Great Central Railwayana Auction Sale 229, Auction Lot 78
Lot 78 A nameplate, 257 SQUADRON, with BATTLE OF BRITAIN CLASS appendage below, together with its matching badge depicting the Burma Squadron crest and motto which translates as For Death or Glory, from the (Southern Railway) Bulleid Light Pacific 4-6-2 No 34072 built at Brighton in April 1948, one of the Class which retained its original streamlined casing to the end. Allocated new to Dover on 24 April 1948, it moved to Exmouth Junction in February 1958 with a final four months at Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn on 25 October 1964 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry where it remained until acquired for preservation in November 1984 by the Southern Locomotives Group. Following restoration at Swindon Works in 1990, it operated on a number of preserved railways until withdrawn for a second time in January 2003. A major overhaul commenced in 2012 and is nearing completion. A fine set in totally ex loco condition. £40000-45000
