff Vale Railway mounted coat of arms transfer, featuring the Welsh dragon within a belted garter with a mountain goat above, 13"x16", presented on a black background. A multicoloured example from the box, 22"x60", rolled. - Sold for £210 Lot 436 A smokebox numberplate, "75030", from the BR Standard Class 4 4-6-0 built at Swindon and allocated new to Bletchley in June 1953. Its later sheds were Llandudno Junction, Chester Northgate, Willesden, Nuneaton, Stoke and finally Tebay from where it was withdrawn in December 1967 after performing banking duties on Shap the previous summer. After six months in store at Tebay and then Carlisle Kingmoor, it was cut up at Arnott Young, Carmyle in July 1968. The numbers and back have been repainted. - Sold for £840 Lot 437 A diesel locomotive depot plaque, "THORNABY", featuring a kingfisher, 25"x25" diamond, the black background probably repainted, otherwise in original condition with brake dust deposits on the sides and oxidisation on the back. - Sold for £420 Lot 438 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "CONNAHS QUAY", (f/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Chester and Holyhead main line. The station closed in 1966. Excellent colour and shine, a chip repair under the second "N" and a tiny chip in the lower panel. - This did not sell at the auction. Notably however, the lamp has a superb embossed brass maker's plate on top "FURNESS RAILWAY COMPANY MANUFACTURED BY MESSENGER & SONS BIRMINGHAM" which measures 3"x1". - Sold for £400 Lot 446 A locomotive nameplate, "CHARLES DICKENS", from the BR Standard Class 7 "Britannia" 4-6-2 No 70033 built at Crewe in December 1952 and named when built. It was allocated new to Holyhead but soon moved to Longsight where it remained for seven years, and later to Trafford Park, Willesden, Llandudno Junction, Willesden again, Crewe North, Crewe South and finally Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in July 1967. It was cut up at GH Campbell, Airdrie in April 1968. Cast brass, 54 3/4" long, the front repainted red, the back in original condition. The sign is 21 1/2"x22 1/2", in original unrestored condition and in the style of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway examples. - Sold for £140 Lot 454 A Great Northern Railway of Ireland enamel doorplate, "STATION MASTER", blue lettering and border on white, 18"x3", a few minor chips and surface marks. The plate was used at Fintona station, the terminus of the branch from Fintona Junction which famously used horse traction until its closure. - Sold for £460 Lot 455 A smokebox numberplate, "46480", from a (LMS) Class 2F (later 2) 2-6-0 built at Darlington, Works No 2172, in 1951, and allocated new to Darlington in September 1951. Its later sheds were Kirkby Stephen, West Auckland, York and finally Buxton from where it was withdrawn in May 1967. After six months in store at Buxton, it was cut up at Drapers, Hull the following December. The plate has been repainted long ago. - Sold for £600 Lot 456 A Great Western Railway wooden cased signal box indicator with a brass plate "FOULING BAR, UP LINE", with a "flag" marked "bar clear / train on bar". Original condition, 9 1/2" high, with the maker's name "Walters Electrical, London" inside the case. - Sold for £620 Lot 457 A carriage print, "SCHIEHALLION, NEAR KINLOCH RANNOCH, PERTHSHIRE", by W. Douglas Macleod, a dramatic view of the famous mountain and loch near the West Highland line (one of the longer style prints designed to fit an LMS frame). - Sold for £70 Lot 458 A group of engraved brass signal instrument plates from the Midland Railway's Shipley area, "FRIZINGHALL PASSENGER LINES" (worn), "UP FAST LINE INTERMEDIATE DISTANT", "UP FAST LINE DISTANT" and "DOWN DISTANT" (worn), each with serif lettering and 4 1/4" to 5 1/4" in length. (4) - Sold for £30 Lot 459 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "DIGGLE", (f/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Manchester to Leeds main line. The station was situated at the west end of Standedge Tunnel and closed in 1968. Good colour though a little loss of shine, some discoloration to the white enamel. - Sold for £620 Lot 460 A locomotive nameplate badge, "ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS", from the LMS Class 6 (later 6P & 7P) "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 No 6126 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23621, in 1927, becoming BR 46126. The loco was originally named "Sanspareil" after the pioneer loco built by Timothy Hackworth but renamed in 1935 following a decision to name all the Class after regiments and other organisations. In BR days its sheds were Camden, Crewe North, Carlisle Upperby, Preston, Willesden and finally Annesley where it could be seen running on the Great Central main line until withdrawal in October 1963. It was cut up the following month at Crewe Works. The badge is 11 1/2"x13 1/2" and features a crown, GR monogram and sunburst surround with the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (evil be to him who evil thinks). The back of the badge has had new fixing bolts tapped into the original bosses. - Sold for £940 Lot 461 A BR(S) light green totem sign, "WYE", (f/f), from the South Eastern Railway's Ashford to Canterbury and Margate route. