Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 16 January 2010
| Lot 107 |
An enamel direction sign, "TO MUMBLES ELECTRIC RLY", double-sided, 41 1/2"x9", a few small face chips one side, a few more to the other, excellent colour and shine and of a unique style. This historic line opened nearly two decades before the Stockton and Darlington, in 1807, as the Oystermouth Railway, being converted from 48"/50" to Standard Gauge in 1855 and renamed the Swansea and Mumbles in 1879, a connection was made to the L&NWR at Shetty Road Junction (near Mumbles Road Station) in 1877. The line closed in 1960. A great rarity from a company which claimed to be the oldest passenger railway in the world.