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £270 Lot 462 A Glasgow and Greenock Railway cast iron milepost, "GLASGOW 9, GREENOCK 13 1/2", unrestored, with some original white and silver paint in evidence. (MP CR 105) - Sold for £130 Lot 463 A Great Western Railway brass cabside numberplate, "5711", from a 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23829, at their Hyde Park Works in February 1929 and allocated new to Merthyr where it spent the whole of its working life. It was withdrawn from Merthyr in January 1958 and cut up at Caerphilly Works the following month. The front of the plate has been repainted red, the back is in original condition. - Sold for £780 Lot 464 A cast iron notice, "ROADS ACT 1920, SECTION 7 (4), LOCOMOTIVES, HEAVY MOTOR CARS AND ALL MOTOR VEHICLES WITH SEATS FOR MORE THAN 15 PERSONS PROHIBITED ..." (with exemptions for agricultural and forestry traffic), 24"x23", unrestored with original paintwork. - Sold for £180 Lot 465 A Webb and Thompson large train staff, "SKIBBEREEN - BALTIMORE", from the Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway, Baltimore being the most southerly station in Ireland, while Skibbereen was the junction for the 3' gauge tramway to Schull. - Sold for £640 Lot 466 A fireman's shovel, by Lucas, with long shovel section and handle, in excellent condition. - Sold for £140 Lot 467 A signal box nameboard, "RHYL No 2", from the London and North Western Railway's Chester and Holyhead route. Cast letters on wood with beading, 49 1/2"x10", the front repainted white on maroon. - Sold for £720 Lot 468 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "LOCKERBIE", (h/f), from the Caledonian Railway's Carlisle to Glasgow main line. Excellent colour and shine, a minor blemish close to the first letter. - Sold for £800 Lot 469 A London and North Western Railway "pug" type locomotive whistle, overall 11 1/4" high, cleaned and lightly polished. - Sold for £270 Lot 470 A leather cash bag with brass plate stamped, "L.M.S., S.M. The station was on the original Grand Junction Railway north of Birmingham, situated between Bescot and Bushbury. - Sold for £40 Lot 471 An LMS silver plated sauce boat, by Walker and Hall, with the full company name and coat of arms on the side. An attractive accentuated traditional design, with integral oval stand, excellent condition. - Sold for £60 Lot 472 A Metropolitan Railway cab destination plate, "RICKMANSWORTH / CHORLEY WOOD", an early black on white enamel example, 33"x4", with the maker's name "Wildman & Meguyer - Birmingham" at the base, a few edge and minor face chips from day to day use have been touched in, otherwise a lovely example. - Sold for £110 Lot 473 A shedplate "40E" Colwick (February 1958 - January 1966). This ex GNR shed, formerly 38A, housed 150 locos while using this code. In January 1966 the shed was transferred to the LM region (16B), with closure to steam in December of that year. It remained open as a diesel depot until April 1970. The characters have been repainted. - Sold for £110 Lot 474 A cast bronze wall plate, "BARCLAYS BANK LIMITED", 14"x18", with frame, engraved serif lettering with white filling. - Sold for £120 Lot 475 A BR(S) dark green totem sign, "KENT HOUSE", (h/f), from the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's main line, the station situated to the west of Beckenham Junction. Excellent colour and reasonable shine, some edge rusting and chipping just into the green in two places. - Sold for £200 Lot 476 A London and North Eastern Railway restaurant car table cloth, woven with the company's full coat of arms in the centre and rose and thistle decoration to the edges, 35" square. - Sold for £100 Lot 477 A Lancashire &Yorkshire Railway small notice board with opening back and the top marked, "L.Y.R. Co", overall 30"x14 1/2", excellent condition, complete with two brass hanging rings. - Sold for £110 Lot 478 A BR(M) maroon enamel station direction sign, "BRITISH RAILWAYS (in totem) BUSHEY & OXHEY STATION", with arrow. The station is on the West Coast Main Line, between Harrow and Wealdstone and Watford Junction. 28"x13", good colour and shine, some chipping repaired at the right-hand side. - Sold for £660 Lot 479 A Great Western Railway track circuit "banner" indicator, showing track occupied or clear. The instrument is complete with its steel stand and an ivorine plate "UP MAIN IN REAR OF HOME". - Sold for £180 Lot 480 A set of three Great Northern Railway cream tots, each with brown glaze and marked "REFRESHMENT DEPT GNR", 25/8", 2 3/4", 31/8". (3) - Sold for £25 Lot 481 A locomotive nameplate, "PRINCESS VICTORIA", from the LMS Class 7P (later 8P) "Princess Royal" 4-6-2 No 6205 built at Crewe in 1935, becoming BR 46205. In BR days its allocations alternated between Edge Hill and Crewe North before it moved at the end to Camden and then Willesden from where it was withdrawn in November 1961. After five months in store at Willesden, it was cut up at Crewe Works in May 1962. The loco was named after the daughter of King Edward VII. Cast brass, 46" long, the front repainted, the back in original condition. - Sold for £17000 Lot 482 A BR(W) chocolate and cream totem sign, "NEWBURY", (f/f), once an important junction on the Great Western Railway's West of England main line with lines radiating to Winchester, Didcot and Lambourn. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £480 Lot 483 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway three aspect handlamp, complete with interior fittings, slatted glasses and bull's eye lens to the front. The body is stamped "SOUTHPORT 1703" and the brass rear catch and drum are stamped with the company initials. The bull's eye lens is in poor condition, though the lot includes a second handlamp from Southport with a good bull's eye lens though lacking top handle and interior. Both unrestored. (2) - Sold for £400 Lot 484 A Welshpool and Llanfair Railway axle box cover inscribed "W&L RY - 1905". The narrow gauge line closed to passengers in 1931 though freight traffic continued until the early 1960s. 7 1/2"x7" - Sold for £110 Lot 485 A BR(S) signal box diagram, "FELTHAM JUNCTION", 1969, showing the routes towards Kneller (Whitton Junction), Hounslow and Feltham East. The diagram also shows the motive power depot. Excellent colour and shine, a face chip above the "F" and at the edge of the lower panel, otherwise just a few minor blemishes. - Sold for £200 Lot 488 A Railway Signal Company miniature single line staff, "DROMKEEN - KILLONAN JCT", (alloy), from the Waterford, Limerick and Wexford Railway's Limerick Junction to Limerick route. - Sold for £40 Lot 489 A shedplate "1C" Watford (1935 - March 1965) together with its "SC" (self cleaning) plate. This ex LNWR shed had an allocation of 30 locos in the 50s. The front of each plate has been repainted. (2) - Sold for £250 Lot 490 A BR(Sc) light blue totem sign, "ALLANFEARN", (f/f), from the Highland Railway's Inverness to Keith Junction (and Aberdeen) route. The station was originally named Culloden, though renamed when the route via Slochd was built in 1898 and the new station opened at Culloden Moor. Excellent colour and shine. - Sold for £640 Lot 491 A BR(M) lion over wheel cap badge, gilt, with maroon enamel panel "STATION MASTER". The badge is complete with its rear fixings and pin. - Sold for £110 Lot 492 A locomotive worksplate, "LMS BUILT 1896, HORWICH", from a Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 1008 Class 2-4-2T, LYR No 1263. It became LMS 10712 and BR 50712. Its BR sheds were Wakefield, Sowerby Bridge, Southport, Lostock Hall and finally Bank Hall from where it was withdrawn in March 1959. After well over a year in store at Bank Hall, it was cut up at Central Wagon Co, Ince in July 1960. Cast brass oval, 10 1/2"x6", the front repainted, the back cleaned with the locomotive details noted. - Sold for £340 Lot 493 A BR(Sc) light blue enamel doorplate, "WAITING & LADIES ROOMS", (f/f), excellent condition, just minor flaking at the two left screw holes and a few tiny flange chips. - Sold for £180 Lot 494 A BR(W) maroon totem sign, "DEGANWY", (f/f), the only intermediate station on the London and North Western Railway's Llandudno branch. Excellent colour and shine, though a crease repair affecting the "D" which has been repainted and a couple of surface blemishes. - Sold for £400 Lot 495 An "L.M.S." blue enamel poster board heading, probably produced by the London and North Eastern Railway to match their dark blue examples and used over an LMS timetable at a joint station. 29"x5 3/4", minor edge chipping only. - Sold for £70 Lot 496 A carriage print, "LOCH MORAR, INVERNESS-SHIRE", by W. Douglas Macleod, a panoramic view of the area close to the West Highland route to Mallaig (one of the longer style prints designed to fit an LMS frame). - Sold for £75 Lot 497 A smokebox numberplate, "42292", from a LMS Class 4P (later 4) 2-6-4T No 2292 built at Derby in 1947. A long-time Southport loco, it was withdrawn from there in May 1964 and cut up at Crewe Works two months later. The plate is in ex loco condition. - Sold for £480 Lot 498 A BR(M) maroon totem sign, "STAVELEY", (h/f), from the London and North Western Railway's Oxenholme to Windermere branch in the heart of the Lake District. Excellent colour and reasonable shine, two small face chips between the letters, both neatly restored. - Sold for £2100 Lot 499 A signal box nameboard, "BISHOPTON TUNNEL", from the Caledonian Railway's Glasgow Central to Gourock route and situated between Paisley and Port Glasgow. Cast letters on wood with beading, 86"x10 1/2", the front repainted black on white. - Sold for £130 Lot 500 A BR(S) dark green totem sign, "SITTINGBOURNE AND MILTON REGIS", (f/f), from the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's main line, the station situated west of Rochester and the junction for the Sheerness-on-Sea branch.
